Jeff watched silently through the window, crouched low to the surface of the porch roof and staying motionless. He could see enough of Cid’s face to know that it wasn’t going well. His weight shifted backwards at the same time he saw the alpha adjust his stance, and waited like a spring-loaded projectile. When he heard the rogue say that Garett was dead, his ears flattened and his lips curled back, his black hair bristling along his spine.

Then it happened. An unmistakeable move of aggression. In his heart Jeff felt hesitant, but his wolf spirit made up the lack and responded within a fraction of a second of seeing the move. There was a shattering of glass as he launched himself forward, latching himself onto the rogue’s back and digging his claws in. The intruder’s back and shoulders were so broad that there wasn’t an easy natural edge to even try to snap at with his jaws, so instead Jeff simply clung on. There was no way he was gonna take this guy down by himself, but he was counting on Cid to step in and do the job.

But something went wrong. He felt a powerful grip on the scruff of his neck as the rogue reached backwards with terrifying agility for such an enormous male, and the next thing he knew he was flung to the side and hit against something with an almighty crash. The impact was like being hit by a freight train, and the air in his lungs was forced out in an impulsive, painful yelp, before the secondary impact as he dropped back onto the floor in a crumpled heap.

Cid shook with raw determination which remained unspent as the rogue’s attack didn’t actually make it all the way to it’s mark. The window smashed inwards and the rogue became a frenzied whirlwind as he tried to dislodge his assailant, eventually succeeded, sending the black wolf crashing against Kiara’s wardrobe, which itself crashed inwards on contact.

The alpha wasted no time. Whilst the rogue was turned to the side, he lurched forwards, circumventing Kiara and leaning down low, hopping onto the bed to use it as a springboard and cannonballing himself into the rogue’s torso. He caught him completely off balance, and the two gigantic males were thrown straight through the gap where Kiara’s window used to be, landing on top of the porch, skidding across the rough pebbledashed surface and dropping onto the gravel driveway below.

It was in no way a graceful landing, and Cid felt his shoulder jar painfully as the impact separated the two males. Gritting his teeth against the pain, he clambered to his feet, and turned to engage the rogue. By this stage he had abandoned all hope that perhaps the intruder would simply turn and run. This guy was stubborn, stupid, and driven by the belief that his ‘mate’ was still inside the house.

Hoping to catch him before he was fully composed, Cid rush forward with a feral growl and drew his fist back to deliver a punch to the head and hopefully a quick K.O....

Cassidy thinned her lips and nodded, ushering everyone into the room. She pulled Emmy alongside her and stroked the girl's hair reassuringly, even though the news she bore made Cassidy's heart sink into her feet. She also looked across at Tai, noting the surprising contortion of anger on her face.

"Don't worry guys," she said, "we're gonna be OK."

Her mind launched into the well rehearsed debate between her instinctual concern for her mate's safety, and the lucid knowledge that it was Cid's duty and fate to protect the rest of them whatever the consequences. Even so, she nearly jumped out of her skin as there was an almight crash of glass, followed by struggling, then a huge thud and crash of wood, a yelp, a growl and another crash as the skirmish seemed to move outside the house. Without any remaining doubt, she hit the 'send' icon on the PDA, and hoping that even after the summer bonfire a few people would have remained on standby. Cid's high alert was still in effect after all.

Dropping the device into the oversized pocket of her bath robe, she looked out of the window, but it was facing the wrong way for her to see what was going on. She wondered if it was worth taking everyone down to the safe-room, but if Cid and the rogue were outside then they were probably just as safe here in the master bedroom. All they could do now is wait.

Then with a sudden thought, she added, "Has anyone seen Kiara, Bobby and Jeff? Are they still in their rooms?"
