"Honestly Xixi, I don't think we can just walk up to Magpie and ask her..." Key trailed off. "Especially if she's the one that might have taken the key in the first place." Key crossed her arms, Felix nodding his head. "Just because she liked the show, doesn't mean she won't kill us if we do anything." Felix agreed, his tail swishing thoughtfully. Levi watched them all, awfully quiet. They wanted to go to the Black Market? This late at night? "No offense Xi'an, but you're not exactly black market material and neither is Key." He pointed a thumb in her direction, Key stiffening. "I-I want to help!" Felix pat her head, "Maybe it'd be better if you stayed here so that you don't get hurt." She hissed at him, not wanting him to touch her hair.

Levi turned to her, asking if she trusted him. If she was going to work with him, then she would have to trust him unconditionally. "Fine, but not because I want to." They were heading to the door when someone blocked their path. Felt was standing in front of it with their arms crossed. "Pandora predicted you three would be up to something. I don't think she expected the newbie to get in on the trouble though." Felt shook her head, she was wearing her pajamas. "Time to turn tails and go back to bed you four. There's nothing for you to do," they were just children. Vulnerable children that could get hurt if they tried to go against a crime boss. "The adults will handle things in the morning, alright?" Felt placed a hand on Xi'an and Felix's shoulders, knowing that those two were probably the ring leaders of this little plan.

"Don't make a fuss and I won't tell Pandora and Fox about this." Felt promised, leading them back to their rooms. "We just want to help," Key crossed her arms, following behind them. "I know, but sometimes it's better to rely on the adults." Felt let go of Xi'an and Felix as they reached the bedrooms and pat Key's head. "Goodnight you four." Key went back into her room, sitting down on her bed. She felt restless, but Key had no doubt in her mind that one of the adults was sitting in the hallway, waiting for them to try again. She curled up on her side, hugging one of her plushies. When morning came, Key got dressed quickly, making sure to put shorts on under her dress. She put her hair up in pigtails and waltzed out of her room, Argent in the hallway. "Good morning Key," she said as Key strode past her. "Good morning," Key replied absently, tail swishing in determination.

"Kiki, where are you going?" Fox asked, intercepting her in the hallway. "Out," he grabbed her shoulders and spun her around. "Whoa there, this isn't one of those small cities. This place is pretty big, there's plenty of time for shopping later. Besides, you haven't eaten breakfast." Fox directed her back towards the dining room. "I want to help," Key huffed. "No, I've already told you. You're just a little girl Key, getting involved will only get you and the others hurt. Alright? You four will stay on the ship, let the adults handle this one." Key didn't agree, she thought that there had to be something she could do to help. "You always treat me like a child," she pulled away from him, entering the dining room on her own.

It wasn't the first time, nor would it be the last, that the adults would stop their attempts of being more independent and useful. Even so, Felix didn't seem to like her plan anyways. It irked her, as she tried to rouse herself for the morning. They were stuck here in Athanax for now, the keys were gone, and what would they do? "Really." Xi'an cocked her hip and placed a hand there as she glowered out the window. "Well, not like we'll be useful sitting around like lazy monkeys." And what was wrong with her plan anyways? Who would expect four teenagers to barge right up at the mafia's doorstep? Honestly, it was a plan so bold, so crazy, that it would definitely have to work. How could anyone else not see that?

It was still really early in the morning. An amazing idea popped into her head and the little swan bore a fearless smile. Of course, who needed permission? She had wings, she could fly out on her own and meet Madam Magpie all by herself. No one else was as brave as her. No one else was tough like her. Filled with a new vigor, Xi'an creaked the window open and crawled up by the sill, ready to fly back into the city to hunt down her mark. Suddenly she felt a soft hand on her ankle. Firm, but soft all the same. "I may not be always in good state of mind, but I know how to be a mother." There she was, the broken hearted swan who spent years mourning a broken relationship and a man who cast her aside like she was garbage. "Let go of me. I can solve al of our problems!" She could fly out and make all of this better, why did no one believe in her? But as she tried to wrestle free, her mother managed to pull her back in and latch the window shut yet again, the cool breeze no longer rushing through the gap.

