Despite her rather unremarkable appearance, Lyra is not human, but fae. Normally, the fae are characterized by otherworldly beauty, but you see, it's a rather large category. In fact, Lyra is actually a banshee, which technically classifies her as a shape shifter. Being a banshee, there is much that Lyra is privy to that the normal eye cannot see. As such, her eyes are a crystal clear blue, the same shade one might find in a looking glass. Her hair is vibrant crimson red, her skin being pale white. On her nose are a light dotting of freckles that are almost invisible unless you're standing toe to toe. Her limbs are long and slender, almost regal, her body being slim except for the chest. Her chest is boisterous and while not flat, is very much present.

Lyra's sense of style is a bit more masculine then one might think. She prefers tight garments that are easy to move in, but nothing that will show off too much of her body. Some might think that Lyra is a prude, but she merely has a work ethic that she sticks by. Beside her, in its scabbard, is her trusty sword, which she amost never parts with.

When every one of them is giving up or giving in, tell me

Nothing ever comes without a consequence or cost, tell me
Will the stars align?
Will heaven step in? Will it save us from our sin? Will it?
'Cause this house of mine stands strong
That's the price you pay
Leave behind your heartache, cast away
Just another product of today
Rather be the hunter than the prey
And you're standing on the edge, face up 'cause you're a

You gotta be so cold

{☛ ⒽⒾⓈⓉⓄⓇⓎ ☚}
Lyra was orphaned at birth. As the story went, her parents left her on the doorstep of the faerie orphanage, unable to care for her. Lyra did not have a sad life though, being a baby she was quickly adopted. Her parents, two women, insisted on raising her to be a strong and fierce individual. They called her Lyra, after the solar system, knowing that she would be strong willed. They were elves, living in the center of the bustling faerie city. Wren was a seer, who worked alongside the King. He compensate them well, while Florence was a Seamstress for the faerie Queen and Princess. They did not know poverty, they did not know hardship and Wren was thankful for it. She was a well-balanced child, possessing many friends as she was of the talkative sort.

Her first vision happened in the park. Lyra watched her best friend drown in the river. She stopped her from chasing after their ball, insisting that they would just get a new one. That was the night Lyra began to see her own death. She quit school, fearing that she would see the deaths of others. Lyra could no longer look at her Mothers' faces, for every time she gazed upon a face, she would see their death. Fearing for their daughter, they brought her before the King and Queen, begging them to help her. Lyra hadn't eaten or slept in weeks, she lived in a constant state of fear, ever since the day of her 10th birthday. The King knew what she was instantly and ordered a knight to teach Lyra self defense. His name was Levi, an expert swordsman. Lyra spent everyday, from after school until nightfall, training with him. He pounded sword drills into her, making Lyra too exhausted to dream. She slept and ate again, she went back to normal. Until the day she saw Levi's death.

It was unavoidable, but Lyra had been warned by the Queen that she could not reveal other's deaths. Doing so would mess up the flow of ether. After Levi's death, the merge of the two Kingdoms had begun. Lyra left home, seeking out someone wise who could teach her to manipulate the ether she saw. Her teacher lived in the human world, but after three years of training, had disappeared. Lyra had not seen her death, she knew that out there, somewhere, she was still alive and well. So Lyra joined a guild, hoping to both earn money to make her way back home and to find her missing teacher.

White healer's robes were white like that for a reason. It was so that you'd be easy to spot by your teammates so if they needed help they would know what direction to run to. Nieve was happy in her healer's robes, it was like a uniform. "That's right." She whispered to herself after washing her face. "You can use your talents for good." She wouldn't have to kill people anymore. Her parents wanted her to be a dreadful assassin in the night, but she didn't want that life. Elren saved her, and now she was here. Pheenie looked beautiful in her white tunic and warrior's mask. Due to her skill with a sword, Sopheene was sometimes called the Sword Saint. With her white tunic, she really did strike a divine sort of image. Allen had a sacred bow that could shoot elemental arrows, and he wore simple archer's garb with an arm bracer to help his grip.

Tymol and Lyra were already waiting and ready for them. Lyra was a strong girl, perhaps she could even match with the Sword Saint. Meanwhile Tymol wasn't the best fighter but no one could get in or out of a place better than he could. "There you all are. We were waiting!" He grinned, lazily leaning against a tree. Allen waved his hand in greeting. "It's a good day for a mission. The Tower's that way, so we should get moving." Sopheene nodded shyly. She didn't put her mask on yet, but she would once they got closer. She was very timid, but with the mask on it was like she became a different person. "Thanks again for the Anyxria." Nieve gave a polite bow, never one to forget her noble manners. "I have all sorts of tinctures and salves for us just in case things get strenuous." Her bag rattled with glass bottles and ointments.

Nieve always liked to listen to people's footfalls as they walked. It was a weird habit of hers. Tymol had small short steps that made no sound, as if he was permanently creeping about, trying not to be heard. Allen's steps were lively and had good stride, he knew how to move around quickly and deftly. Pheenie was a bit heavy in her steps, and she always hesitated a bit before putting her foot down. A quiet girl that had good firm footing in a fight. Nieve's steps were slow and deliberate, but with the poise a noble lady would have. She still hadn't fully shed her Magnolia mannerisms yet. Lyra's footsteps felt almost floaty, as if she could fly away at any second.

As they drew closer, Tymol ran ahead to scout. When he returned, he had news. "The dragon is awake. The door to the tower's locked, but if I can get close enough, I can pick it open for us." He snickered with youthful pride. "Just like the legends say, the dragon's left eye looks scarred." Allen nodded. "Then I'll aim my arrows for the other eye so we can blind it." A blind dragon was a lot easier to handle than one that could see, albeit only with half of it's vision. Nieve rummaged in her back, retrieving a bottle. "Everyone have a sip." She said, taking a sip of the bitter green liquid. "It'll help your skin not burn if you get hit by fire." Pheenie blushed nervously as she put the mask on but once her face was covered she looked ready. "I'll be at the front. I'm the strongest of us." She said firmly, voice strong and alluring for Nieve. Just watching Pheenie drink her potion made her feel a little warm inside.

The others arrived shortly after. Lyra was impressed with their timeliness. She expected nothing less from their guild, the Lamia Scale. They were often spoken highly of, which was why Lyra had chosen to join them. "Let's get going," she motioned for them to follow her, knowing the path to the woods by heart. No doubt they all were aware of the best way to get to the enchanted forest by now, considering most of their quests took place in there. Lyra brushed her fingers through her fiery hair and adjusted her jacket. Her boots tread lightly, barely making a sound against the foliage. Nieve fell into step beside her, thanking Lyra for the potion. "Don't mention it, think of it as payment for coming with me today." They were growing closer now, Tymol ran forward to scout ahead, disappearing into the brush.

