If there's one thing that people tend to remember about Rainier long after he's left their company, it's his eyes. They're no spectacular color, being a rather dull green, but there's this gleam in them that sticks with people. It's this friendly gleam that, combined with the mop of unruly blonde hair on his head, give him this rakish debonair look. Standing a fair height of nearly six feet, Rainier inspires this feeling of openness. He has an honest face, and people have told him there's just something about him that makes it easy to spill their guts to him. With a lean, wiry body frame, he has a tendency to run his hands through his hair, giving him perpetual bedhead.

Rainier is, above all else, real. He's very grounded, and does not drift in the land of whimsy as some of his dormmates tend to do. He likes to focus on the present, on the issues at hand. People tend to go to him to settle disputes, as he's known for being incredibly fair in his idea of justice. He makes no assumptions, but rather examines all the facts at hand carefully before coming to a decision. When he's unsure whether he can accurately extrapolate a fairly unbiased account of events from two differing witness accounts, he'll often go out of his way to seek a third, uninvolved, witness to help him get a better idea of the truth. There is little more important to Rainier than truth. He is relentless in his seeking of it and has been known, at times, to become so absorbed in some quest for some truth that he completely shuts out the rest of the world. This seems to be one of his few unhealthy habits.
Despite being incredibly amiable and friendly, Rainier does not appreciate being double-crossed. He's very much a "broken trust cannot be restored" kind of person. Anybody who he's deemed a betrayer will have a difficult time getting back into his good graces, and even then, they will never experience the same level of friendship he may have given them before. He is trying to get over this, knowing that is easy to hate and difficult to love, but there will always be a wall there, and he will never place complete confidence in a person who has deceived him once before.
As far as philosophers go, Rainier tends to be the least experimental in his work. Being a fan of math and equations, he's not a fan of the unknown. Given a problem or equation, he could sit down and ignore food or sleep for days in order to solve it. He does, however, recognize that the universe is a thing of infinity and something that no human will ever be able to comprehend. He realizes that the only world he lives in is a world of human perception. That anything he takes as fact may be entirely wrong according to another scale. And frankly, that terrifies him. He prefers not to think about it. Numbers are the one thing that can never be wrong, so he doesn't take a fancy to acknowledging that they very well could be according to a different perspective. He focuses very much on his world. There's nothing he can do to change infinity, or the universe, so he finds little point in worrying about anything beyond his sphere of influence. He's a surprisingly humble person, and he realizes just how prone to error his mind is. He's only human, and he appreciates and accepts constructive criticism with ease. He can't help but laugh at people, fools, who think they are not ignorant in all affairs of the world in some way or another.
If there's one thing that cannot be doubted, it's that Rainier is good with people. Very good. It's as though he has this face, or this way of carrying himself, or something that makes people almost instantly take a liking to him. He's the person people go to if they want to talk about their problems. Often, he gives some good advice, but sometimes he just sits and listens if he knows that's all a person needs. Rainier tends to be on fairly good terms with nearly everyone as he's the person who could make friends in a desert.
He's happy. Always. Or, at least he appears to be. Even if he's feeling down one day, he will always be ready with a peppy smile. His idea is that if you pretend to be happy, eventually it becomes genuine. Besides, no point in bringing everyone else down with you, right? Even so, Rainier is very rarely sad. He has his off days, of course, everyone does, but there's never really been a day lately where he's been truly and utterly miserable. He forges ahead in his life through every mistake, continuing to push, and knowing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel eventually. He never ceases to hope, recognizing that hope is often the first step in succeeding to accomplish a dream.
{"I am indeed amazed when I consider how weak my mind is and how prone to error." }

As far as back stories go, Rainier's is fairly normal. He's had his fair share of growing up to do, and with that maturing came experiences (some tragic, some wonderful) he wouldn't forget for the world, but still nothing extraordinarily unusual.
Born in the late evening to a lovely couple in Paris, Rainier would have never ended up at Arcane University had a long series of events not occurred. When he was only one, his mother died. A case of pneumonia made complicated by sepsis led to Rainier's father having to say goodbye early to the love of his life. In response to the grief, the man took his child and moved to Stockholm, where they remained until Rainier was thirteen. Swedish was his first language, and Sweden his home. He grew up in a small apartment with his father, and though he never knew his mother, he felt her lack of presence through his father. Despite everything though, Rainier's father was a hard-working business man who did everything he could to adequately provide for his son and loved him quite a bit. So Rainier could never complain.
