Introduction
And round our souls entwine
While thy branches mix with mine,
And our roots together join.
Joys upon our branches sit,
Chirping loud and singing sweet;
Like gentle streams beneath our feet
Innocence and virtue meet.
Thou the golden fruit dost bear,
I am clad in flowers fair;
Thy sweet boughs perfume the air,
And the turtle buildeth there.
There she sits and feeds her young,
Sweet I hear her mournful song;
And thy lovely leaves among,
There is love, I hear his tongue.
There his charming nest doth lay,
There he sleeps the night away;
There he sports along the day,
And doth among our branches play.- Love and Harmony: William Blake. β
This roleplay is intended to be the first in a series of drama pieces charting the life and turbulent times of one English Village across the twentieth century. Never leaving the village where set, this roleplay will cover births, deaths, love and betrayal, political events and upheavals and perhaps most importantly will show how the work force, rules, sex, religion and class of a bygone era helps shape our modern day views.
Beginning in the May of 1914, our story opens with Political tensions running high; little do people know that the clock is quickly ticking for the onset of what will become one of the bloodiest wars in history. Tresslington Village in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales is furthest away from hostilities, or so the villagers believe, no one could imagine the horror just around the corner which could rupture this idyllic way of life.
Thompson Family:
Frank Thompson: Head of the household, Fred has lived in Tresslington his entire life and the farm which he lives and works has been in his family for more than five generations. Since his wife death the previous winter he has become somewhat of a outcast in the village; he life has spiralled out of control. His farm has fallen onto very difficult times and his heavy drinking does not help the situation. With the recent death of his wife and struggling to feed his family Fred has reached utter despair, unsure what to do his drinking has increased and so has the violence and hardship he lays on his sons. TAKEN
Will Thompson: The eldest son of Fred and Louise Thompson, he has recently turned nineteen, a head strong and handsome lad he has had a tough life. With the recent death of his mother, his fatherβs violence towards him and his brother has increased and so divides his time protecting his younger brother and trying to pull the family farm back from ruin. OPEN
Lucy Thompson: Just a year younger than her brother, Will, Annie too has been struggling since the death of her mother. It is hard not to think of a life she lost when her mother past away, her family was loving and kind and although they never had a great deal, what they did have made her thankful. Annie was joyous and vibrant, she could always be heard singing or laughing, now she seems to be a shell of her former self. RESERVED
Edward Thompson: Fifteen years old, Theodore has been forced to leave school by his father so he can work on the farm with his brother. He idolises his older brother with whom he gets up too many mischievous antics around the village; although he loves his brother dearly he is slightly jealous of the attention he gets especially from the girls in the village. OPEN
Clarke Family:
Dr George Clarke: George Clarke is a the village doctor and is very well respected within the community due to his generosity with the poorer villagers. A life long friend of Fred Thompson it saddens him deeply to see the way he is spiralling out of control; considered honourable, Clarke does have a secret of his own, one that could ruin him. Although married, with children he was deeply infatuated with Louise Thompson to the extent of having an affair with her for many years, it is possible he is the father of the youngest Thompson boy. TAKEN
Mary Clarke: Second wife of Dr Clarke, Mary Clarke is a stern woman whom some may even call silly at times. Once a maid for the Whittaker family, she moved up in status when she married Dr Clarke ten years ago and this caused a slight smugness within her. Step mother of Sara Clarke, she often finds herself clashing with the girl but does hold some affection for her as she could never have children of her own. OPEN
Sara Clarke: The only child of Dr Clarke and his first wife Dawn, Sara is very much the apple of her fathers eye. She is well educated, stubborn and passionate, traits her step-mother doesnβt really see as fitting and something they often argue over. Sara is a very caring and friendly individual who is often seen around the village helping her father with his patients. TAKEN
Whittaker Family:
Lady ELizabeth Whittaker: The matriarch of the house, she runs the household yet feels as if her authority is becoming increasingly challenged by her eldest son. Your typical Victorian aristocrat, she holds herself with a sense of superiority above those of a lower class. RESERVED
Henry Whittacker: Now in his mid twenties, Henry Whittaker is becoming increasingly tired of his mothers traditional practises in running the household and had began to challenge her for authority. Unlike his mother he is not afraid of change and thinks it would be good for his family. He is a very politically savvy man and is not ignorant about Britainβs struggles with Germany; he is positive that war is just around the corner. TAKEN
Joseph Whittaker: Just turned twenty, Joseph is very much the dark sheep of the family. He enjoys drinking, gambling and bedding the pretty women in the village. He is very caddish and not very well liked by others, especially by the fathers of the young women. His behaviour can quite often lead to fights with other men. RESERVED
Grace Whittaker: Twin to the above, Grace Whittaker is very much a well bred lady. Pretty and strong-willed, she knows what she wants and is not afraid to speak her mind. She is protected by her brothers and is very rarely let from their sight, so much so that she often feels suffocated. Her and Lily use to have a terrible feud, however recently the pair have struck up a friendship. TAKEN
Francis Family:
Rose Francis: Clara was married off at a young age to an elderly aristocrat who died from an influenza outbreak. George Franics was a very wealthy man. In the four years that they were together, Rose was not touched by him once, for reasons that could scandalise their name. Now a wealthy widow, who has asked her brother to come live with her, she finds herself on the outside of the female circles who believe she is overstepping her role as a female by owning a large house and lots of land. The rumors have died down a little, now that James has moved in. A man in the house, even if he is 18, is better than no man at all. TAKEN
James Stewart: James's is Rose's only brother although he was adopted into the family at age five. He grew up in their family's middle-class home. Rosa was sent to girls boarding school and when she returned she was married and moved away again. James loves his sister very much, and is the only person who knows of her late husband's secret. But James has a secret of his own. He has always held dear to the fact that he is of no real relation to Rosa. He has been fixated on her since she came home from boarding school and would rather kill someone than let them have her. James has a mother complex, a role that in his mind Rose has come to fill. "I'm sure you don't want to hang out with a kid like me, what brings you away from the festivities, other than Will?" She grinned.
"You're an adult, you can decide who you hang out with. Speaking of which, if you ever want to visit, I'm sure mother wouldn't mind you coming by." Audrey wiped dirt from the part on her dress she'd repaired on her own.
Henry ran up to Audrey and Vera shouting, "Save me he's gonna get me!"
Nathaniel was close behind and grabbed Henry, held him upside down and spun him around before laying him down. Nathaniel approached Audrey and Vera and said, "Hey sis, you just gonna watch them attack me and Will?"
"I'm watching you dirty your nice clothes and contemplating how angry mother's going to be." She smirked.
Henry shouted as he raised a stick above his head, "I got a sword dragon!"
"RAWR!" Nathaniel roared as he raised his hands over his head, impersonating a monster.
"Dragon? You know father doesn't like you giving him ideas like that."
"For using his imagination?"
"Are there dragons in your stories?"
"Maybe. Maybe not. It's my story, wait til its published."
"Dragon! Dragon!" Henry shouted as he ran back to the mob of children.
"Just don't let Father catch Henry saying those things."
"Henry! If you so much as mention the word 'Dragon' around father then a real dragon is going to come and eat you!" Nathaniel called to Henry who replied, "Noooo!"
Nathaniel had a playful grin on his face as he stared at Audrey. She had already learned how to imitate the face their mother would make when she wasn't pleased, but couldn't hold it for long before a smile crept across her face.
(OOC: maybe we should wait for others to post before carrying on)
"If he knew I was writing a story he'd burn it and give me more chores." Nathaniel said as his grin faded.
"He's burned one of his stories before." Audrey said.
"Would have been a best seller," Nathaniel said before running to catch up with Henry.
Audrey could tell Nathaniel was irritated and made a personal note to be at his defense later when mother saw their clothes.
"Yeah, father isn't a tyrant, except for imagination. Mother says the Infantry did it to him, but he only talks about that with her."

