Introduction
Olivia came first, poking her head around the doorway. βMs. August, I didnβt know that you were home. I didnβt hear you come inβ¦β Olivia was Charlie Smithβs caretaker and Charlie Smith was Augustβs brother. While August was at New York University, Charlie needed to be cared for, as he suffered from Asperger Syndrome. Charlesβ suffering from an autism spectrum had made things difficult on August but their parents managed to leave them a substantial amount of money when theyβd passed.
August and Charlesβ parents died in 2008, while August was still attended Stuyvesant High School in New York. Theyβd been driving home from Albany with Charles when they were hit by a drunk driver in a pick-up truck. Both of them had been killed when their Chrysler was hurled into a pole. The car had impacted with so much force that the front of the automobile had been ripped off, her parents still inside. Charles had been fineβ¦.miraculously. Theyβd lived in Stuyvesant town then. August had never felt comfortable going much further so she and Charles moved not too far away on 110th Street, overlooking Central Park.
August smiled at Olivia. The Russian womanβs smile tore into Augustβs soul as it always had. She was such a wonderful old woman. She had been with them since before the tragedy. She loved August and Charles. Sheβd also made quite a bit of money for herself taking care of Charles while school was in session. Today was Friday though, and August would have her brother to herself.
August said, βIβve picked up his prescription for his decongestant today. So you donβt have to worry about getting it and coming back. That way youβll be off earlierβ¦β
Olivia thanked August as she began to place things in a bag she had sitting on the kitchen table. August went to the refrigerator and grabbed a carton of Dole guava-flavored juice, opened it and began drinking from it. Olivia walked to the cabinets, withdrew a glass and walked over to August. When she took the carton, August said, βOlivia, come on man, Iβm thirstyβ¦ Oliviaβ¦β
βUse a glass, please, Ms. August. Your brother is only sick now because you wonβt stop drinking off of cartons and jugs.β Olivia poured juice into the glass and handed it to August. βTake itβ¦.β
βI donβt like glassesβ¦β
βTake it, Ms. Augustβ¦β
August reluctantly took the glass as Olivia placed the carton back into the fridge. August took a swig and Olivia said, βOkay, Ms. August, I will see you Monday morningβ¦β Now, Olivia was rushing to gather her things. August turned down her brow questionably and giggled, βOlivia, what are you doingβ¦?β
βOh, Ms. August, I donβt mean to rush off,β she said as she placed her car cars between her teeth and past them she muttered, βWell actually, I do. But I donβt mean to be rudeβ¦β
βWhatβs going on? Are you being deportedβ¦again?β
Olivia shot a harsh look at August who smiled guardedly. βThat was a misunderstanding, Ms. August. And you know that. But what is going on is the fact that I have a date tonightβ¦β
βYou, Olivia?β August asked, impressed.
βYes, Ms. August, me. I have to get mine too, Ms. Augustβ¦β
August laughed heartily and Olivia narrowed her eyes. βI donβt see you go on any dates, Ms. August,β she said as she made her way to the hall.
August followed Olivia as she headed for the door and August said, βI do have my dates. I spend my evenings with Charles. That is all I need.β
Olivia laughed sweetly and was out of the door, pulling it closed.
August turned away, releasing what Olivia had mentioned from her mind. She wanted to find Charles. He was probably in his play room. Indeed, he was. When August peeked into the room she smiled at Charles, who had his back to her. He was building another Lego structure. On some days it was all he would do; play with Legos and eat Bologna sandwiches. There was a plate next to him with crumbs on it. He had his sandwiches with no crust. βCharles,β August called, but he ignored her. He was building a Lego Eifel Tower. He had no plans, no Lego books and no magazines by National Geographic so she was never sure how he was able to build structures like this. He ignored her the next time she called his name. Instead of responding to what she was saying, he said, βFeelβ¦.Rainyβ¦β
βIt doesnβt feel like rain, Charlesβ¦β
βNo, Rainy, feeeelβ¦β
Then, there was a harsh bang at the door. Charles didnβt jumpβ¦but August had. She slowly made her way down the hall and turned, looking down toward the door. There was sharp, crude bang once again and she jumped, yelping a little. βHelloβ¦β she said as she walked down the hall. There was another bang and a man with a deep, gritty, phlegmy voice said, βOpen the doorβ¦β
August called out, βWho is it? Who are youβ¦?β
βJust open the doorβ¦β
βNo,β August said and leaned in toward the door when she got there, looking through the peephole. She jumped back when the hooded man banged on the door again. She shivered and said, βDonβt bang on the door. Iβm not letting you in. Iβll call the copsβ¦β
βThey are of no-β the man yelled and slammed into the door, βCONSEQUENCE! Let me in!β He hit the door again and it seemed to be knocked slight off of its hinges. He was breaking it. August backed away, reached around the kitchen doorway and grabbed the phone. Dialing quickly, she waited for someone to answer. She yelled into the phone that a man was breaking into the house and she jumped when the man slammed himself into the door again. She was hysterical and the woman on the phone with emergency services was giving her the run-around. βHeβd breaking in right now! Heβs ramming the door right now!β