"We're nearly there," Lyra's heart palpitated with excitement. Tymol returned, informing them of the dragon's wakefulness. Lyra nodded, having planned for such a thing. Nieve was prepared, pulling out a potion that would help them against the flames the dragon might spit. "Thank you Nieve," Lyra took a sip. It made her insides feel strangely warm, but the banshee would not complain. They turned to face their opponent, the dragon sniffing the air cautiously. "It knows we're here," Lyra bit down on her lip and unsheathed her sword, the metal glinting in the sun. She used its reflection to distract the dragon, hoping that Allen took the chance to shoot, its good eye now in their direct line of sight.

The dragon released a huff of breath, smoke filtering from its nostrils. "If we all attack from different directions, it will be easier for Tymol to sneak over and unlock the door." Lyra was no strategist, but once Allen knocked out the dragon's good eye, they could attack from all sides and sneak into the tower after Tymol unlocked it. "On three," Lyra would give the signal. "One... two... three!" She lowered her hand, watching an arrow fly. The dragon roared, the ground shaking around them as the arrow blinded him. "Now!" Lyra rushed out from the bush, watching as Tymol sped ahead to unlock the door. Lyra lifted her sword, striking at the dragon's leathery leg.

It kicked out, the banshee narrowly dodging getting hit by a dragon leg. She slashed at its tail, the dragon letting out another roar. Her sword did nothing but bounce off of its thick hide. "It's open!" Tymol called, beckoning to all of them. Lyra dodged another dragon leg and slid underneath, coming up on the other side and to where Tymol was waving frantically at them. "This way!" Lyra called to them, the dragon frantically stomping away from the door.

If they played their cards right, they wouldn't have to kill the dragon. They could hurt it, but hopefully, hopefully they wouldn't have to kill it. Dragons were already a rare enough existence in this world. If there was a way to save it and let it live, Nieve wanted to take it. It would be more dangerous, but the members of Lamia Scale weren't afraid of a little danger. "Keep moving forward." Nieve whispered to herself. She had to motivate herself to keep going. Tymol had returned with the report. If Allen could land his arrow, the dragon wouldn't truly be able to defend itself. It was their best plan. Lyra started the encounter, using the light from her sword to distract the dragon, allowing Allen to land the arrow, right in the eye. The dragon let out a howl of pain as Tymol rushed past, diving under the dragon's limbs to reach the door to the glass tower.

As the dragon was blinded, Lyra and Sopheene rushed forward, the two swordswomen of the guild. Lyra attacked swiftly and Sopheene was quick and agile as she tried to stab at the weak points in the scales, digging her sword in between each scale in her attack. She looked so pretty, a white blur of power, Nieve could stare at her for days. Allen grinned as he knocked an arrow. "I'm glad you have the bracer to make your arm stronger." Nieve said, distracting herself from the starry look in her eyes. "Bracer? No, it's an arm guard." He laughed, ruffling her hair as he fired another arrow, bursting with ice magic, right into the dragon's mouth to freeze the flames it was about to spout. "Hurry and get in!" Tymol yelled from inside, the door was open and ready.

Allen picked Nieve up in one hand. Sylphs were incredibly light after all, even Allen was barely sixty pounds. Wind spirits like them were dainty, but even so, they could be strong if they wanted to be. Sopheene remained in the back, pushing Lyra through the door. She was tallest so it was her job to keep everyone safe. The dragon let out a cry, swinging it's tail as Allen and Nieve made it through. "Back up!" Pheenie cried, her sword bursting with flames as she slid it across the ground, creating a wall of fire to block the dragon off from trying to get closer. She shut the door behind her, their party now inside the Glass Tower itself. "Is anyone hurt? I have ointments!" Nieve rummaged through her bag, reaching for the ointments to treat wounds. "I'm okay. Lyra looks unharmed too." Sopheene said, putting her sword in it's sheath.

Putting her ointments away, Nieve was glad that no one was harmed. Tymol groaned as he looked up. "That's a long climb. It's just a big spiral staircase?" They had no choice but to start the climb. By the end of it Nieve's legs were aching so Allen was carrying her again. "Sheesh, you need to work on your strength." He poked her in the cheek. "I don't need to be strong, I just have to keep studying medicine so I don't lose my edge!" Working out was a waste of time when you could be reading instead.

At the top of the Glass Tower, they saw a ver strange right. "Enemy!" Tymol shouted, drawing his sword sword. He stood in the back, but ready to strike just in case this strange horned feminine monster attacked. "It looks feral." Sopheene muttered, flaming sword in hand. "We can make quick work of this." Nieve and Allen exchanged a look. "Wait, isn't that..." Allen held his hand out in sudden alarm. "Wait! There were rumors of an illegitimate child with a hideous horn... just like her. And she has some of the Fae King's facial features...." Allen's eyes went wide. "Don't kill her! This might be the..." It was incredible. Wasn't it just some baseless rumor? "I'm the smallest, so I'll do it." She pulled out her bottle of Anyxria extract. Her favorie anasthetic and she would have to use it up again.

"Sshhh, shh, it'll be okay." Allen watched her in panic, ready to grab her just in case. He always had been protective. "Just drink this. It's yummy, I promise." She added extra Shio leaves into the extract so make it smell sweet. One gulp and the girl would be knocked right to sleep. "Here, drink up." She took another slow step, smiling the entire time to hopefully show that she was not a threat.

The tower shook, dust raining from the rafters. San rose, grasping one of the banisters and shimmying up it to look outside. The dragon was roaring, his tail thumping, but why? He rarely got angry, not like this. San had once seen him roar when one of the flying things had pecked him in the eye. "Rooooar!" She imitated with a giggle, shimmying back down to the ground. She picked up her book and clambered onto the bed, making a nest out of the blankets and pillows. The monster opened the book back up and tore the page out, looking at the two big people surrounding the little one with their arms. She wrapped her own arms around herself, scratching her back. Was that what they were doing? San wondered. She bit the paper, tearing it up in frustration, she didn't understand!

There was a creaking from outside. San looked up, it wasn't food time. It was different from the normal creaking, she looked around, hearing voices. The monster stiffened, uncertain what was happening. The door opened slowly, a thing shouting. It was loud, why was he so loud? San growled, backing up on top of her bed, but there was a wall behind them and a door where they were. Something caught fire, San whimpered, backing up further. What were these? Why were they here? She looked down at the page she had torn from her book, wondering if these were people. They walked on two feet, they spoke strange words. "Wreow?" San asked, attempting to discern if they were friend or foe.

