Before Elena could retreat into her thoughts and wander around the hall, she was approached by a dapper, and familiar looking man. He formally introduced himself to Elena, as they had met occasionally whenever she would stop by the local bank. "Hugo..." she took a second so she would be sure not to forget his name, but with such a dashing face it would be hard to. "I could do with some company." answering him with a smile while trying not to show how eager she was to have someone to talk to. The pair walked side by side heading off to see if they had desserts to offer. "So, have you found anything that's piqued your interest?..." she asked while quickly looking him up and down. "You do seem like someone who might be a little harder to impress" Her insecurities started to bubble up as she felt out of place here, let alone next to him.
Hugo smiled when Elena said she’d like the company, clasping his hands behind his back as he let Elena set the pace. It was like a grand game, playing the perfect gentleman for an evening and stringing some pretty young lady along. “Oh, there’s a lot of interesting things here,” He said, ignoring the comment about being hard to impress. “a lot of truly bizarre things, as well. I mean, I don’t know who’s going to want a blunted paring knife when you can buy a new one for a few dollars.” He shrugged, “Though, truly, the best part of these things is the company. You can’t put a price on a good conversation with a beautiful woman.” He smiled at Elena, quickly shifting gears to talk about her, “You’ve just moved to town recently, haven’t you? Are you settling in okay?” He didn’t really care, if he were being honest, but getting people to talk about themselves was the best way to get them to think they know you.
Nodding along listening to what Hugo was saying, breaking her silence with a chuckle, when he brought up the paring knife. Elena couldn't help but blush when Hugo completed her appearance, something she still wasn't used to. "Yup, I have been here for almost a month now. Came here after being offered a job as an art teacher, '' Elena said with confidence as she was ecstatic to have landed the job. "I've liked what I have been able to see, but with unpacking, school prep, and everything else it's been hard." Elena finished her thought just as they arrived at the sprawling catering tables. "What about you, Have you lived here your whole life, or more recently came to town?" asked Elena while scanning the spread of sweets with her eyes.
Hugo nodded while Elena talked about her whole journey to living in Essex. New job, unpacking, blah blah blah. Truly, he was more interested in the food in front of him. Should he have something more substantial before eating some sort of pastry? Did it really matter? He shook his head when Elena asked him about himself, “No, I grew up in Chicago. Moved into town several years ago for a change of pace. It’s much calmer out here than in the heart of a big city, you know?” He shrugged and added, “Sometimes I think about going back, but something’s keeping me here.” He shot a smile at Elena, “Probably for the best. I would’ve missed my chance to meet you if I were still in Chicago.” After a quick glance around, he let out a careful sigh, not wanting it to seem forced. “Elena, I hate to do this, but I have some friends I need to go say hello to,” He gave her an apologetic smile, resting a gentle hand on her shoulder, “I wouldn’t want to hog your attention all evening, anyway. I’m sure you have plenty of people tripping over each other to get a chance to speak with you.” He smiled, bright and sincere, “Thank you for talking with me for a few minutes, though. We’ll have to find some time to talk again, maybe somewhere a little less busy.” He shot Elena a wink before turning to leave, dessert-less.
Elena contently listened to Hugo wanting to remember everything he was saying. "Was great to get a chance to truly meet you, and yes it would be lovely to talk again," Elena said before watching Hugo make his way over to someone else. Elena couldn't help but be a little sad when Hugo parted ways to go attend to other matters. Turning to the sweets, with slightly rosier cheeks, Elena grabbed a slice of coffee cake, before finding something else to do.
