Description

Image
Name: Elspeth Vandemere
Alias: ‘Captain’
Picture: Image
Description: Elspeth has long brown hair that sits around her shoulders. It is usually fairly tangled and tingled with sea spray as well as being sun bleached after a great deal of time out on the deck. Her skin is fairly pale and freckles at the slightest hint of sunlight and therefore, has more than her fair share. Her eyebrows are arched quite highly which gives her the impression of being perpetually amused with a scar cutting through the middle of her right eyebrow. Elspeth’s eyes are quite rounded and are decorated with sleepy shadows that have cultivated over the years. Her eyes are a soft blue with highlights of hazel throughout with a coloboma in her left eye, giving the pupil a keyhole appearance. Her lips are plump and coloured slight red. Elspeth’s face is an oval shape and her chin has two slight dents from pox marks located slightly to the left.

Elspeth’s hands are covered in rough calluses, mementos from all the time she has spent maintaining her ship and taking it around the land. Her palms are scarred and burned from mishaps with candles and sharpening working knives although these injuries are less common now. Her nails are raggedy and there is a good amount of dirt and sea salt imbedded underneath them.

Elspeth typically wears a worn red shirt that has shrunk to a glove fit, complete with a few holes and loose threads after being worn so frequently. She also wears a long jacket with a scorch mark (or five) along the bottom that belonged to her older brother before she borrowed it. She also stole a rather fetching looking hat from said brother but doesn’t wear it quite so often as it keeps blowing off in the wind. Elspeth also wears a neck tie made of white cloth that has started to get a little raggedy from the sea spray. She also wears a pair of worn denim trousers with a rip torn in the right knee and a smattering of candle wax marks over her thigh. Her boots are made of sea worn leather and come just below her knees. She is often seen to be wearing black leather gloves, merely for comfort more than anything. Elspeth also keeps a hunting knife in her belt in case of emergencies although she blanches at the idea of using it and a work knife that she uses around the boat and for repairs.

Age:27
Sex:Female
Date of Birth:July 25th, 567
Birthplace:A small fishing village in Triveila that clings to the coast line of the ocean.
Current Location/Residence:Not currently a fixed position as she travels from place to place upon her trading ship.
Ethnicity:Irlean
Height:5’9”
Weight:130lbs
Frame/Build:A curvy hourglass figure
Hair Colour:Brown with highlights of light sun bleached blonde
Hair Length:Shoulder length with a sweeping fringe over the right side of her face
Eye Colour:Delicate light blue eyes which are highlighted with hazel streaks. Elspeth also has a coloboma, a defect of the pupil, in her left eye which makes her pupil eerily reminiscent of a keyhole.
Distinguishable Markings: Her coloboma is fairly distinguishable as well as the array of distinct scars on her hands.
Complexion: Elspeth has light skin with a smattering freckles across her face and arms as well as a large array of scars across her hands. She also has two small pox marks around her chin.

Behavioural Quirks Elspeth has an almost obsessive need to check upon her wares and her ship, understandable considering they are her sole source of income. She is also uncomfortable at the idea of being out of her comfort zone. She is used to sailing, selling and buying. Other things tend to make her uncomfortable, especially when they are important and others are relying on her greatly.
Political Affiliation:No Political Affiliation
Social Class:Lower Class
Occupation:Trader
Religious Beliefs:Goddecca
Family:
-Father: Artur Vandemere, fisherman and trader (deceased, natural causes (old age))

--Uncle: Kilno Gudrun, trader, works alongside Elspeth

--Sister-In-Law: Haida Vandemere, vendor of seafood (nee Nyar)
-Sister: Katina Vandemere, (deceased, natural causes (illness in infancy))
Sister: Taima Vandemere, vendor of seafood(younger by ten years)

Personality:Elspeth is a rather calm and collected young woman with a level head and a great deal of patience. She is used to coming against hardships and working through them. She doesn’t appear very energetic or especially lively, that is all kept inside. She had to appear as the responsible and calm older sibling alongside Darni when their father died. Thus, most of her emotions have been internalised to a great degree but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have them. Elspeth is incredibly focussed and puts a great deal of importance in family and work. Leisure time means nothing to her. She has a soft spot for children as they remind her of her younger sisters. It takes quite a lot for Elspeth’s anger to reveal itself but when it does, she can be as wrathful as the sea herself.

