Legion Gerasene

World-weary (but classy) former General of the Satanic forces. After an unfortunate encounter with the Son of God (Mark 5:1-17) Legion found himself dishonored, disillusioned, and without a job. What's an ex-demon to do?

Description

Image
Appearance: Legion strikes a distinguished figure; smartly dressed in a single-breasted Armani suit, filling out the lines of the cut expertly. The ex-demon takes a great deal of pride in this human disguise, considering how much time was spent tailoring the appearance of the body. After all, fingernails and toes are tricky things to master in the art of Illusion Magic.

The only thing that impervious to cloaking seem to be Legion's eyes. They will always remain demonic; burning fiercely with a garnet light. To avoid startling people while in public, Legion has taken to wearing pitch-black Oakley shades at all hours.

All of this makes the former General look like an extra from Men in Black, as Liesha Kennicot so fondly observes. Whether or not this is true (it isn't), this gentlemanly human form helps Legion not look out of place at the Broadway shows and high-class restaurants he so enjoys.

Personality: Legion is inescapably polite and well-spoken, charming and friendly to a fault. Though his grasp of English is remarkable, he still stumbles through the odd idiom or reference to pop culture.

The ex-demon's sense of humor is quite broad, and he considers himself sensitive to life's subtle ironies -- the greatest of which, he feels, is within himself. While a collected and mature individual on the outside, he is often childlike and innocent when it comes to the Earthly realm, and the reasoning of humans.

Abilities: He's given to 'saving the day' as the humans call it, simply doing what he feels is 'right.' Legion deals primarily in elemental manipulation (fire being his usual weapon of choice) but over the years, friendships with various mages and casters of different caliber have left him with bits of more .. involved magic added to his arsenal.

Before the Event, Legion thrived in chaos and bloodshed. These days, he would rather talk it out with the high-strung slayers bounding over to vanquish him. Dutifully, he explains that he is merely a demon by race and not by career. If that doesn't work, then sparks might fly.

History

"The Disciples went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him. ..

.. When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.

"What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won't torture me!" He shouted at the top of his voice, for Jesus had said to him, "Come out of this man, you evil spirit!"

Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?"

"My name is Legion," he replied, "for we are many."

And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.

A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. The demons begged Jesus, "Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them." He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region." (Mark 5: 1-17)

After his troops were flung into a herd of pigs, Legion knew he would be expecting a rather nasty employee evaluation the next month. More than that, the encounter with the Son of God shattered his worldview, leaving him quite alone and in need of a priority change. The ex-demon found himself painfully contemplating the words 'violent grace.'

Now that he had been 'dressed' and put in his 'right mind', Legion began to forge his own path. He had been thrust out of the norm and past the reasoning of any normal demon. Humans were no longer just objects to be tormented, they were objects to be envied. His attempts to 'do good' after the Event were timid. Could a demon achieve salvation?

Of course not.

Still, Legion was determined to make the best of what had happened to him. In the end, he feels he is better of for it. His prestige was traded for perspective -- and strolling around the human cities enjoying their foot and their entertainment, Legion realizes that it is here -- not in the Lower Berth -- where clarity is truly clear.

Legion struck up a friendship with Liesha Kennicot in her Victim Assistance years -- and with that friendship came a few consultation jobs. Though he could not become an SCD agent by reasons of birth (not that he'd ever become one) he has remained Liesha's close confidant over the years, watching curiously and with no small confusion as she proceeded to fall in 'love' with him.

He will do what he can, and when the FInal Trumpet sounds -- Legion has a feeling that his story will draw to a close.

So begins...

Legion Gerasene trotted down the stairs into the main floor of Gambit's Bar, tweaking the cuff of his suit jacket. He looked fresh-pressed as ever, humming a tuneless melody. He caught sight of Jade and Cloasse seated at the bar.

"There you are, Miss Galletti!" the ex-demon breezed past them, with a smile. "You were still in the bathroom when I left."

"A rather dramatic situation unfolded rather quickly, last night, and Miss Galletti found herself in a state of ill repair. I lent her my room, as she was quite unconscious," the ex-demon quipped.

It wasn't the voice so much as the presence. The only other tall, striking man in an expensive suit with a red tie. Legion tuned out Cloasse and Jade almost completely when he recognized the imprint of the demon before him.

"By the Flame!" the ex-demon whistled. "Baalberith!"

Whistling, a skill Legion had learned only recently, taught to him by Jadeling Tano herself. He had long been waiting for the correct situation to use it. This seemed appropriate. Of all the times, of all the places to see one from the Old Times .. it had to be now?

"A former colleague," said Legion in a low voice, and Jadeling was still.

"Fancy meeting you, indeed," Legion left the counter to meet his former co-worker. "I wish I could say I've been staying out of trouble .. but I have not. I apologize if anything's come across your desk since then."

This was likely.

"What brings you to Wing City?"

"My severance package was a kick out the door," Legion said shrewdly. "I cannot say I am proud of the circumstances of my removal, but what choice did I have?"

