a character in “Surepath Academy: Year One”, as played by Vanillasugar41

Description

Name: Mavena Selicae

Age: 16

Myth Class: Grecian
Image

I am a... Mermaid

Who likes… Swimming, sweets, seashells with human’s paintings, the feel of fine human fabrics, humidity, water, sparkly objects, solitude/semi-solitude, doing dares, sharing undersea culture with other land-dwellers

And Dislikes… deserts, seafood, pain, very large group activities, pollution (oil, trash, etc), electronics that break with water, nets, being unable to move, clothing, intense heat/cold, cats ("One actually bit me when I tried to pet it! The sailors said it thought I was a fish... dumb cat.")

Fears: Fire (pyrophobia)

I am in my Freshman Year

My class list is as follows:
[Algebra 1] Mavena has heard bad stories about ‘math’ and wants it out of the way first thing of the day.
[Earth/Space Science] Learning about how the world works from a human’s eyes Mavena finds exceptionally fascinating.
[Culinary Arts, Spanning all types of diets] Mavena would love to learn human eating habits and possibly share some of her people’s foods.
[Physical Education] Though rather embarrassed to admit, Mavena is still getting use to the basic human movements.
[Elemental control - water] Getting better with her powers is always a goal.
[Swimming] The Pit - Required!

Where I Recieve my Power: my Tail
Its base enchant is... Water.
Its effect is... manipulation of water to form/act as I command it (but only if I have my tail).

Personality

When Mavena first interacted with humans they learned she was a tomboy by the way she acted in comparission to most females. This was probably induced by her childhood hood of being the spy and army general for her faux-sister, who is the girlier of the two. Mavena is very liberated and will not accept it if she is revoked from something solely because of her gender. Around her friends Mavena was typically very pleasant, making them laugh, being there for them if they were sad and defending them whenever they felt threatened. All in all Mavena is a good friend, though she can be crazy. Her favorite game is similar to "Truth or Dare" and Mavena adores nothing more than a good dare. She doesn't get embarressed easily and is generally pretty upbeat, not taking offense or getting angry very easily. Although Mavena does become aggitated or irritable over some things; like when she is walking, she has trouble because she is still very inexperiance, and this makes her look clumbsy, though she just isn't used to her legs yet. A queer little fact about Mavena is that she sees no problem with walking around undressed. I mean, it wasn't weird where she came from! She doesn't get why humans are bothered by somethings and this confuses her once in awhile. Also, Mavena does not get sex jokes because humans reproduce differently then merfolk, making her appear clueless.

Equipment

This is My Heirloom
It is pure gold with a gem held fast with the flowing gold pieces. Inside the gem is the magic blood of the first magical water being and a few drops of the first water in existence. It has the ability to bring a flood of water to where the one who calls upon it is. To call the power, one must smear of the gem some of the magical, gold blood from a mermaid’s tail.

History

History

Mavena was born to Anistekle, the Sea King's younger sister. Her father was the General of the King's army and was killed in battle with other seafolk before Mavena was born. She and her Mom went to live in her Uncle's palace. About 7 months after Mavena was born, her cousin Princess Mistaisha, was born. They've grown up considering each other sisters. But while Mistaisha is required to have special royalty care and etc., Mavena is free to roam. Often it is Mavena that keeps Mistaisha informed and entertained, although they talk a lot about switching places for a day because they look so similar.

Recently, Mavena and Mistaisha have become fascinated with the giant black shadows that pass over the surface of the water. They want to learn more about them but Mistaisha is forbidden to go near them. So Mavena sneaks out and bring the information back to her. As years passed, more black shadows crossed the ocean and the merfolk learned more about them in secret. The shadows were actually giant, floating hunks of driftwood that carried creatures without tails from place to place. Then as time wore on, merfolk became less afraid and some actually interacted with the creatures. They learned the creatures were called “humans” and the driftwoods were called “ships”.

Finally there came a day when humans asked some merfolk if they would come to the human’s world. Though the King and Queen were hesitant, Mavena volunteered to go and went she came back she would informed them of her findings. They agreed and gave Mavena her heirloom so that she could call on water whenever she needed to. In addition they transformed her so that when Mavena was completely dry she would have “legs” like the humans and of course, when Mavena was fully submerged, her tail will form again. When she is wet, but not underwater, Mavena has the choice between a human or a mermaid’s low body. Thanking her family, Mavena boarded the ship as a human and came to shore.