The small one came forward, carrying something. San took a hesitant step forward, then another. She slid off of the bed and crouched on the floor, wondering what it was. The monster sniffed the offered bottle; it smelled nice. Was it food? Was it to be eaten? She took it, sniffing the contents of the bottle. With a clawed hand, she took the bottle, hesitantly taking a sip. It was good, San decided, licking her lips. She drank the rest of it, feeling suddenly dizzy. San held up the bottle, offering it back to its owner. Her vision blurred, the monster confusedly attempted to take a step forward, her hands giving out underneath her. She slipped, asleep as she hit the floor.

Lyra was eager as the door opened, it was easy, almost too easy. Tymol called to them from the top of the staircase, there was an enemy inside. Of course! They had to fight the final boss! But what was in there was something Lyra had not been prepared for. Pointed ears, the indication of a fairy, but it was no fairy that Lyra had ever seen before. The horns reminded her of a story, a beast that the King and Queen of the Fey had been rumored to be hiding. Was it true then? Lyra wondered, but this beast looked to be no more than a scared and confused child. "Don't hurt it," she placed an arm out as Tymol drew his short sword. Sopheene too, was prepared, her own weapon dripping with flame.

"What should we do with her?" Lyra asked, kneeling down to examine the horns. The child was asleep, clutching a piece of paper in her hand. Lyra pried her claw open, the paper bitten, but still legible. "Family," she whispered, looking at the picture of a mother and father hugging their child.

Nieve approached slowly, carefully. She did not want to startle the girl. The easiest way to take care of this would be to knock her out with the Anyxria extract, sweetened version of course. With effort at last the fae girl decided to trust the smell and drank it, slumping down in mere seconds. Apparently her paper had the words family written on it. "It's too early to know for sure." Allen said cautiously, knowing that this was a serious affair potentially. "But maybe the rumor is true?" Could this be the illegitimate child of the Fairy King? "What's the plan." Sopheene asked, voice gruff. They didn't want to stay here too long, especially if the rumor was true. "You're the leader, Lyra, it's up to you."

Nieve pitied the girl, either way if it was true or not, having her live her life in a Glass Tower seemingly all alone was quite the sad existence. Still, she wasn't at the point to simply want to suggest opening up their home at the Guild for her. Would Adonis even agree, or would he consider this to be a stupid risk? Lamia Scale was doing well so far, but all it would take was one scandal and things could go downhill. "Hey!" Tymol said suddenly. "She's a girl who needs a family! She was abandoned here! Remember, Lamia Scale is a home for anyone who doesn't have one for themselves!" Some members of the guild lived at the Guild Hall. While it did open and close like any business, there were living spaces for those who needed them. Tymol was one of those people. Nieve lived with her brother and sister in law to be in the inner parts of Phosphora.

"Everyone, gather together." While normally Sylphs couldn't do this, two Sylphs working together very much could. Brother and sister joined hands, creating a powerful wind. "We can ride this down. Just keep your hands and feet inside the ride at all times." The wind howled as it blew, transporting the party down from atop the tower. Spheene let out a squeak as her mask fell off and she pocketed it, back to her normal shy adorable self. "You did good today, Sophie." Allen gave her a gallant kiss and Nieve looked away. Pheenie was a better nickname, that was what she believed. "Ew, stop eating face!" Tymol stuck his tongue out at the couple. "We got a girl to give to Adonis!"

It was a few hours walk back to the Guild Hall and Adonis was at the reception desk, waiting for the good news. "Do you want to make the report, Lyra?" Usually it was a team leader that made the mission report to Adonis after each outing so it would be Lyra's responsibility. "It was fun! Let's team up again?" Lyra was still the newest member of the family, but Nieve wanted her to make more friends and become integrated with all of them.

Lyra knelt down to get a closer look at the horns, noting how sharp they were. She rose and looked around at the others in the room. They expected her to make the decision, as to whether or not they should leave the girl here, or take her with them. Lyra looked around, taking in the room. The best had a mess of pillows and blankets, the walls were scribbled with pictures of birds and flowers, things the child could see outside of her glass tower. It was a prison, albeit a nice one. All her life, she had grown up hearing stories of the glass tower in the woods, of the treasure that lay within. It turns out, there was no treasure at all, but merely a child. It must have been lonely, living her alone. Did anyone ever visit? Judging by the dragon at the base, Lyra highly doubted it.

Tymol brought her out of her reverie. She smiled, recalling just what Lamia Scale was all about. "We'll take her with us," Lyra agreed. "No one deserves to be left behind, especially not in a place like this." With the decision made, the two sylphs placed their hands together. Lyra lifted the girl, careful to not have her chest skewered by the horns. "Let's go," upon the gust of wind, they were carried to the outside of the woods. The dragon had curled up to slumber, no doubt having thought his charge to be safe inside. They broke through the roof, landing safely on the ground below. "I have a feeling this isn't the treasure Adonis is expecting," Lyra laughed. It felt nice to be around others, even if she knew one day, she may predict their deaths and be unable to prevent it.

The guild hall was bustling, it was just after noon now. "I suppose I'll do it," she nodded, having been in charge of this quest. Who had made it in the first place? She wondered as she walked forward. "Yes, let's team up again in the future." Lyra smiled as she approached the desk. Lyra placed the girl down atop the paper work, Adonis jumping back in surprise. "What is this?" He asked, his tail swishing wildly. "The treasure inside of the Glass Tower. This girl was inside," Lyra replied, placing her hands on her hips. "This isn't the prize we were promised Adonis," he waved away her and came closer, inspecting the girl.

"She's fae, I can tell that much." Adonis murmured, judging by her pointed ears. Lyra nodded, they had surmised that as well. "The other's think she could be the illegitimate child of the Fairy King." Adonis scratched his white hair, glancing back at the others. "Put her in a room upstairs, I'll take care of this later." He held out a key and Lyra took it, lifting the girl once more. "Nieve, you should come in case she wakes up." The two looked to be around the same age, surely that would be a comfort? Lyra placed the child down on the bed, the room sparse, but it had a window overlooking the river that ran beside the town.

San stirred, feeling something soft underneath her head. She felt disoriented and dizzy, her head dizzy. What was happening? San recalled people and then something tasty and an impromptu nap. She looked around her entire body felt awfully heavy. The room was small, much smaller than her bedroom. It was clear to San that she was no longer at home. Where was this place? San wondered, spotting two people. She recognized them from before, the one that had given her the nice snack and the other that had a sword. San curled up on the bed, whimpering. She did not like this strange place, it was dark and plain. The bed was scratchy and her head throbbed from the snack.

