Buccaneering on the Inner Sea

Buccaneering on the Inner Sea

0 INK

Set in the Inner Sea, a setting published by Paizo, we are a crew of seafaring smugglers looking to make a buck.

1,090 readers have visited Buccaneering on the Inner Sea since mercrutio created it.

Introduction

The year is 4711 AR, nearly five thousand years after the ascension of the Aroden, the Last Azlanti, to godhood. The setting is that of the Inner Sea, a body of water between Avistan, Casmaron, and Garund. See the Inner Sea World Guide for more information, or ask me about any specifics that you need to know.

We are a small group of smugglers who recently formed when our Captain Theodric Mastaf, once a Taldan noble, was cast out and used the last of his fortune to buy a keelboat, the Grey Lady. We will be starting out in media res as a smuggling deal involving the sale of an exotic, and illegal, flower used in the creation of a highly addictive substance known as Pesh.

As for creating a character in this setting, refer to the Inner Sea World Guide, and, if you don't have it, use the following guidelines:

Humans (extremely varied):
Cheliaxian - Imagine the British Empire in decline. They are a proud people, but their country is falling apart.
Keleshite - Keleshites come from the East and have expanded into the easternmost reaches of the Inner Sea region. Similar to Arabic peoples.
Mwangi - Much darker skinned than most of the Inner Sea, the Mwangi come from the south. They are much like central and southern Africans from several hundred years ago.
Shoanti - Organized in tribes, the Shoanti are a proud, but backwards people.
Taldans -The product of the mix between the Avistani and the Keleshites, the Taldans are known for being accomplished scholars and artisans.
Ulfen - Once pillagers, the Ulfen are considered to be strong, brutish, and stupid. They have a high rate of Lycanthropy.
Varisians - The Varisians are wanderers and nomads, typically found north of the Inner Sea in Varisia.
Vudrani - The Vudrani come from Vudra, far beyond the borders of the Inner Sea. They seek enlightenment, but rarely reach beyond their station.

There are more human races, let me know if you want more options or have an idea - I can tell you if it will fit.

Dwarves: Dwarves are miners and crafters, and are fierce combatants. They usually come from the northern, mountainous regions.
Elves: Elves were contemporaries with the ancient Azlant, an extinct race of humans. They disappeared from Golarion for several thousand years, but eventually returned.
Gnomes: Gnomes are a 'wounded' race from a parallel world known as the First World. Gnomes are usually thrill seekers, as they are bored of the firm grasp reality has on our realm, as opposed to the First World.
Halflings: With their small stature, Halflings often go unnoticed in the Inner Sea. They have a keen eye for opportunity.
Half-Elves: Half-Elves, being a kind of "in-between", don't really fit in anywhere. They are very adaptable, and work hard to survive.
Half-Orcs: While many Orc tribes value them for their cunning, the Half-Orcs are often met with hatred and derision.

Other Races: I was asked about other races in a PM. Some other races are acceptable, if they are an exceptional member of their race. Feel free to make requests via PM, as I can't respond there I will post my responses here.
Goblin: Goblins are "inane and destructive". A goblin PC would have to have an explanation as to why these traits were bred out of it.

Toggle Rules

1. This will be freeform - even though the setting is by Paizo, we won't be using any of their campaigns or the Pathfinder RPG rules.

2. Adult themes are very welcome, but let's keep it within reason for these forums.

3. Everyone will be expected to fill out a Character Skeleton (CS) with the following information. Feel free to provide anything else you feel is appropriate for your character.

Name:
Gender:
Race: Character's race, from the core races in Pathfinder. (Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, Halfling, Human (Humans need a specific race, I can provide these on request))
Class: Pick a class from Pathfinder, although you don't have to follow it very exactly at all - it's just to get a feel for your character. (Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, Wizard, Alchemist, Cavalier, Inquisitor, Oracle, Summoner, Witch, Ninja, Samurai, Gunslinger, Magus)
Appearance: A few sentences will suffice.
Background: As much as you are willing to give the group, although I'd like a couple of paragraphs either here or via PM if you want to keep your character's history hidden.
Personality: Your character's general disposition. Don't purposefully detract from the group.
Weapons/Gear: A list of the more important things your character has on them.

4. There is a three strike system. Inappropriate behavior will result in a strike. Two strikes is a 3-day suspension, three strikes and you are out of the game.

5. "Swashbucklers!" Please write that word somewhere in your character submission so that I know you read these rules.

