Three thousand miles; An ocean away from home. The sun peaks through the cracks of the airplane windows.
"Five hour difference huh..." Elaine softly whispered to herself while she slowly slid the airplane window open. The rays of light from the sun rushed into the once dark room. The light graced her face and pierced her hazel eyes causing her to squint in order for her eyes to adjust. A whole new city she was about to embark into. Knowing barely anyone and anything about the city, let alone the country itself; it was all exciting and frightening at the same time. She felt like a child experiencing something so new. How silly of her to feel this way when she's a fully grown woman, but she can't help it. Nothing about this feels comfortable or familiar, but she owed it to herself to begin new again. She wanted to make a name for herself and prove that she's worth everything she's worked so hard for.

Image

The city view from her window, with a dense covering of morning fog, is something she could get used to. The pace of life for Elaine has sped up; as if someone pressed the fast-forward button on their TV remote. Back in London, during her job, she was able to enjoy her mornings with a cup of tea or coffee and a small breakfast, but now everything she takes has to be to-go or she will never reach her destination on time.

In the short period of time she's been in New York, Elaine is not a fan of driving and the same can be said about taking a taxi. For her first pay check, she decided to purchase a bike with a small basket on it. Although getting to places isn't really convenient with a bike, at least the market and shops are short enough of a distance that a bike becomes very handy. As for errands, Elaine tries to take her bike rather than paying for a cab and waiting in the New York traffic.

The piano riff rings as her phone vibrates in sync. I should really change the ringtone of my phone, she thought to herself while she smiled at the silliness of it. Peaking over at the side table of her desk, the Caller ID says its a phone call from Isabelle Croft. She hastily picked up her phone and answer,

"Hello?"

"Good Morning, Elaine. This is Isabelle's assistant, Sarah, reminding you of tonight's event. They had changed the venue to the Cipriani 42nd street. Joe will come pick you up from your apartment at seven o'clock." Sarah spoke with a high-toned, bubbly voice and hung up the phone before Elaine could even respond. With the dial tone beeping, Elaine hung up and placed her phone down on her side table facing down.

She got up from her bed and began to re-fluff the pillows and fix the covers. Afterwards, she popped into the shower before her work starts.

Vincent's arm drunkenly reached out to hit the snooze on his alarm clock sitting on the nightstand. Hitting the wrong button, it began blaring more loudly, angering the hungover man. He moved to cover the pillow over his ears but the ringing was still making his head throb. Giving up, he cursed and ripped the plug out of the wall, instantly silencing the small machine.

He looked up, but the light blaring from the open windows made him groan and he shielded his sensitive eyes. It took Vince a minute to remember what had happened the night before.

He had gotten in a fight with his father because he had missed a business meeting earlier that day. His father always managed to make him angry and their fights often ended with Vince finding comfort in a bottle of whiskey. He stood and stumbled his way to the bathroom, avoiding the broken shards of glass on the floor. His hand turned the knob to the sink and he splashed water on his face to wake himself up. Leaning over the sink, he took several deep breaths, the water on his face dripping onto the black marble counter. Ever so slowly, he tilted his head up and stared at his reflection in the mirror.

Dead eyes stared back at him, causing him to quickly look away and head towards his swanky kitchen. He grabbed his phone off of the island and turned it on. He had 12 messages, all of them were from his fiancΓ©e Giana. He sighed and put his phone on speaker as the messages played. "Turn your damn phone on." Vince rolled his eyes at that as the machine went on to the second message. He opened the fridge and grabbed a bottle of water.

By the 11th message, Vince had already drank the bottle and was now eating a breakfast burrito. Giana's messages were all basically the same, her yelling at him for leaving his phone off. He never did have a great relationship with his fiancΓ©e. They didn't live together and had no real feelings for each other. Vincent had only proposed to get his father off of his back about finding a wife and he knew that Giana only accepted because of his money and the fat diamond ring he gave her. Some people might see it as sad, but they both got what they wanted while still having that sense of freedom.

The last message finally played, "Don't forget that you have to come to the fashion show I'm modeling for tonight. Make sure to wear something nice too because you're my fiancΓ©e and if you look bad, I look bad. And before you call me to whine about coming, you don't have to stay for the whole thing, you just have to make an appearance and then you can leave. I don't care if you call me back, just come to the show tonight. You better be there Vincent, I mean it."

He turned his phone off as soon as the message ended. He hated going to Giana's dumb events, but he knew he'd hear shit from her if he didn't go. Vince left the kitchen and went to get ready for the day.

The rain hasn't stopped since this morning. Something about it felt calming and comfortable. It reminded her similarly of the weather back in England. Although she keeps denying it, Elaine felt horrible home sick. The fashion event is just a few hours away. There isn't much she can do when the weather is sopping wet outside. Making her way to the coffee table, she opened up her personal laptop. The black skin contrasted with the bright screen, Elaine winced her eyes from the brightness. She then opened up her playlist and pressed play. The volume was loud enough that she could hear, but quiet enough to not disturb any neighbors around. With the event closing in, and Joe buzzing at her door soon, Elaine stepped into the bathroom to take a hot shower.

A white, fuzzy bathrobe was slipped onto her olive skin. Droplets of water slid down her slim legs and onto the white shaggy bathroom carpet. She grabbed a white towel to dry her drenched hair. Shuffling at the scalp and gently squeezing the ends to prevent any more to drip. Elaine stepped forward, closer to the large mirror . A mirror that almost entirely covered her bathroom wall. Her reflection look familiar, but felt like a stranger staring back at her. She smiled and drew a small smiley face on the fogged corner of the glass.
Stepping out of the bathroom and making her way into the kitchen, she opened the cabinet to grab a cup and fetched from water from the fridge. She drank the cold glass of water and looked at the time. 5:30pm... She placed her cup down onto the granite counter top and headed to her bedroom.

