Miles was sitting in the warm shuttle playing with the strap of his duffle bag when the driver pulled onto the gravel driveway of the Ski Lodge. As the car slowly came to a stop Miles wondered if he should tip the driver.
Nah he gets payed enough.
He opened the door slowly and stepped onto the powdery snow that lined the ground lightly. The sky was overcast and the air was crisp. Miles felt himself shivering but walked slowly, making sure not to show that he cared about the cold. He reached into his back pocket and pulled out his iPhone 5.
No reception? Damn. No calls in or out.
As he approached the front door, Miles took a final look at his invitation making sure that he was right about the date and place. After assuring himself that he was, he slowly pulled open the heavy door of the lodge. He assumed that he was standing in the lobby which was cozy and warm. A man and a woman stood in the room.
The man was short but well built. Definitely someone that wouldn't tolerate any funny business so Miles just assumed that he wouldn't talk to him unless completely necessary. The woman, on the other hand, was standing behind the front desk wore a name tag that read "Carla". He looked her up and down, noticing her fake nails, fake hair, and, well, fake face.
"Um hey," he looked around slowly, "I'm Miles. Is this, like, the place?"
Tim waited as the shuttle drove them to the resort, bored out of his mind. This usually wasn't the kind of thing he did, but it was paid for, so he thought, why not? Could be fun? So far not. The drive seemed painfully long, and some guy couldn't stop fidgeting with strap of his bag. That was one among many things Tim couldn't stand. Fidgeting.
Another thing annoying him, as they got closer and lower, he noticed that the reception on his phone was getting worse and worse. By the time they got there, he knew there'd be none. If they didn't have phones that worked at the resort, Tim would freak out.
Tim tried to shut his eyes and sleep, to make time pass faster. However, by the time he was almost claimed by sleep, the car stopped. Fuck my life, he thought, immediately getting out of the shuttle after the fidgetter. It was cold, but Tim didn't mind. The cold was nice. Going inside, there was a girl and guy already there, and the fidgetter introduced himself as Miles and asked if this was "the place". Tim looked at him like he was stupid. Duh, he thought, before looking away from the barbie of a girl to the guy. "Where we staying?" he asked, wanting to get rid of his bag.
Miles dropped his duffel bag on the floor which made a loud thump. Then he grabbed his wallet from his back pocket and pulled his license out quickly. He positioned his ID so it sat between his pointer and middle finger while he rested his elbow on the front desk.
"Um Miles Gap. G-A-P," as if anyone could mess up spelling Gap, "and here's my license."
He held out his hand closer to Carla so she would be able to grab his license with ease.
He turned towards Tim for the first time since they'd arrived and he quickly took in all of his features. Just from that quick glance, Miles could tell that him and Tim would probably not be getting along. They seemed to be complete opposites.
Tim looked dark and intimidating while Miles was chill and, well, the whole package.
Miles looked back at Carla and waited for his room information.
Tim actually snickered when the guy, Miles, spelled his last name for her. Then, looking at the woman, he thought maybe she would need it spelled out. After all, by her appearance, it seemed she couldn't read the tags on her clothes or notice that they didn't fit. Shaking his head, Tim walked over to the desk and took out his drivers license. He held it up for her, but if she wanted a closer look she would certainly have to reach a bit. Or a lot. Tim could tell there was a slightly cold out look on him already, so he chose not to speak.
With any luck I won't have to for now. You know, unless she can't read, he thought, smirking a bit. Though no one but him knew why he was smirking, unless they read minds.
Glancing at Miles, he noticed the "I'm cool you're not expression", making his smirk grow. These were the other people at the resort. It was almost laughable. As long as Miles didn't get in his way or annoy him, he was fine with him, but he could tell he was one of those arrogant guys. Not that he himself wasn't arrogant. He was, and he would state it openly if someone asked. No shame in thinking, no, knowing, you're better than everyone else in the room, right?
