Jay watched as Lacey got out her notebook that she was forever writing in, so he leaned back on the step behind and allowed his eyes to flutter closed. He had set himself up for a less talky and more peaceful remainder of lunch before she mentioned his guitar. He laughed lazily, she was right, he always had his guitar with him, it felt weird not having it with him.

“It’s a tragedy Lace, one of the strings broke and I didn’t have time to fix it up before school started. I was forced to leave it in my room.” He replied very melodramatically as he grinned, though keeping his eyes closed as he talked. “I think I’m having withdrawal symptoms,” he added on sarcastically but more quietly, trailing off at the end and allowing the peaceful silence to engulf him once again.

Jay loved hanging out with Lacey for this exact reason. He could get along with and chat with anybody, but with Lacey they didn’t have to be doing anything in particular. They didn’t even have to be talking and he still enjoyed himself. You can have fun and exciting moments with anyone, it’s the people that make the ordinary and borderline boring moments enjoyable that are worth keeping around. For him that person was Lacey and anyone would be hard pressed to beat her out of that position, not impossible though.

“But hey I’ll make you a deal,” Jay spoke up after a few minutes, knowing she had wanted to hear him play. “You finish up whatever you’re writing in that notebook now and I promise to fix up my guitar after school and then I’ll play something for you.” He continued, his eyes remaining closed, after a few moments though he nudged her gently and spoke again, adding to what he had just said. “Something new. Do we have a deal?”

He didn't have anything new, she had heard everything he had multiple times before, but she didn't know that. For all she knew he could have heaps of new stuff that he had been working on over summer. Of course if she took the deal she'd find out later but that was later, Jay could deal with stuff that's later, later. Besides she could never stay angry at him.