Her dress was laid on top of her bed. A black gown with blue patterns lined with gold. The material was from London and she had sketched the design some time ago. Elaine grabbed a pair of black strapped heels to complement her dress.

After an hour of getting ready, Elaine sat on her vanity chair and slipped into her shoes. Securing the straps around her ankles, she stood up and straightening out her dress. Stepping forward into the mirror, she did some final touch up with her hair and make-up and she was ready to go.
Her phone rang and buzzed on her night stand, she walked over to face it up and sees that Joe is ringing her up. She swiped the green phone icon on her phone and placed the phone on her ear.

"Good Evening Joe. Are you outside already?" Elaine asked with a calm tone.

"Good Evening Miss Porter. Your ride is awaiting outside your apartment. I'll wait for you by the door with an umbrella. Ready whenever you are." Joe spoke with a husky, low voice and a thick New York accent.

"I'll be right downstairs. Thanks Joe." she pressed the red button to hang up the call and popped her phone into her gold sequence clutch along with the keys to her apartment. Lastly she grabbed the invitation she received in the mail and made her way downstairs.
Opening the door, there was Joe, standing outside with a big black umbrella. He gave her a grin and walked towards Elaine. Joe was a much older man, deep blue eyes and a sturdy build. His hair was...lacking, but he makes up for it with a mustache. He wore a black suit with a black tie, nothing fancy, but decent for a driver.
Elaine stepped down the stairs, Joe reached over and opened the door for her. He waited till she was settled inside and closed the door shut; he also put away the umbrella and got into the driver seat.

The rain has finally stopped, but gray heavy clouds still covered the sky. Elaine got out of the car and make her way inside the Cipriani. Entering, the room was filled with unfamiliar faces. Scanning around, Elaine caught the eye of Isabelle. With a big smile and open arms, Isabelle made her way to Elaine.

"Darling! Elaine, my dear! You've made it!"she approached Elaine and went in for a hug and a cheek-to-cheek kiss.
"I hope the car ride was comfortable. Come along, you MUST meet everyone," Isabelle spoke with a very excited tone. She placed her hand behind Elaine and guided her around the Cipriani Hall greeting various people along the way.
Elaine smiled and grinned her way through everyone. Although she felt overwhelmed, she didn't allow this feeling to express on her face. Her hazel eyes grazed over the whole room as she took a breath in through her nose and out through her lips.

"Can I offer you a drink?" a deep voice spoke to her from behind. Turning around, she met the blue eyes of a fairly tall, slender man.
"Steven Clarke," he introduced himself and took her hand with a soft kiss. Elaine felt flattered and charmed.
"Elaine Porter." A smile escaped Elaine's thin, red colored lips.
"A drink sounds amazing." The two of them walked over to the bar. Elaine ordered classic martini and Steven got an Old Fashion neat. The two of them chattered up for a bit, blending into the noise of the room.

ImageBy the time 6 o'clock had rolled around, Vincent was mostly ready to make his appearance for the fashion show. He was fully dressed in a black suit and tie, with polished shoes and his expensive silver watch to bring the look together. He enjoyed the luxuries that money gave him and loved to buy expensive clothing.

Earlier that day, his maid had cleaned up the glass from the broken whiskey bottle and straightened his room out. Vince had showered and gotten his exercises in as well, so he had mostly overcome his hangover. His headache had even disappeared. Before he headed out, Vincent made sure to put a spray of his cologne on. It smelled like the ocean, but with a hint of dark rum. With that, and a quick glance in the mirror to make sure everything was in place, he walked out of his three story penthouse and hopped in his car.

He knew that cars weren't really popular in New York City, but he loved old cars and his 1969 corvette stingray convertible was his pride and joy. The only bad part about having it was that traffic was terrible and Vince wasn't exactly the most patient person in the world. He managed though.

It didn't dawn on him that he should have brought an umbrella because of all the rain. It was still pouring down and had been since this morning. However, as soon as he thought about bringing an umbrella, the rain began to slow down until it stopped completely. The timing was perfect as he had just arrived at the fashion show. Giving the keys to the valet, he sent Giana a text letting her know he was here.

Walking in, the loud chatter instantly filled his ears from all the people scattered around. He stood near the door for a moment, looking for his fiancΓ©e.

Giana found him first though and came up to him. "About time you showed up," she spat. "make sure that you make your rounds and talk to a few people to at least pretend like your interested."

"Will do, master." he said sarcastically.

Giana glared at him. "Behave Vincent. I have to go see my friends, but make sure you meet up with me before you leave." She strutted away from him, swinging her hips as she did so.

Ignoring Giana's dramatic behavior, he walked toward the bar, hoping that alcohol would keep him from getting bored. He sat down on a barstool and ordered a shot of Vodka. When the bartender handed Vincent the shot glass, he quickly downed it. Waiting for a refill, he turned his head to scan the crowd. Models mostly, but no one Vince was interested in talking to. At least, until his eyes landed on the brown haired beauty standing near the opposite end of the bar. Vince paused on her, letting his eyes follow every curve and bend of her body. Damn, he thought. That girl is fine.