While he signed she went over to the drawer that contained the room keys. She selected the appropriate one and returned to her spot at the computer. She took the signed document from Miles, and handed him his room key," Thank you, sir. Your room number is 103. You can go get settled, in an hour you can meet back here in the lobby, and I will be giving a tour of the facility. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to come back to the front desk, and I will be happy to assist you. "
She avoided mentioning the phone situation, hoping that John would have the problem fixed before anyone tried to use them.
With the first guest taken care of, she looked towards the next guest. He still had a look of discontent on his face, this annoyed Carla as she could not understand what could have made him so unhappy in the short while that he had been there. She addressed him extra cheerfully," Hello, sir, and welcome to the Shelter Lodge!"..
Tim watched the girl hand Miles a paper to be signed, and her give him a room key. When she turned to him, he simply shoved the license more directly in her face. "Tim Greni. G-R-E-N-I," he said, smirking at the Miles guy as he spelled out his last name in sort of a mocking fashion. He normally wouldn't spell out his name, but he did this time just because it felt... appropriate.
"Thanks, can you tell me where I'm staying now," Tim said, hoping she got the message that he would not do any socializing till his stuff was unpacked, or at the very least in his room. Then, maybe he'd actually want to talk to some people. He was sure they couldn't be too bad. But if they were, he was sure he could convince them to leave him alone. He was good at convincing.
After she had looked at his license, he pulled it back and put it away not letting her touch it. He didn't want her touching his stuff, even if it was just a plastic card.
"Thanks Carla," he smiled his signature smile, grabbed his bag, and exited the Lobby.
Miles walked down the hallway slowly, looking for the room 103.
"There it is," he said quietly to himself as he approached the second room on the left. He put the small key into the doorknob and entered his room. It was pitch black until he felt around the wall and flicked a switch. A single light in the middle of the ceiling flickered on, revealing an old fashioned theme.
The bed was made with a multi-colored quilt and above the bed was a mantel that displayed huge deer antlers. On the left side of the bed stood a night stand that held a light and an alarm clock. On the right side of the bed was the same display but, instead of an alarm clock, there was a phone.
There was another door on the left wall which Miles assumed was an adjoining room to room 101.
Besides the bathroom on the right side, there wasn't anything else in the room. Only a window which was covered by tan blinds.
So they built a brand new resort just to make it look old fashioned. Genius.
Miles threw his bag onto the floor and belly flopped onto his bed.
At least the bed is comfortable.
And with that he pulled his iPhone out of his pocket and started to play Temple Run.
He took a quick assessment of the people who have entered the lobby so far. First was Miles, seemed nice. That's how you look at all people when you first see them. He never trusted his first impressions of people. Then was Carla, again seems nice but, also a bit slow witted. Last was the guy with the Mohawk, hard to read. Xander didn't let his eyes wander on people for too long. He didn't want to seem like was staring. He wanted to seem he was taking in the surroundings. He needed a cigarette. He hasn't had one since he got on the shuttle.
He was so distracted by his surroundings he didn't realise he was next in line. He stepped up and smiled at the girl, "Name and ID right?" He reached in his pocket and pulled out his State ID and said, "Alexander Coltman, C-o-l-t-m-a-n." He wanted to say his nickname but, it's not important.
She walked up to the counter and smiled at the girl named Carla, she slid her ID to her and looked at the boy that was next to her. She smiled gently and stuck out her hand "Hi, I'm Athylia nice to meet you." She didn't want to come of to creepy but she wanted to make friends on the trip and not be a anti social monster.
She looked at the boys appearance, he seemed sort of like a trouble maker. He seemed not to nig to be in sports but he seemed tough enough to beat someone up. Athylia didn't want to get on his bad side either way so it seemed like a good idea to become friends with him.
