Growing up, there were stories that my dad used to tell me about a man and woman who were trying to save the world. I always loved to sit and listen to him talk. I still do, to this day. Every night it was something different, some new grand adventure. The pair fell in love, defeated the ultimate enemy, and the last story he told me was how, in the end, they ended up creating something more precious than any cause they'd ever fought for.

Me.

Now, I didn't really take this seriously, not at first. Then I started noticing that strange things were beginning to happen around me. The power would suddenly short out when I tried to flip on a light switch, and when I got really angry, or really upset, or even happy, the air around me would feel charged, and my hair (frizzy enough as it is) would get fluffy and staticky. Soon, I realized I could move metal objects without having to touch them, and that was when things really started to sink in.

Perhaps my parents' stories weren't as made up as I'd originally thought.

Mom finally sat down with me, shared a little bit of what her life had been like before she met my dad. She told me that the abilities I had were because they were abilities that had been built into her, that they were dangerous, but a gift, and ones that needed to be used wisely.

I've set out to learn more about my parents' past. It's my legacy, and even though I have no idea where it's going to take me...

...I'm excited to go.

So begins...

She rolled her eyes, shaking her head and reaching to grasp his hand. "How long do you think they'll have us stay?" she asked, leaning her shoulder into his chest.

"Not that I mind being a part of living history, but this is a little bit stressful.

You know that feeling that you get when you're so hyper you don't really think you can accomplish anything worthy of note? Your mind is running in a million different directions, and you can't focus long enough to follow a single train of thought. This, in turn, causes a very unique sort of mental exhaustion.

It didn't make for a pretty combination.

But that was how Amariah felt as she entered the bar, assaulted by noise and the cacophony of multiple interactions going on at the same time. She looked rather unassuming, save for the cascade of red curls that fell around her shoulders. She looked normal, unassuming, even...

...even innocent as a lightbulb she stood near suddenly burst with a loud pop. She jumped, glancing towards it, skittering sideways to avoid the pieces of broken glass.

"Oops..." she murmured under her breath.

"I really don't understand why people can't talk at a significantly lower vol--GAH!"

It was almost funny, the way she managed to maneuver around the hulking frame of the detective as he stepped back into her. With a grace that seemed far too perfect to be natural, she practically spun beneath him, watching with wide eyes as the man aimed for the floor, her arms at her sides, and a wan expression on her face.

It almost looked like her hair was starting to stand on end. Small tendrils floated above her head, as if charged with some kind of electrical energy.

"I, er..." Pursing her lips, she turned away rather abruptly, running a hand over her face and walking towards Anodyne and her groupies.

She didn't pause to stop and chat, though. Rather, she put herself at a place where she wasn't sitting too close to anyone.

A stray fork seemed to be sneaking its way across the counter, closer to her. She glanced at it sideways, her brow furrowing, before turning to stare at the counter.

That fork kept creeping.

Amariah looked ready to respond, but she was interrupted by a fork slapping against the flat of her forehead. Staggering back, and crying out in surprise (and pain), she reached to grip the utensil, all but prying it off of her face and nearly throwing it back behind the bar.

Breathing hard, she looked toward Chemo with wild green eyes, her lips pursed tight.

"Thanks." she muttered. "The fork's doing enough hitting anyway."

"It isn't my sparkling personality?"

The look of confusion on her face was convincing enough. It was her own way to be self-deprecating while in the throws of one of her many bouts of 'I don't know how the hell I'm supposed to control myself'.

"I'm honestly not sure why I even bother coming here anymore." she told Chemo, rubbing her forehead where a small red mark had begun to appear. "I just...this happens so frequently, but I'm stuck on this hope that I might be able to talk to someone without having things fly at me."

Or without accidentally electrocuting the hell out of someone when she shook their hand. As a result, she most definitely kept her hands to herself.

"Help is something that has been short in supply," Amariah acknowledged, looking just a little bit relieved at the thought of someone helping her gain some sort of control.

She was ready to respond, but that strange sensation, the feeling of someone or something staring at the back of her head, startled her badly enough that five or six of the lightbulbs along one side of the bar suddenly shattered, leaving part of the bar encased in shadow.

"Oh, no.." the girl had turned to observe the damage, and whenever she touched something with her hands, bits of bright white static skittered off of her fingertips.

"Fine, I'm fine. I'm..."

Whatever she was about to say was suddenly cut off, and the girl shrieked, stumbling back as a thing leaped at her, clinging to her face like a starfish.

The air in the bar felt charged with electricity, strong enough to cause the hair on everyone's arms to stand on end.

And the creature, if it was susceptible to such things, would feel a powerful charge ripple through it, like it had been shot with a tazer gun.

"GET OFF ME!" The girl cried out in panic.

The quiet street was interrupted by a brief, but blinding flash of white-hot light. It flickered from an alley, where a girl abruptly stumbled from, staggering in the darkness and gripping the sides of her head, as if she feared her skull would split in half.

