After being off the grid for so long there was no way that one of the Clairvoyants out there wouldn't pick up on Daath's resonance. The last thing he needed was to be found out by Harrison. Of course, he was adept at masking his energy output but that said very little in comparison to his true level of release. There was still one factor of his abilities that he was never able to purge; one aspect that he could never mask. That would put him back on the map-and it would only be so long before Molly Guidry found out. If Molly were to know then Francine Butress would surely know. This was a problem.
This was going to be another wrong place-right time situations that he should have gracefully bowed out of. It just wasn't in him to do so. There was no way that these two fresh releases were going to stop this Shade. Daath wasn't just going to let them die either.
The girl, though encompassing a formidable strength, would probably wave her sword around like a madman-the same as she had at the train station. And the young man, though belting out powerful bursts of modified sound energy, would probably tire himself out before he could learn to channel the energy more efficiently and blow the Shade to pieces without bringing down Tokyo Tower in the process. There was still the fact that neither of them could teleport, become invisible or cause enough of a disturbance for all of them to get away unseen. Actually, that wasn't true. A large enough explosion of sound could kick up enough debris to offer a veil that would allow them to escape. That mattered not-Daath could get the two of them out.
The Shade-tossed against the base of the tower-was quick to get to its feet. These things were resilient, they didn't go down easily. But it all depended on if the Shade's meal had offered it enough nourishment. Before the battle could really commence the Shade may have just tore open a fissure in space-time and returned to its own dimension. It was impossible to know. The Shade's escape was actually a favorable outcome. It was better than the possibility of two dead and a battle at the base of Tokyo Tower. It seemed as if the Shade wanted to fight. Daath, watching from afar, said, "I don't like this..."
The Shade was cracking its left arm into place when it looked toward the two releases and slowly began walking toward the two of them. The girl was powerful for a release but the young man seemed to have terrified himself with his own burst of powers. That tended to be a normal reaction. Daath was terrified the first time he dropped a milligram of antimatter energy into a Shade's body as well. Just that much of the stuff could cause so much energy to be released that a Shade would be ripped to shreds. A few grams of antimatter could cause a 18 kiloton explosion as it came into contact with matter, as the two particles would annihilate one another. It would be like dropped another Little Boy on Nagasaki-except this was Tokyo.
All Daath needed to do was get close enough to the Shade and land a blow that would allow him to drop just a little bit of antimatter into the Shade's body and they could watch the fireworks. The Shade's atmospheres usually contained the subsequent explosion.
The energy was volatile, uncontrollable at times-and even Daath was afraid of it. The left arm of his RedBull Racing jacket was cut at the elbow, hemmed, and pinned at the shoulder with buttons-as he'd lost his left arm in an antimatter explosion nearly ten years prior. That didn't matter anymore...
Daath exploded past the running-screaming-crying pedestrians as the Shade began to make its way toward the two. It caught sight of Daath and stopped, forming its blade. Daath came to a stop near the two releases and said, "My name is Daath. If you'll help me destroy this thing I'll tell you everything I can about what you two are now. Just don't destroy the tower. There are people that I don't want to have to explain that to."
The girl began to say something but Daath politely cut her off and said, "There is no time for questions. When this thing is dead I will help you." With that, Daath was gone, disappearing in a writhing haze of black and red dust and smoke. He reappeared behind the Shade, exploding from a dance of the mist in mid-air, driving his left foot into the Shade's back. The monster stumbled forward but quickly turned back with a swipe of its sword but Daath was gone again, reappearing above the monster, driving down upon it with a powerful punch to the back of its head. He began to teleport once more but the Shade screeched, opened its wings and released a spherical blast of energy. Daath was torn away and hurled into the grass beyond the Shade.