Vince knew that Giana would kill him if he flirted with a girl while she was in the same room, they had a policy when it came to cheating on each other, but Vince had to talk to this woman. Leaving his Vodka behind, he slowly moved closer to the mystery girl. As he neared her, he noticed she was talking to some guy, probably one of the many models in the joint. That didn't concern him though, he could easily get her to ditch him. Remaining confident, he continued on. When he was only a few feet away from her, she turned, and he could finally see her entire face.

It was a face he knew well, one that he hadn't seen in 11 years.

Vincent froze in his spot, not able to comprehend what his eyes were seeing. There, only mere feet from him stood Elaine Porter, his childhood sweetheart, the only person he had ever truly loved.

Thankfully, she hadn't seen him and he was able to retreat back to his place at the bar. He drank the Vodka and signaled for another one. Meanwhile, his mind was in a frenzy. What were the odds that he would see her again after all these years, and in New York none the less.

He peeked another glance at her, thinking he made a mistake.

No, it was her. It was most definitely her. She looked older and more mature, but Vince couldn't mistake that face. He cursed to himself, and his hands covered his face in frustration.

Vince followed her every movement after that. Wherever she went, he was always there, lurking in the shadows much like a stalker would. It was almost creepy, but he couldn't help it. He couldn't get his mind off of her and at the same time, he didn't know how to confront her.

ImageThough the room is filled with distant chatters and inaudible noises, the sound of the piano could still be heard from every part of the room. Elaine took a small sip of her martini as she glanced up at Steven. She couldn't help but think of how kind and sweet he's being to her. He's kept her company in a room full of strangers even though they're not strangers to him. Steven had finished his drink and asked the bartender for another one, but her on the other hand wasn't really planning on drinking much. She merely got a drink in order to fit into the socializing crowd; not to get drunk.
Elaine took notice of a man by the bar downing some shots. He looked over at her and it caught her attention, but she shrugged it off and continued her talks with Steven.

After half an hour has passed by, Isabelle found Elaine again and excused her from Steven. Steven sort of just half-heartedly smiled and nodded at Isabelle while raising his glass a bit. Elaine looked at Steven with a faint smile as she was dragged away from the bar counter and into the crowd; the ocean of people closed in and she could no longer see Steven.

Isabelle began to introduce Elaine to every body. Her mind could only gather so many faces and names in one night. She politely smiled and shook their hands throughout each introduction. With the room being so full of people, it was difficult to hear at times and they often had to raise their voices just to be heard.

After several introductions, Isabelle brought her to a blue eyed, dark skin, blonde model. Elaine couldn't help but stare at how beautiful and perfect she looked.

"This is Giana Purcell, one of the best model." Isabelle spoke with such pride yet aloofness. Something in her tone told Elaine that she wasn't as pretty as she looked, but her judgement doesn't come from others'. With a sweet smile she spoke,

"Elaine Porter from England." an introduction managed to slip out her lips. Her British accent was prominent in a room full of Americans. She raised her right hand towards Giana in hopes for a hand shake.

When the model showed the ring on her finger, the diamond was gorgeous. A short feeling of envy took over her, but what girl wouldn't feel that way. Giana looks like the type of girl who knows what she wants and gets what she wants, so there was no doubt that a guy wouldn't fulfill those wishes for her. She can't really tell if Giana is the lucky one or the fiance, but either way, they both seem happy enough to get engaged.

Giana waved over for her fiance in the near distant. A tall and handsome man approached the three of them. Giana looked very giddy and excited to show off such a fine man. Any girl would feel the same way towards their fiance, especially someone so breath taking.

Elaine took a pause, almost staring at the man as he introduced himself. She quickly broke her daze when their eyes met and smiled at him and reached for his hand,
"Elaine, Elaine Porter." she said in a formal tone. His hand was firm and rough; in a manly, complementary sense. His presence felt familiar, but Elaine was too overwhelmed with everything around her to really take much notice of anything.

"Elaine will be one of designers for the Fall line this year, you'll be wearing at least one of hers." Isabelle interrupted in the middle of their handshake.
"Yes, it will quite a pleasure to dress someone, strikingly beautiful such as yourself, Giana." her eyes shifted towards Giana. The two of them looked so perfect for each other. A dapper, handsome man and a beautiful, chic woman. No wonder the two of them are a couple.

Moments later, the pianist began to play a slow, song. Steven came from behind her and asked,
[color=#0040BF]"Can I have this dance?"
Elaine looked up at his blue eyes,

"Of course." she smiled and took his hand,
"If you could excused me," facing towards Giana, feeling sorry for having their conversation interrupted.

Steven swept her over to the dance floor, holding her hand on his while he placed the other on her lower back. She then placed her other hand atop of his broad shoulders and they slowly began to sway to the sound of the piano.
He leaned into her ear,
"You are the most beautiful woman in this room," he spoke to her softly, almost like a whisper.
Her face flushed red, his voice and lips so close to her ear made her heart skip a beat. Her ear felt hot from just those few words. A childish giddy was kicking at her core, but she kept her composure; smiled and chuckled softly at him. They continued their dancing.

Image Vincent kept knocking back vodka shots every now and then out of nervousness. He wasn't drunk yet, but he was feeling lightly buzzed. His eyes which had been following Elaine, drifted towards the bar for a brief second and when he turned back, he had lost her.

In a panic he fought his way through the crowd, searching with no luck. Where did she go?

ImageAfter a short while, Isabelle, a famous fashion designer that Giana knew well, came over, bringing a woman that she had never seem before. Isabelle introduced the woman to Giana.

Then the woman introduced herself as Elaine Porter from England.

Giana, happy to have something to talk about said, "Your from England? What a coincidence, so is my fiancΓ©." At the word fiancΓ©, she put her left hand in full view of the two women to show off her gorgeous diamond ring. It was then that model caught Vincent's eye and motioned for him to come over.