Xi'an was still pouting glumly as she met up with the others for the morning meeting as the adults locked themselves in a room to discuss their plan. Fox was the exception of course, lounging with the children in the dining room of the airship to make sure they did not go out and do something the adults didn't like. The little swan's hands still stung from her mother's slaps. Luckily she wore gloves to hide the red, but it was still embarrassing. The usually hectic morning breakfasts was a lot quieter now with so many having their special secret meeting. "What are you pouting about, beautiful lady?" Felix snickered, shooting an eye at Xi'an as he speared a sausage with his fork. "The fact you're still eyeing me even now, perhaps!" Xi'an shot back, their usual energy still intact as usual.

Levi was there too, but he seemed strange. After kissing her hand and no doubt having a similar greeting with Key, Levi was eating and observing them as they interacted. "Don't worry. We'll show the adults that they can count on us too." Felix said with a cheerful grin, tail wagging. He seemed so sure of himself, it made Xi'an's own hidden wolf tail sway. "Fox is here listening, you know." She rolled her eyes. "He won't let us do anything today either." She casually leaned over and stole a carrot from Key's plate, patting her on the head as she chewed it, as she ran out of carrots herself.

Key sat alone at the breakfast table. She was staring into her porridge, picking at bits of meat. "Morning," Levi sauntered up. He sat across from her, his expression unreadable. Key didn't like that, she enjoyed predictability. This man, this boy... Key couldn't tell what he was thinking and that irked her. "I slept like a baby, this ship is so comfortable." He stretched his arms above his head, Key eyeing him. "What is it?" He asked, leaning forward with a strange expression. Key's tail stiffened. "N-nothing!" She squeaked, looking away. Key scratched her cheek before picking up her spoon and stirring her rice porridge. Felix arrived next, sitting next to Key. "Morning," he nodded, digging straight into his breakfast. "Morning," Key replied, the three of them falling silent.

Xi'an arrived last, as per usual. She sat across from Key, stealing one of her carrots. "Hey!" Key pouted, Levi laughing. "Here," Felix gave Key one of his carrots. "You can have mine," he turned to glance at Xi'an. "What did you do?" He had noticed her palms, which were an unusual red color. Key glanced down, noticing it as well. "I guess we're not going to get a chance today either," as the adults shuffled out, Fox remained to watch them. They didn't want the kids getting up to anything funny. "I can distract him," Key said quietly. "And then you guys can make a run for it," Key would be the best candidate for distraction, since Fox cared about her the most. "No, we can't leave you behind." Felix insisted, indignant.

"I'll just hold everyone back anyway. If you guys can get the key, then you can show the adults that we're not useless." Key insisted, "Xixi, you can fly, so you'll be the fastest." Key turned to Levi, a bit hesitant. "You better keep them safe," Levi saluted. "On my life," Fox rose, coming over to where they were sitting. "What are you four planning?" He asked, tails curiously perked upwards. "Nothing Papa," Key replied. "We were just talking about-uh oh." Key went pale, "Uh oh?" Fox echoed. "I don't feel good," she started making gagging sounds. Fox blanched, grabbing her by the shoulders. "Not in the dining room young lady. You three stay here, I'll be right back. Come on Kiki, the bathroom," he guided her gently as Key continued to make gagging noises, as though she was holding it back.

In the bathroom, Key made fake wretching sounds, spilling porridge into the toilet as Fox stood awkwardly by the door. Key took as long as she thought the others would need to make a break for it, Fox eventually coming over to rub her back. "Feeling better?" Key nodded, feigning tears. "Alright, let's go get you some water. I wonder what upset your stomach," she rose from the bathroom floor. "Maybe breakfast?" Her tail hung between her legs, not giving away her performance. Fox opened the door to the dining room, Key having her fingers crossed behind her back, hoping they had gotten away.

