There was a flurry of excitement as people poured in. Papers were being handed out, exclamations exclaimed, questioning questions proposed and complaints registered. Alumaruk huffed from between her tusks. Her heart beat like a heavy fist in her chest. Everything was a dull roar in her ears.

The orc took a contract and began to fill it out. Her shaky hands made her script nearly illegible. Plus the writing implements were like tiny toothpicks in her hands. Alum chose a four month contract. There was no time limit on success.

The orc understood the warnings, but most of what the human said passed unheard through her ears. What Alum was concerned with stood out brightly in her mind: “Magic hunting”. The orc was finally on the path toward finding magic. Whether she would be gifted with pay for supplying security or given the raw ore of magic itself, her goals were in sight. Alum felt a smile creep onto her face. Her excitement nearly matched her anxiety, but the commotion around her seriously dampened her spirits.

Alum finished signing all the work. She stood there with the papers held out stupidly in one hand. Alum’s mind turned inwards, to where the spirit nestled in a pocket of her consciousness. She sought the calm of meditation and wisdom. She sought the courage of orcs. She sought the peace of the plains.

The orc loved the beauty and energy of the human city, but like many strange things, she preferred to remember it in poetry. Alum could not stand living amongst such chaos. The disorder threatened to boil her brains. The little humans threatened to trip her every time she stepped.

She reached deeper, opened her mind to the spirit. Its power invaded every corner of her mind. Alum felt total calm. She would manage until they left the city. Unfortunately, the orc felt there would be much more to do and many people to meet before they’d pass through the gates on the way out.

Alumaruk sighed and shook the papers.

“Take them, human,” she garbled roughly, “I am ready to begin.”

And I am ready for a drink.