"Speaking of my fiancΓ©, there he is." She pointed at him as he slowly walked over. Giana loved to show off her rich and handsome fiancΓ©, he typically made people jealous.

Image

Just when Vincent had finally spotted Elaine, he saw her talking to Giana and before he could sneak away, his fiancΓ©e waved him over. Hesitantly, he made his way over to the three women. Giana pulled him to her, hanging onto his arm and smiling charmingly at him.

"This is him, my beloved fiancΓ©." she said sweetly.

Vince nervously looked toward Elaine, his eyes meeting hers. He reached out a hand. "The name's Vincent."

She grabbed his hand, hers much smaller and daintier than his own. She ruined the moment when she introduced herself as if she had never met him before. He gave her a confused look right as the designer interrupted their handshake.

Elaine went on talking like nothing had happened. She really didn't remember him.

Giana thanked Elaine for the compliment and then the conversation was over.

Vincent was in disbelief at their encounter. After all they had been through together, he would have liked to think that she wouldn't forget him. Apparently, the years they spent together meant nothing to her, at least that was how Vince felt in his current state of distress.

From afar, Vincent angrily watched Elaine dance with the male model from earlier. The man was too close to her, he even had his hand on her lower back. When Elaine laughed at something the model said, Vince growled lightly under his breath.

That was it, he had to put a stop to this. Encouraged by his jealousy and the large amount of alcohol he had consumed that night he made his way onto the dance floor, heading straight for the dancing couple. Vincent rudely pushed the two away from each other, stepping between them.

Ignoring the angry model, he turned towards Elaine. "Do you really not remember me?" he blurted, searching her eyes intently for any sign of recognition.

Just when the night was going smoothly, the man from before comes across the room pushed Elaine and Steven apart. The man stood tall in front of Elaine and she could sense the frustration Vincent was feeling towards her.
His question rang in her ears. "Do you really not remember me?" His question sent chills all over her body, a calling she thought she would never have to confront.

Steven angrily grabbed Vincent's shoulder; ready to start a fight for being rude. But Elaine interrupted him,

"If you could excuse us for just one moment.."she spoke in such a calm, kind tone that Steven couldn't help but comply with.

Luckily, the room was filled with buzzed and drunk people that the commotion wasn't really noticed. Elaine took Vincent's hand and guided him out of the hall and into the empty hallway. Only one janitor and a few service employees could be seen roaming around the halls, but it was practically empty. The well-lit hallway didn't seem like the perfect place to speak to Vincent. Elaine quickly scanned the room and saw a small corner that was dimly lit. She continued to guide Vincent there and placed him in front of her.

With kind, almost teary eyes, Elaine looked at his beautiful olive eyes. She gently smiled at him. On her tip toes, she leaned forward and wrapped her arms around his head; one arm hung over his shoulders while her hand held the back of his neck and her chin rested on his other shoulder. Her heart was pounding so loud, it was almost deafening. An array of emotions swept over her and she didn't know where to begin. His body felt warm and comforting, yet strange and cold all at the same time.

Releasing her hold, she took one step back from him. With a soft voice, she looked down at the ground and spoke,
Image
"Who do you think you are?" her voice was breaking and a tone that was almost angry yet afraid. A tear escapes her eyes as she blinked.
"Just as my life begins to fall into its place, you show up...." Her eyes traveled from his shoes up to his olive eyes and said,
"You are not allowed to be angry at me for not recognizing you." her tone was stern, but soft and kind. She gently placed one hand on his cheek and rubbed it gently with her thumb. Her hazel eyes were locked onto his, shifting back and from, left and right. She slowly slipped her hand down from his cheek and awaited for his response.

ImageThe glimmer in Elaine's eyes and change of her expression told Vincent all he needed to know.

Behind him, the model grabbed at his shoulder most likely to punch him, but Elaine stopped him. The guy backed off and Elaine grabbed Vincent's hand, leading him towards an empty hallway and then further down to a corner that was dimly lit.

She glanced up at him her enchanting hazel eyes, and in that instant, Vince was a teenager again. She smiled gently at him and then, rising on her tiptoes, wrapped her arms around his head. His hands automatically went around her waist, pulling her more tightly against him. For the first time in 11 years, he could finally breath. He had gotten so caught up in his privileged life that he had forgotten what he was missing.

Or rather, who he was missing.

Despite their many years of separation, he still had that same high feeling he always used to get when he was near Elaine. She clouded his senses and made him lose all rational thought. Vincent had been drinking all night and now, he was drunk on her.

When Elaine pulled away from him, he felt empty again. That drowning loneliness he could never seem to get rid of, quickly rushing back. She stepped back from him as if she had to distance herself. When she spoke, he could hear her voice crack as if she was crying. The sound broke his heart.

Vince watched as she slowly looked up at him with tears in her eyes. His expression matched hers in its sadness as she spoke. When she was done, she reached up to gently rub her thumb on his cheek. She searched his eyes as he had done to her earlier and put her arm back down by her side.

He knew she was waiting for him to speak, but he was having a hard time figuring out what to say. He rubbed the back of his neck, looking at her nervously.

"I'm not mad at you anymore, I never really was in the first place." he stammered. "Besides, don't you think that this," he gestured at the space between him and her. "Us being brought together in an unlikely place after all these years, is the work of fate?"

Vincent closed the space between them, placing his hands on either side of her head and bending down to lean his forehead against hers. His eyes drifted shut as he got lost in the moment. Being able to touch her again, was like a dream.