If there was one thing Xi'an was good at, it was sneaking. She was of the crafty sort, blessed with angelic features that led others to believe she was never up to anything rotten. Even now, as they fled through the streets of one of the largest airships in the world while giggling like fiends, no one batted an eye. "She really took the bullet for us," Felix's tail wagged rapdily back and forth. Levi frowned, "I didn't think Key was that type." He pondred, while Xi'an and Felix stared at him. "That's because you don't know our Kiki," Xi'an grinned. "So, what do we do now?" Levi asked as they slowed, the three of them looking around to make certain they didn't run into anyone from the ship. "We just have to find Madame Magpie," Xi'an placed her hands over her heart. "To make sure Key's sacrifice wasn't in vein," Felix nodded, feigning tears. "Fox is definitely going to kill her," the two of them suddenly burst out laughing. "So, which way do we go?" Levi asked, trailing after them.

"I'm not sure," Xi'an admitted. Felix shrugged, "We can always just walk until we encounter one of her ravens?" He suggested, Xi'an leading the pack. "That's an idea," Levi nodded in agreement. "I can-" Felix grabbed Xi'an by the shoulder. "No, absolutely not. You're going to stay here, alright? We can't have you running off again and getting lost." Xi'an pouted, crossing her arms. "Fine," she huffed, her feathers ruffled. "It would be faster if I could just fly there though," Xi'an looked around, narrowing her eyes. "Hey, aren't those Magpie's goons?" Xi'an hooked a thumb in the direction of two men dressed in black, both with an embroided pair of wings on the backs of their jackets. "Yeah, there were a bunch of people sitting in the audience with jackets like those," Levi recalled.

"We'll follow them then," Xi'an strode after them, qucikly ducking behind a pile of trash when they turned around. She was so clever, she thought, Felix and Levi following behind her. They crept down an ally, hot pipes occasionally blowing boiling air, the three of them managing to stay hidden in the steam. Xi'an tugged at the collar of her cape, she had dressed too warmly for this "Who's there!" Someone called out, the three of them freezing in their tracks. "We can hear you!" Xi'an suddenly squeaked, taking a step back. Felix grabbed her arm, preventing her from touching a hot pipe. "Run!" The three of them turned tail, "I knew this was a bad idea!" Felix yelled. "They're in front of us!" Levi pointed out, the three of them surrounded. "Well, well, it looks like it's a group of kids. Should we rough 'em up?" One of them asked, punching his palm.

"Hang on, we just got lost-" Xi'an waved her hands in front of her, trying to make them realize that this was all a misunderstanding. "I don't think so." One of them leaned down, sniffing her hair. "Don't touch those kids!" Someone suddenly fell from the sky, landing right on top of him. "Felt!" Felix yelped, the rabbit raising her fists. "You three, get out of here! Wait, where's Key?" Felt dodged an incoming punch, giving a round house kick. "You heard her, let's go!" Felix picked Xi'an up, throwing her over his shoulder. The two boys ran as she kicked and squealed, punching his back. "Put me down you brute!" Her wings flapped, hitting him in the face. "You're too slow!" Felix spit out a feather. He placed Xi'an back down on her feet now that they were in the clear. "Maybe Pandora was right," Levi suggested softly. "Maybe we should leave this to the adults? If Felt hadn't been there, who knows what would have happened."

"What did I do to deserve a kid like you?" Fox asked with a sigh. Key sat awkwardly on the bench in front of him, looking down at her lap. "I'm sorry," Her tail lay on the bench beside her. They had gotten away, just as she planned. "Stay on the ship, I'm going to find your Mother. When she hears what you've done, she's going to be very disappointed." Key jumped to her feet, stiff as a board. "Please!" She begged, "Don't tell Mom!" She grabbed onto his legs, going limp as he tried to walk away. "Key, stop this. You're just going to make it worse," Key shook her head, her tail dragging against the wooden floor. "Please Papa! I didn't know that they would get out!" She mewled, partly in pain.