"Wruumo?" San asked timidly, wanting to know where they were. "It's okay," the one with brightly colored hair spoke, holding out a hand. "You're in a safe place," but San didn't understand her, she may as well have been speaking gibberish.

|| The Whole Sky || Kalafina ||

This strange fae girl that no one knew, that could not truly understand the language that they spoke. Hadn't she heard of things like this before? Children raised wrong could end up not knowing the basics in order to survive? Nieve didn't really know but she wondered if it may be too late to teach it at least how to communicate. Fluent control of a language might be hard, but maybe things would be okay even with rudimentary communication. "Sh-she looks, um, peaceful... asleep..." Sopheene tried to say, wringing her hands in anxiety, surprised that she had suddenly spoken. She was watching as Lyra was holding the girl as they returned to the Guild Hall, looking just as beautiful as she always did. "Not really. She looks the same as everyone else."

Adonis looked just as surprised as they were to find a little girl here, for who knows why. This girl was very much a mystery. While she could be the illegitimate child of the Fairy King, the fact remained that that was just a rumor. Who was to say if it was the truth or not? "She's going to be one of us!" Tymol declared, pumping his fist. He was very short, similar in height to both Nieve and the new girl. When compared to tall people like Adonis and Sopheene, the height difference was stark. "She needs a family, and we can provide that for her!" The little thief boy was very much of the opinion to keep her. "It might be dangerous." Allen had a bit more reservation, as did Nieve. "Will we be safe if a scandal comes?" This could also be a link that leads the Magnolia family right to them.

But it wasn't their decision in the end, was it? Nieve nodded, accepting the job. "U-um... I'll - let's go get a-another mission then?" Pheenie suggested to Allen, who nodded. "We'll do something simple then, boss." As the three of them discussed a duo mission for them, Nieve made her way up with the mysterious girl who was placed on a bed where she would rest for now. Suddenly it seemed that she woke up, making another strange noise. What was the best way to help her learn? The toxicologist wasn't the best person to be a teacher, but at the very least she had something of an education. Didn't they say that literacy was the most important aspect of a society to consider it's progress?

Language would have to be the first barrier. Didn't babies always start learning names before going onto anything else. Nieve decided to point to her chest then. "Nieve." She said slowly, locking eyes with the feral girl. "Ni-e-vay." She repeated a bit more clearly. She then pointed to Lyra. "Lyra. Ly-ra." The narrowed her eyes, then forced a sort of smile. "Names." Would the girl understand? She repeated the motions, herself, then the word Name, Lyra, then the word name. Finally Nieve pointed at the girl. "Name?" She asked, wanting to know what to call her.

"I'll admit," Adonis scratched the back of his head, "having this kid here, if she truly is related to the fairy King and Queen, would be a scandal," he grinned a fang grin, his tail swishing back and forth. "But it would also be great publicity for our Guild," Adonis waved away their worries. "Don't worry, right now it's too early to form any theories, but I'll do some digging. If this child is missing her family, we'll be the ones to find them," and if there was a reward attached to it, all the better for their guild. "Nieve, you're around her age. I'm sure you'll be quick friends," Adonis flashed a thumb's up and turned towards Allen and Sopheene, who would go on another quest in the meantime.

What had they done with her? San was on edge, she was fearful. She had thought that the girl who gave her a snack was a friend, was she wrong? The red haired one held out a hand, attempting to communicate, but San did not understand their language. The other one, the short one, held out a hand. "Ni-e-ve?" San sounded out, able to wrap her head around the simple syllables. "Ly-ra," the red head nodded, it seemed that San had gotten a grasp of it. What were those words? The small one repeated them, pointing to herself. Titles? Names! San understood, she nodded and pointed to herself. "San," it was the name she had given herself, the easiest three letters to say. Names, that's what those were called to them. "It looks like she can learn quickly," Lyra said, arms crossed, hip cocked.

"I was right to bring you here, I would have no idea what to do," Lyra shook her head, she would have been quite lost. The little girl seemed less lost, a little bit more trusting and curious. She slid off of the bed and onto all fours, crawling forward. Her dress dragged behind her, well, if that could be called a dress. It was more like a rag that had been wrapped around her. If she truly was a princess, then why had she been locked in a tower? Lyra could take a guess of course starting with the horns. San tilted her head to the side, curious. She sniffed the red haired one and then the blonde one, they smelled nice, San decided. She turned in a circle and sat on her hind quarters, looking up at them expectantly. What next? San wondered. A sound outside drew her attention.

She ran on all fours, jumped onto the bed, and eagerly looked out the window. There was a bird, tapping its beak against the window, chirping happily. San had only ever seen the feathered friends, she had never heard their chirp before. San turned back towards her new friends, Lyra and Nieve, pointing to the bird. "Frruff!" She licked her lips, watching as the bird flew away. Her shoulders sagged, the feathered friends were always leaving her and taking towards the skies. San wished that she too, could fly like them.

As always, Adonis was definitely the kind of man that wasn't afraid of taking a risk if he thought the benefit outweighed the danger. "You've always been a gambling man." Nieve said with a sly smile, fighting the urge to stick her tongue out at him. Not because she was afraid, but it was out of respect. The man took them in, gave them money when they had none, helped them went a home when they had no place to live. He took them in as members of their family. Not long after, they saw him do the same for Lyra. And once again, he was providing a home for this new girl. A provider of homes for those with none, Adonis was building something great here. Nieve just did not want to risk this wonderful place being in danger as a result of his big heart.

Upstairs, Lyra and Nieve were put in charge of the fae girl. More specifically, Lyra was responsible and Nieve was just assisting for now. "We should teach her how to ask things." Nieve said after looked pleased at the progress. San was her name, and she was clever enough to understand what names were. Nieve, Lyra, and San. If they could teach her more words, it would help the girl begin to understand the world. "We'll help her foster curiosity." The Sylph decided, remembering how her Teacher taught her how to use poisons. He would give her plenty of different plants and had her experiment with them, learning with her own hands.

So the poison master gently took San's arm. It felt dainty, just like her own. Sylphs were very physically weak due to the nature of their species. She weighed probably less than twenty pounds due to much of her body being wind and air. There was a reason Allen used a magical bow after all. So she pulled gently until the hand pointed towards the bird that had been chirping. "Bird." Nieve said kindly. Well, to be fair it was called a Blue Wallable, but that was probably too complicated for San right now. She pointed San to a few more things as well, teaching her about doors, about lamps, about clouds.

Was that enough for the girl to understand that with pointing, they would teach her the world? Nieve looked to Lyra then, nudging her forward. "Your turn. Let her point to something, then help her say it, okay?" Little by little they would help the girl contextualize the universe they lived in, one word at a time. "We should teach and encourage curiosity. That's the best way to get someone to learn, you know." She didn't mean to sound like a know-it-all. She just wanted to be useful, that's all.

