"The best way of keeping a secret is to pretend there isn't one"
{-Margaret Atwood}

Appearance:
Gemma is 5'3" and 122 lbs. She has short brown hair and brown eyes and has a slender build. She has a small scar on the lower right side of her back. Gemma also has both of her ears pierced but she wears her hair down so often that you can't really tell. Her clothing style is pretty casual. Jeans and comfortable shirts. She has a small gold seashell necklace that was a gift from her brother.

Secret:
Gemma's AP Anatomy teacher (who also taught her AP biology as a freshman) manipulated her into doing whatever he wanted her to do.

"I hope you can find it in your heart to be proud of the woman i have become in spite of you."
{ -Amanda Lovelace}

Personality: Gemma, despite her past, grew to be a strong girl. Meaning, she doesn't let anyone manipulate her anymore. She strives towards her own goals with her head held high. She's more outgoing than she was in high school. Primarily because going away to college gave her this feeling of freedom that she so desperately needed. She's also become more distrustful of people. She has to watch and listen in order to decide whether or not they're really trying to help her or if they want something from her. She's also become very reserved. She doesn't talk about her past or her opinions much.

Talents: When she went off to college, she found a love, skill, and necessity for Psychology and eventually made it her major. Well.. Psychiatry was her major but Psychology led up to it. She enjoys reading which always helped her in her studies. Now she also uses it as an escape from the past and to destress after a difficult school week.

Weaknesses: Due to her trust issues, she has trouble with people. She'll never let it show though. She's also become pretty awkward because she takes extra time in conversation to analyze people. Also, alcohol but she'll never admit to it.

Fears: Her biggest fear is probably her two big secrets getting out, but another fear of hers is that she will disappoint her brother. She's also frightened of thunder storms. They just shake her to her core.

β€œYour past is always your past. Even if you forget it, it remembers you.”
{ -Sarah Dessen}

History:
Gemma and her twin brother Callum, from birth, were inseparable. Their parents were often busy with work so they watched out for each other. They shared everything with each other. That is, up until high school. Her grades improved, his dropped. She was shooting for the stars--her intended star being medical school--he was sinking. At first, she attempted to help him. She tried to get him to talk and share with her the way he did as they were kids but he remained silent. Eventually her own problems came into play and she grew silent as well. They grew apart and passed each other at home like two ships in the night.

The problems I spoke up had to do with her 12th grade AP Anatomy teacher, Mr. Briggs. Freshman year, he had also taught her AP Biology and she greatly enjoyed his class and his help on homework when she needed it. By senior year, things had changed between them. At first, she enjoyed his class as she had in the past, but rarely asked for help as she found Anatomy to be incredibly interesting which allowed her to do more of the readings and even readings that weren't part of the class curriculum. The attention, she came to realize, was different. He spent most of class near her desk and when they were given an assignment or given group work, he purposely made her the odd one out so she would do her work with him. He would also watch her while she worked. She was completely oblivious to this at first. Then, when she was struggling in a particular area of their curriculum and had reached out to him for help. The way he chose to help her was... not the way a teacher should teach a student. At first, it was innocent lessons that quickly escalated to more intimate ones when he caught her kissing a female student--who happened to be her best friend--and grew jealous. He threatened not only to fail her but to expose her to the student body if she didn't do as he instructed her.

When she graduated, she went away to school and was able to escape that life. She tried to continue with her intended goal--being a doctor--but every class she took she was reminded of her lessons and it drove her away. On a whim, she took a psychology class and everything changed for her. Instead of caring for the body, she would care for the mind. But the whole situation made her cautious of people not only in friendships but in relationships. Also, she has created a slight problem for herself that she has to be mindful of. When her thoughts stray to the past, she takes to the bottle and an alcoholic psychiatrist isn't what people want.

{ -Kiera Cass}

X
Other: Now as she returns home, she hopes to maybe make amends with her brother, but she plans on staying as far away from Mr. Briggs as possible. She's not even sure he still teaches at the high school, but she isn't going to take any chances. She is unsure how people are going to react to her change in career, but she's not going to let anyone influence her again. She would make her own choices and no one was going to change that.

Fire it Up - Modest Mouse

In hindsight, sitting so close to the fire was a terrible idea. Because now, Flora was dealing with a thousand whispering voices telling her to stick her hand in it.