Elspeth is not considered the most graceful or ladylike of women. In fact, she would probably shun you if you tried to say so. She loathes the idea of being a sweet little housewife and loving graceful wife. She believes that that is not the way things are meant to be. Elspeth is also not adverse to violence. Although it does take a lot for her anger to show, she will not take being attacked lightly. She may not fight with any weapons but her fists are good enough. She was taught to fight by her brother and his friends and can throw punches like nobody’s business. However, she would have to be exceptionally hard pressed to even think about killing someone. She treats each life as sacred and although violence doesn’t faze her, the idea of taking someone’s life makes her rather uncomfortable.

Elspeth is also rather tactless. Living in a family where it was just easier to speak her mind than to skirt around the issue, she often just says what she sees or thinks without thinking about the consequences. Therefore, it can be rather difficult to warm up to the young woman. Elspeth is also a lot more familiar and comfortable around men as she feels she doesn’t fit in with the soft gentle ladylike women. Therefore, if there is a group of people, she’ll often gravitate towards the males as she feels she fits in there more.

Strengths:Elspeth has garnered quite a good deal of muscle from her work on the boat and is quite strong as a result. She is also well versed in most things to do with the ocean, whether that be fishing, sailing or just reading the sea itself and predicting the weather to some degree. She also possesses skills in repairing and building, skills that she needed for her business and her family. She is also able to fight, particularly in close combat. She was also taught to swim by the time she could toddle and is a powerful swimmer, something very important considering her situation.

Weaknesses:Elspeth has very little tact and often offends people without meaning to. She also is unversed in area of weapons other than her knives, which are almost purely for work. She is also unwilling to kill anyone and finds the idea of murder deplorable.

Equipment:A small folding pocket knife she uses for repairs, carving and work. It is made of steel and its handle is made of a stag’s antler and was bought by her father when he was trading. When he died, the knife was passed down onto her. She also carries a hunting knife for safety. The knife’s blade is also made of steel and the handle is cocobola with a brass butt and guard. This knife is carried purely for emergencies and is rarely used, meaning it is in far better condition than the folding knife. Elspeth also carries a small piece of whetstone in her pocket to sharpen her tools at any time.

Biography:Elspeth was born on the 25th of July to a lower class family in Traveila. Her mother, Ridha, had already had a son, Darni, who was three years old at the time and was very disappointed that the baby turned out to be a girl. Ridha’s husband was out fishing with his brother, Kanduke, and his brother in law, Kilno, at the time of the baby’s birth. However, this was not unusual. In fact, most of the women in the village had gone through the same thing and rallied round to support the young mother. The baby was named Elspeth Nootka Vandemere, named after her father’s mother and her family’s ship name respectively. Her father did not see the baby until her second month and was overjoyed at the sight of the tiny infant with the bright shock of brown hair upon her head. However, this just meant there was another mouth to feed and that Artur would have to work harder. The family didn’t see it this way and found the new child to be a blessing.

As Elspeth started to grow, she followed her older brother around as all children tend to do. She learned how to walk fairly quickly after becoming irritated at the fact she couldn’t keep up with Darni. Despite this advancement in walking, her speech was much slower, she didn’t properly learn to speak until well into her third year, although her family could understand what her various shrieks and wails meant. It became a common sight around the village to see the young Vandemere boy holding the hand of a babbling toddler with tangled unruly brown hair and the big blue eyes. Her older brother started to show off his younger sister, making sure everyone in the village knew that this was his sister. Darni brought it upon himself to teach his little sister a great deal of important thing such as, how to swim. Of course, he taught her in the rock pools and it wasn’t so much swimming as splashing but before too long, she was bobbing around the shallows under the watchful eyes of her mother, aunt and older brother. Darni also taught her how to fight as he worried that the older children would walk all over his baby sister. He needn’t have worried; she took to protecting herself as easily as a duck to water. Darni could help but be even more proud of his sister and started showing her off to his friends and showing them how strong the little girl was.

