Itโ€™s been over two centuries since magic was wiped away from Somnus, the world of dreams. The death of Yggdrasil was followed shortly by the disappearance of the Seven Great Mana Spirits. Beneath the earth where Yggdrasil once stood, the ground was rent apart, releasing a dark miasma that tainted all that it touched. It spread like wildfire. The earth, the air, the water, and all forms of life caught within were defiled and warped. Along with the miasma came the Obscuri. Creatures of vile origins, who seek nothing but ruin and destruction and, despite the disappearance of mana, are able to use a different, tainted form of magic. The beings of Somnus, with no magic of their own, were vastly overpowered.

Somnia, the Goddess of Somnus, weakened severely by the death of Yggrasil, poured the last of her power into raising a barrier that stopped the spread of the corruption, before entering into a deep slumber. The barrier contained the miasma, as well as trapping in the worst of the Obscuri. However, this was not without losses. The Kingdom of Ellaria, home of the Jumi, was nearly entirely destroyed, the miasma having swallowed half of the kingdom before the barrier was cast.

Furthermore, Despite the barrier, the less powerful Obscuri are still able to break through the barrier and wreak havoc. This was how the remainder of the Jumi Kingdom was destroyed. With each obscuri that passes through the border, the barrier weakens, allowing more powerful obscuri to pass through. The barrier will not last forever.

But there is hope. Prophecy states that the Champions of Somnia will find the lifeseed, as well as the Seven Great Mana Spirits, in order to restore Yggdrasil and awaken the goddess Somnia, who will give them the ability to ultimately banish the Obscuri from Somnus.

Spoiler: show
Note: So if you were born early enough to notice, this game takes some inspiration from the Playstation game "Legend of Mana" . I would like to note that while some things remain the same, such as the idea of the mana tree burning down and magic nearly disappearing from the world, and the names of the elemental spirits. Much of the story has been changed to create an entirely different RP. Therefore, those who are unfamiliar with the game are not missing much, as important information will be explained here, in the ooc, or in-game. As you may have figured, this is in no way what-so-ever canon.

MAP OF SOMNUS: I do not have enough posts to post links, and the map is to big to fit in the page with an image tag, so I'll post the raw link here - http://imgur.com/DD4YzDS

[center][NOTES]

Magic and Abilities System

Magic in the world of Somnus is entirely dependent on the existence of mana.
Mana is created by the Yggdrasil, and flows through the aether in the same way that pollen floats from trees through the wind. Natural occurrences happen through mana. The trees use mana to make air, the sun rises and sets thanks to the existences of mana. The ebb and flow of the ocean is all controlled by mana. After the destruction of Yggdrasil, the world was left with just enough mana to continue existing without falling apart entirely. However it was not enough to allow the use of magic by the people of Somnus.(Magic)

Aether is the medium on which mana, and aura exist. It is often referred to as the will of the universe. When a person uses magic, they are forcing their will upon the aether in order to manipulate the flow of mana in ways that can manifest themselves in spectacular ways. The stronger a person's will, the bigger and stronger their abilities are.

Aside from magic, there is another set of powerful skills known simply as "abilities". Both work in similar, yet distinct fashions. Where magic works by imposing your will on the aether to manipulate an outside force (mana), Abilities work by imposing your will on the aether to manipulate an inside force, known as Aura. Aura is a manifestation of the soul of every living thing. If it were visible, it would look like a flame. The stronger the person's will is, the brighter, larger, and more intense the flame. With training, one can learn to manipulate their aura with the aether as well. Just as one can fan flames to make them grow stronger, one can use the aether to fan the flame of their aura, in order to perform superhuman actions. Examples of these would be increasing your strength, or allowing yourself to perform feats such as walking on water, jumping incredible heights, performing normally impossible weapon techniques, extending the range of blows and strikes, augmenting the power of ranged weapons, etc.