The next guest approached her. She appeared to have just woken up from a nap. I sure do hope she takes time to improve her appearance before the tour. A vacation is no excuse for letting yourself look so sloppy!, Carla thought disdainfully. The woman introduced herself as "Athylia Leferber", Carla welcomed her to the lodge, and went through the same routine as before. Taking the signed document from Athylia, Carla went on with the welcoming process, " Thank you, Ms. Leferber, your room number is 111. Please feel free to visit your room and settle down. I will be hosting a tour in an hour's time that will begin here in the lobby. If you have any questions or concerns please come to the front desk, and I will be happy to assist you."
Carla took a deep breathe. Her voice had gotten a bit more raspier, and she was growing bored with the welcoming speech. Maybe I should try to spice things up a bit with the next one, she thought to herself, or else this is going to be a long night.
He did a quick once over on Athylia and tried to assess her. He couldn't tell much, but he felt that she didn't mean him immediate harm. He figured might as well be friendly. It's so much work being a dick. He just couldn't handle it for that few months. He figured out who his real friends were though. He started to think about his friends, and after a short while he concluded that they were all stupid. He snapped back to reality. He hoped that nobody noticed his little adventure in his own brain. They happened often, but they usually didn't last long.
"Sorry about that!" he smiled, "Bit of a backfire. Smell should clear up in a while. This is the final load." He waved at the guests.
"You all have a nice time!" he said, closing the door behind him. The four new arrivals watched him go, their noses still crumpled against their faces.
---------------
The shuttle driver was about halfway down the mountain when another bang rang out from the back of the vehicle. It slowed to a stop. He sighed and got out. "Damn thing..." He muttered, going around to the side to check the engine. He lifted the side panel and looked inside.
"What the-"
That was all he had time to say before a wall of flame erupted from the side.
---------------
Meanwhile, in the lodge, the smell had started to dissipate. Their lungs clear, the four new arrivals started to get their bearings.
She quickly pulled herself together, displaying a big smile, and waving at the new arrivals. "Welcome! Welcome to the Shelter Lodge!", she called out cheerfully to them. "Just make your way over here, to the desk, and I will get you situated."
John heard the loud noise as he was closing the door to the generator room. Sounds like that bus is on its last leg, he thought to himself. He couldn't dwell on that though. The phones refused to work. There was no discernible problem, therefore there was nothing he could do to fix them. Yet, he knew Carla wouldn't let that fly. He sighed, and made his way to the staff room. He had done all he could do for now.
He sat down, sipping at his freshly made coffee. Taking a deep breathe, he looked out the window at the falling snow contemplating how he was going to explain the phone situation to his wife. The snow started to pick up, it took him a bit, but eventually it dawned on him. The blizzard! I'll blame it on the blizzard!
Winny grabbed her bag quickly from under the seat and stepped out of the car. It was snowing quite a bit which caused Winny's teeth to chatter lightly.
As the rest of the people stepped out of the shuttle a black puff of smoke poured out of the exhaust pipe and the car let out a loud bang. As the black smoke filled the air, Ellie grabbed her nose and shuffled to the lodge as quickly as she could without slipping on black ice.
When she entered the lodge all eyes were on her and the others who were also covered in smelly smoke. She felt uncomfortable and just looked at the ground while the shuttle driver explained himself and said good bye.
She was the first to walk up to the front desk to sign in. Behind the front desk was a bleached blonde woman with an annoyed look on her face,
"Um Winny Collins. . ."
✧Miles✧
When Miles heard the loud noise he jumped out of bed quickly and ran to the lobby. He saw a man explaining that a shuttle had just backfired.
After Miles examined all of the new guests he sighed and sat down on one of the couches and listened to some music on his iPhone.
"Thank you," she said quietly after the check in procedure was complete.
She stopped into room 104 to check out her room and drop off her bag. Once she was finished with that, she walked back into the lobby and sat in front of the fireplace.
She was still pretty cold from being in the snow but at least the smell of exhaust was wearing off. Sorta.
When Winny was warm, she got up and sat in a chair that somewhat faced the front desk. She figured she would watch everyone from the second shuttle check in so she wouldn't have to ask them their names.