The woman talked more and August became frustrated and threw the phone down the hallway. She was going to have to fight. She knew how. Sheβd taken a myriad of martial arts sense she was six years old. She was a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do-but that was only in practice. Sheβd never used her skills before.
The man hit the door once more and cracked it. Then, he was in. He came straight at her, staring hatefully with eyes that appeared as black as night. There were no pupils, no iris, just swarming blackness. His face was scarred and wrinkled and when he grit his teeth, blackened, decayed teeth showed. He threw a furious punch at Augustβs head and she ducked beneath it, pressing both of her fists into the manβs belly with all her might. He was hurled away from her, back toward the doorβ¦but he only came forward once more. The hall was too small for his bulk. He tore into the wall to his right, Augustβs left, with a punch, and she was sprayed with debris but she leaned forward, under the blow, allowed his fist to slam into the wall to her right and she flipped her left leg up, slamming the bottom of her foot into the manβs face. She screamed, blood sprayed on the back of her head. She drew her leg back down, spread her arms for balance and used the momentum to swing her leg up, slamming her toes into the bruteβs chin. He stepped back, blood spraying from his nose.
Then, the man tackled her. Sheβd not expected that. He was more powerful than she, bigger. He sat up, punched for her face but she moved her head and she felt his fist graze her ear, bruising cartilage. She screamed but Charles was saying, βRainyβ¦.?β The man looked up to see Charles and August craned her neck back. She yelled, βCharles, run!β
The man looked down at August and shoved another punch in toward her face. She was able to dodge again but he raised his other fist. August shoved her knee between the manβs legs, ramming his testicles. The man roared in pain and August yelled herself, drawing her hands from beneath the man as he shifted. She shoved her hands into the man as hard as she could and he was knocked back onto his toes and heels. She shot forward, slamming her hands into his chest to push him back. He allowed her next blow to graze off of his right forearm and he swung down with his left. His weight came down on her again and she was tossed to the floor but she moved her head and his fist cracked the floor. She didnβt understand how heβd done this but she grabbed him, flipped him above her head and held on as he slammed into the floor, widening the spectrum of cracks heβd put in the floor. A human could not crack the floor of an apartment like this. August kicked her legs up above her head, flipped herself onto the manβs chest and slammed her knees into his. The floor buckled beneath his weight and her strength and she yelped as the floor gave way.
They were in the barren apartment below, it was being renovated. It was all concrete, wood and sheetrock. August coughed through the dust and realized she was still on top of the man. He realized it to. He grabbed her and hurled her above his head. She slammed into a wall, back-first and fell from it, to the floor. She cried out when she landed but the man was up. August scrambled to right herself and to get to her feet. He was too fast; he was going to hit her. Reflexively, she put her hands up in front of her face but she watched as the manβs arm slammed into an invisible wall of energy and shattered, flesh tearing away from muscle, muscle shredding and bones erupting from within this mangled, ragged mess of flesh and blood. August screamed and the wall behind her buckled away from her, shattering. Dust and debris from behind her showered behind her and around her. The scream resonated away from her as a burst of energy unlike any sheβd believed could exist. The man was thrown away from her. His body spiraled away, his arms limply flailing at his sides, blood exploding from his body. He hit the ceiling, bounced off of it and slammed into the floor, sliding with a trail of blood.
August raised her hands, stared at them, shaking her head. What was happened to her? How was she capable of this? The man was getting to his feet but August would not let him come near her again. She screamed at him, the floor beneath her cracking as the manβs left arm was literally blown off. It flipped away from him, crashed through a window and fell away from the building. The man paid no mind to this as he made his way toward August again. Her body reacted once more, sending out a shockwave of energy. The man was hit in the chest, his shirt exploded away from his back, blood sprayed on the wall and windows behind him. He yelled and August yelled back. A burst of energy slammed into the man, throwing him out of the window. There was a crash, followed by screams and the blaring of car alarms.
August was released from her trance. Her ear was still ringing from being hit. Then, she realized that it was not just her earβ¦it was the phone upstairs. She walked toward the hole in the ceiling of the room and when she looked up, Charles was on the phone. She smiled at him as he looked down at her and said, βIt is uncle Chip. Chip is on the phone, Rainyβ¦β
Chip was a lieutenant with the police. At least someone would come. Be it the lack of adrenaline or simply because these innate abilities that lie dormant within August Rayne Smith understood that she was free of danger, but she took a deep breath and collapsed on the pile of rubble that had once been her hallway floor.

