Tanner Morley

"At the end of the day, I'm still the agent with the girliest name on the team according to Romanae. And she's a girl. I think."

Description

Special Agent Tanner Morley

ImageTanner Morley's a simple guy with a simple purpose - he sits in the Multiple Threat Assessment Centre and fields every single issue that crosses his screen. He's in charge of alerting the Director to the big threats, his supervisor (usually a very wise old man called Greg, but currently a hormonal and pregnant Romanae Retna) gets the medium threats, and he gets to deal with the little threats all by himself.

But with the SIB short-staffed after an attack on their building, Tanner finds himself out of his comfort zone and actually on the field. With near-strangers backing him up and a weapon in his hands entirely unlike a keyboard and mouse, suddenly his purpose isn't nearly as simple.

Now he has to deal with people.

SIB Special Agent Tanner Morley is currently a part of the MTAC team in the Special Investigations Branch of the Wing City Police Department. These agents deal only with crimes committed by or against police or military personnel. MTAC (Multiple Threat Assessment Centre) personnel are highly trained operatives and primarily operate from the secure office within the SIB building. Whilst many agents have access to MTAC, few have access to the equipment used within the centre and authorisation from the Director of the SIB, Mordecai Tavi, is required prior to access being granted to those without clearance.

Tanner has successfully completed his probationary year as an agent and has had several years of training in the latest technological advances employed by MTAC staff. Due to his calm, collected nature, Tanner is confident in front of a screen and uses his intellect to best resolve the issues presented to him.

So begins...

Ruby was crying her eyes out. She was lost and scared and everytihng around her had changed. She didn't know exactly how she'd ended up here, she'd just woken up after sleeping at Evans' place and being here. Here was nasty and horrible. Men would come in and do things. Things with her. Things she hated. Things that hurt. If she didn't do it, the boss would hurt her.

Sitting in the corner, Ruby's once long red hair had been cut to her ears as a bob and died black. She was covered in bruises and dressed only in her underwear. She didn't get clothes because she hadn't managed to follow the correct orders. That's what he told her. And they'd changed her looks in case someone had noticed her missing, not that they would. She had no one.

With that, Ruby cried her eyes out even harder.

Tanner liked his office. It was a big office, with a few other people in it and massive screens for video conferencing and surveillance. Tanner like to be on the viewing side of the screen, because from there his analytical mind could happily pick out points of interest and strategies regarding contact with hostile enemies.

Now he was on the other side of the screen with a tiny speaker hidden away within his ear, and a microphone sewn into the false pocket of his shirt. Tanner didn't like this. Tanner couldn't see everything from where he was, being led down a hallway and into an equally dank room, wherein cowered a woman he couldn't identify. Undercover work sucked.

He had an eighty-five percent chance of getting out of here alive. The poor girls they were meant to rescue had a mere forty-three percent, depending on how malnourished or injured they were.

Some were probably dying already. Tanner felt his stomach heave, but he damped down on the feeling with a firm foot and instead secured the door behind him - there wasn't much he could do bar jamming a pin in the lock, but that was enough; they had to be able to get out, after all.

Wait. Girl. In the corner. Crying. The human element that Tanner was least comfortable in dealing with. "Umm..." Should he explain? Would she scream for help? He was sure there'd been training regarding hostage and victim control, but that was years ago and -

"Are you okay?" he asked, slowly kneeling until he was on level with the girl from across the small room. His voice was low, quiet and calm. "My name is Special Agent Tanner Morley. I'm here to help you."

Ruby's head snapped up as someone entered the room. She tensed in fear knowing what was supposed to happen. Her knees were up at her chest and she was hugging her legs. Her eyes were stuck on him, watching him do something to the door which sent shivers down her spine.

"Don't hurt me." Ruby finally whispered.

She watched him kneel and then speak again, saying his name. Ruby was shaking, cold and scared. She was dirty and definitely malnourished, but she was malnorished before she'd even arrived. It was just worse now. So lost and scared, Ruby said the only two things she knew.

