Raleigh was always an idealist. The world was a mess after the Storm, and still people rebuilt, that gave her hope that one-day the world would get back to normalcy. That she would get the chance to live a good life. She wanted to grow up, fall in love, do all of the romantic things you saw in the movies.
And fall in love she did. When she was sixteen she met a boy who made her feel like she was in a romance novel. She devoted all of her time and energy into making him happy, but there were some things she just couldn’t provide. He would get angry, get physical, and she would feel guilty for making him get that way. She blamed herself. One night, everything came to a head. He went too far. She spent days in the hospital and months in therapy. She had to attend court, testify and relive what he did to her.
She was changed, of course she was. Now Raleigh doesn’t believe in the kind of love she used to dream about, she knows she doesn’t live in a fantasy. She’s hardened. She doesn’t trust anymore, she doesn’t let herself be fooled.