What she discovered was very, very different from her home world. Tall buildings, new sounds, sights, tastes and hundreds- no, thousands of humans everywhere! It was a strange transition but Mavena tried to handle it with the grace and dignity of a queen, just like Mistashia might. The humans on the ship told Mavena of how humans had only recently come to believe that magical creatures, like her, even existed; and how a school called “Surepath Academy” had been built so to teach some of these various creatures and humans to make peace between their kinds. They told her she would go there for a time, and once that time was up she could travel home or remain on land for however long she pleased. Sending a message home to her family, Mavena accepted and was brought to the school to be registered.

Other:
Mavena is not an average mermaid. To her own kind she is known as a seawitch and to humans she is known as a siren. Regardless of the name, it means the same thing: Mavena is a mermaid who possesses magic beyond a normal mermaid’s reach. But she only has access to her full powers when she is in her mermaid form because her blood (a gold, thick liquid) hold all her magic. As a human, Mavena’s powers are extremely limited; basically only leaving her with her singing voice.

So begins...

Mavena was happier than she had been for a while. After spending so much time on land all she really wanted to do was have a good swim. And not in one of those dinky little ponds that humans called "pools". They were always so small and shallow; even the deepest ones and largest ones. She had gone swimming at a lake too, which was a little better, but the water was so murky and full of garage it was repulsive! Not to mention the chemicals that had mixed with the water... Mavena's scale color was dilluted because of how poor the condition of the water was, and that had made her very unhappy. When she climbed back onto the boat there was even some plastic peice of trash clinging to her tail like a leech! She shuttered, vowing not to swim there until it was fixed again.

But now she was back in the ocean where she felt most at home, even if it was temporary. She had been offered a ferry ride the school know as "Surepath Academy" which resided on an island in the sea, but had declined politely. An opportunity to swim at sea was all she wanted at the moment and she had jumped overboard as soon as they left the docks. It had been a short swim as she had been very eager just to move, but when she arrived she could see the gates were still closed. That was fine with her: Mavena was more than happy to swim until she saw the ferry arrive, which then she would go ashore again and see if the gates were open yet. She dove again under the water to play with some dolphins, who were more than happy to have another playmate.

Mavena popped her head above the water and saw in the distance the ferry. She knew it was the boat, as humans called them, that would be bringing the other students and classmates to the island. Deciding to leave her luggage on the shore (as it wasn't like a seagull was going to take her suitcase) she began to swim out to where the ferry was. As she reatched it, obviously moveing a lot fast then the large, slow boat was, she simply let the pull of the boat carry her along so she wouldn't need to waste any energy. Looking up she saw a few others who were standing near the edge, leaning against the railing or just staring out across the sea. Mavena waved excitedly, trying to get the attention of one of them so that she could possibly make a new friend. If she did happen to get the attention of one, she would probably be able to make the jump to the railing and climb aboard. Fortunatly she had on the little green and blue "sun dress" as the humans called it. They had said it was indecent to be in human form and not have certain parts of the body covered, so she had tried hard to remain properly dressed when she shifted forms. Spotting someone who stood near the edge she waved and called out in a friendly, sociable voice; "Hello up there!" trying to get their attention.

Ethan heard someone calling from below and looked down from his fiddling. He blinked rapidly and his eyes widened. Ethan was fairly certain that was a mermaid holding on to the boat. He sloppily pocketed his watch, leaning over the railing slightly further.

"Hello! Oh, wow, you're a mermaid, right?" He called down, "I'm Ethan, who're you?"

