VIRGINIA ROSENBURG was an unusually independent eighteen-year-old woman- for 1919, at least. She had her own job, neglected chaperones, and fought for female suffrage, equally being a progressive woman and the bane of her family's existence. Though independence is the least of their problems after February 10th. After another failure to ratify the 19th Amendment, Virginia had enough. With a group of other suffragettes, Virginia took to the White House, armed with picket signs. With a burst of aggression, Virginia Rosenburg is the first person to use her powers publicly. A ring of fire engulfs nearby reporters while safely enclosing the suffragettes.
No newspaper in the United States went without a Rosenburg headline that next morning. Those who didn't hear about it now knew about the "Suffragette on Fire". Virginia Rosenburg was immediately taken into federal custody, and though her physical presence was locked away in a federal prison, her impact set the entire nation on fire.
The Rosenburg family never saw Virginia again, well, until two men in sunglasses and uniforms dropped off her coffin to her brother Ernest Rosenburg. No one really knows what happened, but speculation from Ernest suggests excessive amounts of torture and experimentation, considering the state of her body when it was returned to the family. Virginia's body was laid to rest in the family cemetery, and Ernest was murdered two weeks after, leaving the mystery of the two Rosenburg children to be buried with them.
Since then, there have been few incidents, but when they happened, the headlines were never out of the loop.
There was the DELVECCHIO TWINS, in 1937, accused of murdering five Hollywood actresses in the course of ten days. Gilbert and Gordon Delvecchio had no alibis for all five nights, and even confessed to each murder, but there was no evidence to convict them, no fingerprints, no video recordings, even the knife used to slit the women's throats was missing. Instead of being convicted, like Virginia, Gilbert and Gordon disappeared into federal custody, and Gilbert's daughter refused to accept the corpses.
Then came Janet Vayner, in 1964, a Civil Rights Activist who wanted the world to know that superhumans exist. She wasn't alone, the group was idolized in the newspapers and TV stations as "The Power Quartet": JANET VAYNER, WENDY DURRETT, RUSSELL EWING, and DEAN KREZEL. They were the first to officially protest for basic rights and normalcy in society for superhumans. "There's a whole world of us out there, you can't ignore us!" Became their battle cry. Their numbers were few, even when they gained national attention, and they ironically became the key to African American civil rights. Give rights to the humans first, was the logic running through Congress. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed, overshadowing the Superhuman Rights protest. The Power Quartet was taken into federal custody quietly and for the moment, the superhuman demographic was silenced.
For the next thirty years, the topic of superhumans was taboo in the United States. Those who exposed their abilities were either shunned from society or worse, taken into custody to be shipped off to the government. Other countries were starting to take positions on the superhuman subject: while most countries also ignored the existence of superhumans, some actively hunted for superhumans and some welcomed them into their country for asylum. One of the biggest issues of UN meetings in those years was the international stance on superhumans. Superhumans started to create their own secret societies; abandoned buildings became shelters and orphanages, paper towns became actual cities, and superhumans started to flourish in their own secret world.
One secret world came in the form of a college dorm room. What started as trust between two roommates evolved into a small group of... well, kids, really: anyone around their age that could handle a few secrets. Considering the climate around people like them in America, it wasn't hard to stay trustworthy. They wanted to be there for each other, helping each other with these skills that no one else could have. Recently, there's been a few strange cars, and with an influx of new members, they might not be as safe as they think.