The springs creaked as she flopped onto her back on the mattress and stared at the ceiling as she continued to mull over the situation. At least she had Alex, even if he had powers like she did he was a fragment of what her life was before. Most others didnβt even have that, so she should count her blessings and buck up right? With this thought in mind she hopped up from her bed and plodded down the hall barefoot, already in her pink pajamas they provided as she made her way to her brotherβs room.
Not even knocking, she barreled inside the room and immediately started talking. βDonβt say a word about the pink pajamas. Itβs what they had so I have to wear them and if I hear one giggle or see even a slight hint of a smirk, Iβll melt your face off with a bolt you hear?!β Plodding in, she crawled into his bed and under the sheets before peeking out at him. βAlso Iβm going to be staying in here tonight because I want too. No teasing about when I was younger and not liking new places or slumber parties or, once again, I must threaten you with bodily harm.β With her rules laid out, she then furrowed her brow at him as he sat staring at her holding a glass of water. βOoooh practicing are we? Show me what ya got.β

Edana clapped her hands impressed "Ok not bad so did you learn anything else?". Alex grinned at her "Actually there is one other thing so far". He concentrated on the water and once again clenched his fist over the water but this time he released his had quickly spreading out his fingers as wide as they could go. Suddenly the water evaporated in a rush of steam. Alex waved his hand through the air directing the cloud of water around the room. Finally he directed it back into the glass panting a bit. "I realized that I was only using two of the states of water solid and liquid. I realized that I needed to incorporate the gas form into my fighting style as well to be more effective. I'm wanting to be able to do this much quicker in the future though, that and after a few seconds the steam cools off and turns into mist which isn't near as effective of a weapon so I need to work on that." He looked at Edana "If I keep this up then I think I can keep those things from killing so many innocent people" He said with a big grin before passing out and hitting the floor with a solid thump.

Daniella, help me... Get me down.
Daniella's vision snapped back to the woman hanging from the fence and her eyes were very well open, staring at Daniella.
"I-I can't....help you now..."
Well you should have...you should have helped me because that's what you're supposed to do. But you can't because you're weak.
"That's not true. You don't know what you're sa-"
I know very well what I'm saying Daniella..."
"You DON'T!" Daniela yelled but she opened her eyes and sat up quickly, drenched in sweat. She panted, pressing her hand between her breasts, trying to calm her heart. She was only startled again when there was a knock at the door. It was only Sleggar. "Hey, Dani, you got a minute?"
Hopefully she didn't want to go to bed with him as well. She got out of the bed, clad in Christmas pajamas, sliding her feet into Bug Bunny's mouths and going to the done. She opened the door, peered at the man with sheepish eyes and simply said, "This better be good..."

The mansion in Marseille, France.
Jean and Isis were walking along the grounds of the manor when he asked the woman, "What do you think?"
It was an empty question and he could have been asking her of many things but she knew exactly what he wanted. She smiled with a soft puff of a laugh through her nose and she said, "I think we're in trouble this time around..."
"Why do you say that?" Jean asked.
"Because all signs point to something big. There is only so long before the governments are out for blood, before they want to study us, before they want to weaponize us. We're going to be in trouble. We may be in more danger from the people we intend to protect, as opposed to our own enemies..."
"You think so?"
"I just feel it. Whatever it is that is coming, it doesn't feel good."
"What do you think of our new friends?"
"Friends... You know I don't do well with those Jean?"
Jean chuckled and said, "But you're not like Molly, Isis, I can mask you. Are you going to stay this time?"
"For a little while. I kind of promised someone something..."
Jean, surprised, showing it well in his old French face said, "You made a promise to someone? That is new. Are we changing after all of these years?"
"No, Jean, I'm not changing at all. He just reminds me of myself back in the day..."
"You haven't changed in nearly thirty years and you want to talk about 'back in the day'?"
Isis laughed softly and hugged herself against the cold morning air. "Alright. He is very much like me; full of pain, rage, sadness-just wants to make amends."
"Oh, yes, that does sound a lot like you..."
"He set his family ablaze, I crushed mine in a sphere of darkness that I couldn't control, didn't understand, all because a Shade attacked. I was trying to save them. I don't know if he was attempting to save his family at the time but I know what he did and I know he is very sad about it. I know what he feels. I know what it feels like to believe that if you'd had just a little more control then you could have saved them as opposed to condemning them with powers outside the lines of your control."
"It was an inevitable end. There is little that we can do when these things happen. We try, but we fail. We all fail sometimes."
"But why have the responsibilities that come along with these powers to fail so often. I feel like we're breeding in weakness-fighting a Goddamned losing battle. I am left with this stinging pain, Jean, only because I feel responsible for so many that I wasn't able to save. When will we come out on top, when will our power burgeon so that we can destroy those that deserve it will little to no resistance? Why fight so hard to lose so many?"
"I haven't the answers for those questions," Jean said solemnly and Isis knew that it hurt the man not to have them. She smiled at him softly. He was an old man after her very own heart. She looked away from him, watching the ground ahead of her feet. "You know, Jean, I love you."
"You do, Isis?"
"Oh, don't be like that."
Jean laughed as Isis took a hold of his arm closest to her and walked closer to him. "Well," he said, "I love you too, Isis. And I really want you to stay here this time. It is enough not to be able to have Molly here with me. I don't have many of my friends with me. Delilah is in Paris and Daath will not come back."
"I will stay..." Isis said. But her mind drifted away to Daath soon enough. They needed him.

