The soldier nobody will claim...
Toby Tanner, born 21st February 1984 in Churchill, Ontario, Canada. He attended high school in Ajax, in the Greater Toronto Area, during which time he developed a strong interest in history and art, as well as competing in inter-provincial ice-hockey. For a time his plan was to pursue Classical Studies and Philosophy at college - with a very promising hope of a sports scholarship - but his private reading on the subject of early antiquity eventually led him to believe that the chief artisans of history were military leaders.
Following this 'epiphany', he fixated on a career in the army, and went to join the Canadian Land Force straight from high school. He rose to the rank of Captain in 32 Canadian Brigade Group, headquartered at LCol George Taylor Denison II Armoury in Toronto. Despite excelling in training and service, he saw relatively little action other than being involved in relief efforts during the Manitoba floods and the January '98 ice storm. He got his break in 2003 upon his successful appointment as a Special Operations Coxswain in Joint Task Force 2 (JTF 2).
On 23rd March 2006 his unit was involved in supporting the rescue of the Christian Peacemaker Team in Mishahda, Iraq. In December the same year Toby was accused of assaulting and mistreating a subordinate. Federal Court rejected a request to proceed with a court martial because it would have been required that the accused be named. Since JTF 2 operative's identities are protected, it was suggested that an alternative to a court martial be found. Toby's relatively new commanding officer, who was a 'personal friend' of the soldier who had made the allegation, saw a suitable resolution when he was passed down a special request, made from an outside source, for a deniable agent to execute a lone-ranger mission in Africa...
