The cab pulled up to the curb and Elise looked out at the building. This was exactly the type of place she would have stayed once upon a time. The cabbie gruffly told her the cost of the fare twice before Elise reached into her purse to count out the correct amount. Handing the change to the driver, Elise stepped out of the cab, closing the door as it pulled away. She’d asked around town, and all of the answers she’d been given had pointed her here. Taking a deep breath, she straightened her purse on her shoulder, wiping sweaty palms down over the legs of her Aschen military issue cargo pants. “This is stupid, Elise…” she muttered, but still she began walking into the building, her hand resting protectively on the pistol at her hip as she entered.
Of course, the idea that she was walking, armed, into the Invictus headquarters while wearing a blue polo with an Aschen military patch above her left breast did not cross her mind. Elise had one objective on her mind. Sometimes it is best to rip a bandaid off quickly.
Stepping up to the front desk, Elise would have tried for a smile, but the expression was foreign. Instead, she stood at attention and looked at the attendant, her hand on the butt of her weapon, still holstered harmlessly at her side. “Where would I find Kroger Haggai?”