Elspeth was seven when her mother was pregnant for the third time and, just as Darni had been before, she was immensely excited. She couldn’t wait for another sibling and to be friends with. After all, all her friends were Darni’s friends first and they weren’t quite as friendly with her yet. Sure, they appreciated the fact that she could swim rather deep and had small hands that could fit in the cracks on the underwater rocks and the fact that she could fight back if anyone went after her but she was still ‘Darni’s little sister’ and not ‘Elspeth’. When the baby was born, she was given the name Katina and the whole family doted upon her. The baby was happy and healthy for a few months before the illness struck. The infant was infected with a horrible disease that left her unable to feed or be lifted. She couldn’t keep her food down and her skin was too sensitive to touch without causing pain. There was no treatment or cure. The family were unable to do anything but watch as the baby wasted away and eventually died. She was five months old and her father had never seen her. The family went into mourning and were hurt deeply by their loss. Elspeth refused to accept that Katina had died and spent most of her time searching round the house for the baby. This lasted a few weeks before Darni grabbed her by the wrist and dragged her out of the house before explaining that the baby wasn’t coming back. Elspeth didn’t speak for the rest of the week.

After the family had tried to get over their loss, another tragedy struck. When Artur and his brother, Kanduke, were fishing, a huge storm front had come in and battered the boat against a rocky outcrop. The ship, the Nootka V, was ripped apart by the howling raging winds and the harsh seas until only the frame remained. Artur managed to get into the lifeboat and waited for his brother who he had assumed was right behind him. Kanduke never appeared. With heavy hearts and a great deal of weeping, the family accepted that the sea had taken Kanduke, the sea that had been his life had caused his death. Artur returned to his family, wracked with grief and pain for his lost brother. Elspeth and Darni were heartbroken over their lost uncle and were scared that the sea would claim their father next time. Their father put these fears to rest, to a degree, as he said he was not going back to fishing, instead he would be a trader. This was a large decision as despite being safer, trading meant he would be away for longer. Ridha was unsure but accepted that it had to be done. Thus, Elspeth’s father, her other uncle, Kilno, Darni and Elspeth herself got to work on building the Nootka VI. The ship’s name had been passed on for generations, the name Nootka belonging to her great, great grandmother. However, this was the first time the name had been given to a trading vessel rather than a fishing boat. The Nootka VI was much larger than her previous namesakes and had a much bigger hold. The ship had two main masts which had the names Katina and Kanduke carved on the top as well as a great deal of other sails. The Nootka VI felt a little like closure for the family and Elspeth felt that as construction was completed, their grief was finally allowed to ebb a little.

Life carried on as normal for the Vandemere’s from that point on. The years passed and the children grew into teenagers and adults. Darni had reached his 21st birthday and was out fishing on his own vessel, a small ship by the name of Ridha. Elspeth had reached the age of seventeen and was determined that she was to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a trader. She wanted to see the world and return with stories like her father did. She wanted to have the same kind of adventures, see different things, meet new people. She daydreamed about this kind of life as she worked at home and on the odd boat. Their father was gone for weeks, often months at a time but when he came back, the joy was indescribable. Although as Artur worked, his family were growing. Ridha was pregnant once more and Elspeth was doing everything within her power to make sure that the pregnancy went as smoothly as possible. Darni was in a relationship with a young village woman named Haida Nyar and was completely sure that this was the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. It seemed Haida felt the same way, as she was often seen waiting on the docks for the Ridha to come in each day. In fact, Darni was so sure, he was going to ask her to marry him. He had told Elspeth in a fit of worry and after laughing at his panic, she tried to soothe his fears and reassured him that, yes, Haida was as devoted to him as he was to her.