6. One post per day of at least 3 paragraphs. A paragraph is 4-5 sentences.

7. Have fun!

The night was dark. It must be five or six hours until dawn. We were ten miles downriver of Katheer on the beach, and a deal was going down. The Lady was chock full of the goods - a rare flower in Qadira (a nation, the capital of which is Katheer), used for the creation of a potent drug, called Jupesh, which is popular these days in the Inner Sea. The recipe was kept extremely secret by the Keleshites of Qadira; all that was known of the components was salt and the flower, Matmuria.

As he talked to the man with the little mark on his brow, the captain began to think of home. The smuggler was obviously Vudrani, which reminded Mastaf of just how far away he really was. Back in Taldor, there weren't any people like this, so exotic, so different. They'd be considered too "impure" and "low-class" to be in the Taldan presence. How narrow minded a world he had left - sometimes he wasn't sure if he missed it at all.

The man finished what seemed to be a prepared speech, and Theodric nodded. Secure in his position as captain, he sauntered over to his crew; not one to leave them out of the decision making process, he explained the situation to them, "Well men, we have a choice. The nice man over there," he said, pointing to the leader of the other smuggling crew, "will either pay us in full for the flower, or double its worth in Jupesh. I'm for the Jupesh, but it means we won't turn a profit until we can offload it again in Osirion or Absalom, at best. What say you?"

Early, maybe too early for Erin. She sulked for a moment, listening as she was supposed to do before thinking about this. She crossed her arms almost above her chest and her eyes flickered for a short moment. Profiting was all she cared about, though basically, Erin Kwimzy was only in this with the other's because she hated the life before her life as she liked to call it. Her childhood, basically. The Taldan tipped her chin down, her sun kissed skin being buried in the mass of purple curls. She nodded, thought some more.

Erin took a liking to her new found family in a sort of way most female's like her wouldn't. She enjoyed the gruff and the grime and all, so she leaned in a little closer to hear. She leaned up on her tip toes, since she was rather short compared to a few others in front of her and she nodded. More gold the better, profits. She didn't say anything for a long while as everyone around her began to squirm and mumble things. Kwimzy, as she called herself rather than Erin shrugged. The only problem with this idea was the offloading. It took much strength and it'd take a longer time to offload it than it would to ship it. Kwimzy said not a word though, only huffed. She wasn't in it for heavy lifting, as she recalled, though they where just flowers, the high price might send more smugglers and such at their ship.

Keikatz groaned as she heard the captain's voice, her wits returning from gazing over the shore. Eying her fellow crewmates as their captain proposed their...proposition, she couldn't help but roll her eyes. Not that she didn't enjoy more cash...but it was definitely conditional. Since she was hired by the captain, Theodric, she had been skeptic that an elf could efficently run a ship. Honestly, she wasn't reassured. The captain needed to be strong and decisive for his crew. Although, giving her a voice of oppinion gained him some sort of personality bonus. She shook her head, finally coming forth with her surprisingly smooth voice. "I suppose. Not like we're going to be able to buy anything while we're on the ship, huh?" She said, crossing her arms and grinning. The little goblin was just in a hurry to start to sail.

"Just whatever gets us on the water faster, huh?" She finally said, raising a eyebrow harshly.

Valiant looked to his new found captain a little surprised about his long posture and guessed age, but the man seemed able and experienced enough to lead a ship of this size and crew count. Valiant also had his eye's looking to the golden key that properly was some sort of relic. He answered to the question "Well I prefer more money in the end not in the beginning and a trip to Orsirion would give me a change to improve my bone shatter so I choose to get more gold later." He looked around to his fellow crew members not really impressed he didn't spot a real wizard in them mostly sword swingers. He wasn't totally sure if smuggling was a good carrier to choose for a wizard of his education, but he would earn his share so it was worth the risk.

Erin put her shoulder against the side of her face. She sighed thickly. Her curls falling around her tan face, her eyes flickered. True, she wanted to sail and she wanted to sail sooner rather than later. It was more interesting, anyways. She sighed once more, her arms folding a little tighter, she went totally dull and gazed out at the open shore. It was just waiting to be ridden. Kwimzy huffed.

"I just want to go sail some more." She frowned, such a childish thing to say. Though Erin seemed this way, she just didn't like serious talk. She'd rather play Pirate Poker or just regular games with the pawns and/or tokens. Games where what Erin loved most. Erin Kwimzy was a playful, spunky young Taldan. The only difference was that she was attracted to metals, making things, and fighting over all. Kwimzy was such an odd child.