Even as a child, Rain was charismatic and amicable, always surrounded by plenty of friends. His father used tell him he got his winning personality from his mother. He engaged in plenty of different activities: soccer, the debate team, lacrosse, and many others. Above all else though, Rain loved to read. He consumed any book he could get his hands on. He started as any other young boy would, with action novels and spy books, but he quickly graduated to classics, and by twelve he had accumulated an impressive resume, including Catcher in the Rye, The Count of Monte Cristo, and plenty others.
He had thoughts and questions more advanced than any other child in his grade could even think of thinking or asking, and school was not enough to satisfy his urgent need for knowledge. He joined an online discussion forum, where people of all ages talked about various different works of literature, some he had never even heard of. The experience encouraged him to read more and more complex works. Some of them he couldn't even begin to comprehend, of course, but others he learned to adore.
A few months after Rainier turned fifteen, his father was promoted. Unfortunately, with this promotion came a new office location. One in the United States. And although Rain was less than eager to leave behind his entire life, in a few months the two of them were already settled into their new house. Thanks in part to the Swedish language education and in part to his natural intelligence and ability to pick things up quickly, he adjusted relatively easily to the new language and life he had to accommodate to. But for the first few months of classes, when English was still strange to him, he found comfort in his mathematics class. He had always been good in maths class, but with the move he discovered a new appreciation for the numbers. Eventually it was literature and math that became his two great loves. Long after he learned to speak English fluently and with a hardly recognizable accent, he held math near and dear to his heart.
It was in his senior year that his English teacher introduced him to philosophy. He had been questioning plenty of things for a long, long time, but he soon found a sense of companionship in the words of philosophers. He was not alone in his questions. And he soon discovered that many of these minds could word possible answers far better than he could. When he was offered a scholarship to Arcane University, he couldn't refuse. His teacher spoke highly of their English courses, and after doing some digging into their classes, he found their math classes to be top-notch as well. He was placed into the Ink Saber Dorm based on the merit of his essay. He's currently double majoring in mathematics with a focus on theoretical mathematics and philosophy.
I'm underneath it all tonight
Out my window there's a million lights
Thousand hearts feeling just like me
Man, it feels like Heaven out here in the street
I know I got a lot to learn
Breaking bottles only left me hurt
Play with fire 'til I burn myself
Don't you know that love will bring us somewhere else?
So you take the left, I'll take the right
Under arrest, we're under fire
Oh oh oh oh
I don't wanna go to Heaven if I can't get in
You take the low, I'll take the high
You lock the gate, I hear the choir
Everybody got a problem with the way I live
I don't wanna go to Heaven if I can't get in
Maybe I should take my time
And build this life by my own design
With no direction that is in between
Everything I love and everything I need
So bring it back, all I want is understanding
To live my life the way that I planned it
Wouldn't change a thing
Man, it feels like Heaven underneath my feet
So you take the left, I'll take the right
Under arrest, we're under fire
Oh oh oh oh
I don't wanna go to Heaven if I can't get in
You take the low, I'll take the high
You lock the gate, I hear the choir
Everybody got a problem with the way I live
I don't wanna go to Heaven if I can't get in
So raise 'em up, raise 'em up
All I ever wanted was a shot at your love
I know, and I believe
Everything we got is everything we need
Oh, love will get you higher
I set my heart on fire
I know, it's what you see
Don't wanna go to Heaven if they don't want me
'Cause I'm no criminal
I'm not your enemy
All I have is life
And I don't wanna go to Heaven if I can't get in
So you take the left, I'll take the right
Under arrest, we're under fire
Oh oh oh oh
I don't wanna go to Heaven if I can't get in
You take the low, I'll take the high
You lock the gate, I hear the choir
Everybody got a problem with the way I live
I don't wanna go to Heaven if I can't get in
Oh, yeah, raise 'em up, raise 'em up
Everything you wanted is inside your cup
Drink up
Love will get you higher
Oh, oh, oh, I'm not your enemy.
I never met no criminal
And in the end I'll do it again
I don't wanna go to Heaven if I can't get in
Oh, I'm not a criminal
Yeah, I'm no enemy
It's just the way I live
I don't wanna go to Heaven if I can't get in