Then, that same year, deep in winter during a truly vicious storm, Ridha went into labour. For once, all the family were there to help her through it. Artur had returned a few days beforehand and Darni had thought against going out on the boat as the sea looked so horrendous, the large swells and crashing breakers. Thus, the family helped bring the smallest addition of the Vandemere family into the world. They named her Taima which means ‘crash of thunder’, a name they felt was apt considering the circumstances. A name especially apt once she opened her mouth and began to shriek the house down. Taima, thankfully, was as healthy as could be and managed to avoid most illnesses. Elspeth spent a great deal of time caring for the baby as Darni and Artur went away to work and Ridha tried to regain her strength. Elspeth was seventeen and told Taima all of their father’s stories and told her about the places she was going to see and the things she’d bring back as gifts.

When Elspeth was 25, her brother 28 and Taima was just about to turn seven, Artur became ill. He lost all of his strength and was bed bound. They all knew he had very little time left and endeavoured to make each minute count. After a few perfect days with his family, in the place he loved, Artur Vandemere died quietly in his sleep. His family were at a loss. Darni spent even more time with his new wife, Haida, and ignored his family. Taima was angry and hurt and began taking it out on their mother. Ridha was heartbroken. Elspeth felt she needed to keep everything together and get the family back into a stable position. She asked her sister in law to take Taima under her wing as Ridha grieved and Haida kindly took care of the child. Darni was earning for his own family and couldn’t keep both his household and theirs afloat. Thus, Elspeth took control of the Nootka VI, much to the annoyance of Darni and Kilno. However, as Elspeth had said, Darni had his own boat already and Kilno had no claim to the Vandemere vessel. The men argued that the boat should belong to them and that Elspeth didn’t understand what she was getting into but she tore their arguments to shreds. She made it clear that something needed to be done. Darni gave in, as he always did with his sisters, and Kilno demanded to work alongside Elspeth to keep an eye on her. Elspeth was unsure until her mother expressed her worry and then the young woman gave in. She was the captain of the Nootka VI, her family’s legacy and she would provide for her family, no matter the cost.

So begins...

"Trust me, Linde," Elspeth drawled her ocean eyes darting around quickly, double checking for any unwanted attention. Certain that there were no loose ears or any stray eyes, Elspeth carried on. "Adan knows how to disappear. He wouldn't get into any mishaps." The merchant smiled, looking confident. "Anyway, he doesn't know why we are seeking out Drake, he only knows that I want to know his position."

Elspeth smirked, her face screwing up a little as she grinned. "Besides, Adan wouldn't say anything to anyone but me. He knows that I wouldn't exactly accept failure on his part and he definitely wants to get rid of his favour." The young woman tilted her head to the side slightly.

"So we better keep a fairly low profile if Te'i Sai is around and have fought with yourself rather viciously..." Elspeth frowned before pacing. "It would be best to stay hidden away in the shadows then, yes?"

"I was once told a story as a child that a Demon fell in love with an Angel. The story ended with the Demon's soul becoming purified by the Angel's love and the two were able to live together as one... I know it was just a tale of fantasy, a children's bedtime story... but could such a concept truly become a reality?"

"It would be best to stay hidden away in the shadows then, yes?" Elspeth said.

Linde nodded.

"Yes, I agree. My apothecary should serve us that purpose. Follow me." She said, leading Elspeth through some of the nearby alleyways until they reached a modest, but still well sized double story building.

The sign above the door read "Almna Apothecary," and Linde quickly unlocked the door and let Elspeth through after her before closing and locking it.

As Linde walked inside, she took in the familiar sight of home. As one stood inside the door they saw a desk where a receptionist, who was currently on leave due to Linde's extended absence, would sit and greet guests and patients in need. Seats were on the right along the wall with a table and supplies for making tea if one desired. A display case of some rare herbs were situated just above the seats along the walls wrapping around until they found their stopping point just to the left of the receptionist desk.