"Yes you did," he scolded. Key got up from the floor and dusted herself off. They were gone now, there was nothing Fox could do. "Papa, how do you know I'll stay if you go?" Key asked innocently, batting her eyes at him. Fox grunted, turning around. "Fine, we'll both stay here until everyone else gets back." Key nodded, the two of them sitting on the bench, waiting. It only took a few minutes for Fox to grow bored. "Alright, we'll do chores until they get back. Come on, let's do the washing up." Key groaned, but stood, realizing that this was a mild punishment compared to taking away her things or making her sit out of a performance. Key and Fox collected the bowls that were left on the table, he washed them while she dried and put them away. Next, he made her sweep the floor and then mop.

"You're lucky I'm not making you clean the toilets with a toothbrush," Fox laughed and Key stiffened. He pat her head, her tail immediately swishing back and forth. What were the others doing? She wondered. Had they found Madame Magpie? Had they accosted her and taken back the key? Key could only hope so. "Can I practice?" Key asked, finishing the mopping. It was past noon now, they should have been back already. Key was beginning to get worried. "I suppose some practice can never hurt," Fox agreed. Key went to her room to change, Fox waiting outside the door to make sure that she didn't sneak off somehow. She lay the blue practice matts down on the ground, about to go into a handstand when they heard the hatch open. "That should be them," Fox gestured for her to follow. "Let's go say hello."

"I hope they got the key," Key followed him, tail swishing nervously. It was only two of their family, Argent and Lucias. "Where are the others?" Fox asked, peeking around them, anxious. Lucias shrugged, "We got separated. We figured that we would come back here and regroup, besides, it's getting late. We have to get ready for tonight's performance." Fox nodded, peeking his head out the door, but no one was coming across the bridge. "Alright, let's start setting up. Key, scrap practice. Looks like we're going right into warm ups." She nodded, beginning to run a lap aruond the ring in order to warm her muscles up. After up, she didn't want to get a cramp. It wasn't the first time they had run into trouble on a large airship and it certainly wouldn't be the last.

"Ugh, it hurts." Xi'an panted, bending over. She had run right into one of the steaming pipes, burning her arm. "Hang on," Levi ripped a piece of cloth off of his coat and soaked it in water, wrapping it around Xi'an's arm. "Thanks," she panted, wincing. "Let's get back to the ship," Felix suggested, Xi'an and Levi nodding in agreement. The three of them began the trek back to the ship, the city beginning to wind down as the sun set. It would get cold quickly, the sky ships always became frigid once the sun went down. "Hang on you three!" A man in a black coat approached them, Xi'an froze, craddling her arm. "What do you want?" Felix asked, wary. Levi stepped in front of them. "Can we help you, officer?" Levi asked, "Where are your guardians? You shouldn't be on the streets without them." He asked, crossing his arms, his voice gravely.

"We were just on our way back home," Levi said quickly. "We work for the Cirque, so we were just wandering the city until show time." The man gave them a long, hard, stare. After a tense moment, he nodded. "Alright, off you go then. Make sure you abide by the laws next time, no wandering past sun down without a permit. These are dangerous streets at night," he waved them off. Felix and Xi'an breathed a sigh of relief. "That was amazing Levi," Felix slapped him on the back, the three of them continuing back to the ship. "What do you think would have happened if he didn't let us go?" Xi'an mused, they were nearing the bridge now. "Nothing good, I imagine," Levi replied. Pandora and Fox were waiting for them, the two of them looking cross. Key was standing sheepishly behind them, her tail hanging between her legs.

"You three are in so much trouble. Do you have any idea how worried your Mother was, Xi'an?" Xi'an shook her head, wincing as she held her arm. "What's wrong?" Pandora's motherly instinct kicked in, she swooped Xi'an up, unwrapping the wound gently. "Come on, let's get you to the med bay. You two," she pointed to Felix and Levi, "go get ready. We'll dole out your punishment after the show. Levi, you'll be collecting tickets tonight," Levi nodded, following Felix inside. "Xi'an, are you okay?" Key asked, worriedly reaching out for her. "Go get ready," Pandora nudged her daughter aside. "I'll take care of Xi'an, you need to be preapred for the show." Key looked at her feet, "I'll be okay," Xi'an assured her, patting her head. Key was always so cute, Xi'an thought. She would do anything to protect that smile. Key looked as though she wanted to say something, but instead, turned tail and went to get ready.