"I'm Ruby and I'm pregnant with your baby." She told him, wiping her eyes.

Oh dear. Okay. He could deal with this. He'd seen Special Agent Retna's sister once. He could deal with this.

"That's okay," Tanner said slowly as he shrugged off his jacket. He stood and crossed the distance between them to offer the garment to her. "Why don't you keep the baby warm?" If she were delusional, the last thing she needed would be for him to break it - and her - even more. "I'm here to get you out, Ruby, do you understand that? I need you to understand what I'm saying because I'm going to be telling you what to do so we both get out of here safely." There were other agents in the building, just like him, with nothing but a microphone and their fists for protection. There were agents outside, too - it hadn't taken them long to figure out that this wasn't just a den of impurity; this was human trafficking.

"Can you stand up, Ruby?"

Ruby took the jacket and managed to get it around her so that it covered her small frame and kept her warm and protected. "Keep the baby warm." She mumbled, though she didn't look pregnant. But then again Ruby never had looked pregnant whenever she announced it. But then again, until she ended up at Evans place she'd never been intimate with anyone -- not like she'd given her concent with Evans either.

"What if he gets us? He said I can't leave. If I leave he'll punish me and it'll hurt real bad. It always hurts because I never do it right. I just want to go back to the home before I met this place. I just want the unicorns and the rainbows and the glitter and all the nice happy things." Ruby cried, not exactly being quiet now.

Finally Ruby managed to calm down a little and nod her head. She could stand up. Her foot hurt though, but in the dim light it could been seen that it had been dislocated or hurt badly in the past, the bruising was all black and purple around it.

"It's okay," Tanner shushed her, and he placed an arm gently around her waist so as to better support her. "Ruby, I need you to listen to me, okay? I need you to be really, really brave and stop crying. Your baby needs you to be brave, yeah? When we get out of here, I'll make sure someone gives you glitter and happy things, 'kay? I'm sure I can do that."

He had to get them out first. There was voice in his ear - Retna - telling him that they had to start moving now. One of the threats had been reduced and now they had to go.

"Come on, Ruby, it's time to go," he murmured. The door had taken little more than a light bang to unlock - the pin was purposefully fragile - and then the agent was gently guiding Ruby out of the room with as much haste as he could get her to muster.

"Oh shi - Retna, I need directions."

The hallways ran everywhere. The place looked small on the outside, but inside it was like a maze. A long maze. And worst still everything looked identical. It was made to look like that so that people trying to escape would get lost and confused and eventually found. Shaking her head, Ruby nodded at Tanner's words. "I can be brave." She told him.

She moved with him, limping slightly and looked around, trying to figure out what to do or how to help. "This way." She pointed, sure that she was right. Honestly Ruby had no idea where she was supposed to go. She tried to move in the direction that she wanted to go in when a man suddenly rounded a corner.

"What the hell are you doing, slut?" He growled, looking at Tanner. "You better get her back in that room."

"Isaacs just passed a hostile and he's approaching your --"

"Oh shit." Retna paused during her speech, listening with Tanner as the man spoke.

"Tell him something, Morley, anything."

"I'm leaving, and she's directing me out of the building," Tanner stated, voice feeling slightly more confident than the desk agent felt.

"Not that, not that. Tanner, steel yourself. Iante's coaching Smith through a broken nose right now. They'll hit you harder than you'll want to hit them."

Tanner grimaced, curling his fingers into fists. He spent a moment deliberating, and then he moved forward with a grim determination he'd seen on the faces of agents he directed. And then he swung a fist at the man, hoping beyond hope that he'd remember to put his weight on the right foot.

He hoped Ruby was okay.

As soon as Ruby saw him, she froze. The fear he had over her was uncomprehendable as soon as Tanner had let her go, she was straight back in her room, in the corner, doing as she was told so that she didn't get a beating from the male. It didn't matter that Tanner had promised to get her out. No, she just wanted to avoid a beating.

"Fuck that, you're not stealing my whore." The man growled before moving closer to Tanner. At least his slut was finally learning where her place was, he noted as he watched to see her move back into her room, even if she was limping.