Lyra nodded, "Clever, it's probably the easiest way we can try to understand each other." The banshee agreed, she was relieved to not be alone with the girl as Lyra had never been especially patient with children. Even if Nieve was one, she was much more mature for her age then say, Tymol. "So," Lyra placed her hands on her hips, watching San tap the window excitedly. "How exactly do we foster curiosity?" The child spoke in gibberish, or at least, in no language that Lyra had heard of. She and her Master had traveled far and wide, it was no dialect that Lyra recognized. She watched carefully, as Lyra would need to learn by example considering this was not her area of expertise. Her Master had always been cautious in guiding her, as the ways of the banshee could be fickle.

San pointed to the animals, listening as the one called Nieve gave her instruction "Birb!" She echoed, licking her lips. San smiled, the winged creatures had a name!
"Birb! Birb, birb!" San pointed to all of them, naming each one. Were they all birb? She wondered, turning back towards Nieve to learn more of their language. San's tail thumped eagerly against the bed, she wiggled with delight, finally having a name to call all of these things. "Door!" San echoed once more, "Cloud! Cloud!" San pointed to each fluffy white chunk, naming them.

It was Lyra's turn to point at things. "Bed," she gestured to the long flat thing San was sitting on. She had always thought of them as nests. "Pillow," ah. The fluffy fluff had a name too! San was eager to learn. "Blanket," and the soft warmy was blanket! San nodded, repeating everything. Her stomach growled loudly, San placed both hands on it, whimpering. She was not used to this sensation, for her entire life, she had received three meals, timed to the tee. "Hunger," Lyra smiled patiently. "Hunger!" San repeated with a nod. "Hunger! Hunger!" San chanted as though it were a song.

San pointed up, wondering if that's where the food came from. "Roof," Lyra turned towards Nieve. "I'll be right back," Lyra disappeared outside. She returned with three plates, loaded to the gills. "I wasn't sure what our new friend might like, so I brought her a little bit of everything." San cautiously left the bed, sniffing the air. "Food," Lyra pointed, naming each thing. San licked her lips, waiting for permission. Chicken, potatoes, green beans, cake.

❝Once upon a time, I fell in love.❞

|| The Whole Sky || Kalafina ||

San was already getting into it, able to mostly form the words they were trying to teach her. That meant to some extent, San had been free to make sounds as she pleased so her tongue and vocal chords were somewhat developed correctly. "Bird." She said again, stressing the d at the end of the word. While yes, birb was very cute, it was important to teach proper pronunciation. Forgiving little mistakes here and there would lead to bigger mistakes which would make it harder for her to be understood. Education was a rare thing in this world, most children started working around twelve to help earn a living at home. It was usually only those from noble families that could afford to learn. Nieve, in that way, was lucky. Lyra wanted to know how to teach curiosity.

"It's best if it's somewhat natural." Nieve explained to Lyra, trying to reiterate what her tutors had taught her back when she was learning under the Magnolia family name. "That way she'll simply want to know and learn more. If she asks a question, it's important that we always respect that and give her an answer that will satisfy her." So she and Lyra would have to teach the rest of the Guild San-language, which for now extended to 'I'm pointing at this so tell me what this means.' "The more of us that can help teach her about the world, the better, wouldn't you say?" San suddenly started up, patting her tummy and saying that she was hungry. They didn't need to be experts to know what that meant.

Lyra returned with a whole lot of food and was happy to teach San exactly what each food was. "We should probably help teach her how to use utensils." Maybe it was a bit silly, but Nieve always appreciated those with good table manners. Many of the guild were messy eaters, even doing something as horrible as picking up whole chicken wings with their own hands. Allen was a neat eater and Sopheene of course was too because Nieve taught her exactly how not to be a troglodyte. Lyra was pretty yes, and San was downright adorable, but Nieve believed that there could be no women as perfect and beautiful as Sopheene herself, the Sword Saint herself.

There were three forks and three knives. If you were careful even chicken wings could be defeated with clever use of fork and knife. The Sylph decided to teach San about proper eating etiquette, since one's class was usually most easily seen by their table manners. "This fork goes with this food, and-..." she sighed, feeling a bit disappointed. "It's probably too early to teach table manners." But if San really was the illegitimate daughter of royalty, there were things like this that she would need to know. She would also need to learn basic ballroom dances, how to court and escort... she sighed, putting a hand on her hip. This was going to be a long road of education, wasn't it?

Lyra shook her head, "I think utensils might be futile right now." The banshee said as she finished naming each food. "Chicken!" San echoed, clapping her hands together. It was cute, Lyra did have to agree on that. She was like a toddler, eager to soak up as much information as possible and repeat it back to them. "Yes, chicken." Lyra took a bite to show San that it was safe to eat. San dug right in, using her teeth to pick meat off of bones and her hands to lift it to her mouth. Lyra had never seen such a messy eater before, at least, not a human one. A dog or horse perhaps, but San was truly animal-like in the way she ate, eagerly gulping down everything in sight. She licked all three plates clean, not picky, it seemed. That was good, Lyra thought, it would make it easy to feed her.

"Good?" Lyra held a thumb's up in question. San looked at her quizically, tail thumping against the ground. Lyra looked up at Nieve, then back at San. Lyra rubbed her tummy, then pointed to the blonde haired monster. "Did San like the food?" San brightened in understanding. "San like chicken!" She agreed, turning in a circle, leaving grease prints on the wooden floor and sitting back down. Lyra picked up the napkin and ran it underneath the sink, San waiting patiently beside the three empty plates. This was the least the banshee could do, she figured, wiping up the grease around San's mouth and cleaning her hands and the floor. San squirmed, an odd sensation. She had never had anyone clean her this way.

"Slowly, we can introduce her to the fork and knife." Lyra agreed, she could practically see the cogs turning in Nieve's head. It was easy to guess what Nieve was, or at least, that she had a background of nobility. It was in the way she dressed and carried herself. She seemed to have a certain air about her, in the way she spoke, in the way she walked. If San truly was nobility, then Nieve would be the best person to learn from. Albeit, Lyra had the feeling that if San ever did she up to court, or whatever it was called, the fae nobility would faint in fear. She was... unusual to look at to say the least. It was clear, however, that San did not realize she was different and that was a blessing. "San, how did you get in that tower?" Lyra knew it was a pointless question, but it irked her.

