"Room 295, 2...9...5," Echo looked around, trying to find her room. It was the last door in the hall, the only unoccupied room. She eagerly jingled the keys and inserted them into the lock. The door swung open, revealing Echo's new home. "A window!" She gasped, looking at the darkening sky. The apartment was nice, one bedroom with two beds, a little living room, a kitchenette (meals were served downstairs) and her very own bathroom. Finally she wouldn't have to depend on knocking on the glass until someone could come to escort her to use the facilities, she would be allowed to take a bath more than twice a week. "Oh, this is great! I completely forgot about the perks!" The space was designed, of course, for both the human and demon to live together as many demon hunters lost all of their belongings, but Echo was alone since Flo lived at the hospital.
Echo got to keep her name too, which was an added bonus. Echo went through the books on the shelves, so many new things to read. The computer didn't interest her, neither did the phone. The fridge had food though, the cabinets supplied with snacks. She tore into a package of digestives, flopping down on the couch underneath the window with a novel. It had begun to rain, Echo noticed. She put down her book, swallowed her bite of biscuit and opened up the window to stick her head outside. Cold, fat, wet droplets danced on her skin, the demon letting out a howl of glee. She closed the window back up and headed to the bathroom to play with the sink. The bell rang, signaling that dinner downstairs would be served at any minute.
Echo stuffed her feet into shoes she found in the closet and headed downstairs. "Look at what the cat dragged in," Calciferous stood in the entryway of the dining hall, his tail swishing to and fro. "I'm surprised you're not as round as the moon," Echo glared. "They've had a change of heart," Echo said lightly, trying not to start a fight. "I've been summoned," she proudly bore the marking on her chest. "What? That tiny mosquito bite there? Or are those your boobs?" She ground her teeth together, the reminder of consequences fresh in her mind. "Is that tail compensating for something?" She shot, pushing past him to get a tray. Calciferous laughed, "You should come swing by my place, my human's staying by his parents tonight."
"Please, I can hardly stand next to you, I've got no desire to breathe, much less sleep, next to you." Calciferous laughed again, slamming his hand down on her tray. "Get off it Cal, go find another demon to bug." She tugged her tray away, going to sit alone in the corner. Echo was acutely aware of the whispers that followed her, she had a reputation after all. "Yum, meat," Echo stabbed a piece with her fork, taking a nibble. "So good," she drooled, glad to eat something that wasn't gruel.