Harrison was rummaging around in the refrigerator when Chip shuffled in, dragging his socks against the tile. He grumbled sleepily and without looking away from the fridge Harrison said, "Can't sleep?"
"Oh, no," Chip said, "I can sleep. I'm thirsty."
"Ah, well, there is always plenty here. Have your fill." Harrison said, leaving the door ajar as Chip shuffled past him and he sat on a stool at the island in the middle of the kitchen. Chip looked through the amenities as Harrison opened a cup of yogurt and began to spoon some into his mouth. Chip chuckled and said, "Prune juice?"
"I had...issues...before I got my abilities, Chip. I have bad experiences..."
"Fair enough. Speak no more," he chuckled as he withdrew a glass jar of orange juice. "Glasses...?"
"Top cabinet, two to the left of the fridge," Harrison said without looking away from the yogurt cup. Chip went straight for the glasses as Harrison said, "You didn't ask me how I knew it was you coming into the kitchen..."
"Strange to you?" Chip asked as he fetched a glass and poured some juice. "Well," he said, going to the fridge with the jar, "I figured you would know because I don't have powers. It would be easy to tell me apart from the others."
"You're right about that. You're very perceptive."
"Well, it was part of my job as a detective. I'm actually relieved I am not stuck in New York looking at dead bodies to tell you the truth. I didn't realize I hated my job until I was helping my niece flee to Paris to save the world." Chip said, mocking emphasis added at the end of his statement.
Harrison laughed as voices filled the hall beyond and Chip turned, leaving his glass on the counter as he said, "Connie... Did someone go get Connie and Charles..."
"Rollo and Delilah. And someone else is with them too..." Harrison said as Delilah stepped into the kitchen and walked straight to the island as Rollo, Connie, Charles and August walked into the room. Chip went straight to Connie and took her in his arms. She planted a kiss on his lips and he said, "I missed you..."
Rollo said, "That's sickening... It's been a few hours... A few hours apart and you two are romantically involved?"
"We have been since Jersey," Connie said softly.
"That's fucking nasty," August said and shook her head as Charles walked around the island and Harrison got up from the island and he said, "Charles..." giving the teenager a hug. August cut suspicious eyes as Charles sighed and said, "Harry..."
"Will things like this ever stop happening?" August asked and Rollo, Delilah and Harrison all told her no at once. August smiled as she shook her head and Harrison patted Charles on the shoulder as he separated from the boy, looking toward August. She asked what he wanted and he simply smiled before saying, "I have never felt energy like yours... I have had a grasp of your power for a long time now. I'm certain I knew of you when you released in New York but I have felt you for nearly ten years now... I still don't know what it means."
"Have you ever felt someone that wasn't released?" Rollo asked.
"Felt someone sealed? No, no way. I'd have thought it impossible if not for August. With her as an exception, it is still pretty unlikely. I would have to feel this again in order to change my idea on it. It still seems rather unlikely to ever happen again. I don't know what she is..."
August smiled slightly and Chip said, "Oh, so now you're okay with being the odd-man-out? You're done running...?"
"I'm coming to terms with it..." August said. "After the garden I just needed to be with Charles. When I entered the hotel room he was just waiting for me. It was almost as if he knew I was coming. He was standing no more than a foot away from the spot I moved to. I knew someone would come for Charles and Connie."
"Made sense to me," Delilah said. "Now get out of here. All of you need some rest."
"You're right," August said and took Charles hand. "I'm going to shower and I'll have Charles in the room with me. I'll see all of you later. Goodnight..."
The others said their greetings and began to leave the kitchen as Rollo said, "Chip and Connie-don't shake the house."
August said, "That's disgusting, Rollo..."
"The house is just big enough where we won't," Chip added.
"See," Rollo added, "I should keep my fucking mouth shut..."
As the commotion moved down the hall Delilah giggled and Harrison said, "You're much happier..."
Delilah held on to a smile as she slapped Harrison on the shoulder and said, "Because I have hope."

"And a very merry Christmas to you too my friend." He told her ruffling her hair. She slapped his hand away and glared at him. "What the hell do you want?" She asked him. Sleggar considered for a moment making another joke but decided that if he did she would simply slam the door in his face and then he wouldn't have a sparring partner. "Alright well I need a partner to help me get a better understanding of my powers, the thing is I don't know how to activate them properly. Well that is I can't activate them without a little help. Remember the last two fights I was in? Well I couldn't summon my sword without the shades being present or being beaten for a bit. More accurately half to death, what I need from you is wolfy. He's pure energy right? Well if that's the case then he might be similar enough to the shades to force my powers to activate. So what I'm asking you to do is something every girl dreams of. Will you beat me half to death? So I can use my powers?" He asked gripping her hand and giving her a cheesy hero smile.

"Well, that's okay. I don't have Taskmaster around to explain my powers to me..." Sleggar said.
"What...?"
"Taskmaster... From Marvel comics... Has photographic reflexes..." Sleggar said, extending his arms as if he expected Daniella to catch on.
She shook her head slowly with a faint smile and Sleggar sighed, lowering his head. As their gazes met once more Daniella said, "I want to help you, Sleggar. I do. But I just can't get Wolfy to attack unprovoked. Without the initial brandishing of your blade I'd be as useless to you as a chill pill would be to August."
Sleggar laughed dryly and said, "It's okay. I understand where you're coming from. But this itching under my skin-I can feel the energy there. I just don't know how to make it do what I want."
"Well, Wolfy won't do what I want him to do either. I feel like I'm missing something. And he won't just tell me things. I have to ask him. And I fear that I'm not asking him the right questions."
"Why not just ask him a bunch of different things and see what he says?" Sleggar said.
"I don't know Sleggar," Daniella said, rolling her head in cadence with her words. "He just seems so annoyed with me sometimes. I think he wants me to be stronger before he helps me."
"What do you mean?"
'I'm so weak and...timid. i think he wants me to be able to stand up for myself but I've never been able to. But that's why I need a power like this. It suits me. I don't want to bring harm to anyone..."
Sleggar said, "But that may be the key," as he stepped away from the door. "Just think about Liu Kang in the Mortal Kombat movies..."
"Okay," Daniella said and closed the door. She smiled for a second but that smile faded. She flung the door open and said, "I don't know who Liu...Kang...is-"
Sleggar was gone. "Oh, fuck your games, Sleggar." She slammed the door.

