Gender: Male
City/State/Country: Cardiff, Wales, Great Britain
Appearance:
Skills/Powers:
Poseidon is the God and Great Protector of the sea and those who dwell in it or dare to sail upon it. The second most powerful Olympian behind Zeus, he is also known as the Earth-Shaker, capable of causing earthquakes when he deemed fit with his mighty trident. His powers also reach as far as causing mental disturbances, most notably epilepsy.
Being the ultimate ruler of the seas, Poseidon was often the deciding factor in whether a naval assault, fishing boat, or merely dancing in the waves would end peacefully or in tragedy. When gifted by sacrifices and praise he was known to provide calm waters and wind to fill sails, even going as far as to create new islands to be inhabited by those who worshipped him. When offended, slighted or ignored he was quite capable of vengeance and destruction on a massive level. Going as far a to cause shipwrecks, earthquakes and drownings not mention the many man who'd been lost at sea.
Poseidon also has an affinity for horses being their creator. He is sometimes known as the Horse-Tamer or the Father of Horses.
Personality:
Poseidon was known to be quick to anger and quite vicious, never one to forget a slight he will always make sure retribution is in order for those he feels have slighted him. A lover of great beauty he was known to be placated by kind words, hymns and the sacrifice of his chosen animal, the horse.
Known to be quite greedy and covetous he was not adverse to converting other Olympian's cities to his own. When not given into Poseidon would often smash the cities with his mighty waves as if he were a child knocking down a tower of toy blocks.
Through the ages he'd had many consorts who he tirelessly pursued. Once he saw someone who pleased him he wouldn't stop until they were his or until he lost interest, which Poseidon usually did when he caught whatever prey he happened to be after.
Merrick's present day personality isn't that much different than that of his previous incarnation. Quick to anger and see slights even when there are none, Merrick is usually on the defensive and will not take any perceived insult lying down. He is never furtive or secretive, the Welshman is an open book to all. What you see is what you get and don't ever expect him to apologize for it.
Merrick has a tendency to overindulge be it with wine, women, men or even a bit of gambling here and there. He can be a thrill-seeker and detests being bored almost more than anything. Being an active, athletic man he is an avid swimmer and an excellent horseman and when on his good side you could never find a more true, loyal or helpful ally than he.
History:
Poseidon was born to Kronos and Rhea, an immediate threat to his father's rule he as his siblings before him was swallowed whole by his father. Within the Titan's belly his children, besides the youngest, grew to adulthood. Waiting for what they were never sure until the day came when Zeus released them from the prison that was Kronos.
Vomited forth full grown, the Olympians immediately rallied behind their saviour and brother and defeated the titans, bringing to fruition Kronos' worst fears. It was then that the three brothers, Zeus, hades and Poseidon cast lots to decide who would rule over which realm. the sky, the sea or the underworld. Zeus drew command over the heavens, hades over the world of the dead and Poseidon became ruler and protector of the oceans. Something he was quite pleased to have become, the underworld was too dark and claustrophobic him, the heavens to far and empty. The seas were where he belonged and he took to them like a proverbial fish to a water.
Occasionally the Earth-Shaker would get into quarrels with other Olympians, most notably for trying to convert their cities into his own although he was given a taste of his own medicine when his own niece, Athena, took Athens from him. A slight he has never forgotten and never will.
Poseidon and his nephew Apollo were also quite close, taking double duty in protecting the Oracle of Delphi, Poseidon in charge of making sure pilgrims made their way to the Oracle on safe seas. This was also near the time that Poseidon became enamored of Demeter and to impress her formed the world's first horse. So enamored of his new creation he forgot about his desire for the goddess.
Merrick Caspian was born the fourth son to a fairly modest family of teachers. His father was a professor of history and his mother an elementary teacher and this prepared them for the boundless patience they would have to have when dealing with their youngest child. Rebellious from the start, Merrick was always a handful. More daring than his brothers he was never one to settle in with a book, you could usually find the handsome blond youth near the water, or working in the summer as a ranch hand when he wasn't doing his best to get laid.
Knowing that he was never meant to sit behind a desk, be a teacher or a lawyer or whatever it was that his parents wanted him to be, Merrick left home at sixteen. Having left school unfinished he instead focused on one of his great loves, horses. Taking what money he had saved up and what his parents had given him, he made for the States and was soon hired on as a permanent ranch hand in Texas. Though young and green there was something about the welshman that drew the horses to him, that calmed them when they panicked and soothed them when they were sick.
After ten years of working his way around the country and making quite the name for himself as an expert horse trainer and rehabilitator he was gifted with a scholarship to a small prestigious university. At first the idea was laughable, he was too old and he'd never even gotten a certificate or taken his GCSE exams. How on earth could he be asked to attend such a place? It made no sense to him, but finding himself bored he decided what could it hurt? Merrick could always leave if he didn't like it, or if he seemed too out of place. Either way let it never be said that Merrick Caspian was not one to take advantage of opportunities.