The voices hadn't been this bad in a long time. It seemed almost fitting: now that she was back in the town she grew up in, her condition was getting to be as severe as it was when she was in high school. It was weird. Maybe she was just nervous.

She was doing all she could to feel normal, short of just going home and sleeping it off. She had her headphones on one ear, playing soothing music and she had pulled her moth out of her bag and was trying to focus on it. At first, she had tried to be subtle about it, but she quickly stopped caring about how weird she looked staring at a bug. Her eyes traced over the familiar curve of the wings and fuzzy abdomen. She wondered not for the first time if it would be as soft to the touch as it looked. She eventually went to what she usually did when she studied her moth like this: trying to think of names for it. She would probably never settle on a name, because coming up with potentials was just too fun.

After a little while, she was pulled from her thoughts by Lina getting everyone's attention. At that point, the top name contenders were Coco, Pickles, and Zacrux the Abominable. Flora put the moth back in her bag (hoping no one would question her about it) and looked up, finally taking in her surroundings.

Noticing what Lina was carrying, she smiled.

"Ooh! Are s'mores happening? Awesome!"

Hopefully she could distract herself tonight.

ImageImageCallum took a seat by the fire while Alex went to talk to some of the others. He smiled at his love as he moved, happy to see that a lot of the stress from earlier had left his form. He still looked skeletal in the dying light of day beside the glowing embers of the fire, but he looked better still. Happier. Callum took a deep breath in and let it out through his nose. At least one thing from his past was dealt with. There was still the matter of his estranged sister. His dark eyes darted to the other side of the camp where Gemma was speaking quietly to a distraught Dettie. There was a distance between them that Callum was sure hadn't been there years before. He supposed it had to do with the fact that Dettie had moved before senior year had ended, something that was no secret around their circles. Then they were standing and joined by Lina and Cas and partook in a group hug that almost made Callum ache. He never had that many friends. Mostly just Gemma and Alex. Cas... he could consider Cas a friend too couldn't he?

When they group moved forward, Lina moving to collect some things from where they had placed their stuff, Callum took the opportunity to stand talk to Gemma. "Gem? Can I talk to you a second?" Gemma's smiling face turned towards him and her smile fell. So did his heart. Was she that upset with him? Did he hurt her that much with the distance? Then again, she had pushed him away just as far. They spent their high school years at arms length. She nodded and moved towards him. "What's up, Cal? Where've... um.. Where've you been?"

"Traveling around. Seeing the world. Taking on a new hobby." His eyes moved to Alex as he spoke, remembering the similar conversation they had, but he hadn't told him about his camera. Now that he thought about it, this would be the perfect place to pull it out and take some shots...Later though. "I don't know if I'm staying for very long, but I wanted to fix whatever happened with us first." He looked back at his sister's, her eyes nearly identical to his.

Gemma fidgeted before him. "Cal, there's nothing to fix. We just... needed the space? You know, to work out the comings and goings of high school." She wouldn't look at him. Jesus had it been that bad?

Callum ran his hands through his short hair and sighed. "You and I both know that's not true. I said some pretty shity things to you and I wanted to apologize. You were trying to help me, but I wasn't ready to let you in. I don't... I don't really know why considering we've let each other in practically since we were born but this felt different." He looked at her and smiled softly. "I'm sorry, Gem. I would like to... let you in again. I need my sister back."

There was a shining in Gemma's eyes as he spoke. She was thinking about the last time they had spoken, when she had pushed him away as well and she shook her head. "I'm sorry, too, Cal. But it was the same for me then there were... are things that I can't seem to share.. With anyone let alone you so please don't take it personally, but.." Her eyes snapped to Lina, laughing and handing out the s'mores supplies. "I forgive you. And if you forgive me, then.. Maybe we.. Maybe I can open up a bit more to you too. I would like my brother back very much."

In an answer, he took ahold of her arms and crushed her to him, wrapping her up tight. "Of course, Gem." He said into her hair. They stayed like that a moment taking in the familiar scents of each other which sounds totally weird, but when you've been away from someone that felt like half of you, you tend to get a little clingy. He released her and held her out at arms length so he could drop a bomb--or what he expected to be a bomb--on her. "Gemma, I like boys. Well, and girls, but right now, and hopefully always, there's a specific guy that holds onto my heart."

