He stayed in the percussion room, listening to the announcements through the open door. When he heard everyone leave he took out his mallets, thrumming them on his knees to get his wrists warmed up for the playing. He then got up and went back out into the band room; it was empty except for the pit. They only went outside some days and if they did, they never had to run because they were hauling the huge instruments outside. A few of the ones who had heard him before class glanced at him. He put his head down, hair in his face and went over to his set of bells. The percussion instructor set them going on a few warm ups then they started working on the music for this season’s marching show.