To the left there was a door, and through the door was a medical room with beds and shelf after shelf of medical supplies including herbs, preserved concoctions and remedies, medical tape, and more. Passed the beds was another door leading to a ninety degree hallway which led to further rooms for isolation beds of patients who were diseased and had to be kept separate. But Linde didn't use that door. Instead, in the medical room, there was another single door on the right which led to Linde's office, and through another door just beyond that, her living space. She led Elspeth to her room where she invited her to remove her armor and store it in her closet along with Linde's own armor.

Linde placed some regular clothing on, but kept the closet unlocked and open slightly for ease of access as she led Elspeth to her living quarters complete with a kitchen, workout room, meditation chamber, and bedroom.

"Make yourself and home. Would you like some tea, or perhaps some water?" She asked.

Elspeth skulked around Linde's house, her ocean eyes picking up on every single tiny detail. Her brain absorbed each and every little detail. She'd never been in a apothecary before and it was like nothing she'd ever seen before. A few words leaped out at her as parts of her stock looked back out at her. Elspeth's head bobbed up as she heard voices. Voices she didn't know.

The young woman sneaked around the house, poking her head around the door and her blue eyes narrowed at the sight of two other people within the building. Customers perhaps. She frowned at this, straining her ears. Conversation trickled through however, it didn't give Elspeth much information about what was going on. Spotting Linde by the door, the captain slipped over silently, her eyes voicing the question.

She silently took a quick look at the two women who had come into the building before turning back to Linde with a questioning look on her face.

Who are we to say that Life does not also bring Love?

With a gentle smile, Rina gives a bow and follows the woman into the other room, eyes shimmering happily as she looks along the walls, even as the door is shut. Instantly, her notebook is open, her pencil dancing across it with little scribbles. "This is fascinating! How can you get so many different remedies with basic ingredients? There are just so many!"

A brow rises over the fiery blue eyes of Calandra as she allows herself to be trapped inside the unknown room, her gaze resting on the one cabinet that isn't opened. Luckily for Rina, she still doesn't speak, leaving the business of this woman as unknown.

Rina doesn't seem to notice this, though, instead continuing to pester Linde with countless questions. "What kind of poisons can you treat? What goes into an antidote? Are there ways to treat deeper wounds on the body? Could there ever be a way to treat heart problems? Maybe breathing issues, too! Oh, there's just so much I don't know!" Her excitement only excalates with every breath she takes. Calandra remains silent, but only just, watching both Linde and the other unknown woman with guarded eyes. She waits for her precious cousin to be finished with what she wants to ask, but soon she grows restless. A clearing of the throat, the only sound made the whole morning. Rina looks up. "Oh! I'm sorry, cousin! You should have let me know before you came in."

Bowing to Linde happily, she speaks with a gentle voice. "I do apologize, but my cousin doesn't like to be cooped up in a building. I am sure that your day is a busy one. Is there any way I could come back later?"

"I was once told a story as a child that a Demon fell in love with an Angel. The story ended with the Demon's soul becoming purified by the Angel's love and the two were able to live together as one... I know it was just a tale of fantasy, a children's bedtime story... but could such a concept truly become a reality?"

Linde gathered all of her belongings, but arrived too late to save Calandra from a rather gruesome fate. Rina's silence and her lacking of a voice during Calandra's fall put a dent in Linde's heart for the poor girl. The pain she must be going through with how much she loved her cousin… What a horrible fate.

The Red-Eyed Demon gave no time for mourning, however, and approached Linde before giving her a map to a specific location within the city of Tralnu. It was a city Linde knew well, approximately thirty miles northwest, but why go there? The city was not exactly a hub of activity, and there was nothing of interest there save for the people who lived there. No big businesses, no major items of trade. Just a small city with a bunch of people who made regular treks to neighboring cities to do their shopping and trading.

Linde looked questioningly at the Demon.

"You will understand when you arrive why I have sent you there. Prepare yourselves. This is a mission you cannot fail." He said, turning and beginning to make for the shadows of a nearby alley.

"Wait! What are you going to do?" She asked.