Gemma tossed her head back and laughed. At first, Callum thought she didn't believe him or that she thought he was a freak for it. But she looked at him and raised an eyebrow. "So? You thought that mattered to me? That I'd think any different of you." At that same moment, something flashed--like realization--in her eyes and she confessed, "I like girls. Well and guys, but mostly.. girls." Her eyes flashed back to Lina and then to Dettie, and she realized how confused she was getting between the two. She wanted to fix things with Dettie, but at the same time, Lina.. there was something there. Something Gemma couldn't ignore.

Callum grinned. "We're a couple of bi twins aren't we?" Gemma laughed again, "Guess so. It's Alex? Isn't it? It's been like that for a while. I thought there was something more than friendship between you two, but I wasn't sure you were ready to say anything. Or maybe my Gaydar was broken." He smiled sheepishly at her and that was all the answer she needed. "And you were into Dettie. Still are?" Gemma nodded, but it was hesitant, he could tell. "There someone else?" This time she didn't bother to hesitate. "Ready to share?" She shook her head, but her eyes, her gaze, told him all he needed to know and she knew it too. She was looking right at Lina. There was a softness there that reminded him of how she used to talk about Dettie and to Dettie.

Suddenly, Gemma moved towards the group and grabbed two plastic red cups from beside the cooler. She grabbed a bottle of whiskey, unscrewed the top, and poured a shot's worth into them. She took one for herself and handed the other to her brother. "To Twins." She said, lifting her cup in a toast. Callum tilted his head, a gleam in his eyes as he mirrored her movements. "To love." She took a deep breath and downed the shot, exhaling sharply at the burn. He smirked and drank his too, before grabbing a beer instead of pouring another shot like his sister. He tried to remember the last time she had seen her drink and couldn't. What he could remember, she never touched the stuff.

Gemma could remember the last time she drank. Or at least, the last time she had gotten drunk, and only the beginning of it. She woke up the next day so sick, Lina spent the day holding her hair back while she emptied the contents of her stomach into the porcelain god. With any luck, that wouldn't repeat, but she needed some liquid courage to sort together her thoughts. Or better yet, a distraction from them entirely. She poured another shot into her cup before moving towards Lina and the others. "Come on, Cal!" She called over her shoulder. "We have s'mores."

She sat down between Lina and Dettie. "Hit me with something sweet Lina."

Callum shook his head and took a look at the can of beer in his hand. He put in back in the cooler and made his way over to Alex. The last thing he wanted to do tonight was tempt his love--his boyfriend? The word sent chills up his spine--with another addictive substance when he was doing so well. Hopefully, none of the others would try. "Hey Billie, Alex. There are s'mores over yonder. We should go and partake before the feast is over." He had just barely been able to refrain from calling Alex his prince. That shot was stronger than he had expected.

Having the three near really helped. When they had her wrapped in their arms it was almost easy to just forget all the bad stuff. Dettie would of been content just staying like that all night, but eventually they broke off. 'Thanks guys...' She said, voice already sounding more like normal. Eventually the girls spread out, leaving Dettie to lean on Cas. She bobbed her head to the music Gemma put on and laughed at the sight that was Lina.

She sat sown again, this time watching Gemma go. As much as Dettie wanted the other girl by her side she knew Gemma needed a long talk with her brother. Still, dead mom or not Dettie would smack him if he hurt Gemma again.

She tore her eyes away to look at Lina now. 'Need any help Li?'

Gavin waved Lina off as she left. Heaven knows he was glad she was being more social with the people she used to know. He hoped everything worked out over there. He grinned when he was the four person hug. Good. He wasn't the fondest of Dettie, though he didn't out right hate her, buthe knew Gemma was a good person. And Cas for the matter. All of them were good people when it came down to it.

His attention was turned back to Billie and Alex with the use of one name. When they mentioned her his whole body snapped towards them. God, why didn't he expect this? A lot of people here knew Patton. She was popular and it was idiotic to think they wouldn't ask after her. Vaguely he wondered if anyone thought it was strange they weren't side by side now. In high school they were practically joint at the hip.

Gavin squirmed. It would be so easy to tell them exactly what happened. But then there would be questions, and looks of pity everyone staring at him. And there was no way he could explain that it was his fault she died. He was the one who got her pregnant at such a young age. 'Umm....,' He said finally. 'It's....complicated. I don't really wanna talk about it...Sorry.'

