There are people in the world who only look old and feeble.

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by abedlamsun

Description

Pluvius is a gnarled-looking old man, with an aquiline and thin lips, constantly curved up in a genial smile. He is missing his upper left arm and hand, as well as his right hand. The man wears a tattered, blue robe which shifts with his fluid gait. His eyes, usually closed in his smile, are a light blue that shine when exposed, rippling as if with the movements of water. He walks barefoot.

Abilities
Pluvius is a trained naturopath and aquamancer. The prior lends him a broad knowledge of natural poisons and cures, which he uses to his own ends; the latter allows him control over the water in the atmosphere, and water in any state. To use his active abilities, he must either speak the incantation (in Latin), or wait three seconds as charge time. His aquamantic abilities are:

- Wall of Fog: A thick fog covers him and his surroundings up to ten feet for five seconds, concealing anything covered.
- Wall of Steam: Superheated steam surrounds him at a distance of two feet away, the perimeter of the steam extending another five feet.
- Wall of Ice: For fifteen seconds, Pluvius extends a barrier of ice two feet thick around his person.
- Dome of Ice: For ten seconds, the barrier covers his entire body.
- Suspended River: Pluvius sends a bullet-speed burst of water at his target, which he can manipulate for five seconds.
- Ice Stalagmite: Water drips from a location of Pluvius' choosing, rapidly forming a stalagmite of ice.
- Spear of Ice: The tip of Pluvius' Asclepian staff forms a ten-inch long spear-tip of ice.
- Claris Aquis: A pool of water forms at a location of Pluvius' choosing, with a high refractory rate that magnifies light that hits the pool. Those within sight of it, and who do not close their eyes, will be blinded, including Pluvius.
- Robur Aquus: At a point of dangerous contact, Pluvius may briefly send up a superdense wall of water surrounding the intended contact for five seconds.
- Aqua Celerita (Passive): Pluvius' mastery of water has led him to move through flow at barely sub-sonic speeds in short bursts when not using active abilities, or simply move with an unnatural fluidity at a somewhat-faster-than-normal pace, tied to his current physical condition. (Hence, if he has no leg, it won't work that well. He cannot do flips and acrobatics.)
- Flow Sense (Passive): Pluvius is able to feel movement and disruption in his environment as if they caused ripples within it.
- Auric Control (Passive): Pluvius is able to, at the cost of his use of active abilities for the time, manipulate his aura and work on penetrating other auras.
- Audience At the Seat of Heaven: Difficult to maneuver, Pluvius spreads a salve of Raptor Vitae onto the person, infused with the water of his will, forming a connection between that person and him.
- Takeover of the Seat of Heaven: A draining move by which Pluvius augments the will of a person to his own.
(Note: Both abilities involving the Seat of Heaven will render Pluvius' active abilities useless for a day if they fail; the latter will render them useless for a day even if it succeeds.)

Though quick, Pluvius is not trained any any martial art, nor is he very strong. At the same time, he may only use one ability at a time, or, at a cost of fifteen seconds until next ability is used, use two in rapid conjunction.

History

Background History

Pluvius was born 186 years ago on the outskirts of Pisa, Italy. His family was killed in a house fire when he was six years of age, and he was left orphaned. Pluvius, while stealing to survive in the streets of Pisa, learned the ins and outs of the darker sides of human exchange, quickly becoming a clever negotiator and manipulator through necessity and his own natural wit. While stealing some grain from a merchant, Pluvius ran into the Grandmaster Giovanni, of the Aqua Arcana de Pisa. While studying at the school, he became romantically involved with a young woman, whom he engaged. She was murdered due to his connection to the school of Aquamancers, and Pluvius began his steady descent into madness, viewing the murder not as a direct consequence of his actions, but a result of an insidious game all humans played against each other. Pluvius deduced this was either won through luck or skill, and as he possessed not luck, he decided to build his skills.

At the end of his Aquamantic schooling, Pluvius discarded of all members of the Aqua Arcana, and began to work on his own to learn more about the skill of aquamancy. Several treatises by Pluvius still exist in aquamantic schools on the concept of 'Flow' - the aquamantic expression of space-time, and 'aqua celerita' - the 'quick water' technique developed by a mastery of one's will over water extending into the practitioner's motions, allowing the person to move through the Flow effortlessly. Pluvius had also written a theoretical essay toward the end of his tutelage, 'On the Nature of Tributarian Will', describing the counter-theory that each individual person was a tributary in Flow, and could learn to navigate through it by achieving mastery over oneself.

While travelling, about 142 years ago, Pluvius stumbled upon a village where the inhabitants were infected by a parasite that consumed and spread a 'rot' through the nervous system. After observing a Naturopathy master cure them, Pluvius himself decided to request the position as apprentice. After four years, Pluvius stumbled upon a theory regarding the connection of auric networks via the seventh seat of the auric network. Pluvius attempted this theory on his master, and failed; his master died, and Pluvius assumed the mantle, but continued to travel.