This was going to be another wrong place-right time situations that he should have gracefully bowed out of. It just wasn't in him to do so. There was no way that these two fresh releases were going to stop this Shade. Daath wasn't just going to let them die either.
The girl, though encompassing a formidable strength, would probably wave her sword around like a madman-the same as she had at the train station. And the young man, though belting out powerful bursts of modified sound energy, would probably tire himself out before he could learn to channel the energy more efficiently and blow the Shade to pieces without bringing down Tokyo Tower in the process. There was still the fact that neither of them could teleport, become invisible or cause enough of a disturbance for all of them to get away unseen. Actually, that wasn't true. A large enough explosion of sound could kick up enough debris to offer a veil that would allow them to escape. That mattered not-Daath could get the two of them out.
The Shade-tossed against the base of the tower-was quick to get to its feet. These things were resilient, they didn't go down easily. But it all depended on if the Shade's meal had offered it enough nourishment. Before the battle could really commence the Shade may have just tore open a fissure in space-time and returned to its own dimension. It was impossible to know. The Shade's escape was actually a favorable outcome. It was better than the possibility of two dead and a battle at the base of Tokyo Tower. It seemed as if the Shade wanted to fight. Daath, watching from afar, said, "I don't like this..."
The Shade was cracking its left arm into place when it looked toward the two releases and slowly began walking toward the two of them. The girl was powerful for a release but the young man seemed to have terrified himself with his own burst of powers. That tended to be a normal reaction. Daath was terrified the first time he dropped a milligram of antimatter energy into a Shade's body as well. Just that much of the stuff could cause so much energy to be released that a Shade would be ripped to shreds. A few grams of antimatter could cause a 18 kiloton explosion as it came into contact with matter, as the two particles would annihilate one another. It would be like dropped another Little Boy on Nagasaki-except this was Tokyo.
All Daath needed to do was get close enough to the Shade and land a blow that would allow him to drop just a little bit of antimatter into the Shade's body and they could watch the fireworks. The Shade's atmospheres usually contained the subsequent explosion.
The energy was volatile, uncontrollable at times-and even Daath was afraid of it. The left arm of his RedBull Racing jacket was cut at the elbow, hemmed, and pinned at the shoulder with buttons-as he'd lost his left arm in an antimatter explosion nearly ten years prior. That didn't matter anymore...
Daath exploded past the running-screaming-crying pedestrians as the Shade began to make its way toward the two. It caught sight of Daath and stopped, forming its blade. Daath came to a stop near the two releases and said, "My name is Daath. If you'll help me destroy this thing I'll tell you everything I can about what you two are now. Just don't destroy the tower. There are people that I don't want to have to explain that to."
The girl began to say something but Daath politely cut her off and said, "There is no time for questions. When this thing is dead I will help you." With that, Daath was gone, disappearing in a writhing haze of black and red dust and smoke. He reappeared behind the Shade, exploding from a dance of the mist in mid-air, driving his left foot into the Shade's back. The monster stumbled forward but quickly turned back with a swipe of its sword but Daath was gone again, reappearing above the monster, driving down upon it with a powerful punch to the back of its head. He began to teleport once more but the Shade screeched, opened its wings and released a spherical blast of energy. Daath was torn away and hurled into the grass beyond the Shade.

He was in a dilemma. He needed to train-that was true. He also needed to train with the people that he planned on destroying. What better way to face an enemy than by knowing all there is to know of what they are capable? He needed to get rid of the Shades; perhaps letting his targets live as long as he needed them. In that sense, he felt as if he obtained a mode of control. They didn't know that he had plans to annihilate them all-drawing them into his plot and eviscerating them one-by-one. That gave him the upper-hand. Dreaded by some, coveted by others-the element of surprise was his. But what if another was concocting a fiendish plot to take them all down from the inside out? Would he get a blade or fireball or pinecone to the back before he could find a way to topple August, Daniella and that Goddamn Edana? The bitch was weak-she didn't know what power she held. To emit lightning...just a destructive force-that would have been the kicker. There was still Sleggar. If the moron could ever stop telling Mortal Kombat jokes (though funny) for ten minutes he may have grasped the true power in his blade. Rollo's ability within his blade was formidable but his blade had little in the way of destructive power. Yes, it could deflect other blades of energy but to have Sleggar's blade-one of energy....just energy. They were all going to be a problem. But August....oh, sweet August-what power she held. She'd rammed a SUV down the throat of a Shade and walked all over the fiend before it made a hasty retreat. It was scary. She'd been able to do the work of all of them combined and do it more efficiently. When he'd been in the car with Delilah the woman said that she was increasing exponentially, expanding at an unprecedented geometric rate. Whatever the hell all of that shit meant, Rollo didn't like it. It sounded like bantering pish-tosh to him but all-in-all it meant that she would simply be able to think about destroying a Shade and the battle would be over before the thing could move. But that would take months, maybe years.
That was only the beginning of the barrel of monkeys. Alasdair could control water in great torrents. Rollo witnessed the devastation left behind by tsunamis and hurricanes. Rollo didn't even like to swim.
Regardless, it was time to smile in their faces. He pushed away from the banister, formed his blade and with a turn and a slash he was gone, back in Paris, all peachy-keen. The rouse was on. He loved being bad. Especially when no one knew...