Morgan almost smiled at the compliment. The girl was brave, but slightly nieve. Still, she meant well. "Just because people expect it of you, doesn't mean you have any reason to do so. You hold your head high and don't let nobody tell you you're wrong. Don't pay attention to what they say about you, either. How do you think I've survived this long?" He allowed himself to actually smile this time. When he did, he didn't look so tired any longer.
"Thank you for helping me Morgan and I'm sorry for being a bother to you. Sometimes I can be so clumsy, it'll probably be the death of me some day." She said with a small giggle, though she really meant that. She was always tripping and falling, but this was the worse fall she'd had in awhile. "Um I think I'm going to head back to the festival, would you care to join me? I would really love the company for the walk back and to have someone that will be friendly with me when we get there." She asked him, really hoping he'd say yes figuring the more people she liked being there would make it easier to keep her head held up high.

Morgan's first reaction was almost instantaneous, and it was to tell her no. He didn't like being around people, as portrayed before, and he really didn't feel like going back. Still, he would not be the man that Sammuel had raised him to be if he let her walk back in her condition alone. The last thing the poor woman needed was some sort of infection.
Besides, there was something...oddly comforting about her presence, there was no denying that. She, he stood up, and gave her a slight half-smile. "Very well, My Lady, however, I have one condition." He wandered to his back room, still speaking loud enough for her to hear him. "I'm going to ask you that you do not call me Mr. Alistair. I fear I do not live up to be worthy of that man's name."
He re-emerged from his bedroom, donned with a fresh shirt. He wasn't wearing any shoes. "Add to that the fact that it makes me feel old. You can simply call me Morgan, my lady." And then, he even surprised himself by offering her his arm. "Shall we?"
When he held out his arm to her, she couldn't suppress a blush as she took his arm. She had no idea why she blushed, but she did though she tried hiding it best she could. "I-I also have one condition, just call me Rose or Rosie or if you absolutely feel the need you can call me Rosalind just not my lady. I may appear to be a lady and sometimes have to act like one, but I truly am not. I do not come from a family with money, it seems to be pure luck I ended up where I am." She said, trying to distract from her now fading read face. "Plus I am a human being just as you are a human being. I believe we should all be equal and treated the same." She added as she began to walk back to the festival with him.

Morgan smiled again. "I suppose we have a deal, then, Rose." It was surprisingly easy to refer to her by her first name. Morgan wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not. Still, he wasn't one to complain. They walked back slowly, arm in arm. Morgan couldn't help but notice that she blushed when she took it. He wasn't sure what to make of that. She did not have to take it if she was uncomfortabe, but then, something told him that that wasn't it.
Morgan was well aware he was inept at social matters. "I would give anything to have more people think like you. Still, it is nice to know at least someone thinks that way." He smiled down at her. "It's nice to be seen as something other than a demon-spawn." He made light of it all, but it did weigh heavily on him.
She stayed quiet for a few seconds, staring at the ground. Finally she looked back up at him with a smile. "But I couldn't afford to let them get me down, so please don't let the people of the village get you down." She said, trying to make the mood a little more cheerful. "You have my promise to always be your friend at the very least." She said happily.