Valiant looked to the girl and he only now know that she was at right side of him and she had purple hair. Valiant sighed thinking of how his master would give him a stupid lesson of how to stay alert or maybe a concentration test. He looked back to his new captain but he kept working in his brains, he would need someone to work with and a wizard that would be useless in a one to one close combat fight with a iron swinger. He would need someone to help him than he could win from many enemy's. He should talk to one of these idiots and make them help him maybe he could find someone that could be a friend that would be his first. He said to the what he would see as a girl "So why did you join smugglers you look like someone that could have a better or safer job." He could see she could do something better,he got it from many things but the hair was his clearest clue a dull peasant would never want to stand out and she seemed smart in some way.

Erin's eyes flickered for a moment before she heard a voice from beside her. She looked over, frowning a little. Safer job... Pish. Erin rolled her shoulders, having to remind herself not to snap at this guy. She folded her arms a little tighter on her chest and huffed. "I don't like regular jobs. They're too safe and boring, are they not?" She asked thickly, her voice low and some what annoyed that someone would ask her that. Kwimzy absolutely despised the fact that almost all other people where surprised that she had a job like this one. Kwimzy loved it, apparently no one could tell how much she liked it. How much she liked making things with wood and swinging swords and planning and such. It was exciting.

Valiant said trying to be nice but failing in the tone "Well I agree in that fact but I do this work for the higher income. I have a passion for gold and other valuables. Valiant gold eye is my name nice to meet you." He looked to her observing her movements reading her state of mind she was annoyed obvious a hot headed one but he still needed someone to cover his back. Maybe disguising work would help "I think more gold in the end is better and a trip to fare lands sound good to me don't you agree too." He half hoped that he had chosen the good words he was not experienced in talking to the human female gender.

Kwimzy blinked, frowning some more. Her head cocked to the side and she shrugged slowly. There was a piece of wood that caught her attention and she blinked at it, smiling slightly. It was shaped like a sword. Interesting. She turned her gaze back to Valiant and dipped her head a little. "I suppose. I like the trips more than the money. Excitement is what I wanted when I found this ship." She said, her tan skin rolling a little with her shoulders. Broadly, she smiled at the wood. It was interesting her more than what the guy beside her was. She reached out for it and grabbed it. She held it on her hip, switching out a small blade from her other hip and her belt she began slicing at the wood. It was only driftwood, anyways.

The goblin looked at each of the other peoples she was standing with, her tail swishing back and forth. She brushed the blonde locks out of her eyes with a rather irritated sounding sigh, before her voice came forward again. "Might I ask where the cookies are for this teaparty? Because to me, this is what this little gathering looks like." She said, pinching her eyebrows. Keikatz was rather frustrated at this point.... " Listen: I didn't come here to exchange pleasantries. I could have done that, and much more down at the tavern. Why, pray tell me, you two, are we still standing here? Or better yet - tell me why on earth we're still here longer than ten minutes?!" She said, tapping her foot. The goblin stood much shorter than the other two present, but by damned hell if she was going to be ignored. There were going to be losses of kneecaps before that happened.

Erin's attitude towards others was reasonable considering she was human but for hear other creatures to cope, she found, was tricky finding a balance to. Kwimzy frowned and her eyes went some sort of gentle on te female gobbling in front of we before she shifted, still carving the drift wood out. Her movement was a simple shrug. She didn't use her words until a moment after finishing her wooden sword. "How am I to know? I am no captain and if you want toconplain, complain to him. Oh and excuse me for saying that." she said with an ignorant twinge in her voice. This grouchy creature began to annoy her. It had given her quite the attitude so she simply gave it back with a tit of mockery.

Valiant looked at the female goblin with big surprised eyes of seeing a civilized goblin talking and fully on intelligence. He had no problem on races but a goblin was something else and one that seemed to prefer fighting. "Well...." He regained a bit of arrogance "Well because we can't have action all the time, we are smugglers no army or pirates." He looked to the goblin with a little bit of admiring, he always assumed goblins had too under evolved brains or maybe a too small skull to reach a normal intelligence but still here stood one. He remembered him self to write this down, some guys could pay him for the knowledge that goblins could be fully trained most people never guessed it. He didn't think about anything for a moment but guessing how she could have a education. He then gave the wooden sword a look he almost gave a comment that it was as useful as a weapon as a rock or even less. He said in a time of not thinking about what he said"I don't think that he has time for one of his crew members." He looked back at the goblin "Valiant is my name." He already began reading a spell just in case for a.... unsuspected move. Valiant had only one time in his live met a pretty smart goblin and that one tried to murder him so he was on his guard for a short fuse.