The Demon stopped and turned to look at her.

"I must remain here for the time being. There is a greater concentration of Roda Ah K'mht here than I had anticipated. They must be dealt with. Elspeth's little errand boy has been warned and guided to a safe location. She needn't worry about his safety or his previous mission. Now go!" He ordered, turning once again and this time disappearing into the darkness.

Linde heaved a sigh, turning around to try and see if Elspeth had come out to wait for her. When she was sure that Elspeth was with her, the two of them made for Tralnu, taking off at a jog and keeping a rough pace of about six to seven minutes per mile as they went. Their stamina, having increased dramatically from the effect of the Heaven's Tears, was rather refreshing. Not having to stop or wait for a horse to rest and catch its breath made it rather easy to reach the city within the course of about three and a half hours, but upon arrival they both noticed that the city was almost entirely up in flames. Hundreds of people were leaving the city in droves, and as Linde looked on she wondered if they were already too late to succeed.

After a few more moments of analysis, Linde noticed that the flames were already dying out, and there was something else going on within the ashen city ruins as the blazes began to lose strength and vitality. Linde pulled out the map she had been give, and looked to Elspeth to follow her. The two of them jogged into the city, following the route specified by the Demon as they weaved in and out of flaming alleyways that still held a blaze and dodging falling debris from burned and charred housing. Finally, they came to the building marked on the map by the Demon, and Linde looked to Elspeth, hoping for her to take the lead.

Elspeth looked around as she followed Linde through the burning city. Her blue eyes flickered around the scene, taking in the details of the destruction around her. A small litany of curses dropped from her tongue underneath her breath as she and her companion sought out the destination the Demon had given them. She stumbled over fallen debris as she looked around in horror of what was going on. Linde came to a stop down an alleyway, no different to the rest. The thick scent of smoke hung in the air like heavy storm clouds. The building appeared to be fairly unscathed despite for a few cosmetic flaws here and there.

Elspeth looked over to Linde when the other woman stopped. The captain gathered fairly quickly that she wanted Elsepth to take the lead and nodded silently, sneaking forward whilst being very aware of her armour. She was beginning to see the armour as more of a hindrance than anything else was was sorely tempted to shed the cumbersome pieces. However, now was not the time for such thoughts. Who knew what was inside of the building? Elspeth crept forward before pressing her back flat against the wall and easing the door open. In one swift movement, she slipped inside the building and was quickly met with the sharpened edge of a blade aiming for an eye. She twisted in a soundless movement, crouching and swivelling to stand behind the man threatening her. Before he could make a sound, Elspeth grabbed his wrist and tore the knife from his grip. Uttering a clumsy apology, she slashed the man’s neck, feeling his warm life blood slick through her fingers. Screwing up her face in disgust, the young woman dropped the shell of the assailant. She then wiped her sticky hands against any fabric her armour left uncovered, desperate to get rid of the cloying liquid that clung to her fingertips. She turned on her heel and came face to face with a group of men, closing ranks around her. Elspeth’s eyes shot around the room, each detail sinking into her mind.

She sighed heavily and placed her hands on her hips, slipping her work knife into her palm as she did so. She silently cursed her familiar motion as the sharper hunting knife sat beside the work knife and would have been much better to use. However, she could hardly go groping for it now as that would defeat the purpose of being careful and hiding her actions. Instead, she merely inwardly berated herself before lifting her eyes up to survey the group.

“Now, gents. You wouldn’t want to hurt a young lady such as myself, would you?” Elspeth simpered, placing a scared look on her face. Her ploy did nothing although she had expected much from it. A moment’s hesitation. That was all she needed after all. And that is what she received. A slight pause was given to the young woman freely as she shifted and threw her knife. The blade drove itself into a figure’s chest and an almost inhuman wail tore itself from his throat. The figure dropped to the floor, clutching his stomach as the other assailants rushed forward, snapped out of their daze. Elspeth moved quickly, delivering a swift swipe to another assailant’s face. He looked shocked but soon recovered enough to punch Elspeth’s armour, missing the unprotected area spectacularly. The young woman didn’t flinch as the man simply hurt his fist. A wail tore from his throat as he became more enraged and struck out at her face. His ragged dirty nails swiped across her features, creating long red lines along her face. A tiny gasp fell from Elspeth’s lips before she attacked back. The man fell to the ground in a heap, his neck broken from one quick powerful snap. The young woman paused, her eyes widening. A little curse fell from her lips, shock filling her. She hadn’t meant to kill him.

