The tests had hurt but as usual Emily had stayed quiet as she was poked and prodded with needles and hands. Currently her nurse was exclaiming about a big purple bruise on her charges arm and how it defaced 'Little Emily's pretty skin.' The woman was being deliberatly patronizing. It was too obvious that she was trying to provoke her. Emily didn't care. She was lost inside her own little dark world that the light of day never touched. Oddly enough Emily was afraid of the dark, or had been, before the blind fold made the dark her constant compainion. Her nurse prattled on about something that sounded like a dull buzzing.
'Maybe we should go and finish breakfast? The doctor said you'd be fine now and i'm sure you're hungry after those tests.'
Emily felt the nurse take her hand.
'This way sweetheart.'
She let herself be pulled back towards the sound of voices and smell of food even though she didn't want to. She had come the conclusion that if she wanted out she needed a partner to be her eyes. She needed someone who wasn't handicapped by blindness. The noise in the cafeteria was much less than it had been earlier which suited Emily. The nurse stopped walking.
'Do you mind if we sit here?'
That was the fake voice used on patients but god knew who because Emily couldn't see them.
