Truth was, working at the docks had done that for me. Alec had had the courtesy to let me have that one thing and didn't tell our parents. "Sure," I said, beginning to slide my dress over my head, "That sounds great."

I watched her splash him, laughing. My mouth tightened. I turned away and ordered a can of coke. If I had to, I would just walk away. I would not lose my temper in public, not over her.

"So...a Chicago girl, in Florida who loves Hemingway and is astoundingly beautiful...and surprisingly all alone- save for the grumpy Abercrombie model of a brother. What's your story?"

"Thanks so much!" I smiled broadly. "Lemme treat you to something."
"No, no, thank you but there's no need, anyone would do the same.." A light blush was appearing high on her cheekbones and she readjusted the beach bag in her shoulder. She was interesting. Someone to keep my mind off Thalia, who was wrapped around book boy. Someone to show I was unflustered.
"I insist.. You like coke or sprite? I've got a place for your towel if you want, too. The beach is busy but I fought for a space near enough to the water."

"Yeah.. Yeah.." I allowed her to lead me out of the queue.
"Seriously? Do you need anything?" Her eyes were wide. Well done, Alec, you scared this poor girl.
"I'd like to know your name." I tried a smile and it worked perfectly. She looked down again.
"I'm Christy."
I handed her her scrunched can of sprite. "I'm Alec. Let's go find my towel."

His eyes were worried and earnest, searching my face. His lips were trembling with anticipation, but he made no move towards me.
On second thought...
"Thalia...I know what you're thinking. But there's something about you, an aura of...mystery and there's nothing I love more than mysteries. I'm drawn to you. I never meant to offend, I'm just afraid you'll be snatched away before I have time to unravel you." he said it all quickly, without even one bump in voice, breathlessly.
I let a few moments to pass in silence. Then I held my hand out and reached for his underwater. "I'm not going anywhere yet, James," I assured him.
A smile had started to blossom but then stopped abruptly. "Yet?"
I tilted my head and blew him a kiss, "Leave something in the dark, I thought you loved mysteries."

Then I noticed Thalia's dress on my towel. "Oh wow, you must be wondering whose this is. It's my sister's. She's in the water with a...friend. Hopefully they don't bother us."
Christy smiled instead of answering and pulled off her beach dress.
Whoa. She had an awesome body. I allowed myself to stare a little.. Hopefully she would see.

"Who's the chick?" James asked as we approached. I shrugged in reply before I halted, narrowing my eyes once the little butterfly took her dress off. I was about to go close Alec's mouth in case a fly flew in or something.
Again, I noted how different we were. Where I was all curves and bumps she was thin and angular, muscular. She had that 'cute' vibe around her. Had his taste changed that much or was he simply playing with me back then?
Face it, Thalia, you have no chance. He's over you.
"Hey, guys." I said loudly when we finally got to them, throwing myself almost on Alec. "Move it, bro, leave some space for the rest of us, will you?"

"It's okay, Alec, I have an extra if you need." Christy was already digging through her bag. God, normally I'd like generous girls, but really? Christy handed the towel over to Thalia and settled back to hide her face behind her Sprite. I turned towards her, halfway turning away from Thalia. "Tell me Christy.. What sports do you do?"
"Oh.. I like gymnastics."
"You're a cheerleader?"
"Not yet." She gifted me with a real look to the eyes. "I'm concentrating in my running, I'm not sure If they'd take me in on the squad. It takes a lot of.. Yelling."

"And you look it," I said as kindly as I could, shooting daggers at my step sister. "Thalia is just on her period today. Julian here, won't be left short today though, don't you worry about that."
There was an uncomfortable silence, as Christy didn't answer. "I should go," she said, in her small voice that I wasn't sure was endearing or annoying. She stood up, her towel messily piled in her arms.
I scrambled up with her. "Wait, no, don't go Christy!" I turned on Thalia. "Apologize."

James behind me stood up, shifting glances between the three if us trying to decipher whatever was going on between Alec and me. The silence stretched on for a few moments before he muttered, 'Name's James, ombré.'
Bilingual, I thought, pondering on whether he knew more synonyms for bastard than I did, currently the one word that befitted Alec. 'But of course, how could I forget? Wasn't worth it in the end, was it, Alec?'

Christy was beginning to move away. I gave up on Thalia and grabbed her hand. "Wait, Christy, please. Just a second."
"I should go." She looked on the verge of tears. "I'm obviously in the middle of something and.." She trailed off, no excuse coming to her mind.
"Look," I said, turned my back to the other two and lowering my voice. "I like you. I'd like to see you again before I go home. What about dinner tonight?"
"I don't know.."
I intertwined my fingers in hers and lifted them to my lips. I brushed my lips off her knuckles. "Please?"
There it was again, the faint blush high on her cheekbones. "....Okay."
I took my phone out and handed it to her. "Give me your number. I'll text you the details this afternoon."
A silly smile was playing on her lips as she tapped in her digits. "There." She took a step back. "I'll see you tonight, then."
I grinned at her. "Tonight." I watched her head off, giving a cute little wave as she did so, unwilling to turn back to Thalia and her idiot.