San purred in response, rubbing her head against Nieve's leg like an affectionate dog or cat. There came a knock on the door, in which San tensed. Going through doors was not something she had experiencing in, considering she had been confined to a single room. Lyra rose, collecting the plates to see who it could be. "Oh, Adonis," the fae entered the room, smiling. "So, our little visitor is awake. I trust you and Nieve are making her at home?" Lyra nodded, handing him the plates. He frowned, "Yes, but she doesn't speak any human or fae tongue and I don't think she quite knows what she is."

With delight, Nieve was pleased to hear San correctly say a complicated word like chicken. What made bird so difficult that she had to resort to birb then? With a less pleased expression, the feral Fae was wolfing the food down with little care for being neat and tidy. There was a reason Nieve always preferred to eat privately in her own room when given a chance. It always costed her her appetite to watch this kind of display. "That's... how uncouth." It couldn't be helped, but it was a shame potential royalty lacked this kind of etiquette. She glanced at Lyra helplessly, having not eaten but would probably not be hungry for a long time now. "Clean. Nieve is cleaning." She explained as she pulled rags out of her pack, sprinkling them with water, and began wiping down the areas where food and juices and stains spilled around San.

The former noble lady took great care in treating the specks and spans of the area so that nothing would strain in the long run. With leftover fragrances of food, insects would take that as an invitation and come and accept that invitation. It probably wouldn't be good for the demon in the long run. "We'll have to potty train her." Nieve told Lyra in dull dreadful realization. "I wonder where and how she used tot ake care of that?" San was a woman of intrigue and mystery. Why was she in the tower? What was her true lineage? There were so many things they would have to find out over time with taking care of her. San's appearance was a bit gruesome, but her behaviors and attitudes and mannerisms were mostly adorable, if unrefined.

Adonis made his entrance then to check up on her. "She's doing well. She knows how to ask qustions by poiinting and expecting to know it's name." Right, to that extent, San would want a name for Adonis now too. "Adonis." The Sylph said, pointing towards the Guildleader. "Adonis is guildmaster." That much might be pushing it a little. They would have to take baby steps. "It's starting to get late." Adonis said kindly to Nieve. "You should go back home with your siblings." It hurt a little to hear Pheenie being called a sibling but there was nothing she could do about that. "Okay. It was nice to meet you, San." She waved goodbye to the girl and then nodded to acknowledge Lyra. "I will see you tomorrow, farewell until then."

Allen and Pheenie were already ready to get heading home. They lived in the inner circles of Phosphora, safe from wandering bands of orcs or trolls trying to cause trouble. "I hope you made friends with that girl. Her situation must be pitiful." Allen shook his head at the thought. "She's blissfully unaware it seems." Nieve said, and she knew that that was a kindness. Pheenie looked adorable as she blushed and tried to say goodbyes as they left the Guild for the day. Tomorrow would be a new day for quests, of course. This peaceful existence... Nieve was thankful for it. She hoped nothing would come to ruin it one day.

San followed Nieve to the door, wondering where she was going. She whimpered as Nieve left and the one called Adonis blocked her path. San did not want them to leave her, she had just made friend, so why was Nieve going? Had San done something wrong? "It's okay," Lyra tried to reassure her, but San didn't understand. "I'm gonna head out too," Lyra said, yawning, the sun had begun to set. San whimpered as she left, the door closing behind her. San turned, growing anxious. This room did not have her toys or books or paints. San continued scratching, wanting to be let out. This room was boring and plain, it was sparsely furnished and had none of the comforts of home. The sun had since gone past the hills, San sat by the window, watching the town illuminate.

The door opened, San perked up, her tail swishing eagerly. "Moof?" She asked, turning in a circle as Adonis entered. "I can't help but hear your yowling," he sighed, "you have no idea what I'm saying, do you?" San sat, her tail thumping happily against the ground. There were scratch marks in the wood from her clawed hands. "Alright, why don't we go on a walk?" Adonis asked, opening the door up further. He began to walk and San, questioningly, scampered out behind him. She pointed to the obstacle in front of them, "stairs." Adonis spoke patiently, helping her down them. San pointed to something else, "table, chairs." She echoed the words back to him, "stairs, table, chair!" San followed Adonis outside, carefully remaining beside him. They were only going on a short walk, he decided, because it would not do for a guild member to wear rags.

He had not meant to buy her so many things. "What is all of this?" Tymol asked, disbelief in his eyes as Adonis returned, armed to the gills. San scampered along after him, wearing a new dress and shoes, although it seemed futile considering she still walked on all fours. "I may have... gone overboard," glittering around her neck was a choker with a pretty little gem. On the other side it read, If you are reading this I am lost. Please return me to Lamia Scale. San was tired, she had never done so many things in one day. She had learned so many words too! "House! House! Home!" San chirped as they entered. Tymol whistled, watching them disappear upstairs. San ran to the bed, turning in a circle to make a nest. "Okay, okay, give me a minute. I really went overboard," he murmured. He placed a stuffed rabbit on the bed and hung up clothing.

"Wait what are you- no! No! Bad! That's what a toilet is for!" San looked up, wondering what was wrong. Adonis lifted her from the corner and brought her to a new room. "This is where you do your business, okay? I'll turn around," San wriggled, not understanding. "Toilet," Adonis made a motion of going to the bathroom. It seemed that at last San had understood and Adonis turned around in relief, his face red.

Morning was a lot of work. "Okay, this should be good." Nieve smiled as Sopheene and Allen and her finished packing the bag. Allen put his hand next to the desk, creating a wind to lift it up into the air and support it's weight so that they could transport it. Nieve was doing the same thing with a chair while on Sopheene's back there were collections of clothes and books and even a small hand mirror. Why were they carrying all these things you ask? It was all for San, of course, the newest member of their family. "Before we start a quest, we should be introduced properly to San." Allen told Nieve, reminding her. "It would be good for her to know more people. Do you think she'll remember our names?" The younger Sylph nodded, agreeing with that. "She's pretty bright."

In just a short time span San had been able to learn so many words, after all. "I don't think that will be a problem." She took a look at Sopheene, who smiled embarrassingly at her. Nieve smiled, she couldn't get enough of the permanent blush always on her sister in law's cheeks, illuminating and brightening up her face tremendously. It made her really cute. For a tall girl to be so blushy... well - Nieve felt her heart sink as Allen gave her a kiss. She should be used to it by now but it still hurt. "U-um... will she like me?" Pheenie asked, squirming after accepting the kiss. "You will be fine. She's pretty friendly." The trio left their house in the Inner Quarter, and headed down the street, greeting the usual faces. At the gates that lead to the Outer Quarter, they passed by a familiar face. It was the local Captain of the Guard, Finn Grant. "Hmm? What's with all that luggage?" He asked, always the diligent watchman. "We're welcoming a new guildmember." Allen said with a grin. "She doesn't have much, so we're sparing some of our things for her." Finn smiled, waving them off. "That's good. Once she's used to the Guild, invite her around for a tour of Phosphora, would ya?" With a smile and a nod, Nieve lead the way down the dirt road.