Mavena smiled, glad she had managed to get someone's attention. "Hi Ethan!" she called up, "I'm Mavena! Hold on a moment, I'm going to jump aboard! You may want to back up a little!" Then she dove deep underwater, peering up at the rail of the boat. She would have to clear it if she didn't want to fall off back into the water. That was a risk she happily dared to take! Pumping her tail furiously she sprang from the water with a large splash like an upsidedown cannonball. Surging upwards, Mavena shifted the weight of her body so that she landed with a slightly wet slapping noise on the deck of the ship, a few feet away from were Ethan stood. She could see him better now with brown hair and pretty red-gold-brown eyes. Shaking her self a little bit, she still hadn't shifted from her mermaid tail and was sort up sitting up, looking at Ethan from a puddle of seawater. "Hello Ethan!" she grinned brightly, "I'm Mavena! It's nice to meet you!"

Ethan took two steps to the side when he heard Mavena's warning. His mouth fell open in awe as the mermaid lept over the railing and onto the boat. When she landed, he quickly crouched by her, not even noticing he took out his mother's journal instinctively. Mavens had intriguing hair that was mostly an aqua-green with bits of brown, green, and gold highlighting it. But what really caught his attention was her tail, all shimmering, blue, and scaly. Ethan was seeing more fantastical things in one being than he had thought he might have seen in his lifetime. His giddiness came to a shuddering halt, though, as he realized he was staring and probably being very rude.

He coughed into his fist and looked at Mavena directly in the eye. He opened his mouth, trying to say something, anything, but had no idea where to start. Should he get to know Mavena herself first, or would it be acceptable to just start asking questions about merpeople.

Mavena tucked her hair behind her ear instinctively, a little trait she had picked up during her time on the ship with the sailors. Ethan had squatted down so to be at eye level with her, which she appriciated since looking up at him would have had it to the sun was in her eyes. In awe Ethan's eyes looked up and down her body, focusing on her tail and Mavena smiled. That was the first reaction of a lot of people actually and she didn't mind; after all, it had been her first reaction to humans aswel. What facinated her was a worn looking leatherback jornal he held in his hands and she looked at it curiously. It was made of paper, that much she knew, because when she first touched paper it got all soggy and ripped, which made her feel bad. Careful to keep her hands far from the book she looked up when Ethan made a grunting noise into his closed hand. She looked up right in time for their eyes to lock, and his mouth hung open slightly, making her giggle laugh a little, sounding almost like a dolphin's cry. "Sooo... are you a human?" she asked, cocking her head slightly to the side. He looking like one, but she could look like a human to; that didn't mean she was one.

Selvaggia watched all the people, no monster interact and felt left out. Her tail swished as she hopped down. She spotted a mermaid and the Kelpie grinned widely. Mermaids were like her but prettier, so Selv felt a slight envy. She slid across the railing and landed near the mermaid. She shifted so she was the kelp green horse she was known for and nudged the mermaid's tail, sniffing it. Her heirloom sat at her hip, the tip tapping against her hoof. The rapier was her pride and joy. She ran her tongue over the scales and blanched.

"Yep, merpeople do not taste like fishies at all..."

"Um, yeah," Ethan replied dumbly, shifting in one spot, "I am. So... Is this your first time on land? Well, technically a boat, but all the same." There, that was a likely acceptable question. He mentally patted himself on the back for that. Then he noticed Mavena looking at his hands. Reason why alluded him, (it was obvious merpeople had hands so why be fascinated by a his?) until he looked down. He sighed when he saw the journal in his hand. He hoped this wouldn't become a habit when he met the other students as he tucked the notebook back into his jacket as discreetly as possible. Not only did it seem rude to Ethan, but he wanted to keep it as intact as possible.

"Um... yeah. I am." Ethan said, as if stunned by her question. "So... Is this your first time on land? Well, technically a boat, but all the same." "Nope!" Mavena chimed, "I've been on a boat and land before. Of course, this was all withing this last week but that still counts." She watched the book curiously as he pucked it away, only getting a glimpse of the page. She smiled, recognizing a little bit of the writing on there, talking about mermaids. "So... Is this your first time meeting a mermaid?" she asked in the same way he had only with a small laugh at the end, flicking her tail a little. Mavena was about to say a little more when a kelpi, well know to her people, licked her tail.

