There was an elf-girl that he half-recognized and the man she seemed to trail behind each time Merrak saw her. He did not know her name and he was certain she had never laid eyes on him. Merrak did not wave to her, not wanting to disrupt her business. The priest's gaze lingered on Alek for a second longer than Ellie's and passed over to Idris.
There was a whisper in the back of his mind and he felt compelled to speak to this woman. His boots left wet prints behind him, and his priest's coat dripped water. He removed it before he approached Idris and hung it on one of the many hooks along the wall. Merrak tugged at his collar and grimaced. The man never liked it but it was a part of him.
"Pardon me," Merrak said to Idris while he stood at her side, distanced but close enough for conversation. "Chergauti has heard your prayer," the priest whispered to Idris. His blue eyes darted around to see if anyone had heard him.
He still killed undead. But not as the Templar he use to be. He had become tainted, and thus lost the Lord's graces. But even still, he had been bound and determined to continue with his mission to rid the world of the blight, even with his curse and damnation.
"It's fine Ellie.." He muttered before they crossed the room. "But if he even hints at taking me off the map, then you know what has to happen.." He added, his lips barely moving. His gold yellow eyes shifted to glare in Talos' direction.
When Ellie introduced herself to Talos, Alek remained silent. He felt no need to introduce himself to the man until it was necessary. His focus remained on Talos, but at the sound of more people entering the facility he would have to agree with Ellie. "I think we may find it necessary in order to talk about the things you wish to speak about with Miss Coulter." He said, trying to add to why they should be going to a more private room.
The fact that both of them suggested they be alone amused him greatly, however. If this was indeed some base ploy on his life, it was the shoddiest attempt he'd seen since the El'Guar tried to lure him into giving up his soul. With a dark chuckle, he stands, picking up the bird and keeping it in his left hand.
"As you wish," he rumbles, his voice deeper than the hills. "I will follow." He looks between the two of them, idle fancy and amusement on the outside, cold-blooded readiness on the inside. He couldn't tell which of the two was the leader yet, but both were obviously wary of him, just judging by their body language and tone. Alas that Talos had not been gifted with the power of true sight, but the Light had given him other means of detecting his foes.
He paid little heed to the others in the tavern; once again, even if everyone in the room, or just one or two, plotted to kill him, he would deal with it as it came. Worrying himself over shadow enemies would do no good.
"SO all I did was give his heart an electrical charge, for Just a few years ago we learned that our brain sends out electrical signals to all parts of our body, isn't that incredible!!" He finished the message and rolled. HE placed it in a small tube that was on the leg of hawk. HE carried it to the window and let it go. Just then a young man bursed into the room.
"Where is George! Is he all right?"
"He's ok for now Timothy. I just sent for a doctor. Just go back down to the bar and take over for George." Tim nodded and left. Otto then put his arm around Xavier's shoulder, while taking a puff off his pipe.
"Come on Xavier, lets go back down to the Bar. Two ex military now buccaneers, who wouldn't hire us?"
"Your secret is safe with me, I assure you," Merrak promised in his bass voice. "I try to avoid such attention but I am a priest of the Old Gods of the Earth. I am a rare breed, especially in the heart of Axis, but we do exist. I do not condemn what you have done at all. I am more..." Merrak tilted his head and looked up at the ceiling whimsically. "Impressed," he finally said after a second of pause.
"Merrak Hunt," the man introduced himself, extending a hand toward Idris to show her that he meant no harm.
"My name is Idris. I've just moved into town, all my life I have lived on a little homestead hidden out in the woods. My mom and dad are great, they taught me...." She glanced around to make sure no one was listening "magic. Just basic stuff, but using it became part of our daily life, as natural as breathing. I had a good life. A safe life, you know. But....I got lonely. I had to beg for many years for them to let me come here, they were afraid that I would be persecuted for my...skills. They made me promise to keep it hidden, but apparently I'm rubbish at that." She laughed nervously. "I've moved into a little house in the New Quarter. We have heard rumors that there are lots of us living there, but you are the first that I have met."
"But," Merrak said, shaking himself out of reverie. "Do not assume that I am gifted such as you are. I've no special qualities outside of my priesthood." He chuckled and tugged at the ever nagging collar. Sometimes he believed they made it especially uncomfortable so that Merrak was reminded of his vows around attractive women. It was now being proven to work.
"How long had you been in The City?" Merrak asked, genuinely interested.
Raking his eyes over the current inhabitants of the Inn, he narrows his eyes. He didn't know the men, but they didn't seem like the sort he would need to deal with in any meaningful capacity. Not that he would say no to a conversation, or even an interested recruit, but judging by Ellie's reaction thus far, he decided it would be best if he simply did his own job, and let her deal with the rest.
It was unlike Alek not to survey the place as he walked in. Vampire hunters would know instantly what he was, albeit he too was a vampire hunter. A vampire was a vampire, and a monster to boot. But Alek seemed dazed, distant and on the verge of breaking.