"Yup," Lina managed to say with the bag pinched between her teeth, giving Flora a little smile. "So are you appointing yourself head chef of the s'mores or...?" Lina turned to the voice, smiling wider but as a result having the bag fall from in between her teeth and causing her to fumble with the bag before actually catching it. She breathed out a sigh of relief both when she managed not to drop the marshmallows and when Ellie took some of the stuff. "Haha yeah, I have been training in the mountains with s'mores Yoda, you know the regular stuff." she laughed opening a pack of those fluffy clouds. In reality Lina was trying to avoid that subject. She knew people were going to ask her about that but she just wasn't ready for everyone to know about what she did just yet. For a moment Lina glanced over towards Gavin and saw a rather uncomfortable look on his face. She hoped he was okay.

Eyes back on Ellie, Lina playfully bumped her shoulder against hers. "So what have you been up to all these years?" Lina began opening up the other two packs of marshmallows as she listened. There was no doubt that Lina missed Ellie but then again it was only natural since they were so close and she hoped that they still could be. Ellie was Lina's home girl. "Need any help Li?" Her looked over towards Dettie as she nodded. "Oh! Dettie, yes! I almost forgot," she paused for a second as she struggled with the last bag before finally popping it open. "Ha, gotcha." but at last Lina had gotten distracted. "Oh yeah, sticks." she smiled sheepishly at Dettie. "Can't roast marshmallows without sticks, mind getting me some? And can you take Gavin with you for some help?" upon her last request Lina hoped that it would help Gavin get out of an awkward situation. She always looked out for her cousin.

When Gemma came over Lina couldn't help but smile at her. "Coming right up, beautiful. As soon as Dettie comes back with those sticks." with a childish grin on her face Lina plopped down in between Gemma and Ellie. She popped open her wine cooler and down about half of it then stretched her arm over Gemma's shoulders. "Wanna have a sip? It's really good." Lina asked, just her being nice as always but it really did taste amazing. Perfect balance of sweet and tart.

As Lina finished preparing the s'mores for everyone, Gemma looked over and saw Ellie had been sitting on the other side of Lina. "Hey, Ellie," she greeted cheerily. Normally, talking to someone she wasn't used to talking to was awkward, but the cup in her hand held more than Whiskey. It held courage. Which.. could very well get her into trouble, but at that moment, it didn't totally register to her that something bad could happen. She wasn't drunk, only lightly buzzed, but the warmth it brought her core felt safe and nice. "How've you been?" She didn't know the girl very well but they had a couple classes together in high school so she wasn't a total stranger.

Dettie, had asked Lina if she needed assistance so she disappeared to go find the sticks they needed in order to roast the marshmallows. Gemma mentally facepalmed, she thought she had packed the roasting sticks normally used, but now that she thought about it, she could still see them in the box on the shelf. Oh well. Now that Dettie was gone, her left side was devoid of warmth making her shiver slightly. Gemma reached out and plucked a marshmallow from one of the open bags and low key hoped Lina would notice, but she was probably too busy.

When Lina had finished with the preparations, she sat down between Ellie and Gemma, waiting for Dettie and Gavin to return with some sticks. The word "beautiful" echoed in Gemma's head and sent heat rushing to her cheeks. She smiled shyly at Lina. The scent of roses and vanilla as well as the earthy smell of the forest filled the air. She actually felt herself leaning towards Lina to lay her head on her shoulder, but Lina beat her to it and put an arm around her, sending another shiver up her spine. A bottle of fruity alcohol was stuck before her, an offering from Lina. Gemma smirked and lifted her cup. "I'll try it, if you have a sip of this."

He had been right about hearing something about Patton, then. He still couldn't quite remember what it was, though. Still, either way, he wasn't going to grill Gavin about it- or probably even bring it up again. It was clear it was uncomfortable for him, and Alex had been asked enough uncomfortable questions lately to know how unpleasant it was. A distraction arrived in the form of what appeared to be a slightly tipsy Callum, one that made Alex grin. Billie followed them over to the fire, starting to talk to Callum. Alex sat down at the fire, glancing around at everyone there. They were all familiar faces, faces he hadn't seen in years. Some he barely recognised, some had barely changed.

There was a certain peace to the evening, everybody just sitting around talking and chilling. At the mention of a party, he'd been nervous- unsure of what exactly to expect. But he could handle this. This was everything he'd hoped for. Callum back by his side. Old friends surrounding him. And no pressure- no pressure to drink, no pressure to lie about what he'd been up to, no pressure to hide. No pressure to do anything but just... chill.