Taking this slight pause as an opening on of the remaining attackers leapt from behind, clawing at the young woman’s eyes. A quick twist and the man was on the floor, the air torn from his lungs. Elspeth dug her knee into the man’s chest, her hunting knife sitting in her hands. She lifted the knife a little, the light glimmering like poison.

“Now. What on earth....was that?”

"I was once told a story as a child that a Demon fell in love with an Angel. The story ended with the Demon's soul becoming purified by the Angel's love and the two were able to live together as one... I know it was just a tale of fantasy, a children's bedtime story... but could such a concept truly become a reality?"

Linde watched Elspeth deal with the men who attacked them, and she wandered passed the bodies towards the back of the room.

The Demon had sent them here for a reason, and these men were child's play for Elspeth. For what purpose would he send the two of them here if there wasn't anything challenging or dangerous? That was how he worked after all. He wanted them in the center of the danger to experience the true threat which faced them. He wanted them to experience the depths of the intrigue, the thrill of the hunt. He wanted them to experience it all. So why make them come here? What was there to gain? What was there to find.

She walked over one of the final bodies and looked to Elspeth to answer her question.

"I haven't the foggiest idea what's going on, but I know that there is more to this place than meets the eye."

Linde walked around the back of the room, analyzing everything in the room itself. She looked to the men Elspeth had killed and she began to see things in her mind unfolding at a rapid rate. Tiny details she'd normally never give a second look at began to scream 'IMPORTANT' to her as her mind began to piece together what was happening before their arrival.

Dirt, ash, and specs of wood under the fingernails... Toiling frantically with wooden surfaces, likely whatever he was setting on fire, before taking a stumble in the dirt outside on his way back to the hideout shortly after the fires started. Traces of oily residue on the fingertips... Likely from working with a chemical accelerant or catalyst. Powder residue and charring on the cuffs of sleeves... Was burned during primary ignition of the fires.

She looked to the next one, kneeling down to get a closer look.

Beard has traces of food crumbs and water marks with several wrinkles in the brow... Heavy drinker and binge eater, most likely from stress. Traces of brick dust on the heels of the boots and mild burn marks on the trim of pant legs... stood on the edges of rooftops lined with bricks to avoid walking on flammable and burning surfaces. Scrapes on the palms and finger tips... Fell off a roof and tried to grip the side of the building to slow his descent. But what was he suddenly running from, or who, to cause the damage in the first place?

She stood up and walked to the next.

Clothing is clear of ash and dirt... Remained behind during the implementation of the fires. Traces of ink on the inside of right hand middle finger... Drew up plans using ink from a pen.

She stood up and looked towards the other rooms.

She hadn't realized that this whole time she had been speaking aloud.

"We need to find whatever plans they drew up. Maybe then we'll get an idea of what they are up to."

"...Plans?" Elspeth asked, drawing herself up to her full height. She lightly scratched the back of her head, her long hair tangling around her fingers. Her eyes darted around the room quickly, finding nothing matching her idea of plans. Striding across the room, hopping around the scattered bodies, the captain searched for the appropriate papers.

"Are you quite sure there are plans?" Elspeth asked half heartedly. "I never heard the Demon mentioning them." She carried on, her fingers moving to her face. She carefully probed the cut that rested there although she didn't spend much time worrying about it. She seemed to heal rather quickly now, something she was thankful for. However, the time for musing about injuries would have to wait. They had plans to find.

Elspeth rummaged through the room, finding nothing of interest at all. A few scraps of paper, nothing more. Gathering up the scraps, she tried to reassemble the page they once formed.

