Ryder Weapons 101

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby Bhu-Bhu on Mon Jun 24, 2013 3:52 pm

Swords- One of the most common Ryder weapons for its durability and ease in accessibility and usage.
Morphology
-Scabbard: Sheath in which sword is placed when not in use.
-Blade: part of sword used for combat
-Hilt- allows for handling of the blade, consists of consecutive parts
-Grip: The "handle" in which the wielder holds. Is made out of wood or metal and covered in shagreen, which can be either untanned leather, shark skin, or ray skin in the case of the japanese katana.
-Pommel: weighted end of the handle, gives counterweight and balance to blade and allows for fluid fighting style.
-Guard or Cross Guard: Prevents slippage of the hand when thrusting
-Ricasso: A blunt area of the blade below the guard, seen mainly on two handed blades as it gave a third hand position used for leverage.
-Sword knot/strap: a tassel, usually decorative that prevented the sword from being lost if dropped.Image

Typology
Single edged swords- (single handed)
Backsword: Easy and cheap to make, a favorite side arm among Ryders who have lost their main weapon in the fray.Image
Cutlass: Common among Ryders who defend the coastal towns of Cree Image
Dao: Developed long ago from a knife Image
Dussack: Very rarely seen out in battle. Used mainly for training. Image
Falchions: Only seen among poorer Ryders since it is cheap to make unlike longer better quality swords. Comes in two versions
-Cleaver:Image
-Cusped: Image
Hunting Sword: Only every really seen and used among the more rugged and lone wolf type of Ryders. As its name suggests it is not often used in combat but for hunting and skinning food in the wilderness. Image
Karabela: Used mainly among footed and unicorn mounted Ryders. Image
Shashka: Found to be favored by those from Aquilones, unique for its lack of a guard. Image
(Two handed/ hand and a half)
Dadao- deadly and fast, based of knives like the Dao Image
Butterfly sword(Hudieshuangdoo):Often used in pairs by Ryders with Fairy companions. Image
Hook swords: Some of the most difficult to master but the most badass to use. Can be linked by a chain and swung to increase range. Image
Katana: Unique to Nippon village, exceptionally strong due to the way its madeImage

Double edged sword-(single handed)
Arming sword- Favored for its durability as both an effective weapon and shield. Image
Rapier- Though good for fair duels and prestige this sword is not commonly used out in heavy battles for its poor cutting ability and difficulty of technique to use it. For those who can master it however are unusually quick witted and quick footed. Image
Kaskara- Used frequently by those who traverse the desert portions of Cree Image
Shotel- Unique for its curved blade, it is often called the "Savage". Image
(Two handed)
Long sword: As its name suggests, the Long Sword has a long blade, comes in two forms
-Estoc: A blade with very little cutting ability, made for piercing or shattering mail and armor. Image
-Claymore: These swords have broad heavy blades make these blades unpopular among the physically weak Image
Flamberge: If not used properly, parrying with this sword can send unpleasant vibrations down the wielder's arm's Image

Hammers- While not as common as swords these tools turned weapons are useful and great for doing damage.

Morphology
-Handle: Where the hammer is heald.
-Head:Blunt part used for dealing damage.

Typology
Maul: Surprisingly these have been used as secondary weapons for archers. Image
Bec De Corbin(Crow's Beak): Favored by mounted Ryders for its length. Image
Horseman's Pick: Seen mainly among those with Unicorn Companions Image
Lucerne: A combination of the Bec de Corbin and the Horseman's pick Image

Axes: Originating from the more densely wooded areas of Cree, the axe contends with the sword as one of the most commonly used weapons for its simpleness in make and availability.
Morphology
-Head: Blade of the axe, which contains several parts.
-Bit: Cutting edge of the Head.
-Poll: Opposite end of the Head from the Bit
-Toe: Top edge of Bit
-Heel: Bottom edge of the Bit
-Cheeks: The sides of the Head
-Eye: hole where the Haft is mounted
-Beard: when the Bit extends below the head
-Haft: The handle of the axe, usually made of hardwoods like hickory or ash
-Shoulder: where the Haft mounts into the Head.
-Belly: longest part of the Haft
-Throat: where the Haft curves sharply
-Grip: shortest section of the Haft
-Knob: end of Haft

Halberd: A versatile and cheap to make weapon that has been refined from it's primitive origins, making it a favorite among axe users. Image
Tomahawk: Refined from the original tool for closer combat and the ability to be thrown. Such an ability has also been turned into a sport for the average citizen to watch. Image

[b]Pole Weapons and Staffs[b]- least used out of all weapons for Ryders but still found useful by some.

Typology

Magic Staff- Wooden staffs are most often used by Mage's for their ability to conduct magic efficiently and versatility as a physical weapon. Can come it many forms depending on the Mage's choosing. Image Sometimes Mage's will place crystals that they enchant on one end as a place for the magic to charge into a concentrated blast.

Pole Weapons-
Guan Doa-Coming from a form of martial arts designed to deflect as disarm an opponent, the blade is heavy enough that when combined with enough momentum it can cut almost any type of armor. Image Can also have two blades, one on each end. Image
Nagamaki: Another weapon unique to Nippon Village, its elongated handle is held with two hands and the blade is very similar to that of a Katana.Image
Sovnya- Originally from Aniquilous and favoured by mounted Ryders. Image
Corseque: Favored for use in hoards of charging minions since its three pronged head can take out multiple enemies at once

(If anyone has suggestions please comment, there will be more added later. Also take some things said about the weapons with a grain of salt, I have taken some creative liberties with some of the weapns.)
