Amelia Neil

"I'm not lots of women. I'm Amelia, ADA and lover of cute clothes. How am I supposed to exude confidence in a glorified muumuu or pants with an elastic waist band?" It was only after her rant that she noticed his face and that his mind had obviously drifted off somewhere else. The low tension moment was suddenly riled back up again and she wasn't sure what to do. Talking about it would likely cause another argument and upset them both. She wondered if the rest of their lives were going to be like this, or at least for the next eighteen years; walking on eggshells, good moments going sour for little to no reason.

She laid there in the silence, contemplating what the future might hold for the two of them and the baby. Would they be the parents that argued all the time? Would they break up before he or she was even born?

Then there was the fact that their jobs both kept them busy, but more so than that was the types of people they both dealt with on a daily basis. Amelia fought to keep rapists, murderers and drug dealers off the streets, Jackson was front and center in the action that put those people in her courtroom. What if one of those people decided to make good on their threats? What if Jackson was hurt at work or killed? Her mind kept crawling back to those dark places.

The feel of his fingers through his hair comforted her and and she began to drift off, feeling how heavy her eyelids had become. Despite having slept a good portion of the day, she was still exhausted and she had a feeling that was going to become her new normal for the next few months. "I should go to bed. I have to wake up early." Amelia stated, her voice sounding half asleep, though she made no sign of getting up. In fact, her only movement was to curl in closer to him.

She had work tomorrow and she couldn't call in a second time. Even if she had to work less, there were still cases she had been assigned that needed to be taken care of and she'd be in a court room against one of the most difficult criminal defense lawyers in the city in just a few days. She had to get everything in order and she was pretty sure that there was a subpoena or two she had to acquire. All things that would have been done today, had she not called in sick.

After all of this was said and done, she would take on less cases even if it hurt her to do it. Maybe it would be a good thing, though. She would have a chance to reconnect with friends and Jackson. The idea was appealing, but she also loved her job. For so long she had chosen a career over anything else and she wasn't sure if she had the ability to do anything else.
