Kross had heard the gunshot alright. He just figured he wasn't a State Alchemist yet so it wasn't his duty to go check it out. Plus there were probably hundreds of people running to the location so why would he need to join in the mob?
I passed the tests for you father, I am to become a state alchemist. Hopefully you can now rest in piece... Kross thought as he grabbed a bottle of apple juice and started drinking from it. Looking around he noticed that he was one of only a few left in the cafeteria that had not left to go in search of whatever had happened involving that gunshot. Finishing his apple juice he stands up and walks out a different door in the cafeteria to an outside courtyard. "Now where did everybody run off to?" He said to himself rubbing his head with one hand.
Then he saw it out of the corner of his eye, a flash in one of the windows. He turned and looked and saw a group led by Mustang chasing after whatever he had seen come before them. Guess it is my problem now... Kross thought as he took off at the full speed his auto mail allowed, faster than any normal man should have ever been able to run. He ran quickly across the courtyard and jumped as high as he could landing on the roof of Central and running along it, following the way he would take from above if he ever had to flee central. He soon reached a door and he jumped down and flung the door open, staring straight into the one being chased face. He instinctively reached down and created a large, curved dagger from the metal in his auto mail and held it up to the mans throat in a flash.
"Don't move or I kill you where you stand..." Kross said menacingly.
