I glared at the pair of them. "Cute. Now stop getting in the way of the sun." I lay back and refused to look at her. I couldn't let her see my jealousy, she'd tease me endlessly. Even worse, she'd realize she was in a position of power. "I heard they served really great drinks all the way over in the other side of the city." I said pointedly. "Why doesn't Jack here treat you to one? Or was it Julian? Sorry, I can never keep track of Thalia's friends." I emphasized the last word to imply a total lie. But I didn't care. I didn't want to see James' face anymore. He looked exactly like the type of guy who knew all about Dante.

James seemed to get in turbo-mode by Alec's cold behaviour. I felt his hand tighten around my waist momentarily, his eyes darkening, but before I could pinpoint what was wrong, he lit up again and turned to me, slipping his hand off. "Well, we're obviously disturbing your brother, wouldn't you prefer we got into the water? It's way too hot to be sunbathing, and frankly you don't need it- Chicago seems to be a great place for tanning, huh?" He pointed at my sun-kissed skin.
Truth was, working at the docks had done that for me. Alec had had the courtesy to let me have that one thing and didn't tell our parents. "Sure," I said, beginning to slide my dress over my head, "That sounds great."

Thalia's dress dropped on my face. I froze for a moment as I was enveloped in the smell of her favourite perfume. Then I pushed it off just in time to watch them run into the sea, holding hands like a couple. My eyes narrowed. Stupid, stupid, stupid... I didn't know who I was calling stupid, her, me, or the situation. I got up. James was right, it really was too hot to sunbathe. I rolled my shoulders and walked to the shade of a nearby kiosk.
I watched her splash him, laughing. My mouth tightened. I turned away and ordered a can of coke. If I had to, I would just walk away. I would not lose my temper in public, not over her.

James wrapped his arms around my knees and lifted me up in his arms while I was laughing way too much, hoping to draw Alec's attention. "Ready?" he asked, eyes glistening and his hair wet and falling in his eyes. I nodded, flashing him a smile as he dunked me into the water, laughing warmly himself. When he pulled me up again, he leaned in and I felt his arms holding me again, pushing me closer to him. Our half-naked bodies touched underwater and his lips brushed my ear as he whispered,
"So...a Chicago girl, in Florida who loves Hemingway and is astoundingly beautiful...and surprisingly all alone- save for the grumpy Abercrombie model of a brother. What's your story?"

I felt a timid tap on my shoulder. I turned around to see a blonde girl smiling awkwardly at me. She seemed self conscious and kept her eyes turned down. "Hey, you dropped a couple bills.." She held them out.
"Thanks so much!" I smiled broadly. "Lemme treat you to something."
"No, no, thank you but there's no need, anyone would do the same.." A light blush was appearing high on her cheekbones and she readjusted the beach bag in her shoulder. She was interesting. Someone to keep my mind off Thalia, who was wrapped around book boy. Someone to show I was unflustered.
"I insist.. You like coke or sprite? I've got a place for your towel if you want, too. The beach is busy but I fought for a space near enough to the water."

"Long and tedious, I assure you." I said absent-mindedly watching a blonde girl approaching Alec. A blondie. Again? God, he was predictable. Nevertheless, I did feel a stab of jealousy inside me. She was so...different from me. While I was looking at them, James had been busy stroking my shoulder gently, when his lips brushed my neck. He caught me off guard and it showed, because he paused and glanced at me.

I looked at the water for a moment and caught eyes will Thalia. But she broke eye contact to glance at James who was busy..KISSING HER FUCKING NECK. I instantly bristled and my grip on my can tightened to a dangerous level. But a quiet voice brought me down to earth a little. "Hey.. Are you okay?" Blondie looked at me concernedly and I became aware of the angry murmurs of the customers behind me waiting to buy something.
"Yeah.. Yeah.." I allowed her to lead me out of the queue.
"Seriously? Do you need anything?" Her eyes were wide. Well done, Alec, you scared this poor girl.
"I'd like to know your name." I tried a smile and it worked perfectly. She looked down again.
"I'm Christy."
I handed her her scrunched can of sprite. "I'm Alec. Let's go find my towel."

