The mound only covered about 60 feet of the plain upon which it sat, it was greatly overgrown with grass, weeds and several small trees. The interior however had a smooth rocky ceiling with only a few roots hanging down from it, otherwise it looked as if it had been carved out of the small hill. Although it was still relatively early in the day the mound was almost completely dark on the inside. The overgrowth of bushes and weeds guarding the entrance contributed to the pitch black before them as they walked further into the mound. About 36 feet into the interior the ground began to slope downward at an incredible angle, with his trusty lighter always at hand Walter illuminated the way ahead of them, revealing a series of earthen stairs. A mounting sense of dread rushed over Walter as the four of them carefully made their way down the long winding staircase. There was far too much going on at the time ans so the four scholars made no comments on the intricately carved set of stairs and the fine excavation of the narrow downward passageway. Under normal circumstances there would have been much discussion of such matters, but now the only thing that was on their minds was securing the sword before the Nazi's had a chance to claim it for themselves.