Nara watched wide eyed as the driver drove away, leaving them. Looking at the building in front of her, she decided it must be the place. Otherwise, she was screwed. Smiling a bit, she walked inside with her small bag. There was a woman behind a desk inside, who seemed overly happy, talking to a girl. Winny. That's what she said her name was. Looking around, Nara smiled more. It looked like a nice place. Nara reached into her pocket to text her friend, but remembered she had left her phone behind. She didn't want to be bothered on a free vacation.
Slowly, she approached the desk and pulled out a notepad from her back back, then a pen from her pocket. She wrote in messy handwriting, Nara Shillia, and held it up to the woman at the desk. Her hair looked bleach and she was wearing a lot of makeup, but she looked kind, Nara decided. After holding up the notepad she pulled out her ID and gave it to the woman, smiling softly.
Tim
Tim found his room and went inside, dropping off his stuff. Looking around the room, he decided it was nicer than he was staying back home. He wasn't sure if that was good, or bad, however. Shrugging, he turned and walked out of the room, not bothering to lock the door behind him. If someone stole stuff from him, he'd kick their ass, so he wasn't too concerned. Though, knowing how people saw him back where he lived, it was likely people wouldn't take him seriously at first.
At that thought, Tim smirked before deciding to go search for other people. His phone still wasn't working, and he wanted to know if there was some problem or if they really just wouldn't work. Or if there was some way to call people. He didn't have much reason to call any friends he had, but if this place turned out to be really cool he might want to tell them at some point.
After finishing with Nara, Carla turned to survey the rest of the guests. Thank god there's only a few left, I am dying of thirst!, she thought to herself as she smiled and waved for the next guest to come up to the desk to be helped.
Lacey was wildly hit out of her thinking state of mind as something almost pushed her over. She had to take a step forward in order to not fall on the ground.
''Watch out! Why are you standing still? You want to sleep outside and get eaten by the Yeti or something? Jesus Christ Lacey, just walk.'' she heard her twin sister say with a sense of irritation in her tone.
''Sorry..'' Lacey said quietly and she walked towards the door and knocked on it.
''Sorry..'' she heard her sister say quietly
''Whatever. Just go.'' Laurie said rolling her eyes.
Finally, movement. The twins walked to the door and knocked. Of course Laurie, being a flirtatious girl, hoped that there would be a cute guy opening the door.
Miles heard a faint knock on the door and looked over at Carla. She just proceeded the check in process with the remaining guests.
I guess she didn't hear it.
He got up and proceeded to the door which he opened slowly. Miles looked at two girls who stood on the door step. He felt himself stand up straighter and he slid his phone into his back pocket.
"Hey ladies," he smiled flirtatiously and leaned against the door he just opened, "come on in."
As they entered he couldn't help but stare at their figures,
"I'm Miles."
✧Winny✧
Winny looked over at the door and saw Miles falling head over heels for two blondes.
What a pig.
Nara took her key and smiled at Carla. Her quicker way of saying "thanks". She then was about to walk off in search of her room when there was knocking at the door. This stopped her, since she had just walked in and not knocked. Was that bad?she thought, but then decided it wasn't a second later. The girl before her had done the exact same thing, and no one even gave either of them a surprised or scolding look.
A boy opened the door, and immediately started flirting with them. Nara kind of just ignored him and looked past at the two girls. Outside were two girls who looked the same. Twins, Nara decided, and after looking closer decided they didn't actually seem all that a like. One of them seemed a bit shy, the other seemed very... upbeat? Nara shifted on her feet awkwardly before giving a small wave.
Xander left for his room while the other guest were arriving. He hated crowds that grew too quickly. This was one of those instants. When he got there he put his key in the door and walked in. He was met by a nice looking room with a queen sized bed. He tossed his stuff on the floor and laid down on the bed, "Ah, It feels good to be on a real matteress instead of my air one." His eyes started to shut on him. A voice in his head told him to wake up, there was people to see and meet. There's a whole room filled decent looking chicks. Have a weekend fling, and never call her again. Xander mulled it over and decided the voice was right. The voice had been there since he was young. It was like his own little pair of an angel and a devil but, had more power over him. He sat up and grabbed his bag. He needed to unpack. He opened it and saw he didn't pack much.