Recent History

Quite by accident, Pluvius became involved in a game with the Dragons of Time, and ended up taking over one's Seat of Heaven. Yosei inhabited his mind, only able to express herself through Pluvius if the latter felt he was in extreme peril or stress. Over the course of the game, Pluvius lost his right hand, upper left arm, and left hand, during altercations with the dragon, Jugan. Pluvius ultimately lost this game after Yosei returned her state to that of an unknowing oblivion, only to have it stolen back after his second confrontation with Jugan. In exchange for surgery on his arms, a young woman, Terraa, has requested he bring the soul of a virgin, of his age (168) or higher, to her. Pluvius, seeking to culminate this game, is searching for an individual who can either supply and teach him of, or simply teach him of, neural-mechanical connective robotics. He is also working on manipulating a young woman, Regina, hoping to cultivate her as a tool for his own use.

So begins...

Pluvius continues smiling; what prevented him from speaking truth with a smile, after all? There was still some determination in the young woman, and Pluvius could feel the excitement of a chase building, but quickly suppressed that emotion. This was a strange place, anyone could complicate his mischief, and he hated fighting.

"My people say something. 'Mors ultima linea rerum est,' or, spoken more plainly, that death is the final line for things. Just as all people have their roles, they must leave the stage at some point. What lies after that, for some, may be a greater happiness than we may give them." Pluvius' words to Regina carried the tone of simple philosophy, but the meaning was clear: the young woman could not bring her sister the kind of solace death could.

Pluvius retained his smile as he brought the cup up to his lips, taking a small sip of the still hot tea. Yes, this was nostalgic. He could feel Regina's doubt and fear so tangibly that it was as if it had wrapped around him. At the deepest levels of his mind, while he simply sat and enjoyed a couple more sips of his tea, he felt the ecstasy of such utter manipulation of another person, of such utter control over another self. Pluvius never cared to examine this warped part of his personality, as at least part of his speech was true: he believed a person was locked into their tendencies, even if they could change their roles in the script. Setting his cup down, he said gently to Regina,

"The young think with the burden of inexperience; perhaps you should lean on someone with the strength to bear other burdens. We all have our roles to play within the script, dear girl."

Pluvius grinned broadly behind her back. The expression was one of pride that a master would feel for a student, for reaching an enlightenment or epiphany. Truth be told, as he felt the subtle moisture enter his range of manipulation, a selfish thrill ran through him before he suppressed it, and a moment passed before a tear dripped down Regina's eye, at his own subtle bidding. Pluvius spoke softly, "It is sometimes tears which bring us to happiness faster than smiles, young one."

Pluvius smiles back at Regina. That seed of doubt would, ironically, without doubt, grow. Still, he gave it one last push towards germination, and leaned forward, over his still steaming tea. "It is sometimes said that the Fates test us by giving us an unwinnable situation. The only method to pass that test is to run away from the situation, to avoid speaking one's final line prematurely.'

Pluvius leaned back, finishing the last sip of his tea, unsurprised that Regina had not noticed that the liquid remained hot for the entire time they spoke, rather than cooling off quickly. After all, he had taken steps to ensure her distraction and his enjoyment at her expense; those last words, spoken like friendly advice, carried the message: try to help your sister, and find out what death is like.

Pluvius kept his smile, nodding gently as he rose with a fluid motion. "It is likely for her good and your own." Pluvius spoke quietly, looking down at Regina with his kind smile plastered on his face; for just one moment, it was possible that she could see something about it that was unkind, completely removed and uncaring. It was gone with the next moment, and then he spoke again, "Would you care for a drink? Even those of us reaching our twilight sometimes enjoy a bit of distraction from our worries."

Pluvius grinned paternally. "Very well, dear girl. Don't run for too long." With that, Pluvius stepped gracefully around the table, his fluid, barefooted steps carrying him toward the counter of the bar. He was satisfied with his progress with Regina, and figured he would either meet her again or she would come back to him, searching for a surrogate grandfather. The old man took his seat once more, next to the staff that was, a little surprisingly to him, still there. The smile on his face and his eyes closed, he called out brightly, "Bartender, if you have a second, may I have a glass of red wine?"

Pluvius watches the exchange between Keiga and Ryszard, the prior seemed...amused? The latter was in high spirits, but he could feel a bit of impressionability within that man. Once they were through with his exchance, Pluvius would ring out with his pleasant voice, still all smile and closed eyes, "Bartender, if you aren't too busy, perhaps I could ask for a red wine."

Pluvius smiles, speaking clearly as he brings the glass up to his nose. "Ah, a good wine generally cleans one's soul, some people will say." He took a sip, then brought the glass back down, looking up at Ryszard. "What do you think, bartender?"

Pluvius chuckles kindly, regarding the words carefully. They had an art to them, and, as Pluvius leaned forward and took another sip, he felt how the liquid slid against the glass. Ryszard's words, to Pluvius, were absolutely superficial. "Ah, but, my dear boy," he begins, still smiling as he turns his face toward the bartender, "Does not the best wine have as rich a taste served in a flagon, as it does in a glass?"

