“Our case,” he replied in answer to Dean’s question. He cast his gaze towards the other box, “That one’s for you. I got big sis; I guess that means you got the little one.”

Mason turned to look at the other detective, who was leaning casually against the counter, his arms folded across his chest. He was tall, about 6”1; Mason estimated at a glance. He was in his mid-twenties with green eyes and brown hair. He looked pretty calm, leaning against that counter. Mason wondered if that totally relaxed expression would still grace his face once he saw the case they had been given. Mason was fairly confident, he was a good detective and he knew it. Usually, cases didn’t faze him. But this time he couldn’t help the slight inkling of worry creeping into his mind.

Mason’s eye’s flicked back over the sheets of paper from his own box that he’d already laid out. On paper, the case looked simple. Befriend the girls, infiltrate their lives and prove them guilty or not, as the case may be. But Mason had been leafing through the evidence, profiles and news reports for almost an hour now and the more he seemed to go through them, the harder the case seemed to become. He was known in the police force for receiving a case, figuring out the solution and closing it. Simple as that. But this looked harder than anything he’d ever done before. If the evidence they had was true then these girls were extremely dangerous, very clever and fiercely loyal. These girls were sharp, they didn’t miss a thing. They were thorough and professional, never slipping up. And they had their public image as glamorous party girls so chiselled that it would take something big to mess with it. The more he looked at the case, the more evident it became that the solution would not be a simple one and the process he would have to go through to reach it would be long. One slip up and it was game over.

Mason took the final bite of his piece of toast and locked the black iPhone he had been given for this job before turning back to the other detective, “I’m Mason Lamberg, by the way. I’m a detective in Indianapolis. How about you?”