"Yep, merpeople do not taste like fishies at all..." Mavena gave and incredibous look then began to laugh. "Well, I guess I'm sorry to disappoint!" she giggled, smiling at the kelpi. A kelpi was also known as a 'water-horse' back were Mavena was from. They were also more tolerant to freshwater than merfolk. They were faster in fresh water too, but in the ocean (in reguards to speed) a mermaid could beat them. It all depended on the type of water and health of the racers. Sometimes she held felt jealous of them because they would walk ashore any time they please as a horse and give the children rides on their backs for pleasure. Of course they would eat them afterwards but no body was perfect. "Hi," Mavena greeted the water-horse, '"I'm Mavena. What is your name?"

"Selvaggia, horse girl and awesome swimmer" she said, her nose flaring to remember the girl's scent. She went to say more but she heard someone else.

" HEY HORSE GIRL, HOW FAST CAN YOU RUN?"

Selvaggia ran over to the boy that yelled at her and began nibbling at his hair. "Pretty fast... Not on land though, I'm more of a water creature..." She murmured through the hair in her mouth before she shifted back and grinned. "Name's Selvaggia but you can call me Selv!" She spit off the ferry's side. "I can show you how fast I am. Wanna go?" she asked, winking and holding out a hand. "It'll be fun and I won't eat you. You're not as tasty as you look..."

"So, is this your first time meeting a mermaid?"Mavena asked, mimicking Ethan's tone. The teen chuckled a little. and here he thought he was going to be eaten on his first day.

He laughed in reply, "I didn't even know they actually existed until Mr. Deneuve let the cat out of the bag."

"Yep, merpeople don't taste like fishes." He heard to the side of him and saw a tongue dart out, tasting Mavena's tail. He glanced up and the blood drained from his face. Of course he recognized the horse-like creature was a Kelpie. His mom had it drilled into his head to never ride a horse, not even the tiny ones at those attractions in zoos because of them. Especially when they had camped out near bodies of fresh water. I guess I spoke too soon about not being eaten. It was unnerving how casual and relaxed Mavena was around the flesh-eating equestrian to Ethan, and he breathed a sigh of relief when another white-haired boy call out to Selvaggia.

Turning back to the mermaid, Ethan hoped to return to their game of 20 Questions, "So, what type of government do merpeople have?"

Mavena blinked. A week ago she would have had no clue what Ethan meant by this question. "You mean, who rules us?" she asked, then smiled, "That would be my uncle, Trodden. He's the king and he's married to my aunt, Jashique, the queen. And then they're daughter is Mistaisha, but I just call her Misty. She's my best friend and my cousin but in public I have to refer to her as Princess." Mavena rolled her eyes, making it appareant that this force behavoir was annoying in her opinion. "Anyways," Mavena's eyes returned to Ethan as did her brilliant white smile. Suddenly she saw that they were getting nearer to the island. She had wanted to be on shore when the ferry arrive and watched as Selva and another boy went ashore. "Hey, do you want to...?" she pointed at the island, asking if he wanted a ride there, "You might get a little wet but we could keep talking."

Ethan muttered to himself absently, "Okay, so a monarchy. That seems pretty obvious now that I think-" Ethan stopped, fully processed the information, and stared incredulously at Mavena. "You'e related to royalty?" He worried his bottom lip between his teeth. Okay, taking in the day so far, Ethan had boarded a ferry to a school where things of myths and humans were going to learn side by side, met a mermaid, and said mermaid is part of merpeople royalty. He could safely write home telling that his first day had been the best day of his life, and it wasn't even nine-o'clock in the morning.

Then Mavena asked if he wanted to swim the rest of the way to the Academy. Ethan almost lept forward, ready to exclaim 'Yes!' at the offer. But then he remembered the journal, and the teen had no clue what water would do to his heirloom. He moved back to his original crouching pose, looking to the side almost guiltily, "I think it's best I stay on dry land for now. Sorry, Mavena, maybe some other time?"

Mavena was a little suprised at the enthusiasm in Ethan's voice as he exclaimed, "You're related to royalty?" Mavena giggled, and nodded her head. She had been told that those humans who were related to royalty were very important, though it was different where she came from. At home she was just greatly respected, but truely she needed no special treatment. That was totally fine with her; she didn't know how her cousin Misty could take all the attention. Mavena frowned, a little pout forming on her plush lip before she got an idea. She assumed that, because of the effect or water on paper, Ethan was worried out his book. "Hey, let me see your jornal for a moment please." She reached out and gently took the book, taking great care not to get it wet before she cupped it in her hands.