I wanted to push him away instantly, but I knew Alec would be looking and hell, did I want him to see this. So, I lowered my eyelids and gripped James tightly as his soft lips caressed my skin. I let him go on until he his kisses reached my jawline, but then I stopped him and pulled away, flustered. "I...I'm so sorry, James," I realised I must have appeared so easy to him. We were practically strangers. I looked at him, closing my mouth.
His eyes were worried and earnest, searching my face. His lips were trembling with anticipation, but he made no move towards me.
On second thought...
"Thalia...I know what you're thinking. But there's something about you, an aura of...mystery and there's nothing I love more than mysteries. I'm drawn to you. I never meant to offend, I'm just afraid you'll be snatched away before I have time to unravel you." he said it all quickly, without even one bump in voice, breathlessly.
I let a few moments to pass in silence. Then I held my hand out and reached for his underwater. "I'm not going anywhere yet, James," I assured him.
A smile had started to blossom but then stopped abruptly. "Yet?"
I tilted my head and blew him a kiss, "Leave something in the dark, I thought you loved mysteries."

I led Christy to my raggedy old towel. "Here we are." I glanced at the water and for a fraction of a second, I saw her blow him a kiss. There was a smile on her face I had though that was only reserved for me when we were alone.... Guess not. I turned my back and helped Christy settle down. She was flustered. It was like she had never spoken to a guy before. Cute.
Then I noticed Thalia's dress on my towel. "Oh wow, you must be wondering whose this is. It's my sister's. She's in the water with a...friend. Hopefully they don't bother us."
Christy smiled instead of answering and pulled off her beach dress.
Whoa. She had an awesome body. I allowed myself to stare a little.. Hopefully she would see.

I allowed James to hold my hand as we walked out, drenched in water. I saw Alec had invited his new friend over to occupy our space and breathe our oxygen. He gestured to her and she was only too pleased to oblige.
"Who's the chick?" James asked as we approached. I shrugged in reply before I halted, narrowing my eyes once the little butterfly took her dress off. I was about to go close Alec's mouth in case a fly flew in or something.
Again, I noted how different we were. Where I was all curves and bumps she was thin and angular, muscular. She had that 'cute' vibe around her. Had his taste changed that much or was he simply playing with me back then?
Face it, Thalia, you have no chance. He's over you.
"Hey, guys." I said loudly when we finally got to them, throwing myself almost on Alec. "Move it, bro, leave some space for the rest of us, will you?"

Of course, now she comes. Her body shimmered as she dropped down next to me, flicking me with little drops of salt water. "There isn't meant to be space for you, Thalia, I told you we're not sharing this towel."
"It's okay, Alec, I have an extra if you need." Christy was already digging through her bag. God, normally I'd like generous girls, but really? Christy handed the towel over to Thalia and settled back to hide her face behind her Sprite. I turned towards her, halfway turning away from Thalia. "Tell me Christy.. What sports do you do?"
"Oh.. I like gymnastics."
"You're a cheerleader?"
"Not yet." She gifted me with a real look to the eyes. "I'm concentrating in my running, I'm not sure If they'd take me in on the squad. It takes a lot of.. Yelling."

"Oh, I know an activity that could teach you all about yelling..." I suggested, still grinning at her. James raised his brow and I winked, causing him to chuckle as he sat on the sand next to me, wrapping one arm around my shoulders. I glanced lovingly at his face, then shot a daring look to Alec. "I'm James," he said cheerfully, waving with his spare hand, " Nice to meet you," he added. I didn't let my eyes waver from Alec's, curious as to what he would do about James' arm...he had never been the accepting type.

"Hi James." Christy's eyes fell again. Man, she really was shy. "What sport are you talking about?" She asked Thalia innocently, looking at her shoulder. So was I. What the hell was he doing, holding her like that? What was SHE doing, letting him? They were strangers! Right? I scowled silently at James. Maybe he'd get the message. If not, I'd have to be a little less subtle.

James' smile broadened and he brought his head forward, his arm around me never once falling, though he extended his hand towards her. 'And what's your name?', he asked. Mildly ignoring him, I leaned forward, strands of wet hair falling on my bare shoulder which then touched Alec's- purposefully of course- and stared at her with feigned kindness. 'Oh dear, you do get innuen- my, but you don't!', I then turned to Alec, eyes widening in worry, 'Are you sure she's not fourteen, Alec? Despite its infamous lenience, California has to punish statutory rape as well.'

Christy's hand fell limp in James'. She looked at Thalia in hurt confusion, not understanding the insult was aimed at me, not her. "I'm sixteen." She said to no one in particular, looking back at the ground.
"And you look it," I said as kindly as I could, shooting daggers at my step sister. "Thalia is just on her period today. Julian here, won't be left short today though, don't you worry about that."
There was an uncomfortable silence, as Christy didn't answer. "I should go," she said, in her small voice that I wasn't sure was endearing or annoying. She stood up, her towel messily piled in her arms.
I scrambled up with her. "Wait, no, don't go Christy!" I turned on Thalia. "Apologize."

