We will be using nontraditional magic in this RP. In order to wield it, one must posses not only the proper crystals, but the correct body markings as well. Every marking is different and contains different magic, therefore not every user will be able to do the same thing.
There are four basic types of magics, the element magic; earth, air, fire, and water. Then there are more complicated types that one can learn depending on what profession you go into. Other types include healing, shielding, transformation, and hunting.
The crystals are the source of all life on Nova, they protect the island and keep it thriving. Should a crystal ever be removed from the island it will cease to work and will crumble into dust. The Novans believe that the crystals were a gift from the sky and worship them like Gods. The three main crystals are protected in a special chamber in a tunnel under ground, should you ever touch the main crystals without special equipment your body would begin to freeze and you would die.
In small amounts, however, you will be fine. Mixed with the markings and special abilities of a Novan one can properly use the magic to do their bidding. Novans are taught at a young age not to abuse this and to only use magic when they have to.
A Novan is given their first marking at birth; this marking is minor and identifies your element. At the age of five a Novan is gifted their crystal and from there they must complete quests, tasks, win competitions, and learn in order to receive more tattoos. Not all are permanent, in fact there are some types of magic where the marking will fade after one use however those types are very complicated to master and often a user will find that it is more of a nuisance then anything.
