Alice did not want to be here. There was no possible way the girl would ever be baited, tricked, or willed into walking through the red painted door to a house she'd never been in, all to attend a high school party hosted by someone she couldn't remember the name of. In no way possible would she ever be forced into a crowded situation full of her drunk senior classmates, while head-ache wrenching electronic music played and the promise of people's morning regrets hung the air like a dark, forgotten cloud made up of disappointed parental tears.

She'd like to believe that, of course, but she didn't live in such a fanciful reality.

Instead, she lived in the reality where she loved her twin sister Kate too damn much. Alice would jump into a pit of snakes to help her if she had too – and that’s saying a hell of a lot. Thankfully (as some might put it), Kate hadn’t requested Alice to do such a drastic thing. Instead, all she asked was for Alice to come to this party so Kate could finish off a fight that had gotten her suspended from school earlier in the day. Alice didn’t condone this fight of course and had let Kate know that very fact. The last thing she wanted was for her sister to get into more trouble or to get hurt, yet she could understand why Kate felt the need to finish it. Even Alice would be angered if a girl had dumped their lunch tray on her like Brianna did Kate as if they were in a corny teen film. Besides, the twins would probably be moving to a new school fairly quick now anyways since Kate was suspended. It always followed, though nothing had been announced to them yet from their social workers. This was Kate’s last chance to confront the stereotypical mean girl, and Alice was going to be there to stop it if things went too far.

Looking out of her car’s window, Alice searched for a parking spot on the already loaded street after having dropped Kate off at the front of the house. She quickly grew to regret that decision, hoping to god that Kate wouldn’t find Brianna before Alice had a chance to go inside the house. She had a feeling that tonight was going to be stressful, but at least the picture-taking junky might get a couple of good shots. After all, there’s nothing quite like the sight of recklessly high and drunk teenagers all crammed together.

After finding a spot that was a little ways away from the house, Alice felt satisfied enough that no one would bother walking this far to trash her car if some kids decided that’s what they wanted to do for fun. The only other thing she loved as much as her sister was this very car. She’d bought the thing from a junkyard when she just turned sixteen. For a full year, she tried to find the best parts for the cheapest price and build the thing back up. Of course, she often enlisted the help of the various high school auto shop class’ for the harder and more complicated things she couldn’t just read up and learn about. It’s still wasn’t the best running vehicle, but she always knew how to fix It back up if it acted up.

Putting her car keys in her camera bag that doubled as a purse, the petite girl had to literally hop out of her car after double checking all the doors were locked. As she made her way down the street, she zipped up her jacket as the cool air hit her. She was probably going to regret wearing it as soon as she entered the inevitably warm house, but as of right now she was perfectly content. Alice nodded in greeting to some of the people she passed by as they offered her various versions of, “hey Alice.” Though Alice wasn’t one to make a lot of friends as she didn’t see the point considering her frequent moves to different schools, she was still friendly to anyone who was kind enough to her. She also was on this particular school’s yearbook staff as a photographer so most knew her that way. She was forced to go to almost every school sanctioned function, after all.

Jogging up the steps onto the front porch, Alice felt the sudden urge to knock on the door but quickly realized that it was probably completely unnecessary, most especially with the amount of people that appeared to be coming and going. Rolling back her shoulders slightly as she tried to mentally prepare herself, she decided to take her old camera out of her bag and snap a picture of the door before walking through the gates of hell into the party.

Alice decided to try her best to stay goal-orientated. She would take pictures when she felt the need to, and she would keep her eyes on Kate, who, at the moment was out of sight. As she slipped easily by groups of people, some of the more attention seeking people she knew jumped out of her, hollering out “Ali, take a picture!” as they stuck their tongues out and stared at the lenses with their drunkenly glazed eyes. Alice laughed as she took various shots of people posing in ridiculous ways. She really hoped that they understood none of this was making it into the yearbook.

Alice just kept on snapping pictures as she kept her eyes peeled out her her sister. She also had been simultaneously searching for Brianna who seemed to be impossible to find in the crowds. She couldn’t decide whether it was a good thing she hadn’t seen her yet or a very very bad thing. Quickly pulling out her phone, Alice made her way to stand against a wall away from the center, sending a text to Kate.

    To: Katey

Hey, I can’t find you anywhere. Please tell me you didn’t
decide to slowly beat the girl to death with a spoon.

Looking back up, Alice tucked her brunette hair behind her ears after slipping her phone into her bag. She was getting warm and was defiantly regretting wearing the jacket as she unzipped it and rolled up the sleeves. She was about to move away again and search once more, yet stopped in her tracks as one of the guys on the yearbook committee named Dan strolled up to her, a smug look on his face as he hollered out, “how are you liking Wonderland so far, Alice?” She wasn’t going to let him know just how awfully old that joke was – she was damn sure he already knew that fact. Shrugging her shoulders, she retorted, “I’ll let you know when I find a white rabbit and a hookah-smoking caterpillar. Have you seen Kate anywhere?” Dan shook his head, answering, “Nah, sorry. Maybe she went outside?” Alice shrugged, flashing a small smile to the boy. “It’s fine, you’re probably right.” she stated, before hearing a group of guys call Dan over. The boy turned around and gave the group a small wave before turning back to Alice, saying, “well, I’ll see you at school on Monday.” Turning away, he ran up to greet his drunk buddies. No use in explaining to him she highly doubted her and Kate wouldn’t be transferred someplace else before Monday. By that time, she’d most likely already start getting settled into a new school and an entirely different wonderland.