Opening his eyes again, he looked at her through his heavy lidded gaze. "I've missed you Elaine." he whispered with desperation in his voice. His nose moved to touch hers lightly as his lips inched closer to hers. They were so close now, that they were sharing the same breaths. In one swift move, Vincent went to touch his lips to hers.

Everything was happening all too suddenly. It felt surreal and Elaine is taken aback by all of it. Her hazel eyes followed down to his hands as he gestured between the two of them.
"Fate? I feel rather cheated...." her voice quieted, almost whispering. She could smell the alcohol in his breath and she knew then that he was intoxicated. For so many years, she waited for this very moment. So much of her time was wasted hoping and dreaming that he would come sweep her off her feet. But that moment has passed. That Elaine was buried and left back in London.

The spark she once felt and all the love she had for him was replaced with an empty void inside her. Being the kind person that she is, she cared very much for him and love him, but not the same way she used to. Back then she would've given an arm and a leg just to be right in this moment, but now, it feels too late. His words about fate doesn't faze her. Fate never gave her the chance she wanted; she was forced to work hard for it all her life. Probably something he could never understand. He looks like he's well off now; getting anything and everything he wanted. Drowning himself with the luxury that she could only dream of.

His words felt sincere and meaningful, but how could she believe them? "I've missed you Elaine" The desperation in his tone was obvious, but it felt like a lost man crying for help. It didn't feel like the teenage Vincent that would've given up the world for her. With his forehead touching hers, she closed her eyes. She was torn; her childhood felt complete again, but her present self felt empty for him.
He was the very reason Elaine left England; to escape the empty promise he left her with. This whole situation felt like a joke. Like life wanted to continue toying with her emotions.

As her eyes opened, she felt his nose touch hers and in an instant she felt his warm lips pressed tightly against hers. Elaine's hazel eyes widened and froze. She fell into a daze as she felt her heart melt with his gesture. Every part of her wanted to submit to his kiss, but she knew it was wrong. A million thoughts raced into her mind; He has a fiance! In that instant, she pushed herself off of him and placed a hand over her lips.
"Y-you have a fiance, Vincent." she stammered to say those words, but that was the reality of it.
"This isn't a game; I'm not a toy you can play with. I waited....eleven years for you to show up, but not even once did I cross your mind. " Elaine wiped the tear that had fallen down her cheek. She exhaled out as if she had been holding her breath the whole time. She dared not look at Vincent one more time for she knows it would just make it harder to leave.
"You're drunk and I'm going home... "

Wanting to escape the situation, she made her way towards the coat check. She gave the attendee the ticket and he returned her thin, off-white coat. Placing one hand through the sleeve, she swung it around to place the other and fixed it to sit on her petite body. She made her way to the door and the doorman swung it open for her. The rain had continued once again. Joe was probably still inside the hall, but she could not bear another moment in there. Without an umbrella, Elaine began to walk home.

ImageHis lips moved against hers, but Elaine's remained frozen. Vincent tried to coax her into kissing him back, but to no effect. Eventually she pushed him away, placing a hand over her lips.

"Y-you have a fiance, Vincent." she stammered.

Ah, yes. He did. He had completely forgotten about Giana. Granted, he had cheated on her before, but he could see the position that it put Elaine in. Vince tried to explain his relationship with Giana to her, but she had already started talking again.

Game? Toy? Was that how she thought he saw her? The part about her waiting eleven years stung because it was true. Vincent hadn't given her much thought after coming to New York. Did he forget about her, no, but that almost made things worse because if he did remember her, then he should have gone to her. He should have fought for her, but he didn't and he honestly didn't know if he had it in him to fight for her now. His life now was easy and he knew that by pursuing her, life would be much more difficult.

And yet... in this very moment he fought himself to keep the distance between them.

Another tear left her cheek and at this point Vincent was extremely frustrated with himself. He had no clue how to fix this and he couldn't force himself to even try. Instead he let her walk away from him without so much as a word in response to her accusations. That seemed to be the only thing he did nowadays, watch as life passed by him, not making an effort to take part in it.

A few minutes after Elaine walked away, he followed suit. He informed Giana of his departure and took off towards his penthouse.

Vincent paced around his house with his mind in turmoil. He kept thinking over his encounter with Elaine, playing back her words, most of them not so pleasant for him to hear. He was still slightly embarrassed at her calling him drunk. Most people were used to his excessive drinking, but she had never seen that side of him.

Despite their rough reunion, he still felt the need to get into contact with her again, but how? Vincent glanced at his laptop, raising a brow at it. He could google her, maybe that would tell him something.

Vince sat down, typing in her name with fashion designer beside it. He quickly got a hit and found out the name of the company she was working for. Under her name on the business's website, a work number was listed. Jotting it down on a piece of paper, Vince headed to his bed for the night, trying to erase the day for at least a short time.

Her apartment felt like a short walk with her mind so blurry from tonight's event. Shuffling through her purse, with her soaking hands, she pulled out her keys to unlock the door. Swinging it open, she left her wet shoes by the door, hung her coat, and tossed her purse on the chair.

Stumbling around her apartment as she tried to remove her wet clothes, all Elaine could think about was the audacious words Vincent threw at her tonight;it boils her blood. His expectations of her falling all over him felt cliche. Did he expect her to go limp at the sight of him? Or bring butterflies to her stomach when their lips met? It all felt too ridiculous. Elaine only wanted peace and quiet. Just as things were beginning to settle down, an iceberg sinks her ship.