Pluvius lets out a small chuckle, taking another sip of his wine. The man was a connoisseur in the making, the kind he stole from when he was a younger body because he envied their stuff. Now, as Pluvius felt the light admiration Ryzsard felt at his words, he placed the glass back down, and spoke once more. "My boy, quality does not mean it is not simple: the simplest of wines, I have found over my years, can sometimes be the most emotionally satisfying."

Pluvius felt only the emotion; he was only an empath, not a telepath. Still, Pluvius could garner that the new bartender was quickly finding himself running out of options. The old man now had a choice: to either humiliate the boy, or to twist his view of the world. As usual, none of this intent showed on his face as he took another sip, smiling, and then spoke to Ryzsard once more, "You may be, my boy," he began cheerfully. "I remember a tavern wench, a couple of decades back. She smiled like an angel, and the rum she brought to me was most satisfying; not because it was particularly exceptional, but because of the cheerful demeanor of that young woman." Pluvius failed to mention that the wench had died at her own hands, a few weeks after he left the bar.

Pluvius grins. Admiration, that was a new one. Perhaps this young one was a little more pliant than he had assumed. Pluvius wondered whether or not he should continue toying with this one, or simply ignore him. Perhaps the old man would allow that feeling to grow stronger, and then dash it at its zenith. Taking another sip, he let the glass down with a fluid motion as he addressed the man. "I have been here only a short time longer than you. My only knowledge of this place is that its selection of vintages is not the only diverse thing about it," he chuckled a little at his own joke.

Pluvius laughs softly as the first lyric of the song played on the radio, in the middle of his next sip of wine. The irony struck him rather harshly, and he regarded the young man with a smile. There was embarrassment there; did this hint at Ryszard's own preferences for wines. "Tell me, will you," he said genially, "what kind of wines do you enjoy most, when you are lonely?" He put emphasis on the words 'wine' and 'lonely.'

Pluvius chuckles softly, turning his smile to Yosei, nodding and waving his free hand in a 'Ciao' salute, then turning to take another sip of his wine. After his sip, Pluvius made no more probing into Ryszard's preferences. Not yet at least. Instead, he replied, "I generally do not mind what my wine is, as long as it fills me with warmth and slides down my throat." He gave a small chuckle after his cheerful utterance, laughing, seemingly, at the joke. In reality, though no tone could clue in on it, the laugh came from a derisive feeling deep within Pluvius' being.

Pluvius continues to smile even as he feels the annoyance resonate from Yosei. He turns his head in mid-sip, and brings the glass back down to the counter smoothly. "There is a saying that Hell hath no fury as a woman scorned. Somehow, in this seat, I can feel the truth in that." He laughed kindly, and leaned a bit on the counter with his elbow. "Forgive an old man's rambling," he then addressed Ryszard as well, "I am called Pluvius."

Pluvius repeats the man's name slowly, the pronunciation twanged with a Southern Italian accent as he does so, but following the Polish phonology rather well. After this, he then replies to Rsyzard's offer, replying gently, "My dear boy, I have already said this wine is fine. No need to bother yourself trying to please an old man." The last part of the sentence came out with a small chuckle, as if he had delivered a little joke. As Yosei's aura smacked against the young man, Pluvius placed a comforting hand in front of her on the counter, "My dear girl, far be it from me to disturb you, but it is generally better to relieve your annoyances through words, than such rough displays," the words were said cheerfully, the genial smile on his face. Pluvius wasn't going to let her spoil his fun.

Pluvius continues to smile genially, but stands with a fluid grace, rushing up to his feet like a river. He looked down at Yosei, his smile not even faltering for a moment before he leaned forward, and whispered directly to her ear, "In anger, young one," he began, unnervingly cheerfully, "many warriors find their deaths."

Pluvius laughs cheerfully, and then draws back to his full height. Pluvius gave a single thought, 'A river can crumble a stone,' before replying with a genial lilt to his voice, "I do not kill unless there is a direct, fatal threat to my person. I would suggest, young woman, that you do not try to kill me. After all, what is a hot-blooded murder to an individual of any pride?"

Pluvius laughed quietly. Pluvius struggled to keep the frustration from his mind, the word 'Bitch,' from appearing in his thoughts, restricting it to a lower level of conscious. The old man stepped quickly, with fluid grace, behind Yosei, as if a rapid in a river. Placing a hand on her shoulder, he whispered yet again, this time the cheerfulness tinged with a threat, "I don't know the kind of values you have, young woman, but a man does not keep other people as his toys."

Pluvius steps back with the force of the aura, matching its propulsion with his steps as if rippling in the water. Still grinning at Yosei, he decided to go the other way, "Kill the boy. If you are this intent on it, go ahead, he's really nothing to me." He laughed quietly as the though concluded, opening his eyes to mere slits, the flowing, bright blue of his irises locked on the young woman.