"Do you think these are what we are looking for?" Elspeth asked, concentrating on her paper puzzle. "I hope it is...I don't want to waste my time and find that this is just some useless document."

Linde trotted over to inspect what Elspeth had found. She helped piece together the document, and it seemed to point towards a specific individual whose name had been smudged out. She grumbled a bit when she couldn't make it out, but it was a start. She turned to Elspeth.

I think you're on to something here. We need to find out whose name was on it. She said, turning towards the room and taking a look around.

She walked the entire area of the room but couldn't find anything, however, she stopped by the window and opened it to let a bit of light in. She leaned against the wall and a tiny cloud of dust flew up, which she watched suspiciously when it started making its way towards the back wall. She cocked her head slightly and stomped the ground, kicking up more dust. The dust trailed over towards the wall, but once it left the light she couldn't see it well enough to track it but she knew something was back there. She walked over and started knocking on the wall, testing for hollow spots, but it was the ground that spoke first of such a hidden device. She searched the floor and found a latch opening a chamber below, which led to a sheer drop with a rickety ladder going down into the darkness.

Well I dare say we found something. She said, more to herself than to anyone else.

She went down the ladder and found herself in near pitch black darkness. She searched the walls and was lucky enough to find a torch which she managed to light. She waited for Elspeth to come down before leading her through the corridor to what appeared to be a pair of large iron double doors. Linde opened it slowly and quietly, peeking inside before opening it all the way and giving Elspeth the all clear. They were standing near an underground canal, clearly man-made from ages passed, which still had a few boats on the water ready for delivery of goods that were in boxes on the right with a desk and workbench on the left side. It was definitely something to inspect, so Linde turned to her companion.

I'll search by the boats to see if I can't find something. I'm not sure what we'll find down here, but if you find anything at all pertaining to a single individual, let me know and we'll inspect it together. She said, turning towards the water and beginning her search.

Elspeth nodded before going over to the desk. This appeared to be a working trading business and if there was one thing she knew about, it was how to sort through trading documents. After all, traders had to be meticulous in their dealings, even the dodgy dealers. You simply had to know where all your stocks and money were at any given time, lest something be stolen. The young women rifled through the loose sheets of paper, looking for one thing in particular. As her fingertips hit a book rather than paper, she let out a small triumphant noise. The log book. This small book would give them a clear insight into what was going on and the inner workings of the group. Each purchase, sale and trip should be recorded within its pages. A trader, good and bad, need to keep track of their stocks.

With a small grin, Elspeth flickered open the cover. The book's pages fluttered as she sped through to the most recent deals and tradings. As her blue eyes skimmed across the page, her smiles began to fade and a frown began to take its place. Her eyes widened as she went through the book quickly, flicking quickly through the papers, hoping the name would disappear if she turned the pages. But alas, there lay the all too familiar signature in an array of different inks on a multitude of different pages. Elspeth cursed, gripping the book tightly as her face paled a little.

“I’ve found something.” Elspeth called quietly to Linde, her voice sounding rather strangled and caught up in her throat. She cleared her throat awkwardly before standing up. “I need to locate an old contact of mine, however. Luckily, she is in the area...” The young woman pulled herself to her feet before going to the door. "You can stay here if you wish, I wouldn't be long..." She opened the door, not waiting for an answer or for any indication of what Linde was going to do.

With that, Elspeth quick marched out of the building, working her way through the alleyways and streets until she reached a rather non descript looking house. She rapped her knuckles against the wood hard, three loud distinct knocks ringing out. Elspeth fidgeted as a woman answered the door. The woman was barely visible as she peeked round the heavy wooden door.

"...Elspeth? I-"

"Where is that rat hiding?" Elspeth spat out, her body language a mix of anger and fear.

"What? I don't underst-"

"Alani, we both know who I'm talking about, where is that little weasel of human being hiding now?" Elspeth cut in, her arms crossed and voice sounding as hard as granite.