If they had sat at a table, the man would pull back a chair and collapse on it, another characteristic not of his. He would not move from that spot, nor speak or scarcely breath. Not that he needed to at least. He just sat there.
A vampire. How had he not seen it before?
Merrak's eyes narrowed and his hand slipped beneath the table then into his boot. The priest had no intention of killing the vampire. He did not kill what was already dead. An enchanted dagger lay hidden inside the leather of his boot and now Merrak's fingers toyed with the hilt.
Amelia would be pleased to have another rogue vampire in her hands.
Merrak, with the use of a slight-of-hand gesture, tucked the dagger up his sleeve and sat upright. He sipped from his water and opened the abandoned newspaper in front of him. The priest tugged on his collar, uncomfortable as it was, and pretended to read.
Meanwhile, Ellie's eyes had fixated on the front door of the tavern, waiting for Alek to come back. She didn't say anything more to Talos and refused to even make him comfortable in her company. She didn't even want to be his company. There were things Ellie would rather been doing at that very moment.
As soon as Alek came through the door, Ellie shot up from the chair she sat in. She carefully watched him cross the tavern, sit, and then do nothing. Ellie came around to Alek's back and wrapped her arms around him, pressed her cheek against his, and asked him what had happened.
"Pardon me, young man, if I may," Merrak said across the room, ignoring the ongoings of the group at the table across the room. "I need another water, if you can," Merrak asked Otto, mistaking him for the new tender.
"Pardon me, young man, if I may, I need another water, if you can."
"Oh, you must be new here. I'm not the bar tender. The current one, George is sick. His repayment, Timothy, is in the back room and can help you when he comes back. MY friend and myself here are just waiting for an opportunity for a Job. This tavern is a popular place for recruiting."
Talos had been keeping a close eye on the rest of the Tavern. There was a Priestly looking man who he hadn't noticed before, and didn't pay much mind to as of yet; a priest was seldom a threat in intent or ability to a Paladin, though once their ally returned, he would have to keep an eye on him.
And, speak of the devil (No pun intended), there he was. He looked haggard, drained. His pallor seemed to have increased. He showed all the signs of having recently fed, except for the self satisfaction he usually saw in Vampires. That, at least, showed he was indeed unfond of his current form.
When Alek had sat and slumped down at the table, Talos made sure to do away with his usual disgust. It was difficult, even as allies, to sit in the presence of a known Vampire. But he would be strong for his brother.
"Be at peace, and find your wall; Seek release, from enemies all," he recites from one of the Paladin texts.
"I drained someone.." He muttered, low enough for only Ellie to hear. His words were grave. Usually, when he had control of himself, he would not completely drain a person. Instead, he would render one unconscious and only take a small bit, leaving them there after he was sure they'd be alright and repeat this process until he had his fill. It was time consuming that way, but he did not want to kill anyone. This time, he had.
"I think I had gotten caught.. And I think someone shot at me, and hit me.. Made me slow to move.. Painful as well.." Pain was something Alek hardly mentioned. Even falling from high places, the man never complained. Why should he? He was dead, technically.
He then tensed, feeling the eyes of the priest on him for the first time. "Ellie, I need my cloak.." He murmured. He looked at Talos. "A monster cannot find peace. Even among allies, I cannot allow myself to be at ease." He then turned to dare a glance over his shoulder towards Merrek, his golden hues ablaze. Not all was ever what it seemed, he reminded himself. Even if he knew he was a vampire, inside he tried everything to be the opposite of what people knew of them. Yet, there were some wolves that wore sheep's clothing.
"You're bleeding! Talos! Do something!" Ellie said, panicking. It was in her very nature to panic at the slightest problem with Alek's 'health'. It was Merrak's cue to interrupt whatever they had was going on and get closer to the vampire. It was difficult to mask his features and to control the twist smirk, but he did.
"I am a priest. Allow me to see what I am able to do," Merrak said. "Pardon me, friend. Someone is in need," the priest said to Otto. He made his way over to Ellie, Alek, and Talos, knowing none of their names.
"You need a surgeon!" Ellie snapped back at Alek before she began to all but strip him nude, attempting to tug off whatever was in the way of his injury.

"Shot... by the looks of it a .50 caliber pistol. " He looked at the entrance wound on the back and noticed burn marks.
"And it was point-blank range." He carefully inspected the wound.
"No main veins or arteries have been hit, nor your lungs. This is an easy fix."
He took out two rags and handed one to Merrak. "Put pressure on his back wound," he commanded. He then took a bottle of clear liquid and spilled some onto his rag.
"Ok, this is going to sting."
He began to feel the tinge of unease when she attracted, not only the attention of a supposed Doctor- who would likely soon realize his patient was technically deceased- but the Priest. It did not bode well. He had to take action, and quickly.