I watched the girl scramble to her feet with a pang of guilt, but Alec's commanding tone and his frantic standing up did more than enough to extinguish it. 'Why?,' I asked, catching James' confused gaze from the corner of my eye, 'You never did.'
James behind me stood up, shifting glances between the three if us trying to decipher whatever was going on between Alec and me. The silence stretched on for a few moments before he muttered, 'Name's James, ombré.'
Bilingual, I thought, pondering on whether he knew more synonyms for bastard than I did, currently the one word that befitted Alec. 'But of course, how could I forget? Wasn't worth it in the end, was it, Alec?'

I stared at Thalia with stony eyes. "I have nothing to apologize for." I lied coolly. "You, on the other hand--"
Christy was beginning to move away. I gave up on Thalia and grabbed her hand. "Wait, Christy, please. Just a second."
"I should go." She looked on the verge of tears. "I'm obviously in the middle of something and.." She trailed off, no excuse coming to her mind.
"Look," I said, turned my back to the other two and lowering my voice. "I like you. I'd like to see you again before I go home. What about dinner tonight?"
"I don't know.."
I intertwined my fingers in hers and lifted them to my lips. I brushed my lips off her knuckles. "Please?"
There it was again, the faint blush high on her cheekbones. "....Okay."
I took my phone out and handed it to her. "Give me your number. I'll text you the details this afternoon."
A silly smile was playing on her lips as she tapped in her digits. "There." She took a step back. "I'll see you tonight, then."
I grinned at her. "Tonight." I watched her head off, giving a cute little wave as she did so, unwilling to turn back to Thalia and her idiot.

Son of a bitch, I though, the ripple of his words still a painful blow in the face. I almost raised my arm to hit him, lacking any other way to hurt him, when I felt a soft touch on my shoulder, then fingers sliding around my waist. 'So,' James began, 'that was unexpectedly...bold of you, Thalia,' he murmured, gently turning me to face him. I did so reluctantly. 'However, I think I have an idea, and I'd like to follow your terribly bad at memorising brother's lead and invite you out to dinner, what do you say?'
There was something in the way he looked into my eyes that made me realise two things; I would end up hurting James. And two, he would not be my only victim. And this is all because of you, Evans.
I leaned in to kiss his cheek lightly, sparing but a backward glance towards Alec to make sure he'd see it before I smiled broadly, 'My place, tonight. What do you think?'
As if he would even think of refusing.

"I'm sorry, Thalia, but you'll have to find some other place to mess about. Cristy is coming over tonight." I picked up my things, not looking at her, and straightened up. "After all, I called it first." I smiled smugly, my childish logic pleasing me. "Unless you think a double date would be fun." I laughed at the absurdity of it. "See you tomorrow morning." I left before she could answer, the image of James kissing her neck burnt into the back of my mind.

It was 8:30, and dinner was nearly ready. I had prepared one of the only dishes I knew -spaghetti- and splurged on a nice bottle of wine. I planned to take her out for ice cream later. It would be nice. Pleasant. Christy would be cute and cuddly, and say all the right things and look the right way. It was just.. I felt for her what I should probably feel for my step sister. But lately that's how I felt about all girls who weren't Thalia. I just had to man up and get over it. And why not with Cristy?

Alec seemed to had forgotten certain things she was about to remind him of. Nonetheless, she had two guys to impress tonight, and she would toy with them both. Because she felt like it. And because she wanted to make him feel the way she had. So, tonight she would be her best self. Pleasant, funny, intriguing. Perhaps she would even compliment the blondie.
At around eight, I started getting ready. Something simple seemed the best option, an electric blue flowy dress, the edges of which brushed my thighs. Sleeves that fell to my arms, past my shoulders, leaving patches of tanned skin to show. But my favourite touch was the perfume; I'd play a little game with Alec's mind. I listened carefully for his steps descending downstairs, then tiptoed into his room where I snatched his cologne, breezy and cool, not before I sprayed his entire bedroom with my own perfume. Even if he did bring her in there, he'd only be able to think about me. I lightly spread some cologne on the back of my neck and ears, then set the bottle down. One last touch, wrapping the shirt he had laid out to wear on his bed in a cloud of flowery perfume.
Not long after, the bell rang. Not knowing which of our dates it was, I walked eagerly, almost hopping in anticipation and opened the door wide. Then stepped aside with a slight tilt of the head, then a hesitant-looking grin, as a very sharp-dressed and handsome James entered. In his hands, roses. Oh no, they're red too.
'Beautiful flowers, for a beautiful flower,' he said as he handed me the bouquet, fragrant and overused, like his words. What was next? Did it hurt when I fell from heaven? In any case, I acted surprised and pleased, edging towards him to give him a light kiss in the cheek before I took him from the hand, leading him to the kitchen, 'I'm so glad you made it,' I said, 'another afternoon with my brother would seem like a nightmare.'

