Romans often used a first or last middle name signifying the given name (praenomen), family name (nomen), and branch of a family (cognomen). The three name formula was not used for everyone, however. Usually, only Patricians and Equites employed this formula and foreigners had their own customs. Plebeians would at least have a praenomen and usually a nomen. Slaves usually only had a praenomen.
Ex. Gaius Julius Caesar
Gaius=praenomen
Julius=nomen
Caesar= cognomen
