Ada huffed, watching with a bit of irritation as James continued to chat up the new girl. He was always flirting with everyone, left and right so it wasn’t anything new but something about this woman really irked her. Why would he find this woman, above anyone else, intriguing? Was it because she was pretty? Ada squirmed on her stool and fingered the edge of her plaid shirt, suddenly self conscious of the way she was dressed. This was fuckin’ ridiculous; it wasn’t like she was trying to impress anybody! Right?

The longer she waited, the more uncomfortable she felt. These unwanted and unneeded emotions that were bubbling up were confusing. Never before had she needed anyone and never would she need anyone. Why pine for attention now when she knew how it would end? This dance had been danced many times before and would always stay the same.

Finally Ada decided that she was a big girl and could walk her own ass home as she’d done many times before. Why count on others when she knew better? So with a last look at the bar, Ada walked out the door as James finished talking with Lyndi. Once outside, Ada pulled her coat tightly around her to avoid the chill. She would say it was nice to finally get some fresh air but this was Detroit so there was no such thing.