Hoping into the hot shower, Elaine stopped and traced her bottom lip with her fingers. He kissed her. She has never kissed anyone else besides Vincent; it felt....nice. It wasn't easy for her to admit, but her young self was trying to crawl its way to the surface and crave more of him. She shut her hazel eyes, a smile pulled at her lips and a soft chuckle escaped through her teeth. How silly of her to want him now...

After showering, she slipped on her pajamas and grabbed her laptop from the living room and onto her bed. A movie should take her mind off of things and keep her company until she falls asleep. Sleep should help forget the events that took place tonight.

Image

7:00am
Her alarm blared at her like a siren. Her arm reached over the night stand and pushed it off. A soft groan was let out from her as she got up to get ready for work. She fixed her bed, refluffing the pillows and covering it with her comforter. A quick shower, then brushed her teeth. Checking her phone for the weather, it seems that it will be sunny outside today. Last night's happening managed to slip its way into her thoughts. Clouding her mind for a few moments, but she shook it off and exhaled out.

It was just one night. New York is big and filled with people coming and going, the odds of seeing him again should be very little. Except for the fact that his fiance was a model. A sudden, scary thought comes through her mind. What if Giana finds out about their kiss? Elaine's heart began to race, almost beating out of her petite chest.

Glancing over at the clock, she was going to be late for work. The thought of breakfast hadn't crossed her mind while she stormed out of her apartment and made her way to work.

Opening the big glass door, Elaine pressed the elevator button going up. In a few moments, the machine dings and the door slid open. She pressed the 14th floor. Reaching her level, she made her way over to her office.
"Good Morning everyone," she said with a smile on her face as she passed the cubicles outside her office.
Elaine sat on her desk, typed in her computer password and began to fiddle with her designs. Her focus was straight onto the screen as she edits the color, texture, and patterns to her liking.

The phone on her desk began to ring, she pressed the speaker button,
"Elaine Porter speaking,"
"Elaine darling, its Isabelle. I sent you an email regarding the topic with Mrs. Tellez's dress for red carpet. I also wanted to run over some other things with you later before you leave, so please stop by my office. Thanks Elaine." The dial tone followed right after she finished, leaving Elaine no room for a single word. She didn't seem to notice her quick disappearance last night which is a huge relief for Elaine.

Scrolling through her e-mail, below the email regarding Mrs. Tellez's dress, was the circulation about the Fall Fashion Show. Scanning through the lines, it is being held Paris, France. As much as this excited her, a big part of her was worried that Giana would also be attending, considering that she is a model, it wouldn't be much of a surprise if she, too, is invited to such an event. Elaine didn't bother lingering on that thought and proceeded with the request Isabelle wanted her to look over.

Vincent woke up with a startle upon hearing something make a loud crash in his apartment. With caution, he got out of his bed and walked towards the sound. As his living room and kitchen came into view, he saw a shadow of a person, the silhouette told him that it was a woman and when he turned on the light Giana’s face was brought to view.

"What the hell are you doing here, Giana?" he asked. "And how did you get in?"

"I have a spare key, remember?" Giana lifted the a key with a 'duh' expression on her face. "As for why I'm here, I have to stop by sometimes Vince or people will get suspicious. I also thought that we could 'hang out' today." She said the last part with a suggestive tone to her voice.

Raising a brow at her tone he responded with, "I have to work today."

Walking towards him seductively she ran her fingers down his muscular chest, leaning in close to his ear as her hands continued to travel south. "Skip."

Normally he would have already had her clothes off, but for some reason that Vince couldn't pinpoint, he wasn't interested in Giana's offer.

"I can't,"He grabbed her arms and pushed her away from him gently. "I have to attend an important meeting today with these businessmen from Japan." Lie. "I won't even be done until late tonight." Also a lie.

She pouted her lips unhappily at him and sat down on his leather sofa. "You'll have to make it up to me by buying me expensive clothes and jewelry in Paris." she said while she examined her nails.

"Paris?" he questioned.

"Yes, Paris. They're having the Fall Fashion Show there and I received an invite since I am one of the top models in the world." she said arrogantly. "You're coming so you might as well be useful and use some of your money to spoil me."

As much as Vincent disliked fashion shows, he knew there was no point in arguing. Not to mention the fact that Elaine might be there.

"Sure. Whatever you want." He went to his fridge and grabbed a protein shake as he waited to hear the obnoxious squeals of glee that she always made when he used his money on her. However, she stayed silent. Curious he walked back over to the couch.

She was looking at something and when she spoke it was apparent what it was. "What is this?" In her hand was the piece of paper with Elaine's number and name on it.

Before he could answer her, she spoke up again. "Who's Elaine? Wasn't that the name of the fashion designer we met last night?" His expression must have given him away because this time she yelled. "Dammit, Vince! Numbers are not part of our policy. One night stands only, remember?" Giana waved the paper around as she dramatically moved her hands. "And what's worse is that it is in your handwriting so you obviously wanted her number, not the other way around." Finally done with her speech, she pursed her lips as she waited for an answer.

Thinking off the top of his head he said, "I did ask her for her number, but it's her work number, not her personal number." That part was true at least. "My dad's been talking about expanding into the fashion industry and Elaine said that she might be able to help me out in that area, so I got her work number to get ahold of her for business purposes." It was shocking even to himself, how easily he could spout off lies.

The model examined his face, searching for a hint of a lie, but must have found nothing as she went to grab her bag off of the kitchen island. "Go ahead and go to work then, I'll text you later." With that she strode out the door.

As soon as he heard the click of the door shutting, he sighed in relief and ran his hands through his hair. That was close, he thought.