Ato looked away from what he was doing and said, "Yes, please, relax," as he moved to Anezka and began tending to the wound on her forehead. "What did you get into?"
"Saska and Jared are dead. They were simply under-trained..."
Ato made a strange sound with his lips signalling disapproval before he said, "That makes very little sense. Jared could move mountains if he put his mind to it."
"Indeed he could have. Saska died first and he lost his grip on his powers, blew himself up-almost killed me. The media will surely say that it was a terrorist at-" Anezka paused as she noticed that James was staring at her intently. She giggled and kicked her feet before saying, "I'm so sorry, James. I'm supposed to be telling you what the hell is going on; aren't I?"
"Well, I would like that..."
"Okay, I guess I can do that. You came this far with me...not that it was far at all. Anyway; listen-"
"Alright..."
"I'm an Edge, as I explained, and you're an Aura. We call you that because your kind is wrapped in a powerful force field of energy that offers varying effects. In your case, your abilities feel psychic in nature. Some Auras can bend light around themselves, set the air on fire at will or even set their own bodies on fire. The effects vary greatly. Powers are not ever replicated. Once a power has died with a user, it will never be seen again. I am an Edge and I can manifest a sword. I don't know where it comes from-I don't really care either."
James looked dumfounded and Ato laughed before saying, "I have seen that look plenty times before. You should have seen what Anezka here did back in 87 when she first got her abilities."
James shook his head and said, "Eighty-seven as in nineteen eighty-seven?"
"Yes," Ato said, "she has had her powers for that long."
"But how-" James said to Ato and then to Anekza he said, "You look no older than me!"
"Technically I'm 48 but I was only 24 when I got my powers and I'm pretty certain that I'm only 26-maybe 27 now."
James simply shook his head before saying, "So we age-"
"-very slowly." Ato finished. "And you'll never be sick again. You can only die if you are beheaded or drained of blood. That is a Shade's choice way of killing us. They obtain our knowledge and the blood heals them. I know this is a lot to take in but you haven't much time to come to terms with this."

"Charles, you can't do that."
"Why?"
"Because...well it's because we have different parts and you don't need to see me in my underwear..."
"Why? I have..."
"I know you have but to do something that you shouldn't doesn't give you permission or the right to continue to do that thing that you should not have done in the first place..."
"Why is it wrong...?"
"Just...because it is. It is just wrong. Okay? Will you just let it be and leave it alone?"
"I'll leave it alone. But not you. Put clothes on, Rainy."
"Can you leave the room so I can get out of bed...?"
"I slept in bed. You have underwear on."
"Charles, I know that but I had on a robe and I took it off when you were sleep. I was under the covers."
"Oh." was all that Charles said.
"So can you get my robe from on the chair over there?" August said and pointed. Charles walked to the chair, grabbed the robe and brought it to August, handing it to her limply. She snatched it from him and shook her head. As he stared at her expectantly she made a round-about motion with her left index finger and said, "Turn around kid..." Charles turned around and with his back to her, August got up and slipped the robe on. As she pulled the belt tight she said, "Okay, I'm done."
Charles turned and looked at August inquisitively before saying, "Not so different. Underwear or robe or nothing means nothing to anyone..."
"You just don't understand, Charles." August said and rubbed the boys head, ruffling his hair. he tore his head away, slapping her hand away and he turned away before saying, "Make me food. I don't know where anything is in this big old place and I can't find a thing..."
"Oh, now you want to talk and demand..."
"What...?"
"When i needed you to talk you wanted to build Eiffel Towers and destroy them instead of talking to me."
"Strange people..." Charles said and he turned to August, frowning.
August took a knee in front of the young man and took his wrists in her hands. "I wish you understood things like I did. I wish you could tell me things..."
"I do tell you. When I'm hungry I tell you. I'm hungry, Rainy..."
"Oh, Charles." August said, "You break my heart sometimes." Of course, she needed him to understand this most of all but he just stared at her, not understanding how sad he was making her. She shook her head and said, "Okay, Charles, let's go get you some food."
Delilah and Chip were sitting at the island in the kitchen and it seemed as if they'd been friends forever. There was something about Chip that Delilah seemed to like and he seemed to enjoy her cynicism. Connie was fishing around in the cupboard when August walked by, slapped her on the butt and went to the refrigerator, getting yogurt for Charles. She greeted Chip and Delilah when she went to Charles, who was simply staring out the doors leading to the backyard, and handed him the yogurt. "I need a spoon. I eat with my fingers?"
"I'm not letting you eat with your fingers..." August said as she walked away from him, finding a spoon after Delilah pointed out the proper drawer. She called to Charles and he came to her, taking the spoon and walking away without a thank you or another word. August shook her head with a sigh and sat at the island as Chip said, "having a hard time with him?"
"He's being a smart ass. I know it's not his fault but I wish he could understand when he hurt my feelings or when I just need him to be..."
"Normal?" Delilah finished.
With another long, sad sigh, August said, "Yes. I wish he could just be normal for a little while. I want to just ask him what's going on in his head sometimes. I know he's got a lot going on up there but he can't just tell me."
"It will be okay, August." Connie said as she took a seat next to Chip, taking his hand.
"I hope so," August said somberly. "he just says the wrong thing sometimes..."