Entering the Guild Hall, Nieve had a sudden idea. "Hey, why don't we team up with Lyra and Tymol again? Yesterday went pretty well and-" Pheenie started fidgeting with her feet, looking awkward. "U-um, sure?" She shrugged, trying to pretend to be cool. The truth was, Pheenie had such bad social anxiety she barely talked to anyone other than Allen and Nieve. "It won't hurt to make new friends." Allen suggested with a nudge. "Come on, it's not a bad idea. With more people we can take on harder quests, too." They were here a little early, not everyone was back yet. "Let's take the things up for San to see." They said their mornings to Adonis and explained themselves, and headed up towards San's room.

There was a whole lot of things to give her. The Sylph siblings put the desk and chair down, releasing their wind magic to allow the furnitures to rest by the window. The hand mirror was placed on it so San could get a good look at herself. They also put the picture books on top of the desk for her, as well as a new tooth brush. She would have to share the Guild's common cleansing paste for now though. "We even have creams and ointments for your skin." Nieve explained, though she wasn't sure if San understood. The tubes of creams were also put neatly on the wooden desk. "Allen." She pointed at Allen who waved and smiled, flashing the teeth. "Sopheene." Sopheene gave a stiff bow, blushing deeply. "H-h-hello." She stuttered, trying to fight the anxiety.

San slept peacefully, when morning came, Lyra brought her food. "Eggs, bacon, biscuit." San repeated each word back to her eagerly, like an echo. "Very good," Lyra smiled, "hairbrush," she explained, bringing out a gift. "Brush!" San sniffed it in wonder, it smelled shiny. "Yes," Lyra nodded, "good." She went behind the animal as she ate, gobbling up her food. Lyra noticed the new belongings of course, Adonis was already spoiling her. "San like biscuits!" She decided, tail wriggling with pleasure as she ate a second one. With some effort and a few scratches from San's claws, Lyra had detangled her hair. It was long and silky, quite shiny really. "You should brush every day," Lyra explained and placed it on the bed. She left to go take up a quest, figuring it would be best to be productive. As much as Lyra wanted to spend all day here, teaching San about the ways of humans, she had other things to get done.

San watched her go, raising a leg to scratch behind her ear. She whimpered as the door closed, alone again. It wasn't long until it reopened, more friends arriving. Door, it seemed, were not always bad things. San jumped onto the bed eagerly as they brought big things in with them as well as some small things. More friends! Nieve had come back with more friends! "Allen!" San repeated, "Pheephee!" She giggled, running in a circle around them before hopping back up onto the bed. "San," the creature pointed to herself, grinning from ear to ear, displaying her sharp teeth. She sniffed the creams that Nieve had brought for her, not understanding what they really were. The brush looked fun, but San didn't understand that one either.

The door opened again, Adonis entering. "Look at all of this new furniture, I'm sure San will be quite happy." San scampered over to the door, rubbing her head against Adonis's thigh affectionately. He had, after all, shown her how to use the toilet. "Nieve," San bound over to the white haired girl to show her, her thanks. She rubbed her head against Nieve's leg, making a sound similar to a purr. San repeated the same motion to PheePhee and Allen, then, seemingly satisfied, went back to her bed to watch them. Her bed was a mess, everything seemingly gathered into the center in a nest of sorts, just like in her home. She looked out the window excitedly, pointing. "Bird," but when San tapped the glass, the bird flew away.

Her shoulders slumped and she looked back at the others, then to the window. Another bird came and she cheered up once more, "Bird!" San pointed, the little bird chirping and then leaving. Why did the birds keep going? San didn't understand. Where did they go? She wanted to know that too.

It seemed San already had quite a few things. Lyra had even stopped by for a moment to add more decorations for the sparse room. It was already looking a little more like a home. San repeated their names as best as she could. Allen looked a little bit miffed when Sopheene's name proved too hard to say but secretly, Nieve was pleased. Naturally San had good taste, able to tell that Pheenie was a much better nickname for her than Sophie was. San was an unusual looking fae but it had a bit of charm to it, going well with her cutesy animalistic act. Hopefully though she would learn how to act properly like a noble and not like a beast. "Good San, that's good. Here." She opened the tube and squeezed some of the pale green liquid, rubbing it up in her hands.

"This is facial cream, it's made out of an avocado extract." The younger Sylph rubbed it on San's face until it was covered. "Let it stay, do not lick." Did San know that much yet? "Adonis, don't let her lick it. This will keep her skin youthful and pretty." Or as pretty as it could get with all the strange markings all over her body. "You always worry about the silly things. San's perfect just the way she is." Allen said with a grin, ruffling her hair. "It was just brushed, you made it messy again." Nieve frowned, taking the brush and running it through the hair as gently as she could, struggling a little with the knots. Pheenie hung back, wringing her hands as they clutched at the folds of her tunic's trails, as if unsure how to approach. "Pheenie, kneel and hold your hand out for her to squeeze." Nieve suggested.

Pheenie gulped and took small tiny steps forward until she was close enough to kneel, her tall graceful lithe frame looking like a piece of art as she descended onto her knees, holding out a hand. "H-h-hello." Pheenie blushed deeply, unable to keep eye contact for more than half a second. Nieve glanced at Allen, wondering why he hadn't done more to help her out of her shell. He shrugged helplessly, because he didn't feel as if there was much control he had over the situation. The social anxiety was a hurdle Pheenie would have to overcome on her own. No one could really help her with that.

Well, the clock was ticking, and they had to get to work so they could afford to keep up with rent. "Alright, let's get going. We'll check the mission board, Adonis." Allen said, motioning with his hand for Nieve and Sopheene to follow. "I--it was n-n-nice... to m-meet you." Sopheene stuttered, trying to open up to San. "I'll be back later." Last night Nieve had made more medications and tinctures so she would have a good supply just in case things went awry. "Oh, Adonis, leave a note for Lyra and Tymol that we're open to group up with them again for another mission." Allen told Adonis as they left San's room, heading for the mission board to choose the task for today.

San bound over to Nieve when she called her good, Adonis had taught her good only yesterday and San decided she liked the word. She looked up expectantly, wondering what it was in Nieve's hand. San struggled against her as the green slime was applied to her face, she tried to lick it of course, but by Nieve's expression, it seemed that was not what she was supposed to do. It felt strange on her face, cold and squishy. Why couldn't San lick it? She wondered as she was subjected once more to the horrible brush. San whimpered, attempting to run away and hide underneath the desk, but a chair blocked her path, pinning her between the desk and Nieve. "Nyyyyaaa!" San mewled as her hair was untangled once more.