Then he hurriedly rushed to get dressed for work. It was true that he had to work, but there was no meeting and he would probably be done by 5.

After he was ready, he sat down at his couch and picked up the paper with Elaine's work number on it. Vincent stared at it for several minutes before sitting it down and opening up his computer. He was too nervous to call Elaine right now, so he looked up the address of where she works at and decided to send her something.

He ordered a large vase full of flowers, but Vincent made sure that the man sent flowers that weren't overly powerful. Along with the flowers, he sent her a basket of her favorite candies and a cup of hot tea. Clipped onto the flowers would be a note that read, 'Dinner?'. His phone number would be written underneath the message as well, but he didn't have the man put his name on the card.

Satisfied with himself Vincent headed off to work.

After an hour of staring at the computer, Elaine leaned back against her chair and exhaled loudly. She tilted her head back, brushing through her dark chocolate hair and closing her eyes at the mental exhaustion she felt. It probably didn't help that she had completely forgotten breakfast, but her appetite was lacking either way. Pulling back her chair closer to the desk, she folded her arms on top and rested her head. She felt mentally drained trying to please the very picky client, Mrs. Tellez.

A tapping noise disrupted her moment of peace causing Elaine to jump up and see who it was. A man stood outside her glass door wearing a red cap and a red collared shirt. She stood up from her seat and opened the door for him,

"Hello there," she greeted him with a smile as she took notice of the vase filled with beautiful pink roses, tea, and a box of Ferrero Rocher chocolates.

"Ms. Elaine?" the young man asked as he tried to keep everything from slipping off him hands. Elaine nodded, a bit confused as to who the delivery is from. It seemed all too much and too extravagant, but nonetheless, she signed off the board of the delivery man and went on his way. She slowly approached her desk and leaned in to smell the flowers. They are beautiful..
Her index finger traced the box of chocolates and she grabbed the cup of tea and opened up the lid. It was black tea with some milk. Yum! The steam from the cup escaped as she pressed it against her lips and took a sip. As she was drinking, a small card in the flowers caught her attention. She set her tea down onto her desk and plucked the card from the bouquet.

"Dinner?" it read with a phone number below. Her first thought was that it was Steven, but the odds of him knowing her favorite chocolate and flowers were slim to none. So she instantly knew it was Vincent. Unsure of his intentions, she gave him the benefit of the doubt. Elaine folded the card and slipped it inside her purse. She hesitated to call him and she knew she had work to finish anyway.

Elaine looked at the clock and it was already 4:30pm. She was supposed to leave half an hour ago, but work took her time yet again. She left the vase filled with water and gathered her belongings as she got ready to go home. Upon leaving her office, she caught the eye of a few co-workers staring at her, some with envy and others raising their eyebrows at her delivery. She just smiled it off nervously and headed to the elevator. She was yet to respond to Vincent and felt hesitant to even call. It felt rude to just text him.

After hoping off the elevator, she went outside the building and reached inside her purse for her phone and the small card.
When she reached home, she dropped all her things and sat on her living room couch. Placing the card and her phone on her glass coffee table, she stared and hesitated for a few moments.
What if he doesn't answer? Or what if it's all a prank? she covered her face and groaned. Finally getting the courage, she took one phone on one hand and held the card on the other. Dialing the phone, she awaited for someone to picking while she tapped the card on her coffee table.

He looked down at his watch, seeing that is 2pm. "Dammit."

Vincent tapped his pen incessantly on his office desk. Elaine still hadn't called him. He was hoping that she would have called him right away, but she must not want to talk to him after last night. He was tempted to call her work number, but was afraid she would hang up on him.

At that moment, Joey, his friend and coworker tapped lightly on the door to Vince's office and came in. "You coming to my place tonight for poker?"

Still half focused on his thoughts of Elaine, he shook his head at his friend. "I'm busy tonight. I'm going out to dinner with Giana."

Joey laughed at that. "Giana, eh? She's a fine piece of a-"

The look Vincent gave his friend, caused him to pause mid-sentence. If only Joey knew how awful Giana really was. Nevertheless, Vince would say anything to get his friend off of his back about poker night. He hated poker night, all of his friends were idiots, if you could even call them friends. Normally, he just drank his way through them until he was so wasted that everything seemed hilarious.

Putting his hands up in surrender, Joey backed out of Vince's office. "My bad. Anyways, I'll talk to you later Vince."

Several hours later, his work day was over. He didn’t get much finished as he was distracted, but then again he never got much done on a normal day, so it wasn’t a big deal. It wasn’t that Vincent wasn’t smart, he just didn’t apply himself to his work.

Just as he had opened the door to his car, his phone buzzed in his pocket repeatedly. He hurriedly pulled the phone from his pocket, almost dropping it, and looked to see who was calling.

Unknown number.

It must be her. He cleared his throat before answering. β€œHello darling.” He greeted, adding as much charm as he could to those two words.

β€œUm… Mr. Duval. This is the dry-cleaning service you came to last week, your suit is ready to be picked up.”

Embarrassed, Vincent quietly mumbled that he would pick it up and ended the call. Then he entered his car and went to pick up the suit. The whole time he was in there, he avoided contact with the owner and as soon as they gave him his suit, he darted out of the store. When he got back in his car again, he leaned his head on the steering wheel.

Why in the world had he answered the phone like that? Two words, Elaine Porter. It had only been a day since he first saw her again and already, he was making a bumbling fool of himself for her.

His head remained on the steering wheel until his phone began buzzing. He fumbled for his phone again despite the fact that he had embarrassed himself the first time.