When Tanner threw his punch, the male hadn't exactly been expecting it. He was bigger and more muscled (in his opinion) than Tanner, and hadn't expected someone to be that brave. Most were afraid of him. No one had ever thrown a punch at him, and he was drunk. His reflexes weren't as fast and because of the alcohol and drugs in his system, he still hadn't realised they were undercover.

The punch hit his jaw, angering him, and so he swung his arm back at Tanner as soon as he got to his senses and recovered from Tanner's surprise hit.

Tanner, meanwhile, had been expecting the retaliation - and with Romanae barking orders into his ear with successful extraction, he was finding himself more and more determined to succeed. Realistically, if he failed to get out with a girl, he wouldn't be seen as a failure; he was a desk agent, this wasn't his forte. Even though Romanae was currently telling him that he'd better get out of there alive or else, he knew that he wouldn't be penalised if he didn't get out in one piece.

But he still wanted to get Ruby out, and the chances of that happening if he got himself hurt would dwindle startlingly fast.

He ducked beneath the man's arm and instead threw his leg out to catch the back of the man's knee with the hopes of bringing him to his knees.

He fingers hurt now. And where the hell had Ruby gone?

Due to the male not being 100% sober, his reaction was slower. His punch was off and Tanner managed to duck. It was daytime outside, normally this place was alive in the night so no one had being expecting this. Most of the men had been drinking and getting paperwork ready to sell girls on or get other girls from other shipments. And that's exactly what this man had been doing.

So when Tanner's leg caught the back of his knees, he fell. His head cracked down on the floor as he fell and with that, the drunken man was knocked out and didn't look like he'd be moving anytime soon. Meanwhile Ruby was back to her usual room and corner, not wanting to move at all as she mumbled incoherent things to her self, her knees back at her chest, her eyes closed and her hands covering her ears.

Tanner swore, shaking his hand and mentally chastising himself for not punching with the proper side of his hand whilst Romanae warned him that time was closing in on them and they had to get out. The agent returned to the room after deciding that the thug wasn't going to get back up again, and he slowly approached Ruby.

His pulse was racing.

"Ruby." He wanted to be sharp, wanted to tell her to snap out of it and get going, but he couldn't because that would be cruel and it wouldn't help. It was just adrenaline, he told himself, just adrenaline trying to get him out of the danger zone as quickly as possible. "Ruby, we need to go now. I promise that no one will hurt you again."

Romanae snorted in his ear.

Ruby looked up as someone came into the room and she saw it was Tanner. She expected someone else behind him but no one else entered. The man was gone. Ruby stayed where she was for a few moments before slowly finally getting to her feet, even after everything, due to the few loose screws in her head that had gotten her into this situation in the first place, she still put her trust in someone else that she'd just met.

"And with the baby. And when we can get married, and have a fence and a house and a dog and live happily ever after." She told him, with not as much enthusiasm as she normally would have telling people that. "And the baby will be really happy." She told him.

She followed his direction at least, trusting that he'd still lead her out. "Evans said he would look after me and his baby. He had a nice place but he must have lost me. Someone must have taken me." She told him, referring to the man that had sold her into this business in the first place.

Tanner nodded, happy to indulge her fantasies as long as she was moving and they could both get out. Romanae directed him through the earpiece and he kept a firm hold of her arm with one hand whilst he held her steady with the other arm around her back. "Exactly. White picket fence, a dog, marriage certificate framed on the wall next to baby's first smile and all of that nice stuff," Tanner hummed. He wasn't really paying attention to what he was saying. His brain was factoring in what Ruby told him and then spitting out something that sounded reassuring. "I don't think Evans could have looked too hard to find you if I had to come get you," he added, thoughts on the directions Romanae was giving him.

"Look, here, last left and then we should be home free."

Ruby managed to move with Tanner, though her ankle was hurting a lot, Ruby was too busy talking about the white picket fence. She was traumatised from everything that had happened, and with her unstable mind it wasn't a good mix. And Ruby was a nice girl. She just wanted to be happy and settle down and have her family, though she'd gone about it in completely the wrong way.