Sleggar jerked awake on the couch, he didn't even realize he had passed out. He had been sweating. "Great now I feel like a genuine neck beard." he grumbled to himself. He looked up to see Charles standing there looking at him as if he had just remembered something. "morning kiddo." Sleggar greeted cheerily. Charles cocked his head and stared at him. Sleggar couldn't help but feel weirded out. Before he could speak Charles cleared the distance between them and placed his hand on Sleggar's heart. "Goodbye friend." Charles told him. "You leaving already you just got here." Sleggar said simply. Charles didn't move though he just stood there hand on Sleggar. His expression was pained. Sleggar stood up and picked Charles up. "Come on kid smile a bit your killing me here!" he said loudly before placing Charles on his shoulders. He walked to the kitchen with Charles, kicking the door. "I'm the juggernaut bitch!" he shouted as he entered the room. Everyone turned to see the scene he was causing. Charles sat on Sleggar's shoulders quietly clutching Sleggar's hair for balance.

"Nothing left to do today. We're heading back to the hotel," Tobias started to walk down the street as he walked.
"Good. All is much to exciting," she responded, in halting english. She was practicing, though Tobias couldn't honestly say she was doing much better. Her grammar was still terrible. He felt bad correcting her, though, since she already knew what she said was wrong. She just needed more time. And her problems were not Tobias' problem, he remembered. She was along to help him, not the other way around.
~
The next day dawned in yellows and reds. A welcome change for Tobias, who had stayed up all night reading his Prague map - finding all the locations and setting a route for the day. His eyes were red, inflamed by the constant flickering of the fluorescent bulbs. When sunlight fell on his map, he turned, surprised by how fast time had flown whilst he was deep in thought. He realized he had an unlit cigarette in his mouth, and didn't know how long he had had it there. He fished through his pockets for a lighter, and found one in the pocket of his jacket, which had been flung over the back of his chair. He turned on the little clock radio on the table, and leaned back, trying to light the cigarette. The flint was wearing down on his bic - it took him ten or fifteen tries to light his smoke. He tossed the bid into the waste bin, and leaned back, listening to the news. It was in Czech, which he didn't understand more than a hundred words of. But he caught some occasionally. Smrt, vrazda, and other grim topics were staggeringly common. He wondered if his incident was being reported. Gunfire near Old Town would probably make the news.
An hour later he had showered, woken his sister, and gotten onto the street. He poured the gasoline from the red plastic carrier he had bought at the gas station into his stolen Trabant, which he had found with the keys in the front seat just outside of the blast radius. From there he headed to a internet cafe, and started reading recent news, looking for other unsolved cases and inexplicable events. Paris seemed to be a bit of a hotspot at the moment. He read through lunchtime while his sister read Goethe's "Die Leiden des jungen Werthers" for the hundredth time. It was her favorite book for some reason. Tobias had hated Goethe in school.
The Empire State Building had been destroyed? How had he missed this? He was stopped in his research by his sister, bugging him for lunch. He payed the cashier, sitting behind her desk. She was almost legendarily ugly. He headed off towards a subways, which he had found on his road map when planning the day yesterday.

"Good morning sleeping beauty" Chip said as Alex stood up
"Once again, what the hell " Alasdair looked around at everyone in the room most with big grins on their faces, Sleggar almost rolling with laughter trying not to toss Charles off of his shoulders. "Why did no one decide to wake me up when I was happened upon asleep and drooling on the counter, I know some one had to see me." He lectured while trying to flatten a massive cowlick in his hair. "Well you just looked so damn cute laying there drooling up a storm that we decided to let you sleep a little more" Chip quipped.
"Bite me" Alasdair retorted sitting down at the counter and popping his neck. "Hey August didn't know you were here." he said noticing her in the kitchen "guess I figured you would show up again." Alex seemed to have forgotten his initial anger at being woken up by an Acme Corporation Sleggar alarm clock. "So where's everyone else, and what time is it?" he asked everyone.