"There, how does that feel?" Pandora asked, holding Xi'an's arm up to the light. "Better," Xi'an admitted. It was wrapped in aloe and bandages. She would be able to cover it easily with her dress. "Your Mother is worried about you, you should go to her." Xi'an looked away bitterly. Pandora placed both hands on Xi'an's shoulders, looking her in the eyes. "Your Mother means well, Xi'an. She loves you, even if you don't always think so." Xi'an pulled away, shaking her head. "I should go get ready," she rose, hugging her arm against her chest. She could still feel the sting on her cheek this morning from the slap her Mother had delivered. Did she always mean well? Xi'an wasn't sure. She did know that her Mother was a broken woman and broken people couldn't always align their actions with their thoughts.

Why did Key have this strange feeling as she watched Xi'an walk away with Pandora? Why did she feel as though she was being left behind? "Xixi?" Key's tail fell as her friend was led to the first aid room in order to bandage her arm. "Key, come on, we have a show to prepare for." Felt said, guiding her away from the door. Levi and Felix had already been taken away, the two of them on ticket and clean up duty for their scandal. "What's wrong?" Felt asked as they sat in the dressing room, Argent putting makeup on. "I just feel... left out sometimes." Key replied, even though she had urged them to escape on their own. "Well, that's ridiculous. You know Xi'an and Felix would jump off the ship for you," Felt grinned, tilting Key's chin up. "Besides, staying out of trouble is something to be proud of. You're a good girl Kiki," Felt pat her head. "Now, get ready, or your mother will have our necks." Key nodded, turning back to her mirror.

She put on her leotard and put her hair into pigtails, wondering if Xi'an would be backstage soon. Outside, the crowd had begun to gather, it was time for them to take their places. "Everyone, ten minutes!" Fox yelled, they could hear him through the curtain. Key slipped her shoes on, tying them up around her ankles so that they wouldn't slip. "Let's do this," Felt clapped her on the back. Argent rose, Key would remain backstage until it was her act, the last act. "Break a leg," she looked for Felix, who was sitting on a stack of crates, looking glum. "Ticket duty is the worst," he groaned, perking up immediately when he saw her. "Fox wasn't too angry, was he?"

Key shook her head, "No, but he made me clean the whole dining room," Felix blanched. "That's unfair! We were the ones that busted out." Key giggled, "it's fine. I didn't mind," Levi suddenly walked up behind them, wearing a uniform that was two sizes too big. Key giggled upon seeing him, Levi scratching the back of his head. "Have either of you seen Xi'an?" She asked, looking backstage. "Not since we got back, but I did hear her Mother screaming her brains out." Key went pale, wondering if she should have gone out instead of Xixi. "Hey guys," Xi'an startled them, the three of them jumping. Her grin was mischveious, she yanked Key's tail, Key squeaking, which made Pandora shush them. "What was that for?" Key asked, rubbing her behind. "Payback," Xi'an replied, crossing her arms.

"Kids, get ready!" Pandora called, they needed to take their places. "Hey, I'll be watching from out there." Levi waved, exiting the curtains and going to take a seat. Key crossed her arms. "Do you still not like him?" Felix asked, Key's expression changing, becoming softer. "It's not that I don't like him... I just never asked for a partner." Felix nodded his head. "I can see what you mean. If Fox suddenly said that they had gotten another fire eater, I would probably be mad too." Felix rose, he needed to go get ready. "Break a leg," Key waved. She went to help Pandora fix her corset, tying it in the back for her Mother. "Break a leg," Pandora kissed her on the top of the head, then strode out from the curtains with Fox, their hands connected.

To my Lilypad, I thought I could do it. You were the apple to my pie, the peanut butter to my jelly. Our writing clicked. I wish you had stayed in this world to see our story to the end, but while you've closed your book, I'm still penning my pages. In time, I'd like to publish your story, so the world can see just how brilliant you truly were. I will keep writing, because my heart longs for the click clack of keys as words form in my mind to string sentences along; but I will do it with a painful absence in my side.

To eternity.