When they finally turned the last left and came out of the brothel Ruby used her arm to block the sun which was way too bright when she'd been stuck in a cold dark place for months. "I need to go home now." Ruby told him, not even thinking about the fact that she needed medical treatment, interviews among other things. "I need to go and find my things so that I can tell that me and the baby is okay." She tried to let go of Tanner though Ruby had no idea where she was or how to get home.

"Hey, hey, Ruby," Tanner didn't let go of Ruby, instead opting to keep a firm hold so that he could make sure she didn't hurt herself. "It's okay, I've got you. Look, there are people here to help you and check the baby. Your ankle looks really bad," he noted, pointing down. "Better get that checked out first, otherwise you might fall and hurt the baby."

In his ear, Romanae was telling him to ditch the fruit loop already. Tanner pulled the earpiece out and shoved it into a pocket. "Come on - there's an ambulance right over here." He gestured at the row of three ambulances, as well as the medical team composed of Iante and Doctor Grey. "Look, our medic has clothes for you, too."

Sure enough, Iante was handing out scrubs and SIB t-shirts to those who were... attempting to preserve their dignity and failing.

"But..." Ruby was torn between what her mind wanted her to do and what Tanner was saying. When he pointed to her ankle, she looked down and saw how bruised and swollen it was. And for the first time she noted that it hurt. But he won out with the baby. Ruby wanted to look after the baby. Though, she'd never had a baby in her when she'd said she'd had one before, was she just saying the same thing because it was what she did? It was highly unlikely that they would have done checks within the brothel.

Ruby wasn't exactly preserving her dignity. She'd tried that at first and soon learned that she couldn't. So now Tanner's jacket was just hanging open on her small frame. When they finally got to the medics, Ruby took the scrubs and tshirt, managing to eventually get it on herself.

"I need my ankle looked at so I don't hurt the baby by falling." Ruby told them, repeating Tanner's words.

Tanner was tired. He wasn't going to lie to himself (his team leader, sure) and pretend that he wasn't exhausted after the long day he'd had. What had started out as a brothel raid ended up with a massive furore over human trafficking in the SIB office. There were still witnesses to interview when he got back, too, but he had a sneaking suspicion that Romanae hadn't been as blind to his sleepiness as he'd hoped.

As it was, he was in his car (a neat and tidy black Saab) with one of the girls they'd pulled from the brothel. Ruby.

"So..." It felt awkward. Was it awkward for her? He wasn't used to interacting with victims. "Are you warm enough? I can turn the heating up, if you're cold. I mean, if you're not cold that's fine, but..."

Finally, Ruby's ankle had been sorted out. It wasn't broken, but it had been dislocated and put back into place badly at some point before she'd been rescued. They'd strapped it up and she'd been checked over by the ambulance but she hadn't wanted to go to the hospital. Because they had to interview her, she'd been allowed to go straight there once it had been confirmed that she was okay.

In the interview room though Ruby had been distracted and confused, talking about things that weren't anything to do with the brothel. Eventually though, they'd managed to get everything they could out of her. She'd been given clothes and was warm, and even had a pair of shoes. She'd been told she was pregnant, but all she'd done was deny such a thing.

"I'm warm. Your car is nice. It should be pink though. Pink is nice. I love pink." She told him, staring out of the window and watching to find where she lived before Evans place.

"Pink is nice," Tanner agreed absently as he slowed to turn into a side street. He was hoping beyond hope that she was going to tell him to keep going all the way through this part of town; it wasn't the nicest of places. "I mean, it's a girly colour nowadays, but it wasn't that long ago that pink was a masculine colour used for young boys because it was linked to red and red was the fiercer, stronger colour, whereas blue was the colour associated with virginity because the Virgin Mary is usually depicted in blue clothing... I don't know why it changed."

Tanner sighed, shaking his head. Babbling wasn't good. "Sorry - you didn't need to know that."
