There was pain in Dettie's voice and probably in her eyes, but they were covered by her sunglasses. Dettie didn't show her darker emotions much. She didn't like to show people that side of her. Dettie reached up and held onto Gemma's good hand, thankfully, and held tight to it like it was the only thing keeping her tethered to the earth. When Dettie told Gemma the news, there was a sadness to her eyes. She had managed to meet the woman only a handful of times and with what she knew of her Gemma never truey believed that she killed her husband, but she wasn't sure who else would've taken down Dettie's father. He was a rather large and angry man if Gemma remembered correctly.
One thing Gemma did remember was how much Dettie cared for her mom. It wasn't the best relationship in the world, but they weren't enemies. And it had been six years since she had last seen her. So that had to be difficult. Dettie's eyes were large and full of hurt. She pulled on Dettie's arms to get her to stand. Once she was, she wrapped her arms around her and held her tightly. "Oh my gosh, Alphie.." She said, squeezing her friend comfortingly. "Alphie Im so sorry. I know you two weren't the best of friends, but she was your mom." She thought a moment. How could she help her?
Lina knew Dettie longer than Gemma. Maybe she knew what to do. She turned, looking for Lina and at first, she didn't see her. Then she walked up with her cousin, Gavin, by her side. She was too far away for Gemma to call over. She twisted her mouth in annoyance but turned back to Dettie and gave a soft smile. Dettie was taller than Gemma so she had to lift her head to look up at her. "I know it could never replace your mom.. god I'm terrible at this... but Lina and I did bring chocolate and marshmallows and graham crackers for some s'mores?" She swayed a little like she was dancing and made her smile a little brighter, a little more genuine. "Since we're here to honor a friend, why don't we also honor your mother? How does that sound?"
