Setting
I stared at Dawn in shock, mutilate? Is she for real?
"I'm good" I looked at Theo. "What's going to happen to him?" I ask quietly, my gaze on the man who's held in a threatened position by Dawn. I stayed behind Theo, his tall frame covering my body from anything really, I looked form behind him a few times to make sure no one was hurt. I looked back and saw Adam on the phone.
Dawn was still sitting contently on the man, trying to get Adam's attention despite the fact that he was still on the phone. He just shook his head at her as he hung up, sitting down next to his best friend with a sigh. "Dawn, I hope you realize that if you mutilate him, your record for not going ballistic on anyone will be ruined, right?" He said slowly, like talking to a child.
She pouted and stuck her tongue out at him. "Damn you and your logic, raccoon boy."
Locked? I don't want people locked.
"Is there anyway we can not have him locked up?" I ask Adam who sat down not far away from me, beside Dawn. I don't know why I didn't want the man to get locked up. Adam and Dawn looked at me with a "After all we just did to get him off you" look.
"Never mind" Why am I being like this? Scared cat. I'm not like this, my mother didn't teach me to be like this for hell's sake.
Theo just looked at Angelina with a tired expression, letting up with the magic ever-so-slightly. "Should I even ask?" He sighed, sounding more like a confused but still not questioning it father by the minute. Adam wasn't exactly wrong when he said that Theo was the father figure of the town.
"Yeah I understand, guy honestly sorry for all the trouble I've caused." I sighed, I need to find my own place, I probably caused them more pain the last 24 hours than their past 2 years. I flew into this town like a tornado, with troubles behind me. I was about ot open my mouth when a very, VERY loud alarm started ringing everywhere, I didn't know where it was coming from but this is for sure not the police.
"THEO?" I screamed trying to figure out what was happening, Theo seemed to wake up a little, poor man, I kept him away for such a long time.
"Theo?" Dawn looked up at her uncle, suddenly quiet and frightened by the sound neither her or Adam had heard in the past. They were too young, they never would know unless they read Theo's memory.
"A human made it past the borders," he said, voice shaking as his hands began to tremble. The necromancer fell to his knees, unable to keep standing from the shock. "I failed. A human is in." He buried his face in his hands, tears slipping through his fingers.
"I couldn't protect you, just like I couldn't save them."
Theo fell down on his knees beside me, and started sobbing. I placed my hand on Theo's back and looked up at Adam and Dawn who were staring at each other. Theo's been helping me so much, so the only think I can do right now is two wrap my short arms around his big body.
"Theo it's okay, and so what that it's a human? Perhaps they are just lost in the woods and stepped into this area?" I asked, trying to make him stop crying. This situation must have been very painful, because you never imagine Theo crying.
"I couldn't protect you, just like I couldn't save them." he said, with a shaky voice.
"Of course you protected us, damn you saved my ass like five times these past two days!" I said, but don't mention "Them" who are "Them?"
"The last time humans got in, people died," he said quietly, though not quietly enough that Theo didn't hear. The man was still crying, but he wiped his eyes on his sleeve and tried to pull himself together.
"It's been seventy years since a human got in here," he said, more than a hint of bitterness in his voice. "It's been seventy years since humans got in and murdered my husband and children."
I stared at Theo is shock, I looked between him and Adam. Killed his husband AND children? Theo had children? Who was his husband?
"Oh my god Theo." I said with a sad voice, but not forgetting that humans that killed Theo's family might be here right now.
"Theo I really I'm so sorry, but if we don't do anything we might" I paused thinking of consequences. I looked over at Adam for support, I've never felt threatened by humans before.
"I second that, considering that my mom is a dragon and I don't want her injured or using human bones as toothpicks tonight," Dawn interjected, scooting towards Theo to give him a tight hug. "Plus, if we find the culprit first, we could avenge your lost family, Theo."
At the very least, that caught his attention. "I can't get them back, but I sure as hell will make those humans regret it." His fists were clenched, the bitter sound never leaving his voice. "Let's go."
I ran beside them all as Theo was taking big, fast steps. What are we doing?
"Are we going to kill someone?" I ask, confused, seconds ago, Theo was on the floor crying, now he's "running" towards a destination I haven't seen yet. I looked at Adam, was this the human who killed Theo's family? And what's his revenge? I'll have to ask Theo so many things later, when he's all calmed down and more like "Theo" sitting there with a muffin in his hand. I realized something and turned to Dawn.
"Your mother is a dragon?" I asked in a confused tone.
A loud screech that sounded like it would've come from a Jurassic Park movie sounded overhead, and a big grin stretched across Dawn's face. "And that would be her." She looked up to the sky, where two identical green dragons with red wings circled and play wrestled amongst the clouds, one slightly bigger than the other. "The big one's my mom, the other's my uncle Jenka. Those two and Theo are triplets, actually."