Legion Gerasene gave a laugh. The Secretary's sense of humor was sharp as ever. "I haven't touched a bite of pork, no, indeed."

"I've made friends, explored humanity, tried to understand what it is that Their Father Above deemed so special about them. I have learned them fickle, but stubborn as steel all in the same breath. Try getting to know one sometime," Legion winked.

"I expect things are much the same, in the Lower Berth?" Legion stroked his chin. "Did Aamon and Alluces finally get separate offices?"

Legion Gerasene chuckled. "I assume he hasn't forgotten. I hope I haven't become too large of a thorn in anyone's side."

"My pets?" Legion turned. Cloasse and Jade were still in conversation. "Oh. No. Those are not pets, those are friends."

Legion knew his newfound worldview bothered Phipps. He knew it bothered a lot of people. Despite their differences, it was good to sense a familiar presence again.

Legion Gerasene sighed a mighty sigh. It was probably best that Phipps had left. Legion wandered back over to where Jade and Cloasse sat.

He didn't know their names, but he knew their faces. He saw them every day, walking this same route in Wing City, staring out at him from the magazine stands with headlines over their smiles.

Legion Gerasene was a curious sort of ex-demon. He turned aside from his usual path, and strolled over to the magazine vendor's booth with his hands clasped behind his back. He cut a distinguished figure in his single-breasted suit, every hair in place as he took in the latest news in celebrity gossip.

"Like what you see?" the vendor grunted.

The ex-demon tapped his chin thoughtfully. "I am not quite sure!"

Wing City was his new home, and it fit the nature of a person in his position. Enough chaos to feed his wild side, but enough of the finer things to keep him settled in and sane. These strange magazines, these tabloids seemed to blend both worlds.

He straightened, gave the vendor a winning smile, and continued on his way.

There was a rushing sound from the sky. Legion tilted his head slightly, garnet eyes taking in the sharp angular form of a spaceship. That wasn't at all an uncommon sight in Wing City, the ex-demon had come to realize, but one flying so low?

The magazine vendor clutched his hat to his chest. A mother and daughter out for a shopping trip hurried inside. A dog with eight legs, which had been yapping up a storm, became still, and fell back on its haunches to watch the display.

The ship disappeared from view. Legion continued his walk, eyebrows still drawn together in concern. There had been some symbol on the bottom of the shuttle, which he was not familiar with. This made him nervous.

Because the things that Legion Gerasene was not familiar with, were often very dangerous.

No one seemed to be panicking, but there was certainly a level of unease on the street. Legion kept his stride smooth as he continued to walk north, towards where the ship had disappeared between the buildings. He could not hear the thrum of engines, so assumed the visitor was gone .. but still. That had been awfully low ..

The eight-legged dog bounded past Legion, giving him quite a scare. It scampered ahead, claws scraping on the cement. It stopped short. It stared at him. Its forked tongue lolled out of its head. It dashed on.

You know something I do not! Legion mused. The dog turned a corner. With a dull feeling in the pit of his stomach, the ex-demon did the same.

A small company of uniformed and heavily armed individuals awaited him. The dog sat again, looking quite pleased with itself. Legion came and stood next to it, taking in the scene. These men were fanning out, their movements slow but deliberate. They had no time for a gentleman in Armani, and an eight-legged dog.

An eight-legged dog had fallen in with Legion hours ago, following him at a safe distance. The ex-demon paid it little mind. He was out and about in Wing City, enjoying a coffee here, a novel there, cutting a crisp figure in his suit. Why such a curious cross-breed creature had taken an interest in him did not weigh heavily on his mind.

It was one of those cool, but bright spring days. Wing City's temperate climate was bowing a bit to the chilly side. Legion had nothing better to do that enjoy Terra, and be alone with his thoughts.

A strangled yell behind him, now, and then a sharp bark. Legion turned. A man with a broom had stepped out of his shop, and was giving the mutant dog a harsh swat.

"Get back!" the gnarled old man growled, taking a defensive stance with the broom. "Back, I said!"

The dog gave a sharp bark. It drew its eight legs to its body, and scuttled away rather like a spider. Its ears were lowered and its spiky tail thrashed. The bark turned to a low growl, which subsided as Legion walked closer.

"What trouble is this creature giving you?" the ex-demon asked calmly.

The old man gave Legion an ugly look. "You're not from these parts, are you?" he grunted. "Keep away from those .. those things."

He shook the broom at the spider-dog once more. It lowered its head, and backed away a little further.

Others in the street were starting to notice. Some hurried by. Some stared, scowled, but at the dog, not the old man. Something was amiss.

"It isn't harming you," said Legion. He was unsure why he felt compelled to protect the creature - was it the fact that it had been following him? The ex-demon frowned.

The dog, perhaps sensing that the center of attention was not the best locale for one such as itself, slinked away, keeping its body low to the ground. Legion felt there was no purpose in engaging further with a man clutching a broom like a sword, and so gave a solem nod, and turned on his way.

The ex-demon felt eyes on the back of his neck as he continued on his way. He frowned, furrowed his brow, and resisted the urge to not turn once more and see who was looking at him so intently.
