"Why wouldn't I understand? It is not like you ran away from your parents, or you were such a freak that they put you up for adoption." I look at her face while she texted, distracted by things I shouldn't be thinking about. I didn't even hear her call my name, but only remembered after the fact.

I don't remember the impact. Only the blackness. In an instant, my ears were ringing, I could not see, and was oddly at ease. It only lasted two or three seconds, but in that time, I had enough time to think about several questions. First of all, was I dead? Was Ruby dead? What caused our death? Would my parents care? My mom might. My dad probably wouldn't even notice. Ruby's mom would care. She would cry at her funeral. I would if I were able. Losing Ruby would be a sad thing indeed; even if I were dead, I would cry at her funeral. I hoped she was alive.

My thoughts were clear and articulate, until the blackness subsided. once I started to see and hear, my head became clouded. I was confused, and could not think straight. It took a few more seconds, but finally, I could talk, "Ruby.... Ruby...." I rubbed my head, and looked around. A car hit us, head on. Other than a headache, I was fine. I looked over at Ruby, she was bleeding from her head, "Ruby, look at me." I say loudly and firmly. "Are you O.K.? Tell me what your mom's name is. What year is it? Who were we visiting at the hospital?" I gave her time to answer in between questions, and examined her face. No bruising around her eyes, or behind her ears, so she probably did not have a concussion. I tear my shirt up and put it to her forehead, wiping off the blood, then a fresh strip around her head to put a little pressure on the wound. "Are you hurt anywhere else? Please tell me, I need to check the other car." I hold her shoulders, and brush her cheek as I talk. "You are going to be O.K.. If nothing else is wrong with you, then just stay here and call the ambulance. can you do that for me, Jewel? I promise you will be O.K."

OOC: I have never been in a car crash, but I have been blown up and I imagine the feeling is similar.