As August walked off toward the hall, Chip made a solemn face and Sleggar asked, "What's eating her?"
"Charles..." Connie said.
"He was eating yogurt," Sleggar said.
Chip shot a condemning look toward him and said, "Charles' affliction is giving August troubles again. I think sometimes she just wishes for him to be a normal kid."
"I can understand that," Sleggar said as he watched Charles walk off to stare out of the window. "So is calling his autism an 'affliction' a family thing?"
"Yeah," Chip said, "It started with his parents. I guess it made them feel better about it-helped them cope. But Charles is not so different from other children. I just wish we could understand him some times. He can be inappropriate and a little coarse at times but in our current situation we just need him to talk. He hasn't said as much lately as I've grown accustom to but I think he's adjusting; dealing with so many new faces. You can't pry answers out of him either. If he doesn't feel comfortable enough to speak then he won't. I don't even think he will understand the importance of some of the things that he sees. That would probably hinder him from overriding his discomfort to tell us when our situation has turned for the worst. What he won't say he will build if he can. He will more readily build what he can than to stress himself out to speak. What comes out may only be fragments and useless to us.
"He doesn't enjoy the company of many. He likes Edana and Connie a lot-though he seems to be awfully fond of Harrison."
When Chip turned his attention to the older man he said, "Well, I have known him-rather his fragile mind-for years. He calls to me some times and I speak with what works. What is there works well."
"So even his mind as a clairvoyant is afflicted?" Connie asked.
'Quite. But what works is much more affective than mine or yours. What is afflicted cannot muddle the genius mind that is in working order." Harrison sighed and said, "But it is a shame that our abilities will not cure what has already ailed the mind and body. If all of the pieces were in place then Charles' mind would be a great asset."
With that, the group broke into small talk-leaving Charles' affliction behind but it was in the back of all of their minds.
"How about some television, Charles," Chip said amidst the myriad conversations. The young man turned around and with a slight frown he walked from the kitchen area to the small den beyond. As Chip came to the back of the couch, Charles sat on the couch and blinked his eyes hard. When the television flashed on Chip said, "Well, I'll be damned. He turned the television on without touching the remote."
"What in the world," Delilah said as she got up and came over to Chip's side. With each blink of Charles' eyes the channel changed until he found a news station with English subtitles and he settled back, saying nothing. "Well I would not have though that he could do that..."
"Aren't you a Clairvoyant?"
"Well, yes, but I can only pick up on what I see in dreams and visions. I have very little psychic energy. I use my power as a guide-telling the others where and when to go."
Harrison simply smiled and took a crunchy bit of his bagel before, speaking past the bread, he said, "His mind is a mystery. Even as a masker I can't see past all of the junk in his brain."
"Don't speak with your mouth full," Sleggar said quietly, quickly, and turned his attention as he got up and walked over, sitting on the couch with the kid. "May as well tune into the carnage we've all caused."

Adrian removed a pick from his pocket and faced the creature as it refocused its attention on them. Their helper seemed to have been thrown out of the battle momentarily which meant that Adrian didn't have to worry about friendly fire. "I always wanted to play a concert. Well, for those of us about to rock I raise my mighty ax." he said to himself and strung a D minor cord. Once again the sound was amplified and blasted into the creature; however, it was ready this time and braced itself with by digging its blade into the dirt. "Well just one isn't going to work I guess. Should have known. Guess I'll have to try more drastic measures."
Adrian began playing again, deciding to go with the longest solo he knew, Final Fantasy boss music. He wasn't sure if it would work, but it was better than the alternative. Cord after cord ripped forward and the longer he played the more power drew forth from him until the sound distortion was visible in the air itself. The ground seemed to rip apart like a tornado was driving through it and park benches went fly every which way. The creature was torn from its hold on the ground and once again flung across the park, but Adrian kept playing. He'd already seen that thing get up from that once before. As he reached the high point of his solo the air seemed to shimmer and warp as Shiba Park seemed to be ripped apart by invisible wave.
"A-chan!" Yuko called out to Adrian. "Stop, its too much!" But it was too no avail. Adrian's mind was only focused on one thing and that was destroy this thing. He shredded through rift after rift with more skill than he had remembered having and his hands seemed to have mind of their own and formed cords seamlessly. The ground under the tower began to shake and their new combatant called something out that he couldn't hear. A tremor shook through the ground and their was a ungodly groan as if the very Earth itself was crying out in pain as the tower rocked on its foundation and with Adrians last cord fell. Only then did Adrian snap out of his trance and see that the creature had long been smeared against the tower and seemingly split apart by the vibration of its molecules under his relentless assualt. Then all of his spent energy seemed to hit him at once and like the tower the world spun around him and his vision blurred as the tower crashed down. "That's going to cost a lot of student loans," he said as followed suit and the trembling earth rushed up to meet him.
((Hope this is ok. I know Daath said not to, but I figured he wouldn't have enough control to tone it down lol. No pun intended.))

βAlright, today is a new day. Iβm in a new house and Iβm going to have a new outlook on this whole monsters wanting to eat us and end the world thing. Yea, weβll all train and get better then itβll all go back to normal.β Taking a deep breath after her pep talk, she then began looking around for anyone else who was awake while she tried to keep the positive thoughts flowing. Oh who am I kidding, weβre all going to die horribly painful deaths like Teal and the world is going to be implode! At that moment she heard the sounds of a television set and turned a corner to make her way into the room. βWell good morning sunshines.β Spotting her brother standing behind the couch and beside Chip, she made her way over and sat on an arm of the sofa. βSo, what do they have to say about us?β She asked aloud as her eyes stayed on the television, watching the now all too familiar sight of doomsday type news running.
