Matthew stretched out to grasp his hat off the ground. He ran his right hand back through his brown hair to smooth it down before he removed his badge and set his cap upon his head. The whole time, there was a scowl on his face. He didn’t like the idea of not arresting a criminal. Reassemblage, bio-matter, hero…huh. She sounded crazy.

Officer Cassidy had her pistol trained upon Jane as she approached her and the other officer. Resting a hand upon his knee, with a soft and almost lazy groan, Matthew stood to his feet and pinned his badge back onto…what was left of his shirt. There were black, crispy holes in the blues and greys of his attire. Self-defense…

Matthew glanced at the unconscious form of The Shocker and then at the emotionless girl standing before him. The longer he stared, the more he felt creeped out. She was like one of those glass dolls that only crazy women collected and thought were adorable. The cop had too much pride, and he remained silent as he decided to march past Jane to The Shocker. She said she would escape and since she had done it before, he didn’t doubt her claim.

He unbuckled one of the leather compartments on his belt and removed the handcuffs. He locked them about The Shocker’s wrists and then forcefully removed the gauntlets from his hands. If they had been attached to his suit, well, they weren’t anymore.

A few minutes before the cavalry would arrive, Matthew spoke loudly over his shoulder, “You might want to leave. My friends won’t be too happy to see you, and if you have no intention to surrender peacefully, then I rather not be arsed in tryin’ to catch you in front of them.”

Officer Cassidy lowered her pistol away from Jane, regarding the girl in confusion. So much had happened in the past thirty minutes. She felt lost on how to react to the situation. She had just seen a dead girl revive and Miller light up like some science project. She didn’t even know if she knew him anymore. Was he the same man she had lunch with or was that all a big show?