Erin gave Valiant a look. It was one of those full of temper looks where the pupils where locked on one's face and it sent shivers down some people's spines. Erin blinked away from Valiant after a long moment and turned around her sword. The wooden sword seemed too unnatural and obviously nothing she wanted to keep. With the small knife of her's, she continued carving until it was the size of a tooth pick, the scraps she shoveled out of sight. Erin flipped some of her hair back, frowning. She set the tooth pick bit in with the pile. It wasn't worth keeping, anyways. Erin leaned back on her heels. She blinked at the goblin again. She liked being on the ship, around all the different creatures and people. It gave her something interesting to do, anyways. Deep within her mind she thought about how boring it was some times, though. Erin didn't say another word, though and sighed thickly. What fun.

The female goblin only groaned as the woman gave her answer, and it didn't do much for her rather rising temper. She wasn't in a good mood to start with, and answering her with stupid and pointless statements like that did not help her anger issues. She was battling with her willpower right now not to snap, and call the woman an entire swarth of bad and foul names, as was in her instinct. However, the saving grace was that she was accompanied by a man, whom didn't seem to look down on her as the woman did. He just kind of was stuck-up. That was okay; arrogance seemed to be the only way that the dwarves and elves knew. So it wasn't like Keikatz was completely new to this personality trait. In fact, it was fair to say she was quite used to it.

This man held her at arm's distance, a wise man if there was one. Although, since she had the decency not to whip her blades out, she might of thought that he was smart enough to tell she wasn't going to maim him. Yet. The goblin was fighting her true nature, of 'smash maim kill'. However, what kept her in line was the fact that she had remembered what a barbaric life she had lived, and what little meaning it meant to her now. She'd not return to a simple life of...naturalism. He introduced himself, and then began to read...something...She raised an eyebrow. "Keep your magic letters in your book for now, fireball-flinger. There ain't no use for 'em out here." She said rather irrtatedly. Magic was something that only through shamanism, had her race grasped. "I'm Keikatzeliandra." She said, the rather mouthful of a name sounding...odd to the human ears. "Call me Kei, or Keikatz."

Valiant stopped the spell in a quick move "Keikatzeliandra what a interesting name, andra zeli and Keikat rolled up in one is it a gathering of second names of families and your first name in front?" He could speak many languages around the Inner sea including the tone and many goblin signs that they gave other goblins for communication so it came quoit right out of his mouth he tanked his master for pounding all these languishes in his mind wile he wanted to only learn magics..... well bone shatter more than anything.

Erin blinked, cooling her temper a little before listening. She sat down on the ground, sighing with slight boredom. She, being human and not one to study language's, hadn't a clue what they where talking about. Her eyes scanned the ground and she traced her finger along it, making barely any marks before sighing again. Her tanned skin made much contrast with her hair and she wished she could get along with these creatures but constantly, she failed. She was good willed and good hearted, she just had too much mind of matter issues. Erin was silent as the Keikatz and Valiant talked. She realized she hadn't told them her name yet, or had she? She couldn't even remember. She remained silent, boredom creeping up and readying to attack her at any next moment. More shedding of drift wood might be needed to keep her at ease.

Re: [OOC] Buccaneering on the Inner Sea

Alright, I think we may pick up a few more players in the near future, but for now it'll be the three of us. I'll put up the first post sometime tomorrow, it should be up before too late. Feel free to respond at any time after that post is up!

Re: [OOC] Buccaneering on the Inner Sea

I'm planning on starting wednesday, but I'd like at least four characters. I will put mine up soon, which leaves at least one more person.

Can't wait to get started, I hope everyone has a good time!

Re: [OOC] Buccaneering on the Inner Sea

Sorry! I opened another page and forgot to change that up. Thanks for the welcome. This rp sounds cool. Glad to be in it.

Re: [OOC] Buccaneering on the Inner Sea

and when do we start posting? Is there a rate of people or a time?

Re: [OOC] Buccaneering on the Inner Sea

hm I am still busy reading the magician part I had not come by the nations so honestly I didn't know it, this world is new to me sow I need to work it through but I will managed it.

Re: [OOC] Buccaneering on the Inner Sea

Yeah, Deevious, feel free to write one up, we're definitely still accepting.

Also, for Thorait, the country is called Cheliax. Don't worry about your grammar being perfect, as long as we can understand your meaning I'm happy. It's interesting you chose to be in a Chelaxian orphanage - they're infamous for mindwashing and bringing children to diabolism.

Re: [OOC] Buccaneering on the Inner Sea

Am interested, will try and make up a CS as soon as I can. :)

[OOC] Buccaneering on the Inner Sea

Alright, I'm new here, but I'm excited to see what your site has to offer! I can't PM as of yet, too low on posts, so please check this thread often for messages.

Corpse of Ruin, welcome to the game! Just one note on an otherwise great CS: The race is Taldan, not Talidan. Thanks for signing up so quick, I hope you like it!
