It was exactly what Nair was expecting, which meant he was having a terrible time. It didn't help that all they were serving was champagne and wine. The north was known for its liqueur, especially its whiskey, so try as he might Nair was finding himself unable to get the slightest bit drunk. At most, he was a bit tipsy, which was almost worse in his opinion.

Of course, there were plenty of people to talk to, and many of them were quite curious as to what was going on in the mountains. Nair put on his diplomatic smile, happy to answer all of their questions, knowing that this was only for one night. Only one night, he had to keep reminding himself.

When alone, he often found himself wondering what things would be like if Jaden were still alive. She always loved this sort of thing. Every where they went she wanted to dress up and go to these parties, and, with her, they weren't so bad. Hell, he even enjoyed them to a degree. They would be married now, and she would be pestering him about his drinking, playfully of course considering he knew full well she could throw them back almost as well as he could. And she would constantly throw him into conversations with other people just to vex him, but it wouldn't matter. Any pain she caused him during the party she would more than relieve later that night, in their personal after party.

Maybe that was why Nair was constantly going after women now. Despite being in such a formal environment, Nair felt himself wondering what the different noble women were wearing underneath their dresses, which ones were prudes and which ones were whores. He had no intention of leaving this kingdom without a good taste of its...culture. It was a conflict though. No number of these women could fill the hole left by Jaden, despite how much he tried.

Even now, he could picture Jaden, such a social girl, being the center of attention in whatever group she went to. Her dress would be blue, ice blue, her favorite color, and it would be just the perfect combination of formal and revealing to make her look both beautiful and sexy simultaneously. She would look at him in a way that she knew drove him absolutely crazy, then turn away leaving him begging for more. No other girl could do that to him--not a one.

As far as the guests go, it seemed to be an interesting mix. Every kingdom seemed to have some kind of representation here. The party reminded a person that there was life outside of their own kingdom. There even seemed to be some peasant man walking around fully armed for some reason. In fact, there seemed to be a few people who felt the need to bring their weapons to a social event. That always confused Nair, why a man would do that. It's like, why? Are you really expecting something to happen, or is it a pride issue? It seemed that every formal event there was a handful of these winners who seemed to feel the need to point out to everyone in attendance that they happen to carry a sword when they're not sipping champagne and eating biscuits in a room full of strangers. Nair, personally, felt no need to prove to anyone that he had a large penis by carrying his sword. For one, he was a good enough warrior without it. Two, there was enough water in this room that could easily turn into ice and then, well, one doesn't need a sword when one's enemy has an ice cycle through his head.

It also began to bother Nair that he still hadn't the slightest clue just what this function was all about. His father either didn't know himself, or refused to tell him for whatever reason. It was rather annoying. Everyone else seemed to have a good idea, like they were on their toes with anticipation, expecting something, maybe an announcement of some kind. Nair, on the other hand, was clueless. As far as he knew, this was just an ambassador trip. Royals like to think they run the world, and like to get together with other royals and talk about running the world, and that's all Nair was led to believe this was. On the trip down he was constantly wondering just what he was going to hear about the other kingdoms.

Maybe it was just loyalty, but everyone liked to argue, friendly or otherwise, why this or that kingdom was better. "We have this kind of army." "Oh yeah? Well we have this kind of army." "Well, your economy is inefficient." "Not a chance, it's your economy that can use some work." And so on and so forth. It god old really quick. Nair didn't give a damn about what army has what, to be honest. No army could invade the north, that much he knew, and that much was enough for him, for now. No one could wage war in those mountains who didn't know the mountains. Besides, with a group of Ymir Nair could manipulate the mountain glaciers to close off any pass he wanted, and to cause avalanches on any army. No, the mountains were impenetrable. So let these southern folk have their armies, it meant nothing. He was confident enough to trust that his own men could outfight any army these weaklings in the south could muster. Damn though, maybe that was just him being loyal, too.

Just when he thought his boredom would be his death, he heard something that snapped him back into reality. "Do you have any ale?" The voice, a female's voice, asked. Nair turned his head to see a stunning woman in what looked to be a dress made out of large butterfly wings, with mesmerizing designs on her arms. Knowing that this was probably his only chance to have a decent conversation, Nair grabbed himself a glass of champagne and walked over to her.

"It's absolute shit, yes, but if you drink a gallon or two you may start to feel a little bit tipsy." A woman who requests ale when champagne is being served, Nair had learned through experience, is not the woman you pass up. Nair smiled and tilted his head towards her in acknowledgement. "I plan on raiding the kitchen later for the good booz, if you want in."