She grit her teeth, tendrils of electricity dancing between her fingers as she fell to her knees, a sharp cry piercing the night as an electrical surge powerful enough to raise the hair on a passerby's arms threatened to ripple from her figure. Metal objects were repelled, park benches ripped from the cement to get sent skittering down the street with a noisy screech.

"Make it stop," she whispered, gritting her teeth and bowing her head.

She rocketed to her feet the instant she saw the man fall, her ears ringing painfully as she backed away in clumsy, awkward steps. "Get out of here." she said hoarsely, her hair nearly standing on end from the charge that rippled along her skin. She grit her teeth, a low growl rumbling from her throat as she struggled to flatten her hair to her head.

"You're going to get hurt. Leave." she insisted sharply. Her startled gaze flickered to a light pole as it began to bend dangerously, angling sharply for her and John.

"You don't even know what's wrong with me." she replied breathlessly. "I can't make this stop, the ringing in my ears. It hurts so bad, and everything around me just keeps moving."

Like a grass blade caught in the wind, the light pole whipped back, snapping and shattering against the ground with a loud pop. Down the line, six more light poles snapped and smashed to the concrete. Amariah, dizzy now, and clearly exhausted, went to one knee.

"I can't control it," She told him meekly.

Her eyes locked onto his, a startling, electric blue in contrast to the calm silver of his own gaze. She focussed on that color, let her vision fill with it, the melodic trance of his voice pulling her away from the panic that had gripped her.

Finally, things seemed to still, and the universe as a whole breathed a unified sigh of relief.

She lowered her hands.

"Your bike," she noted, her brow furrowing as she finally broke contact and looked towards his ride. "God I didn't mean...did I break it?"

She unsteadily rose to her feet.

"I just got scared. Something startled me." she said to him, obviously uncomfortable with the idea of having to have some kind of escort. She glanced up at his face, into his eyes, her brow knitting with concern as she crossed her arms over her chest.

"I mean, it doesn't always happen like this. It's gotten worse in the last few months. Sometimes I get so anxious that I feel like I'm going to explode, like I have all this energy inside me that's pushing to escape." She flushed, her freckled cheeks stained light pink.

"...but I'm alright. I don't think I'm hurt, just a faint headache."

"I don't mind them." she told him, glancing away from John towards the bike she very well could have turned to metal splinters.

"Tell me more about this woman?" she asked him as she started to walk towards his bike. She hadn't quite said that she needed a ride anywhere, but it was pretty clear she was okay with him taking her.

She didn't seem to mind either. Her eyes were wide as she took the helmet from John's hands, and slipped it on over her head. Peering out from beneath the vizor, she stuck out her hand with a smile.

"Amariah Conner." she introduced in reply. "It's a pleasure."

She rattled off an address, giving a brief synopsis of how he'd best get there, and in the shortest amount of time. Swinging up onto the back of the bike, she tentatively wrapped her arms around his waist before scooting close, fearful that she might slip off of the back when he started off.

"Y'know, most people would steer clear of someone like me." she said to him. "Why'd you think to help me?"

Amariah was having a good day.

She hadn't tripped over anything, or caused anything to explode, or caused eating utensils to go sailing across the room. What was better, was that someone, a rather attractive someone had found her having a fit the other night and treated her kindly. Izumi, he'd said. Johnny Izumi.

Feeling color in her cheeks, the girl slipped into the bar, looking around with wide eyes before making her way over to the counter. Experience taught her that this place was no good for her health, but she continued to come back anyway, if only for a source of entertainment.

Or, maybe, a chance to see someone again.

Amariah glanced away from the bar, spying Anodyne with her gaming console. Shying away from the rest of the patrons, she meandered her way over to the other woman's booth. She pulled out her cell phone.

"What are you playing?" she asked curiously, bringing up her 'Bejeweled' application.

Amariah smiled to Nina, shrugging a little before turning her phone around and showing her the dazzling, sparkly colors of the Bejeweled game. "Never was very good at the shoot-em-up games, but I kick ass at Dance Dance Revolution!" she said. She glanced towards the others who had come with her.

"So, you don't talk much? Is it because you can't or you don't have too much to say?"

The fork that Nina had suddenly throwing at Daria froze midair, floating back towards Amariah and setting itself down on the table between them. Amariah's brow furrowed.

"I know some people who would wish I had that preference." she said with a small smile. The glow of light drew her attention briefly, and she looked sideways at Daria.

Her eyes widened. "That woman is on fire."

She looked down at the fork, biting on her lower lip before it suddenly levitated, then rocketed in Daria's direction. The girl gasped before surging to her feet.

"Wait I didn't mean to do that!"

"Oh!" Amariah thought about that for a second. She pulled up a different game on her phone, before putting it down between her and Anodyne.

Words with Friends.

"Do these guys follow you around all the time?" she asked her, glancing to the other woman's face before plugging in an answer and hitting 'send'. With a coy smile, she nudged the phone closer to Anodyne.