Races

Somnus is a world of dreams. All characters from all dreams of every creature in every world come to live here. Therefore the selection of races in Somnus is extremely varied. As GM, I will give you nearly complete freedom of character creation. I may ask you to change certain things about your character (For example, Obscuri and Faerie are unplayable races) But you can essentially create whatever you want, as long as you do not create an unstoppable powerhouse with all the powers of every anime or comic book character that has ever existed. Character appearance can be totally unique, have four arms, have a bug head on a minotaur body, have fun with this. Or simply be a traditional fantasy race. The choice is yours and you will not be penalized for your choices. (Though, for personal preference. Please avoid weeaboo or cliche darkness is cool tropes. Neko Vampire Ninja, no. However a [Original name for a anthropomorphic cat race with vampiric tendencies trained in an art similar to ninjutsu] is totally fine.

Below I have provided a few examples of playable races, however your choices are in no way limited to this.

Humans: Humans. I'm fairly certain you know what this looks like.

Faerie: The only race still able to fully utilize mana. Unplayable race. Can turn invisible to the eyes of those they do not want seeing them. Despite their ability to use mana after the death of Yggdrasil, they chose to seclude themselves deep in their forest, rather than provide aid to the outside world.

Merfolk: Aquatic creatures, notable characteristics are their gills, the location of which varies, normally on the neck, or cheeks. They have webbed feet and hands and blue skin.

Stonefolk: Large sturdy humanoids. They are very strong and resistant to damage. Not too smart however. They are capable of manipulating a special kind of stone known as soul stones, which they carve out in ways that best suit their individual tastes and styles. Their skin is grey as stone, and their hair only grows in shades of grey. They do not float well in water.

Avian: Bird humanoids. Their faces are mostly humanoid except for the fact that they are normally framed by small, downy feathers. They do not grow hair, instead, they grow longer, thicker feathers. They have feathers growing from their forearms that allow them to glide, as well as sharp, talon like feet and hands.

Kraal: Reptilian humanoids. various shapes and sizes, non-draconic.

Jumi: Nearly extinct. They are indistinguishable from humans aside from the fist sized crystal exposed on the center of their chests. This crystal serves as their hearts, and they cannot die unless this crystal is removed or destroyed. Despite the lack of mana, they are able to perform magic related to the properties of their crystal. The Jumi were nearly entirely wiped out two hundred years ago by the arrival of the miasma. After that, which magic and magical materials becoming so scarce, they were hunted down by particularly greedy spell casters, as the Jumi heart crystals were particularly valuable as ingredients for magical items. Hence they are very scarce and distrustful by nature.

Beastfolk: Species of anthropomorphic animal species all species fit under beast folk, even if they call themselves by another name (Example- Kraal, Avian).

[Gameplay]

Gameplay will be largely story based, Either I or my friend who helped me create the story will gm the storyline, describing scenes, playing npc, and driving the story forward. It will be a give and take dynamic. The story will react to your characters actions as much as your characters will revolve around the events of the story. Combat and certain luck-based events will be decided by dice roll. By joining, you are agreeing that you understand the terms and will not explode on the gm should your character fail an action or something of the like.

In the event of an unexcused absence of over a week the gm will bunny your character (Control it's actions) after three absences your character will be removed from the storyline in the most appropriate way.

Toggle Rules

Aside from the site rules, please adhere to the following conditions or expectations of this roleplay.

This roleplay is [Literate]. Posts will be written in 3rd person past tense prose.
Meaning no text speech, *action markers* or similar roleplay devices.

Post frequency, at least once a week. If you cannot adhere to this, I'm sorry but please dont join. Having too many RPs is not an excuse. Don't bite off more than you can chew.

Post length, Appropriate. Once in a while a single paragraph post is understandable, but do not leave everyone else with such a small amount of material to work with that the roleplay slowly degenerates into a one-liner rp.

DO NOT ARGUE with the gm. Or anyone else for that matter. If there is something you do not understand or need explained, pm him. He's nice.

Don't be a dick to others. Pretty simple. The point of the RP is to have fun. So be nice.

FOUR PLAYERS AT A TIME. That is the limit I would like to keep it at. Multiple characters can be made, though I would like to start with just four. Though the RP talks about Prophecy, there are no Four Specific heroes. NPC and PC characters can come and go as needed. Provided you can handle the responsibility.
