Holly felt more than uncomfortable with Makayla allowing Aubree stay for a second time this month. After the first time, Makayla had assured her that it had been a one time thing, and that they had just been doing a nice thing by letting Aubree stay that time. Now, it seemed like it was going to be a regular thing, and maybe jumping to that conclusion was a little dramatic, but that in itself said something. Normally, Holly would have welcomed a guest and a new face. She would have been so excited that someone was visiting them or having a "sleepover", that it would have been nearly impossible to corral her into her own bed by the end of the night. At the very least, she would have insisted that she stay up for long enough to hang out with them or that they watch the movie with her. Instead, once Aubree was in the shower, Holly spent a few minutes trying to plead with Makayla to let her call Cara or Chanel so that she could move in with them for the rest of her life. When that didn't work, her anxiety and frustration and anger resulted in lots of tears, her going to bed without even giving the movie or plate of cookies a second thought, and then her refusing to remove the pillow covering her head for a second, so that she could even respond to Makayla or Brooklyn when they tried to get her to calm down. Makayla tried to reason with her that she didn't have to say a single word to Aubree, and that she could stay up late and watch the movie with Brooklyn if she would cheer up, and Brooklyn insisted that they could have a sleepover in her room, or that she could sleep in Cara's room and have it all to herself, and they would never even have to tell Cara. Options that would usually excite Holly only made her crave silence and solitude more and more. Cookies and movies and friends and the promise of fun presents tomorrow didn't excite her like they would have an hour ago. She wasn't trying to act immature or bratty or temperamental, and there wasn't much that could genuinely upset Holly, but this did, and it didn't take long for her to tire herself out with the crying and fall asleep.
