Description
Appearance: Unusually tall (like all the gods) with skin pale as a corpse's a result of spending countless eons away from Helios's light. His hair and beard are as black as ebony. His eyes aren't important as few have the temerity to look into them.
Name: Hades
Gender: Male
Role: As Ruler of the Underworld Hades is the one who decides a mortal's final fate, whether it be to wonder aimlessly for eternity in the Fields of Asphodel as most do, to frolic in constant joy in the Elysian fields, something reserved only for great heroes, and the truly pure of heart , or suffer without end in the depths of Tartars, the torture being particular to the crime of the offender. He also makes certain that those shades that make it to the underworld stay their permanently. He's known for punishing the living if they do not respect the dead or give them their proper funeral rites. Warlords who would think it's funny to leave their vanquished enemies for the wild dogs, while their widows wept foolishly risked provoking Hades. Lesser known is the fact that he's also responsible for the riches beneath the ground, the gold, silver, copper etc. In fact his Roman name Pluto literally means "the rich one."
Abilites/Skills/Powers: Most notoriously he can will death on any living thing, but also restore life...a far more rare occurrence where Hades is concerned. Being a son of Cronus he's incredibly strong even by the gods' standards, just like his brothers Zeus and Poseidon.
Weapons: A helmet which makes it's wearer invisible even to immortals, and a double pronged spear that shatters anything the end of it touches, whether it be a ceramic bowl, or a mountain. Not to be confused with Poseidon's triple pronged earth-quake causing spear. :P
Companions: The court of the Underworld (the other gods that inhabit his realm), his servants such as Menoetius the cattle herder of the Underworld, and Charin the boatman of the river Styx. His Queen Persephone, and now recently Nemesis.
Pets: Cerberus a gigantic three-headed log, with a venomous snake for a tail, he's real sweat and affectionate...towards Hades.
Personality: Calculating, aloof, an unyielding will, with a not so subtle sadistic streak. However his judgments of the dead are known to be surprisingly just. He is reserved with seemingly infinite patience, but when his anger is finally ignited there are usually catastrophic consequences. As mortals and gods alike are about to find out.
Bio/History/Misc.: Hades was the son of Cronus the Titan king and his wife Rhea, it was foretold that one of Cronus' children would overthrow him, and become the ruler of the heavens. Cronus made the abysmal choice to swallow his children as a precaution. Hades was the first to go, followed by his siblings save for the youngest Zeus. To protect her child, Rhea bundled up a stone instead and gave it to her husband to be swallowed. Zeus was raised by a nymph and grew stronger, until one day he was ready to fight his father. Rhea was given a drug by Gaea to expel the rest of her children from her husbands belly. Cronus had angered Gaea along time ago for not keeping his promise to release her other children the hundred-handed giants, from within her. Rhea spiked Cronus' drink, and he instantly vomited his children. They formed a unified front against Cronus and the Titans defeating them. The whole of creation now belonged to the Olympians. As the oldest one would have expected Hades to take his birth right as successor to his father, but the other two protested that they had fought just as hard. Finally the three brothers decided to draw lots to decide which realm they would claim as their own. Zeus won the heavens he became King of all the gods, Poseidon took the seas, and Hades having drawn the shortest stick, was left with the land of the dead. This made him somewhat bitter and harsh, he's not popular even amongst the gods.
Missing the surface world and longing for a ray of light to brighten the abysmal darkness he calls home, Hades couldn't help but to be smitten by young Persephone, after getting her father's permission to take her as his bride he didn't even bother talking to Demeter, she had turned down Apollo, Aries, and Hermes after they tried to court her daughter, he knew he didn't stand a chance of gaining the over protective mother's approval. He opened a hole from the underworld and plucked the girl off her feet, much in the same way she had been plunking flowers. While in the Underworld he thought he tricked her into eating 3 pomegranate seeds so that she would be bound to his realm, but when alone he sometimes contemplates that maybe just maybe, she knew what eating food from the Underworld would mean. After finding a queen things were relatively blissful for a time...
Amongst the mortals Hades was the most feared of all the gods, most didn't dare speak his name not wanting to get his attention. While the other gods were made patrons of their cities and they made great temples in their honor, Hades was prayed to sparsely by comparison. His duty which he tended to unwaveringly was one of the most important and yet he was mostly ignored, they preferred to pretend he didn't exist unless they didn't have a choice. Hades would often complain to the other gods, as his grievances became more passionate he made them uncomfortable. He grew more and more impatient with the gods of the heavens. He started resenting his own wife, for admitting at times that she missed her mother. As he grew more intolerant with the Olympians he distanced himself from Persephone. His hidden attraction for Nemesis started to stir his heart once again. Though he was counted amongst the 12 ruling gods of Olympus Zeus conveniently forgot to send Hermes or Iris down to notify him of an assembly. This is when the god finally became enraged beyond reason, he sent out a thick gray fog across the lands that would kill anything that came within it. Persephone's cries only made him angrier at her for not taking his side. He released the restless shades from the underworld so that they may torment the living at will, as well the ghastly creatures that dwell within the underworld, the harpies and the Chimera. Now there's no turning back, Hades is determined to literally turn creation upside down, where he and all those who reside in the underworld get the respect they so justly deserve.
