Daen shrugged, his pointed ears twitching, monitoring the area around him as he gave Zmey his attention.

"Honestly I don't know. I discovered the ability to blend into the shadows, even the most shallow ones, fairly early on in life. It helped when I had to hide from the thugs on the street. Most people I've met seem to have something against cats I think. Then there's the shadow portaling. I can move from one shadow to another, even if they aren't connected."

He shrugs again before reaching up to idly scratch at his ear.

"Anyway, I don't know if I was cursed as a newborn, or if my parents were as freaky as I am but I've always been like this, and now and then I find out I can do something new. Anyway, sorry for scaring you so bad. I just figured since you had no qualms about flicking those bits of shadow at that one girl that you might enjoy a prank or two. Oh yeah, you're new here so I might as well be the first to say it: Welcome to ImmortalNight. The school for us scary things!"

His grin broadened as he said that. He tried his best to make a joke of it, acting as if it was fun to be different or inhuman. Still, his eyes couldn't quite hide the hurt and his joke was only a bit too forced. Anyone who was very good at reading others would see that Daen had not had a good life and that being considered a freak was probably the reason.

"Oh! Hey, lunch should be starting soon! Let's go!" he cried, grabbing Zmey by the hand and pulling her along down the halls and towards the cafeteria. His grip was firm, his hand rough, but he was clearly trying to be gentle. And clearly looking to change subjects.