Around it formed an air bubble like those diving suits with the helmets and Mavena smiled, handing the book in a bubble back to Ethan with care. She caught sight of his watch and assumed it was electronic, which she knew was not good when wixed with water. "If you want you can put that in there too," Mavena said, pointing to Ethan's watch, "It'll keep them dry. Just stick the bubble with something sharp while it's dry and it'll pop." Taking hold of Ethan's arm, Mavena asked again with excitement on her voice and mild desperating in her shimmering ocean eyes, "Now can we go swimming? Please?" She was actually becoming uncomfortable on the deck as her tail was feeling like it was drying off. Suffice to say; it wasn't the greatest feeling in the world. "Pretty please with coral on top?"

Maria went back to looking out at the ocean, sighing in relief as they approached the shore. first thing she would do is get more clothes, that's for sure... She finished off her Holy-enchanted water and put the bottle in her bag. she touched Dante's Cross for good luck and headed for the landing ramp.

He stood and tossed his bags over his shoulders. he started towards the Docking ramp without a world. as he walked by the mermaid - she had said her name was Mervena - and the human - he said his name was Ethan - He let a few of his flames loose, burning away the flesh on the hand he was gripping his hat to his head with to reveal his skeletal digits. he wanted to see their reactions.

Mavena felt the boat dock and looked around. Sure enough the other students were going ashore. Mavena turned to Ethan, squeezing the bubble so that it popped, delivering his book and his watch to his hands with no problems. "Octopus! It looks like everyone is going inside!" Mavena slithered a little until she was barely balanced on the edge of the boat railing. She looked at Ethan, giving him a bright smile before saying, "Hey, I'll meet up with you inside, right?" Then before he had a chance to respond she leaned backwards, falling overboard again. Twisting correctly she dove into the clear blue sea with a whoop of happiness. Quickly she swam to the shore where her luggage was, just as she had left it. Getting out of the water she shifted from her tail to her legs and promptly fell onto her face. Standing again she had to remind herself for the billionth time she still wasn't good enough with her legs to shift while standing. Oh well; she would work on it later. Standing for the second time Mavena dusted herself off, picked up her things and walked/stumbled in the direction that the others were going.

"Okay..." Ethan called back weakly. When Mavena leaped into the water, Ethan tried to pop the bubble around his journal without showing the frantic urgency that screamed withing him. He had twitched when the mermaid had taken the book from his jacket, and was relieved to be tucking it back into the comforting space between the jacket and his side. Ethan looked over on land at Mavena and his eyebrows rose in examination. He half mumbled to himself, "So merpeople can transform their tail into legs."

He hurried down the ramp to grab his own modest suitcase and duffel bag before heading over to Mavena. From the few times Ethan was forced into public school, he knew that people stuck to others to minamize likelihood of being bullied or picked on. Or in this school, eaten. But then again, Ethan wasn't positive, seeing as he just barely attended school the number of required days to graduate into the next grade.

Mavena saw Ethan approaching her she tried to strighten up. These bags were throwing off her balance and she was about to fall over. In fact, when he came closer, her sense of balance on land failed her tremendously and she fall foreward, doing a saumersalt and landing on her back, groaning. "Oh coral! I'm never going to learn how to use these legs!" she groaned, sitting up and rubbing her head which she had managed to hit during the catastrophic tumble. She looked up and Ethan who was standing perfectly fine despite his out baggage. "How on earth do you manage your legs so well?" she asked, incrediblous as she gathered her stuff and stood up again, determind to walk into Surepath.

Mavena looked up from gathering her stuff to find another boy standing there as well, carrying some of her bags. He didn't look like he was trying to be mean and take her things so Mavena assumed he was just trying to help her out. He had probably even seen her particularly embarresing fall... Mavena pushed that thought from her head and smiled at the newcomer. "Hello!" she greeted happily, a cheerful and friendly tone in her particularly melodic voice, "Thank you very much for your help. My name is Mavena, and that's my friend Ethan," she said, gesturing to the brown haired boy she had met on the boat, "What is your name?"