Pheephee stepped forward, holding out her hand. San looked at it curiously, was there food? She wondered, licking Pheephee's hand. The girl did not seem to like that, she blushed and backed away. San tilted her head to the side curiously, there was no food, but it did taste like coconuts. San watched them go, whining as Adonis tried to close the door. He sighed, "Oh alright, come on." Adonis picked up a pillow from her nest and led San downstairs, to his desk. He set the pillow down for her to sit on. San pat it down with her hands and sat, watching as strangers and familiar faces came over to the desk. San wanted to greet each one of course. While some reacted to her strange looks, others reached out to pat her head or provide scratches underneath her chin, which made San's tail thump against the floor happily.

Occasionally she would point to something, wanting to know the name of it. "Sword," Adonis provided willingly, "pencil. Would you like to try it?" He set down a long piece of parchment and some colorful pencils, San perked up instantly, scribbling away. "Hey, you're pretty good at that." Adonis admired, his smile wide as he watched her draw away. He handed her more parchment to keep her occupied, San going a bit slower on that one to draw a bird. "I guess all that time alone gave you plenty of time to pick up a hobby, huh?" He asked, rising to grab some food as lunch was served. The residents of the Guild Hall took turns making meals, as it was part of their dues. "One day you'll have to learn how to cook," Adonis spoke, knowing she did not understand.

"Fish, rice, beans," Adonis pointed to each, "ketchup." San wriggled happily, waiting for permission to eat. "Fork, knife," he placed one in each of San's hands. "Like this," he cut the fish up into pieces. "Then like this," he stabbed a piece of fish with his fork and ate it. San dropped both utensils and gobbled her food up, making a right mess out of her clothing and face.

With Adonis's blessing, Nieve, Sopheene, and Allen received their quest. There was a request for them to go and take out a horde of goblins living in a cave outside of Phosphora, by the old trading outpost where Phosphoran farmers and merchants used to set up shop each Sunday to sell their food and wares to other cities. "Goblins are a cinch." Allen was confident they would be fine. Sopheene was amazingly strong with a sword and he was one of the best archers in the Guild. Nieve wasn't much of a fighter but she could still use her ether to create wind to fight with. Mix wind with the poisons she always has available in her pack and you have quite useful chemical warfare options. "They breed like rabbits though, so they need to be culled every now and then."

If goblins were allowed to breed unchecked, they would eventually have so many that no one would be able to fight them. That was why it was important to kill as many goblin nests as you could find the moment they were discovered. "Wh-who's the client?" Pheenie asked, still not putting her mask on yet. Nieve glanced at the slip of paper. "The Guardsman of Phosphora pitched in together." Apparently the Guards aren't allowed to go on expeditions outside the city because their job is to protect the walls. Therefore it makes sense that they try to hire Guilds to go take care of outside problems in their stead. "It pays well, and that's what matters." Allen stepped forward with stride, leading the way to the marked cave on the map they were supplied.

It was pretty easy in the end. They had the feather of the tribe leader (each goblin tribe has a leader and each leader has a special feather growing from it's head) and now was time to cash in their reward. Sopheene was so beautiful and graceful and Nieve - no, it didn't really matter what she felt anyways. She was even cuter as she blushed and panted trying to regain her breath after such a good fight. Was there a work of art better than Pheenie? Allen agreed and gave her a kiss, so Nieve looked away, preferring not to see it. Her heart burned, but she knew she just had to get used to it is all.

Feeling tired, Nieve flopped down on the couch as Allen cashed in the reward. "Easy as always, boss." He grinned, taking another quest. "Sophie and I can do this one alone, if you want to rest, sis." Nieve nodded, she would take him up on that offer. The younger Sylph pulled out some vials and herbs and sighed, knowing that the job never ended. "Adonis, you should bring San down to watch me make my materials. Maybe she'll find it fun." She already had her mixing kit set up, and arranged a place on the desk to begin the work. Make drugs to fight quests to afford to make more drugs in order to do more quests. It never ended, but that was life after all.

Adonis nodded, “I’m sure she would. She’s been cooped up here most of the day,” Adonis rose from the desk, he had been busy using ink and quill to fill out the paperwork that demanded his attention. He smiled as he brought San down, who pattered happily on all four’s down the stairs to sit across from Nieve, her tail wagging eagerly like a puppy. Her horns glittered in the midday light and the monster licked her lips, leaning forward to sniff whatever it was Nieve was doing. She whined, wanting to help, but not knowing how. Adonis set down paper and ink, “she’s quite good at this, I think it makes her feel useful.” He went to sit down at his own desk as San got to work, drawing all of the herbs and ingredients that Nieve had on the table. She stuck her tongue out of her mouth between sharp fangs. Her expression was nothing short of adorable as she worked on depicting what it was Nieve was doing.

When it was done, San nudged the photo forward with her nose, her tail swishing once more. Did Nieve like it? San wondered. Lyra too, had returned from a day of quests and sat across from them, “I brought this, I thought we all might try some.” A small tart that had yellow, lemon custard and crunchy meringue on top. “Here San,” Lyra cut off a slice. “Crust, lemon, meringue.” She pointed to each piece, then sliced off some for Nieve and at last, a piece for herself. Lyra’s hands were shaking, ever so slightly, if you looked closely. No doubt the banshee had, had a vision of a death. She had learned early on that divulging to others of their doom would not stop it, it would merely change how they met their end. She remained silent of it, of course, instead, indulging in sweets to stop the terror.

San sniffed the tart uncertainly, it smelled sour. “Lemon,” she parroted, looking between Lyra and Nieve to see if it was for eating, sniffing, or something else. “You eat it,” Lyra mocked eating to show her. San licked it tentatively, “try this,” she pushed a spoon towards San, who held it in her fist, wondering what she was supposed to use it for. “Hmm, I guess it really is too early for that.” San licked the spoon, cringing at the taste. “Bad!” She placed the spoon down and licked the tart again, taking small bites, as she was uncertain if she liked the lemon or not. “Silly girl,” someone said from behind them. It seemed that the Guild was already becoming fond of their new pet. San’s Tail swished, deciding that she enjoyed the flavor and she began to take nibbles, unable to gobble it down because of the sour lemon.

“I’ve realized,” Adonis cleared his throat, coming up from behind them once more, “that San is quite trainable.” He pat her head, the monster making a sound between a purr and a mewl of delight. “I think she could become quite useful, even if she can’t yet communicate properly.”
