Introduction
And the doctors who care for and treat them. Are they all as benevolent as they claim to be?
What of the rooms on the isolated third floor, reserved for the worst cases?

There are two main types of character you can create here - patient or doctor. However, if you really really want to create another type (eg. an outsider, or the janitor) then send me a profile, and I'll consider it :)

"Life has moments hard to describe
Feeling great and feeling alive
Never coming down from this
Moutain we're on
Always knowing we're gonna be fine
Feeling great and feeling alive
Never coming down from this
Mountain we're on"
She repeated the same verse over and over again, then got up and spinned around her white bedroom, her dress swirling around her bare legs. Her mood was great, at least for the time being.
She knocked on the door, seven times in quick succession, and heard the singing cease.

"Luna Byrd. It's a pleasure to meet you." She glanced down at the sheet of paper in her hand. "I've been told you collect you - you have an appointment scheduled with...-with Dr. Moran."

"No, I'll take you. It gives me an excuse to get out of my occupational therapy class."
She strode off down the corridor, calling back to Rachel over her shoulder.
"Come on, dear, we're already late!"

"He's...he's astute." She said finally, then grimaced. "He's not- well, you'll find out when you meet him, but he's not like the rest. He won't make any effort to - what's the phrase - sugar-coat things for you."
They had reached the end of the hallway now, and Luna took her petite tourist left, and down a flight of stairs. They came out in another corridor, this one showing more signs of life than the last.

She glanced across at Rachel, and sighed. They'd nearly reached the end of the corridor, and she brought them to a halt outside a door which was very helpfully marked 'Waiting Room'
"Well, we're here. I would go in with you, but I don't want to. Don't be offended, I just hate it in there. Nice necklace, by the way." Luna grinned at Rachel a little maniacally, then turned and started to walk away. "Oh, by the by - my room number's 132, if you ever feel like visiting. I'm there every day." She laughed quietly at her own joke, then gestured to the door. "It's Dr. Moran's Room - go straight in, you're late. Good luck!" She winked, then disappeared down the corridor.

He returned the smile as a matter of course, and then leaned forwards on his desk, his hands steepled in front of him.
"You're new here. I will explain to you how things work." He glanced down at his papers. "I will be your doctor for the foreseeable future, during which time I will be in charge of everything in regards to your treatment and medication. If you have a problem, you will come to me. You will be scheduled meetings with me at least three times a week, although you can of course make other appointements if you need to. During these meetings, we will discuss things. I can ask you questions, or you can talk to me." He shrugged minutely. "Whichever you prefer. These sessions are, however, obligatory, and I suggest you make good use of them. I am here to help, and at your service, if you will." D.r Moran finished speaking, and inclined his head to her, waiting for a response. His gaze on her was alert, and noticed everything.

Rachel thought about everything that Dr. Moran said carefully, and then returned his gaze, blinking twice. Her blue eyes were the most beautiful thing about her, they almost made her seem normal at times. Bringing a hand to her throat, she played with her silver locket, tracing the designs with her index finger. "I don't think you'll have any trouble with me, Dr. Moran..." she said in a soft voice. "My mood swings have been getting...better, I suppose."
And that was the truth. For the most part, Rachel was happy throughout the day; she skipped down the halls, laughed and smiled, even though it was to herself. The only times she would feel the despair and loneliness was at night, when she was laying on her cold bed, staring at the ceiling of her room. She would think of the times she managed to her hands on Oxicodone, those beautiful, potent little pills that made her world seem so much better, at least for a little while. She would think of the many lighters that she had stored under her bed, of the black "stars" drawn on her wall in red and black marker. I did not do it, she would tell her mom. He made me to do it. He told me to do it.

Dr. Moran regarded her from the other side of his desk, his expression inscrutable.
"Do you suppose that has anything to do with your arrival at St. Malady's?" He said, his voice quiet and unobtrusive. His eyes followed the movement of her hands at her throat, a slight crease between his brows.

"I'm not sure...but I like it. I like being happy, who doesn't?" she asked, and dropped her hands back in her lap, and started picking at her black nail polish. She analyzed Dr. Moran's carefully; the man was handsome. She then blushed at the thought, quickly pushing it in the back of her mind. This was no place to be thinking about handsome doctors. This was a place to get better, or at least that is what her parents have told her. Smoothing down the frumpled ends of her dress, Rachel then brought her hands to her dark hair, which she quickly threw in a ponytail.
"This place has been pretty great, so far. I think I made a friend," she smiled. "Luna."
"Ah. Miss Byrd." He paused for a moment, then smiled in a somewhat painful manner. "She was a patient of mine. She still is, when she feels like it. You'll do well to be friends with her. She knows her way in St. Malady's, and she's a good person. Luna is rather.... renegade, though." He leaned back in his chair and sighed. "I'm pleased that you find St. Malady's to you liking so far." Dr. Moran looked at her sincerely. "Would you like to tell me more about your mood swings?"

"I...they settle over me in an instant. I go from being happy to feeling enraged...I really don't remember much when I snap out of it..but I, um, I remember once when my friend Ashley was swinging, and I was pushing her from behind...she said something that set me off...and it wasn't even something bad. But I remember becoming angry and I pushed her too hard, and she fell on her face and broke her nose."
Rachel remembered the day like it was yesterday. Ashley had gone to the emergency room, and had avoided Rachel at any cost since then. Ashley, I'm sorry, Rachel had yelled, but it was no use. Another person had left her life. Biting her lip, she looked up at Dr. Moran, meeting his eyes again. "I just lose control."

"Is there anything you can do to control these changes of mood? Are there any warning signs, for instance?" His tone was soft and undemanding, and he looked into her eyes with a gentle, open expression.

She thought that opening up to Dr. Moran would be hard, but in fact, it was just the opposite. She never told any other doctor she had about what happened with Ashley. That has always been a very secluded memory that has been resting in the back of her mind for the longest time. "One emotion worse than the anger would be the sorrow. That knocks me off my feet for days...I do not understand it at all," she said, shaking her head. She decided that she didn't like having her hair tied back; she felt very exposed to the world. Taking her hair tie out, she shook her long locks around her shoulders. She then started playing with the hair tie, wrapping it gently around her index finger. God, if only the blush in her cheeks would fade away.