Rising, the imposing figure of Talos moves, quickly placing himself between Alek and the Priest, and placing a large, firm hand on Otto's shoulder. "He is my charge," he rumbles in a deep, not-quite-a-threat voice. "I will take care of him." He looks toward the Priest, making a brief sign of Avacyn; while she was unlikely to be known, let alone revered here, her symbol was close enough to common signs of the Light.
"Forgive me Brother, but this is not your business." He did not like speaking to a fellow follower of the Light as such, but he could not risk losing Alek to a misunderstanding.
He had spoken few words, but they were direct and bore the barest hint of intimidation. Which, given his size and grizzled appearance, might be enough.
"Ellie.." He hissed quietly. "My cloak. Please." His eyes were now on the Priest. The other just seemed a man willing to help, but this man would string him up faster than the women did holiday decorations. And Ellie had brought his attention straight to him. "I thank you, Father, for your concern.." He said, covering the wound again as Otto began to try to debate how bad and big it was. He honestly could not remember how close the person had been when he was shot, but he was pretty sure they weren't -that- close. Nor that big of caliber. Otherwise, there would have been more of him to put back together. "But I'm pretty sure it's nothing we cannot take care of ourselves.. And I am sure you are a very busy man on your normal time, Father. I'd rather not bother you while you are on your break." He said, his tone shaking slightly. True, it was mostly out of rage that his voice was shaking, but it added to the effect of a living man who had been shot and was on an adrenaline rush.
If Ellie had not given him his cloak by this point, he would try to unfasten it from her neck and pull it from her with one hand, his glaring hues leaving the Priest for a moment in order to glare at Ellie, trying to make sure she knew the danger she had put him in. Fool woman, yes he had been shot, but there was no need to go screaming about it. In an hour or two, he'd be right as rain.
The priest nodded to Talos and backed away. It was not the right time to strike and capture the vampire. But, he made note of the night-creature's face and was not going to forget it. Merrak planned to track the hideous abomination, waiting for him just before a feeding, and then use the dagger on him.
"Yes, of course. I will leave you to it," Merrak said, smiling contently. "I shall pray over your speedy recovery." The priest dropped his eyes from the gathering and went back to his table.
Ellie had turned red in the face. If it was from embarrassment or anger, it was difficult to tell even for someone like Alek. She refused to take the cloak off in time and it was Alek that removed it from around her. She gasped quietly at the force he had used. It was clear that Alek was displeased with her behavior.
Tears glittered in her eyes and she dashed out the door, far too upset at what she had done.
Lightning flashed and thunder rolled. The electrical lights flickered and then went out.
Otto, Xavier, Merrak, Talos, and Alek were left in the dark.
"He is my charge, I will take care of him." he said so that only the ones close to him could hear. The group of people around Alek was drawing attention of other people in the bar.
"This man has been shot. The nearest medical facility is a 20 minuet walk, even taking the short cuts. I am the best trained in this whole area, at least let me patch him up. He will bleed to death!" in the RAF, Otto was used to large men on the ships and standing up to them. The man started forward a bit hissing for his cloak. Otto stepped forward "No, you need medical help. Let me help you." But then Otto noticed his teeth. Then he put two and two together.
"A vampire...." Otto whispered, he stood their for a few seconds, stunned. The elf ran out of the bar for some reason, Otto's mind was else where. THere was a crack of lightning, and the lights went out. "Damn" Otto came to his seances, took a lucifer from out of his pocket a struck it. "Timothy, get some candles"
"He is under my care," he retorts to the insistence, standing directly in his way. When the Doctor put it all together and whispered what Alek must have been, it was all Talos could do to prevent striking the man then and there. If the Priest heard...
Ellie had simply run away, which may make things worse, when it came to it. And then, without warning, the light globes had extinguished.
In the few seconds of Darkness, Talos had removed himself from Otto and repositioned himself next to the last place he thought Alek was. Standing next to a Vampire, in the dark, was the last thing he wanted to do; but he could at least remedy one of those problems.
Flitting out from its pouch, the bird icon had become alight, bathing their immediate surroundings in its radiance. It would likely pain Alek's eyes to look upon... and Alek could probably have seen better in the dark, anyway. Talos felt safer having his wits and senses operating at the fullest, however. In his current state, Alek was unreliable, angry as he was. "We're leaving," he says, directed to Alek. He was making a head count of those who had been in the bar prior.
The vampire grabbed after Ellie painfully as she started to dart from the tavern, missing her by a hair's length. Without thinking or paying much attention to the others, who were still fussing over the wound that was in his side, he threw his color-shifting cloak over his shoulders and started for the door nearly in the same moment.
As the lights flickered out, he turned to Talos. "Hurry." He stated like a demand. He was still in pain from whatever had shot him and it slowed him down annoyingly. He would make it out the door before Talos, hoping to catch Ellie before she got too far.