Ellie followed Lina closer to the fire, laughing at her comment. "I knew it!" She declared loudly, laughing a little. God, she'd missed Lina more than she'd realised. A lot more. In the final few days before the fire, she'd started to realise that being popular didn't necessarily mean having lots of friends. Because the minute you started to fall, they would all turn their backs to you and let you fall. Lina, Jasper, and Dettie had been some of very few truly good friends she'd had, and they'd been there for her even after her fall. And now they were here again. "Oh, you know, college. Trying to make life decisions when you can't even pick what shoes to wear out on a Saturday night," she remarked lightly.

Gemma arrived then as Ellie reached over to get a beer. Ellie smiled at her as she sat down on the other side of Lina. "I'm good, Gemma, and you?" She asked. She'd shared a couple of classes with the other girl, but couldn't say she knew her all that well. She took a mouthful out of the beer, swallowing as Lina put her arm around Gemma. Something about that troubled her, something she couldn't quite put a finger on. She drained more of her beer, suddenly wishing she had something stronger.

Her eyes lingered on Cas and the stupid jacket. Anger flared in her chest. Here, she'd have backup. Here, she'd have people who would question his actions as much as she did.

"Hey, Cas, can I ask you something?" She asked, running a finger around the top of her bottle. "That jacket looks awfully like one of Jordan's. Care to enlighten me on that?" She asked, keeping her tone light and pleasant, but not allowing it to reach her eyes. She took another mouthful out of her beer without breaking eye contact.

Looking at the cup that was held in front of her just like she had just done with Gemma, Lina smiled and took a small gulp. It literally hit her like a lighter to her mouth. When the inside of her cheeks began to burn a couple of seconds later is when she swallowed the amber liquid and coughed a bit. "Whoa, " she spoke in between small coughs. "That's potent." Feeling the burn in her face, Lina laughed her less than graceful drinking off before turning back to Gemma. "Your turn." the bottle was lifted to Gemma's lips. "Though, now I don't think it's fair because mines isn't as strong as yours." Lina quirked her eyebrow up with a small smirk upon her lips but her attention was quickly whisked away by Ellie who had engaged in a conversation with Cas.

Lina gulped, her hand slightly gripping the other side of Gemma's arm, feeling the slight goosebumps on her skin. The conversation started out simple enough but then bad turned to worse. Lina wanted to shut this down fast, it's wasn't the time nor place for this. "Guys, really? We are here for Lisa, can we not right now?" Lina looked towards Ellie first, giving her a pleading look. She was one of her best friends and of course, she would have her back but she really didn't want to get into an argument right now. Lina then looked over to Cas. He was alright in her book, but now he had annoyed her just a bit but he was still a good kid. Plus he is really close with Dettie and she didn't want to do anything to make her hate her. "Please?" By now, Lina hoped to god that Dettie would come back soon.

Gemma felt a slow grin form on her face as Lina took a sip from her cup. The look on the girl's face said it was stronger than she would like and it probably burned going down. It did for Gemma, but she enjoyed the burn. As Lina lifted the bottle to Gemma's lips, her eyes didn't leave Lina's face. Not even to look down at the bottle. She raised a hand and took it, tipping it up until the fruity alcohol splashed into her mouth. Lina was right. It wasn't as strong as Gemma's drink, but it was a wine cooler so it shouldn't surprise her. Gemma gave a small smile. "I like it though. It's very sweet. Sometimes you just need something sweet." She wasn't sure she was talking about the s'mores, the alcohol, or Lina.

Then the drama started. Gemma rolled her eyes. Neither Cas nor Ellie were really close friends of hers, but they were friends with her friends and so, she held tight to Lina to keep her from jumping in. Whatever was going on between the two, it wasn't going to be stopped by someone else. Not without it getting worse. Still.. "Guys... we're here for Lisa. If you have problems with each other, take it somewhere else." She looked at Cas, the alcohol in her system giving her some courage. "And don't pretend you weren't looking for this all night." When Cas revealed he was a stripper, Gemma wasn't sure if she was really surprised. Cas always had a need for a spotlight and a youth pastor was not going to cut it. She knew a reaction is what the two wanted, so Gemma simply didn't react. Instead, she took another swig from her up, warmth corsing through her once more.