Another unknown number. He answered the phone yet again. β€œHello?” He paused for a minute, not hearing an answer. β€œPlease tell me that this is Elaine because if it’s another dry cleaning service then I might have to kill myself.”

Seconds felt like hours. As she awaited for him to pick-up, she headed to the kitchen and turned on the kettle for some tea. A familiar voice answered the phone and it sent a warm sensation down her body. She knew it was Vincent she was calling, but the reality of it didn't hit her until his voice rang through her ears. After he spoke, she gulped,

"That's an odd greeting coming from a business man," a smirk tugged at her lips.

"I called to accepted your dinner offer. I guess we can properly talk and sort things out then..."her voice trailed off as she poured the hot water into her tea cup.

"Just tell me the place and time, I'll be there," she began to dip her tea bag onto the hot water, awaiting for his response.

ImageVincent was relieved when it was Elaine's voice that came through the phone.

"Well, I'm not your ordinary business man." He responded with a smile on his face.

Upon hearing that she had accepted his dinner offer he was ecstatic and shocked. After last night, he assumed she wanted nothing to do with him, but that didn't seem to be the case. This dinner was an opportunity for him to reconnect with her.

"At 6:30, meet me at a restaurant called Daniel, it's on 65th Street if you don't know where it is. Make sure to dress up as well, it's a fancy place."

"6:30 at Daniel on 65th Street it is. I'll see you then," she placed her phone down and pressed the red button with her thumb to hang up the call.

Elaine enjoyed her cup of tea hoping it would calm her nerves. She then placed her cup in the sink and quickly rinsed it before getting ready.
Slipping into her dress, she zipped up the back and began to fix her hair and makeup. The soft, subtle curls on her hair was perfect for this strapless dress and her makeup was nice and subtle. Lipstick was the last thing she applied choosing a shade just a bit darker than her dress.
She sprayed lightly her perfume, it has a subtle floral note to it. Slipping on some black heels, she picked up her phone and called for a taxi.
Within minutes, the taxi arrived and she got inside. Looking outside her car window, the sun was setting between the tall buildings. Elaine's phone began to ring. Her first thought was that it was Vincent calling her, but upon looking at her phone, it was her Mom.
Not wasting another minute, Elaine picked up her phone.

"Mom?" her eyebrows were scrunched in confusion and disbelief.

It was an odd thing for her mother to be calling her, especially since it's 11pm there right now. Listening to her mother's words, Elaine's eyes began to fill with tears. She gasped, covering her mouth as she closed her eyes and a stream of tears fell down. Cheated. That word rang loudly in her ears.

"How could he do that? Dad loves you Mom...." Elaine struggled to reassure her mother, but before she could say anything else, her mother hang up the phone.

Reaching her destination, Elaine wiped the tears from her eyes and breathed in deeply. She paid the cab. He then went to open the door for her. She thanked him once again.

Looking up at the building, the place was fancy, just as Vince had mentioned. Before she entered the restaurant, she tried to call her mother again, but to no luck.

Upon entering through the doors, a nicely carpeted area with a hostess standing welcomes you. A grand chandelier hangs high above the entrance. Elaine was skinny, but her body curved like an hourglass. A few gentlemen could be seen staring her up and down as she walked in. It didn't help that her shoulders and chest were open and exposed while her dress hugged her curved tightly. With her hazel eyes, she looked around for any sign of Vincent.

ImageAfter Vincent hung up the phone, Β he went to his apartment to get changed. Granted, he was just changing from one suit to another, but the suit he put on for dinner was more casual and he didn't wear a tie with it.

Dabbing on some cologne and slicking his hair back, he headed off to the restaurant. Daniel was, as he said, a fancy place. On the inside it had high archways, and a grand chandelier hung above the main entrance. Further in, smaller less elegant chandelier's hung above the circular tables.

The hostess recognizing him as a regular greeted him. "Welcome back Mr. Duvall," she said formally. "Are you eating alone?"

"Not this evening. My date will be here shortly." He pulled out five hundred dollar bill and slid it to the hostess. "This night never happened."

Vince always ate here alone and never brought Giana with him. However, his engagement to her wasn't exactly a secret and he would prefer that no one found out about his date with Elaine.

The hostess smiled and took the money. "Of course sir. Sarah will be your server today, She'll take you to your private table on the second floor." He followed the server up the spiral staircase and walked to the lone table in the corner that gave him a perfect view of the entrance.

"May I start you off with drinks before your date arrives?" She asked politely.

"Yes, a bottle of your finest champagne will do just fine."

She nodded and went to fetch the champagne. Within a minute she brought back a bucket of ice with the bottle sitting in it. Vincent thanked her and she left to attend to the other tables. He didn't open the bottle yet, he was going to wait for Elaine first as she should she be here any minute now.

Looking to towards the entrance, he spotted her. She looked absolutely stunning in her dress, it hugged her curves in all the right places. As he headed down the stairs, it became apparent to him that many of the men in the restaurant were also appreciating her curves.

Vincent didn't like that.

He hurriedly took off after her, but went at an odd angle so he could sneak up on her.

"You look beautiful." He whispered huskily into her ear.

Sliding his hand around her waist to warn off the other males, he guided her towards their table. He pulled out a chair for Elaine and gently scooted her in. Sitting in his own chair directly across from hers, he popped open the champagne and poured in it into his glass.

Vincent tilted the bottle towards Elaine. "Care for some champagne?" he offered.

She raised her right hand towards Giana in hopes for a hand shake.

...

Moments later, the pianist began to play a slow, song. Steven came from behind her and asked,
"Can I have this dance?" Elaine looked up at his blue eyes,