There was something in the way he looked into my eyes that made me realise two things; I would end up hurting James. And two, he would not be my only victim. And this is all because of you, Evans.
I leaned in to kiss his cheek lightly, sparing but a backward glance towards Alec to make sure he'd see it before I smiled broadly, 'My place, tonight. What do you think?'
As if he would even think of refusing.

It was 8:30, and dinner was nearly ready. I had prepared one of the only dishes I knew -spaghetti- and splurged on a nice bottle of wine. I planned to take her out for ice cream later. It would be nice. Pleasant. Christy would be cute and cuddly, and say all the right things and look the right way. It was just.. I felt for her what I should probably feel for my step sister. But lately that's how I felt about all girls who weren't Thalia. I just had to man up and get over it. And why not with Cristy?

At around eight, I started getting ready. Something simple seemed the best option, an electric blue flowy dress, the edges of which brushed my thighs. Sleeves that fell to my arms, past my shoulders, leaving patches of tanned skin to show. But my favourite touch was the perfume; I'd play a little game with Alec's mind. I listened carefully for his steps descending downstairs, then tiptoed into his room where I snatched his cologne, breezy and cool, not before I sprayed his entire bedroom with my own perfume. Even if he did bring her in there, he'd only be able to think about me. I lightly spread some cologne on the back of my neck and ears, then set the bottle down. One last touch, wrapping the shirt he had laid out to wear on his bed in a cloud of flowery perfume.
Not long after, the bell rang. Not knowing which of our dates it was, I walked eagerly, almost hopping in anticipation and opened the door wide. Then stepped aside with a slight tilt of the head, then a hesitant-looking grin, as a very sharp-dressed and handsome James entered. In his hands, roses. Oh no, they're red too.
'Beautiful flowers, for a beautiful flower,' he said as he handed me the bouquet, fragrant and overused, like his words. What was next? Did it hurt when I fell from heaven? In any case, I acted surprised and pleased, edging towards him to give him a light kiss in the cheek before I took him from the hand, leading him to the kitchen, 'I'm so glad you made it,' I said, 'another afternoon with my brother would seem like a nightmare.'

"You're not serious." I said, voice flat. "Get out. Christy will be here shortly and we were planning to enjoy the night." I can't do that if you're here with that damned perfume.
The bell rang. "That's her. Get lost."

I realized Alec was still looking at me expectantly and I turned around with an innocent look. 'But, brother, you did suggest a double date, did you not? And in any case, I would love to see what that minor did to bewitch you- usually you prefer feistier, though your taste has suffered direly as of late, it's true.' I flashed him a venomous smile before I walked over to the stove, looking over what he had been cooking.
'Ah, Italian, my favourite. You're just the best!' I strode over to him and kissed him lightly on the cheek, lingering long enough for him to smell the scent of his own perfume before I ruffled his hair in a gesture of peaceful truce. I turned to James. 'Now, you, sir, are in for a treat. I have my own surprise, and trust me, however impressive Alec's culinary skills are, mine surpass them- though that is no surprise.'

"Hey!" I smiled, as I took off the stupid apron I had on to protect my shirt. "How are you?"
"I'm good. The front door was open." She said, apologetically, as if she did something wrong. She took in Thalia and James, her eyes widening slightly. "Oh. Hi Thalia." Her eyes met mine. In them questions burned.
"Thalia is gate crashing." I said with a grimace. Cristy smiled nervously at my step sister before setting her bag down and coming to my side. "I'm sure it'll be fun. Let me help." She took the wooden spoon from my hand. "Oh. You have a bit of.." She rubbed a thumb across my cheek. She showed it to me. It was red, like Thalia's lips.
"My sister kissed my cheek as a sign of a truce." I sighed. "I'm still not sharing the food with her." I turned off the heat under the sauce. "There, done. Sit yourself down, and allow me to serve you."
"There's enough food for us all." She murmured, ignoring me.
"But not enough wine. There's a great restaurant down the street. They'll be fine there."

I averted my eyes and turned my gaze towards the blondie. Her sight almost made my stomach churn. It was as if he had chosen on purpose the exact type of girls I hated. 'You look pretty, Christy. Doll-like, almost. Are you familiar with Barbies? You share an uncanny resemblance.'
James had simply elected to sip water from his tall glass next to me, squeezing my hand gingerly.
