The mother screaming. For some reason all Darna could hear was that horrifying, blood-curdling howl piercing her eardrums in the darkness. Nails scratching at wood; pleas to save the dead thing laying mercilessly in the middle of the circles...

Something about Isaac's statement made her blood boil. A fire raged inside her and she stood up, clenching her fists at her sides, face turned down for there was nothing but blackness for her to look at. She'd given up a great sense to try and save a baby that had no blood-ties to her. She had no rhyme or reason to try and save that baby... but the mother. Her helpless sounds and tears. The sobs and the gut-wrenching prayers.

"There is only one way. But not all of us get the great pleasure of being blessed with a power such as yours!" She hissed the words out through her teeth. She was useless in her trade. She could fix things. He could heal people. He could have saved that child, right? And he spoke of the taboo like it was an every day occurrence. The Gate was terrifying. Darna never wished that sight on anyone, and she wished she'd never seen it either.

"Not everyone wishes to remember what they saw in the Gate..." she huffed and shook her head, shoving her hands into her pockets. Another drink... No, another couple of drinks and a nice, fat cigar. Darna needed some time to grasp this situation. But of course, she wouldn't leave just yet.

"Why in God's name would you want us paired? Paired for what? I've never had a... partner, I guess you would call it. You know I don't need one." Except for her cane. She'd have to buy another probably. No one had yet to mention if they'd found it. "And besides, if I want to know how to perform his alkahestry, then I will watch him elsewhere. We don't have to be around each other all the time." She was being harsh only because he'd hurt a very deep chord within her. The Colonel was angry with him and herself.