Xander went through the motions of putting stuff away and when he got to the last few items in his bag. He left his carton of smokes on his dresser. It was already opened and missing a few packs. He grabbed a pen from the bedside table and wrote how many packs were left. That way if they get stolen he would know about it. His pocket knife went into his pocket and he tossed his bag with the rest of his stuff under his bed. He pulled out his pack of cigarettes and checked the contents. He had 13 full cigarettes and a half of another one. He put a full one behind ear and proceeded back to the lobby. Now the party had begun the gang was all hear. Xander didn't notice a chair in the lobby. As he walked by his right foot got caught on one of the legs and down he went. The next thing he knew he was on his stomach groaning. He hoped that nobody saw, it was a strech. He looked to the right and saw two human legs attached to the chair. Great, somebody did notice. and it happened right infront of them. Let's hope it's not a cute girl.
Johnny:
Johnny walked in the lobby, he saw all the people that were here. A few cute girls but, nothing else. A punk just tripped and fell next to a tom boy, nothing special. He wanted to pick on the punk but, he moved past that stage of his life. He was now a pencil pusher, not a NFL starter. He walked by ignoring the groaning man. He waited in line for his turn at the front desk. When he got there he knew the routine, "Johnathan Richmond." He grabbed his wallet and flashed his ID. He had gone on business trips before. His company was one of the more successful ones in New York, and he sometimes went across the nation to meet with his clients. He saw in the mirror that his tie wasn't straight. He fixed it with ease. He had been wearing ties ever since he graduated college.
Julia walked in with her head up high, she smiled at some of the girls, but inside her head all she was thinking was 'what a bunch of losers when I'm famous they all will look up to me!' She walked up to the counter next to a tall boy, she looked over him and decided that this boy seemed like a man. Then she looked at the girl behind the counter. "My name is Julia Otto, soon to be famous." She looked back at the boy to see if he even noticed she was there.
Athylia
After a bunch of people walked in, Athylia decided it would be best if she left for a bit. She went up to her room, after she unlocked the door she threw her bag down and started to unpack. She herd some noises coming from down stairs. "Wow sound travels far in this place." She was amazed at the hotel it was nothing like she expected, everything has been so amazing the people seemed really nice too just hopefully she could make a good impression. All of the sudden her stomach dropped. She flipped her bag, she then she just stood there starring at her bag. She forgot her pills...
Athylia has had anger issues since she was young, she has managed to control them fairly well but when she would get angry she would turn violent and hurt others. But the pills would make sure she could stay in control, Athylia sighed. "Well as long as I don't get angry then I shouldn't cause any harm."
She walked out of her room and locked the door behind her, it was time to go back to the lobby. And that is when she saw her... Julia used to be friends with Athylia until graduation. That is when Julia became the stubbern success she is, Athylia hated her, she extremely jealous of her and that was all she needed to hate that girl. Just hopefully she won't recognize Athylia.
Tim decided to follow the sound of the people. He was supposed to go on some tour thing anyways. He had taken his ipod in favor of his phone, since the phone was useless so far in this place. Putting in one earphone, he put it on shuffle and began to walk back to the lobby. On the way there, he saw a girl. She was looking at another one by the counter with a strange expression, which Tim decided to classify as nervousness. Looking in between the two, he shrugged and walked past her to the lobby.
The sight in the lobby however, caused him to smirk. Some guy was on the floor by a short haired girl, two blondes were at the door and the Miles guy was practically drooling over them. There was redhead who wasn't saying anything and was looking around with mild interest. There were a few others as well. So, these are the people I'm stuck here with? he thought, looking around at everyone. It wasn't too bad, actually, he decided.