The kitchen door opened. "Thalia, now is not the time." I said irritably, stirring the creamy white sauce that was to go over the spaghetti. "Aren't you running late?" A soft fragrance floated through the air, masking the warm aroma of the sauce for a moment. I closed my eyes for a second and then looked up. She stood in the doorway, a shock of red roses in her arms. They contrasted sharply against her dress, a dress that defined the parts of her I didn't want to notice, not now. I was about to tell her, drawlingly, that it was generally the pants in the relationship that bought flowers when I realised James was behind her. I never bought her flowers.
"You're not serious." I said, voice flat. "Get out. Christy will be here shortly and we were planning to enjoy the night." I can't do that if you're here with that damned perfume.
The bell rang. "That's her. Get lost."

James shifted his weight uneasily from one foot to the other. 'Let me take these and put them in the water for you, alright?' he said, taking the flowers from my hands and I nodded as if I hadn't heard Alec at all. Or seen him. With that damned wet hair. And those eyes. Looking at me flaring in anger. 'Thank you, love, there is a vase right the- oh, you got it, that's it. Please, do have a seat, I'll be with you in just a moment, James.'
I realized Alec was still looking at me expectantly and I turned around with an innocent look. 'But, brother, you did suggest a double date, did you not? And in any case, I would love to see what that minor did to bewitch you- usually you prefer feistier, though your taste has suffered direly as of late, it's true.' I flashed him a venomous smile before I walked over to the stove, looking over what he had been cooking.
'Ah, Italian, my favourite. You're just the best!' I strode over to him and kissed him lightly on the cheek, lingering long enough for him to smell the scent of his own perfume before I ruffled his hair in a gesture of peaceful truce. I turned to James. 'Now, you, sir, are in for a treat. I have my own surprise, and trust me, however impressive Alec's culinary skills are, mine surpass them- though that is no surprise.'

Cristy slipped into the kitchen. She wore a light pink shirt, ruffled in the front, with jeans that fit her like a second skin. Her hair was tied up and she had done something to her eyes, something that made them even bigger. She could not have looked more different from Thalia. It was wonderful.
"Hey!" I smiled, as I took off the stupid apron I had on to protect my shirt. "How are you?"
"I'm good. The front door was open." She said, apologetically, as if she did something wrong. She took in Thalia and James, her eyes widening slightly. "Oh. Hi Thalia." Her eyes met mine. In them questions burned.
"Thalia is gate crashing." I said with a grimace. Cristy smiled nervously at my step sister before setting her bag down and coming to my side. "I'm sure it'll be fun. Let me help." She took the wooden spoon from my hand. "Oh. You have a bit of.." She rubbed a thumb across my cheek. She showed it to me. It was red, like Thalia's lips.
"My sister kissed my cheek as a sign of a truce." I sighed. "I'm still not sharing the food with her." I turned off the heat under the sauce. "There, done. Sit yourself down, and allow me to serve you."
"There's enough food for us all." She murmured, ignoring me.
"But not enough wine. There's a great restaurant down the street. They'll be fine there."

'Oh, we don't need wine, Alec, James can't drink, have to keep his thoughts clear for the upcoming basketball match, right James?' I asked, turning to him as I slipped to the chair opposite Alec's, my hand grasping his lightly. James was graciously ignoring the sharky remarks exchanged between us. 'It's not that big, but it could be important, so...yes, I'd say I would have to stick to some water or, worst case scenario, orange juice.'
I averted my eyes and turned my gaze towards the blondie. Her sight almost made my stomach churn. It was as if he had chosen on purpose the exact type of girls I hated. 'You look pretty, Christy. Doll-like, almost. Are you familiar with Barbies? You share an uncanny resemblance.'
James had simply elected to sip water from his tall glass next to me, squeezing my hand gingerly.