"My god, Theo is a necromancer, Adam is an angel, your mother is a dragon, who the are the others?" I asked in frustration, I think I'm closest to a human right now. Dawn chuckled. I stared at the two green and red dragons in awe, maybe regretting even mentioning the dragon part, but damn, I'm a witch, if I wanted to I could make her fall down in pain, hopefully.
"Um, hello" I mumbled shyly, looking down.
"Technically Adam isn't even the angel. He's just the vessel." Dawn shrugged slightly and immediately turned invisible again for a few seconds. "It's kinda like how demons possess people, but instead of a parasite from hell, he's got a rejected one from heaven." Adam proceeded to stick out his tongue at her, but Dawn just did it right back.
I nodded, understanding, all these new creatures are new to me, before this I've only met werewolves, vampires and spirits, but never demons or well necromancers, rejected angels and dragons, let's not forget the fairies.
After standing there awkwardly I realized I didn't actually know what to do, what's our next step?
"Um guys, so what now?" I asked, shifting on my feet, I didn't just want to stand there and watch them fight, or whatever they were going to do.
"So...are we splitting up to cover more ground, or sticking together for strength in numbers?" Adam interjected, nervously spinning the bracelet around his wrist again.
"I'm fine with splitting up," Dawn said with a shrug. "Two and two, so we have a better chance?"
It's a weird feeling trying to catch something you're so familiar with, a human, I've grown up with humans, I see them everyday, well obviously not anymore since I'm "stuck" in this city, but also I think I'm more similar to one, I don't have any wings, or claws, or fangs or even a special size, which makes me closer to a human than anybody, probably. Everything that made me different is words and belief in the magic I was performing.
"Two and two, so we have a better chance?" asked Dawn, I looked at her, every horror movie I've watched (which aren't many at all), splitting up is a no-no, like have you seen Scooby-Doo? They always split up and nothing good ever happens, well of course they catch the "monster" or in our case the human, or humans. No matter who my partner will be, I'm the Scooby-Doo of this clique, scared and always hungry.
"So who's with who?" I asked, my eyes jumping from Theo to Adam to Dawn.
Theo nodded slightly with a sigh. "Okay. Just stay safe, or at least as safe as you can. If you find anything even slightly suspicious, send up a flare or start talking to shadows. I'm sure Dawn will slip away from me soon enough and find ya."
Adam nodded slightly, still playing with the bracelet. "Will do. And please don't start resurrecting people if you find any dead, Theo. You know that shit drains you, it can wait."
I looked at Adam as he suggested to go with me, I just nodded to myself. I wonder what his angelic side has something against Dawn, aren't they like best friends? Dawn went over to stand with Theo and I did the same, walking over to Adam.
"So we are just going to find the human? What do we do if we find him or her?" I asked out to the group, not sure if any certain person in this room would know.
The group nodded, but Theo continued. "Whatever you do, do not kill. And yes, I'm looking at you, Dawn. Killing means potential of more humans noticing us, that means war, and war means we all become circus acts or lab rats, and I will not be the scientific plaything for a human ever again. Is that all clear?"
I nodded slightly Theo's little speech to Dawn. It is going to be weird "catching" something I'm so fond of, but I guess I'd have to get used to it. I looked at Adam who hovered over me with his height.
"So, should we begin?" I ask him, hopefully he knew what he was doing, because this is going to be the most interesting thing I've done, maybe if I need to get used to this, I'll nickname it "Catch-A-Human" or something, so it could be an inside joke.
"I think maybe we should head towards the living quarters of town, just to make sure everyone's inside and safe. Besides, if anyone is out and about, maybe we can convince them to help us with this human tracking." The fingers on his bracelet hand always seemed to clench whenever the word "human" was mentioned, and he didn't say it with a loving connotation. He kept reaching up to touch his scar, as if its presence was enough to make him angry.
I could hear the anger in Adam's voice as he spit the word "human" out, but I just agreed and followed him, glancing back at Theo and Dawn a few times over my shoulder.
"So..." I said, walking awkwardly beside Adam, it seems like everyone I've met in this town has a thing against humans, but there has to be a reason why of course.
"When did you start playing music?" I asked, trying to start a conversation.
"Theo gave me my first real guitar when I was...seven, I think? Before that, I just hand one of those cruddy training guitars for kids that I never could seem to tune quite right. But anyway, I was in the hospital because I'd been having a bunch of trouble with my diabetes, yadda yadda, and he just walks in, carrying the most gorgeous blue vintage Telecaster I've ever seen. I still play her, Lucille is hands down my favorite instrument of all time. Fell in love the second he set her in my hands, and I've never stopped playing, nor do I ever plan on stopping."
I stared at Adam in awe, you could really see that he liked music.
"That's very sweet of Theo." I told him, I felt sorry that he had been in the hospital, but hopefully that little surprise made him forget he was there at least fir a second. I spent many days in the hospital too, my sister has diabetes, and since Alfonso and his wife had to work full time, I spent my afternoons with Olivia in the hospital.
I saw the city coming closer to us, but as close as it looked it was at least a twenty-minute walk.
